The Last of Us Part II Initial Story Was Not “Special” Enough: Naughty Dog

With The Last of Us Part II being the biggest reveal at PlayStation Experience 2016 (PSX), it’s but obvious there’s more to it than just a great looking trailer.

I was banking on a sequel starring completely different characters affected by the ending. That being said, its going to be interesting to see the story direction of Last Of Us 2 especially how Ellie's will view Joel after learning "you know what".

OB1Biker2755d ago (Edited 2755d ago )

I think the 'lie' at the end is a bit blown out of proportion by fans. She should react the same way as a daughter would react to any protective father who would, of course, have done the exact same thing and lie as Joel
They are about as close as family together as it can get in that world.

@Sunny
'...for his own selfish desire..'
Sorry I don't get how many see it that way. Nothing selfish in being protective, on the contrary.
I may be wrong but I think what s important at the ending is not the lie, it's Elie not questioning it further than ' I swear'
'saving of mankind' (more like saving themselves IMO) is the fireflies crazy fanatism drive. 'mankind' waited for 20 year and then when they get hold of her, mankind couldn't wait a few more hours to at least tell her and ask 'if it's ok'? Selfish Joel for not getting along?
Remember how he was trying to revive her half drown? Then those fireflies come and knock him down. Who's selfish?

Kyosuke_Sanada2755d ago

[Mild Spoilers]

Maybe but Ellie already accepted the costs and it was solely Joel who believed that the end didn't justify the means. I'm pretty sure she didn't written off as an "oh well" moment especially because of the lives his decision took within the Firefly main base. and the vast amount it will take outside it's walls.

Sunny_D2755d ago

The lie is still a huge factor though. Joel could have single handily prevented the saving of mankind for his own selfish desire. That could have consequences and maybe it wasn't' his choice to make.

monkeyDzoro2755d ago

I never really understood why people where mad at Joel. If you have picked up the audio archives in the hospital and listened to it, you'd realized that finding a cure (by killing Ellie in the process) was NEVER a guarantee. In fact, Ellie was not the only immune. There had been other immune people on which they performed experiments which all failed. So it wasn't 100% sure that with Ellie, it would have worked.
That's why, knowing that, I wasn't "mad" that Joel did what he did.

Summons752755d ago

By the trailer she looks pretty ready to kill the fireflies for what they tried to do to her after lying to her. It was clear with the original's ending she knew Joel was lying and trusted him.

joab7772755d ago

Not sure the lie will matter too much. I think she go on a hateful revenge mission and then something will happen to Joel and the 3rd story will be her redemption. It would be cool if you could play as either character at any time, splitting up often though.

Captain_Tom2755d ago

Yeah me too.

I thought for sure they would focus on something else, or heck maybe even make an anthology series of mini campaigns for different characters in the story (Still hope they do that).

But if it took them like 2-3 years just to agree on the story, I am content that it will be good lol.

freedom that was allowed to ND by sony

no other big publisher would ever look to not make more uncharted games , just look at how many AC games we got from UBI in a decade or a new halo and gears trilogy

there is a reason kojima is with sony now too and so many others like david jaffe have said working for sony is a privilege

keep on doing what you do ND no doubt uncharted 4 deserved GOTY but a MP only shooter which is already showing signs of decreased numbers of active players got it

OB1Biker2755d ago

Yea exactly. In many year Uncharted 4 will still be a classic but who will remember the actual GOTY?

philm872755d ago

wish they took this approach on Deus Ex

Looking very much forward to what ND came up with for part two. Still hope we get a DLC or another game showing the time from right after Joel lost his daughter close to where he meets Ellie, somewhere down the road.

CorndogBurglar2755d ago (Edited 2755d ago )

That could be cool, I suppose.

But according to Joel himself he had done some pretty horrible things in that 20 year span between losing his daughter and meeting Ellie. He was basically a criminal all the way up to when we take control of him in the game. He was into some shady dealings as far as smuggling illegal goods and drugs, murder, and ambushing potentially innocent people for their belongings.

I'm not so sure that playing that time frame is necessary. Could be cool, I don't disagree. I just don't see how that would add much of importance and the DLC would have to end with him still being in that situation.

I never thought about having hordes of clickers but after Days Gone, I think Naughty Dog could nail something more incredible. Glad its close.

Jimboms1603d ago

I can't wait to see how they've changed up the infected, I'm going to die so much from standing there in awe

VerminSC1603d ago

I actually remember Niel saying something along the lines of “with the PS4 hardware we can now support a horde” I wish I could remember where he said it but that would be insane.

REDGUM1603d ago (Edited 1603d ago )

I have to say that no matter what the game is about, how it plays, what missions will entail, Naughty Dog have well and truly proved to us gamers that they can make it happen and do it well.
The whole picture thing could be just that, a picture. Having said that, the writer may well be on to something too, we just don't know and that's exactly what i'm looking for in a game too.

Developers push boundries, they are supposed to, no point in releasing a identical story and puting a 2 on the end of it.

My opinion, it'll be similar to the 1st game but changed up well too. I can't see a horde mode here as the ammo count, bow and arrow, knifing that we saw in the gameplay so far looks low, i.e. with sparing ammo etc the game seems more of a one on one, each encounter different than the last kinda play which I'm keen on and what I loved most about the 1st game.

I've only just started the Days Gone game and am yet to encounter a horde mode so am definitely not saying it wouldn't be great to play in the new last of us game it's more of an opinion from what I've seen in the TLOU 2 trailers so far.

They're going to wow the audience with gameplay for Death Stranding, Last of Us 2, and Ghost of Tsushima with release dates for all 3. Then they're going to hype up gamers with more Spider-man footage. Then they're going to drop a bomb with Demon's Souls Remake by Bluepoint. Then another bomb with From making Bloodborne 2.

Rimeskeem2208d ago

I assume maybe like an open beta for Dreams with a release date as well. 2019 will be Sonys to lose.

Einhander19712208d ago

Hopefully some surprises, with PSVR content as well.
