PlayStation 4 Pro review: A futureproof game console waiting for more compelling games - CNET

CNET: The PlayStation 4 Pro promises enhanced 4K visuals for certain games. But at launch, it's a tough sell.

freshslicepizza3141d ago

sony is really hampering the jump by throttling the system back unless games get updated and we all know how developers can be lazy with trying to push any hardware to its limits unless they are exclusive games.

ninsigma3139d ago (Edited 3139d ago )

You really are on over time these days aren't you??

Edit:
And funny you talk about exclusive games when xbox will no longer have any...

darthv723139d ago

regardless of how you feel about moldy... there is some merit to a better system being held back to the least common denominator. Honestly the real way for Pro to demonstrate all that power is for it to get something that cant be done on the lesser model.

Sony cannot be afraid to let the developers have some creative freedom with the Pro simply because of fear of splitting a fan base that could potentially move to Pro anyways. If they really showed off a game that could not be done on the regular model, there are two possible scenarios. Those who dont have a Pro will go "DAMN... this makes me want to go Pro even more" and the other would be from those who have a PS4 and they will say "Damn we dont want to miss out on that" and they will upgrade (as many [on here anyways] are already doing).

The Pro is like a really nice sports car that you drive very slowly so you dont risk getting any speeding tickets or offending others who cant drive fast. Sony needs to show off what the power under the hood is capable of, but they wont as long as there is at least one person who feels like they will be left behind.

freshslicepizza3139d ago

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

This showcases the Pro in action. There is no doubt the system is powerful and offers great value for what it can do.

Outside_ofthe_Box3139d ago

Darth, there's a third scenario where those who do have a PS4 get pissed off because Sony went back on their word about the Pro not having exclusive games.

Pro doesn't have to demonstrate "all that power" because is not a freaking next gen console. The Pro getting exclusive games will make it an entirely new platform as opposed to a different iteration of an existing one.

darthv723139d ago

"there's a third scenario where those who do have a PS4 get pissed off because Sony went back on their word about the Pro not having exclusive games."

Technically those who get pissed at this would get over it so long as Sony demonstrates the benefits of going Pro. They have a bit more respect for their fans than if they were to just say "screw you, we are moving forward with or without you." So you can rest assured that they will have it figured out when the time is right....but it is going to happen.

andrewsquall3139d ago

@darthv72 Then get ready for the almighty BEASTLY Scorpio that will be sharing its games with a console that ISN'T a "futureproof" GDDR5 console.
Lets focus on what moldy said then. Scorpio will be hampered EVEN on exclusive games because of the ddr3, awkward eSRAM bottleneck, Xbone.

I think Sony said that games from 2017 and onward are mandated to be optimized for the pro. Sony cant just make games use the full power if they were not developed with the hardware in mind. That's like playing command & conquer Red alert 2 and expect it to run in native 4k with High res textures because my computer has a 1080

freshslicepizza3139d ago

Games are mandated to work on the Pro but Sony cannot force developers to push the system. That is not Sony's fault and I would never blame them for that. The only thing I can blame them is the lack of allowing the system to run games without locking the system and being throttled back. Sony says they did this to eliminate the possibility of games being unstable but again Sony is not allowing the consumer to decide. Sony boosted the clock speed on the PSP and the PS2 also ran PS One games better with the advanced hardware. I'm not sure what the problem is with allowing the PS4 run older titles at the higher clock rate.

You expect newer GPU in the computer to automatically run older games better and the Xbox One S and it's small boost over the Xbox One shows they too can run a stable console.

Sony first party games will showcase the Pro, that's awesome, but what about the other 1,200 games? That to me brings the overall value down until more games use the better hardware.

DigitalRaptor3137d ago (Edited 3137d ago )

@ moldybread

"That to me brings the overall value down until more games use the better hardware."

Read back your comment, and just listen to yourself.

Nonsense. No sense. Not an ounce of it.

You are yet again acting like Sony is removing a consumer choice, when in fact it didn't exist in the first place, nor was it ever implied to be the case, nor were you ever entitled to it. A real consumer choice would be for a person to say "screw PS4 Pro, I'll build a PC and do what I like to my games on my open platform". The best part of your comment is taking the podium to act like you know better than Mark Cerny about the risks of overclocking on this particular machine, cause I'm absolutely positive you were there engineering the thing with him.

Even better...? the PS4 Pro has the same value proposition as the original PS4 did. It has roughly the same number of specifically supported games on launch day as PS4 did. You're basically feigning concern about a $100 differentiator for about the same level of support that PS4 had day one and counting. LMAO.

Please, could your concern be any more artificial?

S2Killinit3139d ago

Oh Moldy
You are so reliable you should make cars. We can always count on you to be there with a negative twist on anything Playstation.

OP: cant argue with the sheer number of games on PS4, and I was to play my most anticipated games, in the best way possible. Thus the Pro

freshslicepizza3139d ago

Lots of PS4 games yet how many of the 1,200 plus games available show a significant upgrade over the regular PS4? 30? 40? Sure they number will grow over time but that isn't very many for new owners wanting to get a better experience.

S2Killinit3139d ago (Edited 3139d ago )

Somehow I dont think you will have that issue when scorpio arrives.

If that was the criteria then no one should ever buy a new console "because while the list of games will grow but 30,40,50 games isnt a very many for new owners". Yea?

In the meantime Im enjoying the heck out of the Pro and PSVR.

DigitalRaptor3139d ago (Edited 3139d ago )

Hilarious.

"Throttling". Can you taste the concern from this guy?

He'll keep at it until he realises that the Pro has at the very least, the same (if not greater) value proposition as the original PS4 did, and still gets better looking AND performing games in many instances. Didn't Assassin's Creed: Syndicate just get a stealth update? The updates keep coming.

@ ninsigma

Now, that is exactly right.

Woah cool! We can now cancel upvotes/downvotes on comments now!

darthv723139d ago

cool... that's new and no mention of it on the main page or anywhere else. Just tried it and it worked. Thanks for the tip.

mattdillahunty3139d ago

I just got my PS4 Pro (first console i've bought since the Wii), and I paired it with my new 65" Samsung ks9000. Uncharted 4 looks absolutely amazing, especially with HDR. My only problem is the Pro-capable games list is kinda short right now, but since I'm primarily a PC gamer anyways, I can take my time with Uncharted and wait for more games I want to play that take advantage of the hardware.

bow2yoda3139d ago

I wonder how much CNET got paid for this review smh.... they said something very similar about the PS3 and its supposed 10 year life span lol

Pancit_Canton3139d ago

PS3 just celebrated its 10th year anniversary and it's still selling.

S2Killinit3139d ago

Hahaha that answer was crushing.

bow2yoda3139d ago

not really... if it had a 10 year life span, eg ps2, then they would have never moved to the ps4.... PS3 was sonys worst console hands down. Both in performance (dictated by that generation) and sales.

bow2yoda3139d ago

right that is why they have released not one console but two... and the ps3 was A HUGE FLOP!!!! Kinda like the XBOne

kraenk123139d ago

The PS3 sold more than the 360 in one year less...just saying.

bow2yoda3139d ago

the ps3 NEVER outsold the 360 lmao.. not one time lol.... facts are facts

UCForce3139d ago (Edited 3139d ago )

Same goes with your attitude.

Edit : @bow2yoda You are acting yourself like superior than everyone. That's very arrogant and disrespectful. That's low right there. I mostly play game on my PS console but I respect people who play their own platform, I'm not bashing people opinion like you. You don't deserve that kind of honor like I have one. The Reason Xbox 360 outsell PS3 because the price was cheaper and PS3 price was higher but With PS exclusive that help PS3 sales to boost even further and PS3 barely outsell Xbox 360 just in time. And you ignored that. Like I said, you don't deserve that kind of honor like I have.

bow2yoda3139d ago

UCForce. i have no allegence. i have a pc that i do the majority of my gaming on. waiting patiently on a switch too. the xbone, ps4 and wiiu are all jokes as is the majority of software released for them. all rehashes....

ShowanW3139d ago

i got a ps4pro and the title of this article is spot on...

i don't have rise of the tomb raider (which i hear is very nice on the 4pro)

Kurisu3139d ago (Edited 3139d ago )

I'll get a PS4 Pro when one of the following games release:

God of War
Detroit
Final Fantasy VII Remake.

I may be waiting for quite some time, but I'm fine with that!

kraenk123139d ago

Final Fantasy XV?! Horizon?!

ShowanW3139d ago

I own a PS4Pro and, As of this moment right now...
The title of this post fits the PS4Pro perfectly.

I have Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One, but i hear its the best Pro Enhanced game out at this moment.

They say Horizon:ZD is looking to be amazing on the 4Pro, which can only be a good thing.

inFamous:SS cleans up okay, but it enhances the black levels too much. Blacks levels are amazing but it comes at the expense of the lighting. When fighting the Conduit at the beginning inside the building where Betty is, visibility just sucks.

SamTheGamer3139d ago (Edited 3139d ago )

This is playstation. We proud of this.

Sony Looking To Sell A Lot Of PS4 Pro's Come Christmas Says Jim Ryan

According to Pachter, the PS4 Pro sales aren't doing very good. Maybe drop the price $50 and bundle in a game since Xbox One X is coming?

thatguyhayat2929d ago

Patcher baffles himself sometimes. Ps4 pro is doing really well

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2929d ago

Agreed. If 1 in 4 PS4's being sold is a Pro anything Pachter says about PS4 Pro sales numbers should be completely ignored.

bigmalky2929d ago

You can buy a PS4 Pro, with Horizon and Wipeout for £350 in the UK at the minute. Basically, you're getting the console for £280... I'd say that's a bargain. Why do people keep asking for another £50/$50 off when plenty of places do bundle deals with great prices?

Ju2929d ago

I have the feeling there is a price cut coming for the holidays.

LamerTamer2929d ago

They will have a hard time with X1X out.

bigmalky2929d ago

No they won't. Most parents will probably go for the cheaper option for Christmas presents. Most gamers that were waiting for a price for XoX, unless they're die hard Microsoft fans or spec junkies, will see that Sony have a cheaper option with huge exclusives coming in the new year, along with third party titles that will probably look little different to their XoX counterparts.

It's amazing how biased opinions seem to speak for the entire gaming population, instead of looking at people as beings that can, and will, use logic.

Petebloodyonion2929d ago

Most parents will go for the basic version of Ps4 or Xbox1 instead of a pro or X1X.
Most parents will ask if it's play COD, FIFA or GTA since theses are the biggest sellers on both platforms.
Most parents don't have freaking clues about the exclusives coming on Xbox or PS4 just like you probably don't have a clue about exclusive deals coming on Apple music.

It's amazing how N4G hardcore gamers seem to speak for the entire gaming population, instead of looking at people as beings that can, and will, follow the herd of COD/ GTA/ FiFA.

bigmalky2929d ago (Edited 2929d ago )

@Petebloodyonion

If you read my post properly, you'll see that I said parents will go for the cheaper console. I never even mentioned whether that's the upgraded models or not.

As for the games, it was in regard to gamers wanting a console, not the parents. Totally different sentence and subject.

It's amazing how people would actually look less like idiots if they actually read an entire post, before jumping on someone's comments.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2929d ago

If Sony drops the price of the Pro and it's $150 cheaper than the $500, checkerboarding beast, the only thing Sony will have a hard time doing is shipping Pro's to retailers.

bigmalky2929d ago

They don't need to drop the price. You can buy a Pro with one or two games in a package for £100 cheaper than an XoX with nothing on it's release.

LIGATURE2929d ago

I love ps4 but if the x gives all the multiplat games at least 1080/60 and update past multiplat games then id go for the x.but id get a switch before ither😂
