Considering the prices of NES games on the Virtual Console, $2 a game seems like a steal.

nevin12776d ago

Since you can't add to the game library, I don't think it's worth it.

Neonridr2776d ago

based on how it has sold, I would like to think that many do.

I mean how much could you honestly expect for a system with 30 classic titles, many of them are quite amazing, along with the hardware to play it.

knock off mini consoles sell for like $30 that play garbage games, so I don't know what people's expectations are in terms of pricing.

iplay1up22775d ago

Its selling really well, of coarse Nintendo created a shortage. I am going to pick one up like next year.
My next Wii U purchase is Tokyo Sessions FirenEmblel, then my Nintendo dollars are being put away for Switch, I want the Zelda bundle (if its true) $349 Zelda BOTW, Pro-controller, Switch.

Also March sees Yooka Kaylee....plusnI want at least one more switch game at launch!

ZeekQuattro2775d ago

And then you would complain that you would have to pay for added games. lol If you can't find a game to play out of those 30 then it sounds like a personal problem.

Fist4achin2775d ago

I think it's an opportunity for gamers interested in giving the oldies a try. That's when games were pretty unforgiving as opposed to respawning immediately. I gained Dark Souls on a sidescroller and then getting your assistance kicked by an 8 bit block and and having to start all over again after careful grinding for a couple of hours. I know I threw my NES controllers a time or two as fat as the cord allowed...

At least you know what you're getting with this mini console, a plug and play retro experience, if you can see value in spending a $1000 on a tv to replay all your last gen games on, then people seeing value in spending $60 on novelty item is not such a stretch

darthv722776d ago

Personally I'd like to see them release other classic editions as well (after these are well stocked). This will be the 1st and the 2nd will have 30 different games. Possibly even make a 3rd with 30 more games.

They aren't meant to replace the original in any way but just provide the nostalgia and convenience of plugging in and playing when you want. Like previous 'flashback' systems from sega, coleco and atari.

ocelot072776d ago

I have no issue with this. It's sold really well. But I think not being able to load more games onto is a silly idea. I think the Sega Mega Drive rerelease adds more value. It costs less and comes with 2 controllers. Has 80 built in games. As well as being able to insert your old mega drive games into it.

Or the super retro trio console. Where you can play your old Mega Drive, NES and Super NES games and it costs the same as the Mini NES.

Even the Atari Flashback and the ZX Spectrum Recreated are a little cheaper and offer more value (in my opinion).

The controllers are replaceable though and 3rd party ones already exist (though just as hard to find as the console itself....)

Microsoft's Xbox gaming handheld will fail unless someone else makes it

Despite Microsoft's experience in hardware manufacturing, I don't trust it not to fumble its first gaming handheld device which may eventually lead to a successor not getting released.

Unless it has some fature that really makes it standout I don't think someone who wants a handheld will pick it when the Switch 2 is just around the corner and the Steam Deck offers a huge library with much better prices worldwide

OtterX12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

Especially since the existing PC handhelds (Steam Deck, ROG Ally, etc) can already run Gamepass. I don't have a Steam Deck yet, but I did see Forza Horizon 5 already running pretty well on it natively, so I'd imagine most XBox exclusives on Steam would run pretty well too. The most Microsoft could do is try to brute force a more expensive, higher power handheld. I doubt it would do well if that were the case.

ABizzel19h ago

This has been my point. It’s too little too late, and there are too many options out now that can already do the same thing with similar or better tech, in a similar price-range. A best case scenario for them is slightly above Steam-Deck performance at $100 less, but that’s not a huge selling point for anyone who has already jumped into the handheld PC market, and people still on the fence. Or go the other route of as cheap as possible but making it a streaming only device around $199.

It would do well and reach over 1m sold just because of the Xbox branding, but their consoles are already selling less and less (by the looks of it), so I don’t see a handheld being this great savior for them.

They simply need to rebrand one of the Surface tablets into the device with dedicated controls and more gaming focused, and call it a day instead of heavily investing in a handheld

VariantAEC4h ago

I'm guessing Xbox Wireless will be a streaming system like PS Portal. And yes I fully expect their portable Xbox to be given a really stupid name like "Wireless." Maybe even a dumber name like the Xbox Series W.

Jingsing14h ago

Doesn't make much sense to have a handheld that is locked down to the Xbox ecosystem when the PC handheld can run everything. I'm sure the same people that bought the Xbox fridge will give Microsoft their free money though.

Microsoft handheld Qualcomm based... you will see it next year... and you will see it sink.

China/Russia plain and simple. Chinese are producing their own chips and to catch up they do what they have always done……steal it. When you can’t innovate, stealing is your best friend.
