Without its deleted finale, Metal Gear Solid V has no ending at all

Episode 51 is what the entire game, and potentially the entire series, was meant to build toward.

Entire article is a giant assumption, get over it, it was a single mission that, from what we've seen, didn't really add much anyway. It tied up one loose end and hardly affected the story since we know how liquid and Mantis end up anyway.

_-EDMIX-_3126d ago

I was just going to say that, a lot of people's assumptions about Metal Gear Solid 5 ending sounds like they're just a wild exaggerations and Wishful Thinking .

if the story was any indication of how the ending possibly was going to be I'm not sure it really matters all that much especially since we're talking about a prequel and talking about something that's already known to already happen anyway..

I was happy with my experience of Metal Gear Solid 5 and don't necessarily care how the ending wrapped up it doesn't take away from the amazing 100 hours I had with the game.

Lightning Mr Bubbles3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

I can honestly say, I didn't even know when I had beat MGS5. I kept doing side missions expecting the next story mission to pop up eventually and when it never did, I finally looked online to see what I was missing or doing wrong, and I found out I had already beat the game. I guess the ending is when Quiet finally talks in order to have you rescued, that was the closest thing that felt like an ending emotionally, but because the game is so weird I still didn't know I had beat it. Then you do a mission where you find out that you're not the real Snake. And I guess that was the end, but you can still keep playing doing side quests.

C-H-E-F3125d ago

I actually still haven't beat it, I did the same thing with Guns of the Patriots, I took my time around 3 years to beat it. because I just wanted to explore the game, and enjoy it. MGS, is one of the few games that I just take in so slow. I think I just made it to Africa, about 2 months ago. lOl.

SoulMikeY3126d ago

I wonder how many people actually finished the game.... obviously not many if this is an article.

The ending is VERY clearly defined with Venom getting attacked in like 1994 or whatever year Metal Gear took place. Where you do the whole opening sequence again...

lunatic00013126d ago

it still blows my mind this game got the rave reviews it did...the second part had lots of missions from the first half of the game...just harder????....really

gninja923126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

many of the reviewers were flown out by konami and played the game under very strict circumstances, they basically one-upped Call of duty when it came to "buying the reviews"

Tapani3126d ago

You don't need to do the harder level side missions, I didn't any of them, or maybe only one or two mandatory ones to proceed with the story.

I think it's a masterpiece in many ways. I don't also accept the criticism that it doesn't have an ending. I think it was the game's style from the beginning not to have too much directed content thrown at you and it had plenty of important plot points covered for the series. The codecs reveal plenty as well. I actually kind of liked the ending, it grew on me over time. MGS V is superb and I will probably play it through again in a few years, just like every MGS game so far.

lunatic00013120d ago (Edited 3120d ago )

i know you dont have to play the repeated missions but that cuts the 2nd half of the game as most were repeated mission from the 1st half...don't get me wrong...i liked the gameplay but i just felt that it was all over the place especially the second half of the game...its like they were developing the second act and just said screw it..lets just throw in missions from the first act and make it harder...that just me..i love mgs and i don't consider it a failure by any means but its not the masterpiece that people say either

PhoenixUp3126d ago

I really don't care about the missing chapter, I'm actually surprised many people aren't even concerned about Chapter 2 being just a rehash of previous missions on harder difficulty

Number-Nine3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

I get sad thinking that this was the last Kojima MGS game. No proper send off to an amazing series. It was not a good game.

_-EDMIX-_3126d ago

I'm sorry but that's a complete exaggeration.

Metal Gear Solid V is an amazing game they simply do not have all the legal rights to do what they want with that series, I'm sure the director and writer would have loved to had a more interesting story but they do not own the intellectual property.

When you have fan extremist exaggerating every single Last Detail I start to just disregard most of their opinion anyway , this game is of the highest caliber of game that you do not see all the time I'm pretty positive we can't even name a close second to Metal Gear Solid 5 in regards to stealth Action this gen.

IndominusRex3126d ago

The mechanics are nice, but the missions get repetitive

Name Last Name3126d ago

That last sentence is stupid. We can't compare it to another stealth game this gen. Does it mean its great?

_-EDMIX-_3126d ago

@name- what would your suggestion actually be? Use another genre as an example? That makes more sense?

Hitman released, Thief released in a few other games that fit the stealth Action genre. Like I said above I believe you guys are wildly exaggerating the game.

@indominusRex- DAT NAME DOE! LOL

I agree but it had all the staple missions that you technically get from Metal Gear Solid, mission where you ride along and shoot, a mission and what you're fighting a sniper and clearly stealth missions to infiltrate and or to save as well as the classic torture scene.

It merely had more of the missions that we got from previous Metal Gear Solid games as just single missions which I'm actually completely fine with.

I understand that it does get repetitive but it's still actually has more variety by default than any other Metal Gear Solid game in regards to its Mission structure.

Chumdiddy3125d ago (Edited 3125d ago )

Man, I'm a mega fan and MGSV was trash by MGS standard. I don't even care who is at fault and it's likely a bit of both Konami and Kojima. It's an 8/10 AAA title and that would be fine if not MGS.

You have story missions (STORY MISSIONS!) in the 2nd chapter of a 2 chapter game that are just repeat missions from chapter 1. Nobody worth half a turd spends $80M and 5+ years on a game only to gimp half of it with repeat filler.

Skull Face? He goes from awesomely set up enemy in GZ to a ghost in V. He was the definition of a McGuffin. We don't even fight him but kill him off in the most corny, chiche' way possible.

Other than gameplay mechanics and visual/engine optimization, what exactly was so amazing about it? The 3 words we hear Venom (Sutherland) speak? The horribly edited and developed story of Quiet (my fav character, btw)? Skull Zombie Unit? The 18 hours of tapes explaining highly important and deeply detailed plot points in place of cut scenes?

I could go on forever. For a MGS title it was a bad game. Easily the worst of the major platform releases.

CrimsonWing693125d ago (Edited 3125d ago )

In no way is MGS V an amazing game, sure they had something with the controls and the possible ways you can infiltrate a mission... but an ending that just comes out of nowhere, a really messy narrative with tons of plot holes (not in the typical MGS convoluted sense), and bafflingly repeating chapter missions, like I mean making a legit later chapter the same damn mission as an earlier one, is completely inexcusable.

Had any other game pulled this same garbage, let's say for the sake of arguing, had Capcom made a similar game like this for a new IP, people would be calling for heads to roll. I like Metal Gear, hell I'm a Metal Gear fanboy, but I absolutely hate MGS V. It could've been amazing but it's an unfinished concept that was rushed and people ate it up with rose colored glasses.

_-EDMIX-_3125d ago (Edited 3125d ago )

"Other than gameplay mechanics"

Lol

Yes other than gameplay mechanics what was fun about a game? /s

Were you planning to actually play Metal Gear Solid V or watch it?

I agree the story is not stellar and it's easily the worst story in the Metal Gear Solid Universe in my opinion but I think many of you guys seem to be forgetting that Metal Gear Solid is a game first in a story second I'm not entirely sure why people are putting so much emphasis on the story as if this is a movie and the goal was to watch it primarily.

Metal Gear Solid 5 in regards to gameplay is by default the best this team has ever done as you're already doing all the things that you normally do and all the previous Metal Gear Solid but to a higher extent and at some point you're doing things inside the game that I've never been done in any Metal Gear Solid prior to it.

I love the story and universe in Metal Gear Solid and I definitely agree that Metal Gear Solid 5 is not the best , but I do not want a repeat of Metal Gear Solid 4 in which literally almost half of the game was actually videos if you look up online you'll actually see that of 20 hours of the game 8 hours are cut scenes. I'm sorry but regardless of how you feel about the Universe I don't believe that gamers are all okay with playing a game in which almost half of it is merely sitting down and watching.

Can you even name something that Metal Gear Solid 5 is actually lacking? By default it actually has all the game play types that are in the previous Metal Gear Solids and more. You did not have numerous partners and Metal Gear Solid, you did not have a continuous day and night cycle that affected the game in previous Metal Gear Solid, you did not have something like mother base and which specific features could be given to you during the game none of those things existed in previous Metal Gear Solid games this is where I'm saying they hate is a complete exaggeration I understand the story is not that good but what on Earth were you planning to do with this game other than watch it if you're more angry about a story then about the game itself?

I'm sorry but Chum and Crimson both of you or more so fans of the story than you ever were at the game, I'm a person that actually I'm a fan of both and I agree with both of you in the regards that the story was not that goo,d but I completely disagree with saying to the extent that it was not an amazing game simply because you guys did not like the story especially considering reading your post the majority of your anger is regarding a story as opposed to the game if you purchased it with the understanding of just listening to a story then that's on you , you already by default omitted your opinion to most Gamers because what you're saying is you care about the story how many gamers do you believe are purchasing a game to watch it?

So what would be better to you guys if the game was 20 hours instead and 8 hours was cut scenes if the story was good? How many people do you honestly believe want less of a game and more of a movie?

I have MGS5 but still don't understand if it's Snake or an imposter playing Boss. Can someone enlighten me with a youtube link or something?

Number-Nine3126d ago

Venom Snake is an imposter. Big Boss and Ocelot hypnotized a Soldier while he was in a coma to think he was Big Boss to keep the real Big Boss off the grid.

Nu3126d ago

Shit they did some great hypnosis because the Imposter seems badass

gninja923126d ago

if you take the time to notice, when u get all the bionic arm upgrades. Snake runs faster than any staff member.

Master of Unlocking3125d ago (Edited 3125d ago )

Hold on... I thought we played as Big Boss in MGS V GZ & TPP? Like, THE Big Boss who set up a nation of mercenaries known as Outer Heaven, that has a giant bipedal robot equipped with nuclear warheads, and we had to infiltrate in the original Metal Gear game released back then in 1987 for the MSX2 and the NES?
Why would they come up with something like that?
Isn't the ending of MGS V TPP supposed to tie-in with the beginning of the 1987 Metal Gear?

CoPilot: Gaming Chat is an amazing revelation - A true gamer friend at your side

CG writes: In this video, we take Microsoft's Copilot for a spin and talk about gaming and AI influences, and the implications of that. We talked about a possible Metal Gear Solid V remaster, Deus Ex remaster, Hitman Blood-Money mission, and more. Imagine trying to talk gaming with non-gaming friends in real-life and after 5 seconds, they switch off and possibly yawn. Well, CoPilot isn't like that, instead it's like talking to a like-minded gaming fan who is totally on your level. The public version of CoPilot released in Feb 2023 and already it's become almost indistinguishable from a real person.

No. But MGS5: Ground Zeroes might actually be one of the greatest Game Demo ever, if not the best.

xHeavYx341d ago

I know a lot of people didn't, but I actually liked that story twist at the end. The game was fun and all, but I wouldn't call it a timeless classic.

Cacabunga340d ago

Metal Gear legend stopped with number 4.
MGS5 needed a year or 2 more of development to be maybe among the classics.. it was clearly rushed, especially at the end. The story teaches us absolutely nothing new.

just_looken341d ago

A demo is free that was a $40 cry for help as later we would know konami did not want to fun hideo and his team anymore that is why we got the unfinished phantom pain.

-Foxtrot341d ago (Edited 341d ago )

Meh

Great stealth gameplay but the game was just average.

Bland open world that felt lifeless, the story felt shoehorned in, unfinished story etc. The whole thing was just average to me compared to the other main titled games.

I would have rather preferred it if they kept Ground Zeroes for the main game as the opening and the rest of the game turns into a Metal Gear 1 & 2 remake to bring things full circle.

just_looken341d ago

If you dig around they had old behind trhe scenes of phantom pain vids and books wrote around the time.

Before funding was puled the main idea was to keep peace walker coop it was in the games early builds and that end game were your building your base that was suppose to be metal gear one.

You as the fake big boss was going to make your own metal gear one map aka your base (outer heaven) then me as sold snake use the mode that is in the game invade/defeat the base even fight your current version of metal gear that was in the game but not finished.

So your idea was on the table bit got canned.

CrimsonWing69341d ago (Edited 341d ago )

Like hell it is. That was the first time I became aware of being sold an unfinished game and was blown away about blind fanboys saying it was some perfect game.

Yea, the first few chapters were great until they do that thing halfway and make you replay all the missions again. Then little things like capturing animals but only seeing a JPEG unlike 3 where everything was modeled out. Areas were massive, desolate, and boring to look at.

Game was a massive let down for me and the potential was so high for it. Honestly, this was one of the most disappointing games I ever played. What’s worse is it starts off brilliant. You literally play through until you get to the point where you could tell they just stopped developing and then quickly used glue and construction paper to “finish” it and then sold it. Quite frankly, that’s insulting to consumers and fans.

Inverno341d ago

People have selective memory. This game had huge drama attached to it, what Konami did to Kojima and this game was horrible. Now they praise Konami cause they revived Silent Hill, even though SH looks half arsed too.

CrimsonWing69341d ago

I dunno if they’re getting much praise after the Silent Hill 2 debacle. Makes me scared sh*tless for the MGS 3 Remake…

Michiel1989340d ago

I don't wanna defend konami, but Kojima had 7 years to make the game, it's not that weird for a publisher to expect a game to be finished in that amount of time.

Also no one is praising konami from what I've seen, they're just excited that a Silent Hill game is releasing

CrimsonWing69340d ago (Edited 340d ago )

@Michiel1989

You’re absolutely correct. Look, the dude is a visionary and has brought us some incredible games, but he constantly would go over budget and could never stick to a deadline. I don’t know if people remember the MGS 4 trailers but it became a joke when you’d see a release date and then they crossed it out in the next trailer to give another.

What a lot of people don’t know is there’s a certain amount of money given for development and marketing. When you go over the budget and add additional marketing over the deadline it isn’t cheap. MGS GZ and V were laughable to me for the amount of time he had to develop them and he spent even more time on the engine that wasn’t anything revolutionary to me. I mean, GZ was nothing more than a demo and they released that art like $40 I think, probably to further help fund V. He then spent money for Kiefer Sutherland who did nothing for the character, which I think Kojima just wanted because he’s a fan.

Konami just had enough and said this is the deadline and you’re done after this. It’s business, but fans took it personal. I mean look at this Overdose game he’s been doing.,, like when is that ever coming out?

Michiel1989339d ago

I kind of forgot about overdose but yeah exactly my thoughts. He has made some of the best games out there and definitely deserves time to create his new masterpiece, but it's not a bottomless well.

This is pure speculation but I imagine he got around 4 years to make the game excluding pre-production. If after those 4 years the game is nowhere near being done, the relationship will be strained between them one way or another.

about the konami being praised thing, if let's say blizzard announces world of warcraft 2 today I'll be excited as hell for the game, but that doesn't mean my opinion of blizzard changes only a tiny bit cause they're still trash.

Yui_Suzumiya340d ago

Yeah, it was the only MGS I didn't play and this is coming from someone who got back into gaming after skipping a generation due to MGS4 back in 2008. It just seems to be the complete opposite of the MGS I always knew and loved (1-4).

JEECE341d ago

Yes and no. In many ways in was a great game; there's a very strong argument that it has the best gameplay of any MGS game, and that it is one of the more interesting open world "playgrounds" we have gotten, in terms of how the world operates. But as an MGS narrative, it is pretty far down the list, for many reasons.

Storm23341d ago

I don't think there is any argument. The gameplay was incredible. But yeah...disappointed in the rest. Could have been incredible but...well...we all know what happened...

JEECE339d ago

I don't think there is much of one either but apparently some people found the world very boring compared to the more linear structures of other entries so I didn't make a definitive statement in order to acknowledge the outliers.

DarXyde340d ago

The thing about Metal Gear Solid is that the narrative is what determines which is your favorite because the gameplay had ALWAYS improved with every mainline entry. It's amazing.

If it was gameplay, we'd all say The Phantom Pain, but the story is what truly sets them apart.

For me, that's Snake Eater, which is also my favorite game of all time.

JEECE339d ago

That's my favorite too, particularly if we are talking about the subsistence version with camera control.

Fishy Fingers341d ago

For me, best gameplay, worst, everything else.

Storm23341d ago

Yeah...gameplay was so damn good.
