Does Square Enix Heart The Wii?

Back in 2007, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada came out and publicly denounced the Wii, likening it to a "toy" rather than a real gaming machine. Interestingly, he wrapped his insult in a bundle of compliments for another, unlikely competitor, the Xbox 360:

"I think the current trend is that most people aren't buying the Wii as a game machine, but as a toy," said Wada in speaking with CNET Japan. "The Wii is the antithesis of the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 is strictly for hardcore gamers. The attachment rate for the Xbox 360 is much higher than for the Wii. People who buy the 360 really like games."

Well they threw out a few games on the system already and they still have FFCC Crystal Bearers being made for it and that Soul Eater game. They are just taking their sweet time with it just like they have been with the PS3 and 360.

The amount of Square Enix support for the Wii has been pathetic.

But how can the company answer its shareholders if the Wii is the highest-selling console so far this gen and they still aren't selling software for it?

It's all about which platform SELLS games. The wii almost has a higher install base than the PS3 and 360 combined, and look at the support it's getting.

Just as a hypothesis - if the ps3 has say 15 million machines with a 4-1 ratio of games it sells per machine.

And lets say the wii has 30 million machines with a 2-1 ratio for games it sells per machine...arent they gonna sell pretty much the same amount of games>?

What im saying is...if the wii has double the machines, doesnt that mean the ps3 would have to sell twice as much software just to get square with em...pun intended.

Considering every console has a SE franchise exclusive to them Kingdom Hearts is the last franchise without a platform annouced, this is why its very likely it will be exclusive to the Wii

They make reference to the wii being a toy, yet they remade ff3 exclusively for the ds and a 3-d remake of ff4 which was only a few years previously ported to the gba. The love the ds and hate of the wii is a little disappointing. And since when did they endorse the 360? i only knew them to be ps fanboys since they left nintendo after a 6 game relationship.

Their games are targetted at the console on which it will hopefully make the most money. For this reason I think that Kingdom Hearts will come out on the wii simply because, although the game holds appeal for more mature gamers, it is aimed at a younger audience than ffXIII.

I agree with him, the Wii seems like a trend or "toy" for the masses. But it doesn't mean it is not capable of having awesome games, and it does have them right now.

The Wii is a gaming system for 3 reasons:
The Wii has games, made by Nintendo, and is revolutionary in a way with it's motion control. If the Wii wasn't a system, it would be a toy like a HyperScan or a Playdia. Just because the Wii is not a really powerful system it is a not a toy. It is not all about the hardware the system uses. It is the games. The games is what really define a system. I enjoy the games like Metroid Prime 3, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In the history of gaming, from the Magnavox Odyssey to the Wii, the most powerful console was never the winner!!! I don't want to buy a really powerful system with no good games. I want to have fun.

The least graphical console has won every gen so far, meaning real gamers don't really care for graphics as much as they do gameplay. Why else would Gameboy trump Gamegear, and DS beat PSP? and Wii beat PS3 and Xbox 360.

I'm not caring at the moment. If they have some games on the Wii then good for them. They can and will be replaced. There's lots of shake ups and hopefully their next batch of games sell to the FPS guys on the other system.

Another thing is Square is in the same boat as many companies but even worst now because they bet on the HD consoles just so they could make"their vision" which unfortunately maybe needs a PC' GPU to get the job done. I mean HD console owners did not pay $600 for pre-render cut scenes. They simply bet on the wrong horse then they failed to realize that SONY and MS where not really trying to be in the hardcore gaming biz yet the set top box biz. The guy even spoke out about that but judging my the tecmo take over letters he does really listen or play well with others.

Yet the article reads like a fanboy who is trying to hate Squareenix simply because he ignores the stuff they have put out on the system.

"They can and will be replaced" Agree 100% with that statement. I'll add my own opinion that SE has really fallen off their game. FF12 was very weak compared to previous iterations. And they as well as many others invested heavily in the HD consoles and that bet has lead them to the red.

wii will probably get a spinoff of kingdom hearts but its gona be exclusive for ps3 then maybe be ported to 360 the main series . IM SORRY TO SAY.

Yep if I were square enix I'd most definitely put Kingdom Hearts on Wii. Be in a port of the originals, or the new one, I'd do it.

since square merged with Enix, they are acting strange, just like when they moved FF13 to the 360, heck, i know i lot of ppl that had brought a PS3 because they already had announced the game for it, and now this same square fans hate them.

this gen is looking grim to SE...
