Horizon Zero Dawn PS4 Pro 4K Tech Analysis: Hidden Graphical Details You May Have Missed

Horizon Zero Dawn is the new in-thing from Killzone developers Guerrilla Games. As a PlayStation exclusive, Horizon: Zero Dawn is free from the technical constraints imposed by multi-plats. Guerrilla's no stranger to PlayStation exclusives, having developed Killzone 2 and 3, among the finest-looking console games of the last generation. Likewise, Killzone: Shadowfall, the series' first eighth-gen entry, featured the kind of revelatory visuals that gave console owners a legitimate reason to buy the PlayStation 4 at launch.

Horizon ZD is the next exciting big thing in gaming.

gameseveryday3135d ago

Yep one of the best looking open world games so far.

ShadowKnight3135d ago (Edited 3135d ago )

It really does for a console game. But Uncharted 4 looks better than a lot of PC games I've played so I'm not really surprise. This is the power and talent of first party studios. Can't underestimate the power of the Sony Jedi's lol

Genuine-User3135d ago (Edited 3135d ago )

The engaging and challenging combat of Horizon has me most excited because it's almost never this good in an open world game.

S2Killinit3135d ago

Its looking promising to say the least.

miyamoto3133d ago

And the prospect of open world means lots of replay value.

JunMei3135d ago (Edited 3135d ago )

I might have to get a PS4 Pro, anyway. Though I'm still quite upset about the exclusion of 4K Bluray. I bought a PS2 because of the games and because of the ability to play DVDs. Same with the PS3. I already own a PS4, which plays bluray and the same games.... and I don't own a 4K TV yet, anyway.... I changed my mind. I'm going to wait. PS4 Pro was going to be the catalyst to get me to buy a 4K TV assuming I could play 4K blurays(I'm a huge film buff), and I really don't want to buy an Xbox.... I suppose I'll be waiting until another release or PS5.

I'll definitely be picking up this game, though.

phoenixwing3135d ago

I don't blame you for waiting. I decided I'd wait too and just play my original ps4. Plus when you do finally decide to go 4k you'll get a much better tv for the price.

Tapani3135d ago

If you are really a home theater guy, I'm sure you can afford $500 UHD player that will definitely deliver a better picture and sound than any UHD console will in the next few years.

medman3135d ago

I'm personally waiting for the Oppo udp-205 uhd 4k player....the standalone's will definitely give you the more full featured offerings and performance.

Aenea3134d ago

Or make use of MS their price stunting this holiday season and grab a 500GB Xbox One S for perhaps as low as $200!

Even if you just use it for just UHD blurays it's a nice deal. Though, honestly, I would grab a handful of X1 exclusives too while I was at it.

For me tho, I haven't watched a movie of a disc for over 10 years, I don't need aUHD Bluray player. Still don't have a 4k TV which I will get early next year (or late this year if there's a good enough deal). So I'm going with the Pro now, then a 4k TV, then an NX and since I still want to try some of the Xbox One exclusives will get a Scorpio next year to complement my current gen set :)

Ohh and the year after a new gaming capable PC.

Pfft, costly hobby, gaming :)

JunMei3134d ago

Price isn't really the issue. More like the idea of saving space and feeling like I'd rather have a device that does it all. I haven't bought a single use device since my first DVD player. I might play wait and see, and then if Sony doesn't do anything, then I just make my move, buy a 4K TV and a 4K player.

Maybe I'll even consider 4k bluray from Xbone. I have most of the exclusives on PC already, however, I'd love to play Halo again and backwards compatibility is a plus too.

Thank you everyone who provided me with input!

KakashiHotake3135d ago (Edited 3135d ago )

I'm in the same boat as you. I was really hoping that PS4 Pro had a 4k bluray player and i actually own a 4k HDR TV. However I mostly stream and download everything now all accept games which is why I can overlook it's absence. But still I'm gonna wait until I can see some games running on the console in person at a local gamestop or bestbuy to see for myself if the improvements are worth it. it's hard to get a feel for it just watching these videos. I'm very much satisfied with my current PS4 and am looking forward to all the new games coming out.

medman3134d ago (Edited 3134d ago )

@Aenea @kakashihotake
Personally, neither the xbox one S, or presumably the ps4 pro (even if it had a 4k uhd drive) would have fit the bill for me, as the xbox one S currently doesn't support Dolby Vision, nor does it support bitstream Dolby Atmos or DTS:X audio formats. The ps4 pro likely would not have either, so for those with the equipment to utilize those setups, the consoles become inadequate when it comes to delivering the very best in 4k video/audio that is currently available.

DJ3135d ago

Same here. Plus my current HDTV looks great and plays PS4 games just fine. I just can't justify ditching a perfectly good TV and Console to get slightly better graphics. Something would have to break. And I really doubt that will happen.

KakashiHotake3134d ago

It's pretty sad how you can get downvoted for speaking logical.

mogwaii3135d ago

One thing i did notice in that pro footage presentation is a big use of fog to cover lack of decent draw distance.

fenome3135d ago (Edited 3135d ago )

Supposedly there's a weather and day/night cycle that they haven't shown off yet so maybe that could actually just be fog...

mogwaii3135d ago

It was bright and sunny. Its draw distance fog.

fenome3135d ago (Edited 3135d ago )

Good point. Lol. I'm on media blackout for now so I don't ruin it for myself when I play, guess I'll see it then. I shouldn't even be commenting on this, guess I can't help myself sometimes .

DJ3135d ago

Why did everyone disagree with Mogwaii? It's true. The PS4 Pro games are still limited in much the same way as PS4 Normal games. Whatever the PS4 normal can handle, that's what the Pro game can handle. Albeit at a higher resolution and with better AA. But don't expect devs to bend over backwards to make the Pro version look significantly better. Between PS4 Normal, PS4 Pro and PSVR, there's a lot of user scenarios to test for now.

OB1Biker3134d ago (Edited 3134d ago )

Or maybe, maybe they 'use' fog because there's fog on the planet giving a particular atmosphere to the game instead of 'to cover lack of decent draw distance'

It's not like, all of a sudden, there can't be a 'decent' draw distance in PS4 games anymore

StormLegend3134d ago

Who cares? Why would you even need to even look that far away? Once you start moving closer, things will show more clearly

RevXM3134d ago (Edited 3134d ago )

Or it is just fog.
The fog is placed near the ground and foliage and it is creeping up along mountains like they would in a humid climate.
The game can clearly render things far away as not all far away objects are fully covered in fog.

If you have walked outside in real life youd see that far away things appear blurry due to humidity and the nature of particles and lighting so having everything look clear and crisp would look more awful to be honest than some somewhat exaggerated fog and humidity effects.

Sony Announces Ghost of Tsushima Anime, Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn Movies

Sony is hosting its press conference at the start of CES 2025 in Las Vegas. As usual, PlayStation took the spotlight during the presentation, but not in the way you'd expect.

I can’t even imagine a helldivers 2 movie.
Hopefully they do it good

Cacabunga109d ago

Next is Horizon card game… the milking is unreal

Grilla109d ago

Yeah but with terminator style bots and the Illuminate. More potential imo.

mkis007109d ago

They better not be afraid of leaning into it hard.

S2Killinit109d ago

Im most excited for the Ghost anime.

vTuro24109d ago

I was about to say, they can just copy Starship Troopers homework and change it up a bit so the teacher won't notice.

SeTTriP108d ago

How when the game is literally inspired by a movie?

Goodguy01110d ago

Lmao, sony making more shows, films, and remasters this generation.

Lightning77110d ago

Yet let's ignore Ghost of Yotei, Intergalactic, wolverine and Santa Monica's New IP.

Yep all TV shows and remasters alright.....

Hereandthere109d ago

Ghost of Yotei looks like a ps 4 pro game at best, intergalactic only showed 4 seconds of in game footage, despite being in development for more than 4 years, wolverine might be good, Santa Monica's New IP was just for you to fill space and cover for sonys lack of 1st party games.

DarXyde109d ago

Remasters aren't games?

Didn't realize the same folks making games are also making films and shows (which Sony actually has been making before games, but ok).

Silly comment aside , Ghost of Tsushima as an anime sounds grand. Don't care too much about Horizon or Helldivers media, but it sounds cool to get more Jin.

Army_of_Darkness109d ago (Edited 109d ago )

You do realize Sony has a completely separate movies and tv series division right? They are simply catching on and actually taking advantage of their popular gaming ips

Redemption-64109d ago

Naaaaa, you are supposed to pretend they don't have a completely separate movie/TV division

Lightning77109d ago

@Here uh huh Right watch Ghost Of Yotei get the highest score on meta this year. ND doesn't miss so I expect Intergalactic to be a damn near Master piece, insomniac making Wolverine so you know they'll knock it out of the park. Santa Monica will probably announce their new IP this year and it'll be epic. It's about track record and all these studios have great track records. You wanna argue facts go ahead I'll win.

Lightning77110d ago

I was hoping for live action Ghost but an anime will be just fine.

Grilla109d ago

Last I heard the guy that made the John Wick movies was working on it.

Lightning77109d ago

Now that's gonna freakin dope.

-Foxtrot109d ago

I really hope they get the guy who played Jinn to play him in the film.

Elda109d ago

If true then there's hope.

gigoran8109d ago

out of all the titles they could have chosen, those 3 could actually make decent movies.

-Foxtrot109d ago (Edited 109d ago )

They’ve tried a Horizon series and it fell apart, what makes them think a film is going to work with a shorter run time.

I was hoping the GoT series would focus on Jinn after the main game.

S2Killinit109d ago

Im not sure about the show or why it allegedly fell apart, but the story in Horizon is pretty cool. I can see people enjoying it.

Michiel1989107d ago

they probably recorded some footage for it and now want to make a quick buck out of the remnants. You know what they say: fail once, rip your audience off.

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic152d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23152d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1152d ago (Edited 152d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

Chocoburger143d ago

I didn't like Days Gone either, it doesn't deserve to be on any best of list.

Looks much better. I really like the upgrade to the character models epsecially and the robot dinos too.

GotGame818173d ago

Not worth the money. It isn't like remastered games going from PS3 to PS4, or 360 to Xbox One. Sorry, but those jumps in graphics were extremely noticeable.

REDGUM172d ago

To before it's only 10 bucks i hear if you have the original game. It's worth the tenner in my opinion.
If you didn't have the original you can pick that up for 5 or 10 bucks too on marketplace.

GotGame818172d ago (Edited 172d ago )

You are right, my bad. I didn't know the remaster was only $10 for the update. I thought Sony was pulling a TLOU again. That was ridiculous.

Exvalos166d ago

Its only 10.00......and if you dont have the base game ive seen it in stores as low as 9.99. At max its 19.99. Just admit u broke.
