4K Console Games – Why The Sudden Push? | Ask RGT 85

The PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio are ushering in the era of home console 4K console games, but is this push needed already? Is 1080P fully explored? Are there enough 4K TV owners to warrant this? RGT 85 shares his thoughts.

Console makers have to compete with everything they can, even with tech that rational people knows will be impossible for this generation from both sides.

Nvidia GTX 1080 can barely hit 60fps at 4K with a few titles, that is paired with an i7 processor and 16GB of Ram.

We are talking about a 700$ GPU.

If you think that a 400$ console will achieve equal or more, then you are just delusional.

You're not considering all of the variables though

1. Consoles are better optimized
2. It won't be max settings so 4K should be achievable

Project Scorpio 1st party titles are going to be visual candy

Im considering facts, not hopes and dreams.

1. If a 11TF GPU cant handle 4K at 60fps properly, a 6TF much less. It doesnt matter how optimized the game is, unless it is something like Minecraft.
2. A 1080p game with maxed settings looks better than a 4K with low settings.

Finally, Microsoft 1st Party games are not known to be impressive graphically, unless you are counting 3rd Party Exclusives as 1st Party games of course.

Ryse looks better than Halo 5 and the upcoming Gears of War 4.

If i were you i would keep my expectations in check with the Scorpio. Not only because the console is more than a year away which makes the waiting more exhausting, but because Microsoft 1st Party developers have not managed to squeeze all the power from the vanilla Xbox One, let alone a Spec Sheet in the Scorpio.

Those Scorpio first party titles you speak of...who develops them, and when?! Just asking because Microsoft just decided to start development on the Scorpio when they realised Sony for 3 years had been secretly working on an mid-cycle upgrade to support VR and 4K/HDR.

It is a waste of time. I would of prefered a kick ass 1080p system with a great 4k upscaller than all this useless crap we are getting. Sad.

It just shows the general state of the console crowd too I guess, that doesn't understand anything about graphics quality and thinks resolution is the only thing that matters.

Ps4 and xbox one are 1080 systems. You want them then don't upgrade.

Well sony for one have a vested interest in selling 4k tellies but all the current models have horrendous input lag when running games at 4k with hdr. Im quite happy with my 5 year old 1080p telly until oled prices come down and 4k lag comes down.

He's right. Gaming is kind of stale right now, and that's not because the graphics are bad, or the resolutions are bad. They're just not putting out anything new or interesting. Even Uncharted 4 was the same old thing we've seen on previous titles. The graphics were amazing, but after that initial play through, the game feels like a chore now because the game simply plays exactly like the previous games. I guess that's a good thing, but I'm also sitting here wanting a new EXPERIENCE, not just shinier graphics.

Hello, they just need to sell TVs. Industry needs to have something to show 4k. The only thing they have are videogames.

Really sucks that 1080/60 for graphically impressive games is being skipped for the most part shooting for 4k/30. One HUGE question I have about the pro is will the beefed up GPU take the strain off of the overclocked cpu to allow games like horizon to run 1080/60? Or will they be stuck at 30fps at the beefed up graphics settings. Getting a pro cause I already have 4ktv and getting psvr, but I would appreciate some insight on how the cpu bottleneck will affect graphics and framerate.

To sell more TV, why else? The same reason they were pushing last 3D last gen. Lots of people are happy waiting out their 1080p TVs before getting a 4K tv. So companies like Sony need in give the consumer a reason not to wait.

Sony and others are trying to encourage people to buy 4K TV's. Its why there is a big push. Its no different from the early days of the PS3 when it felt like every other major release at one point had a 3D TV graphic on the box. When the campaign failed that was it for Sony's 3D TVs big push. Now 4K is the next attraction.
