An Update on The Last Guardian

The Last Guardian development team is fast approaching major milestones in production and has made the tough decision to delay the release of The Last Guardian a few weeks. The Last Guardian will launch on December 6, 2016.

Yep, this is actually one of the smarter delays I've seen in terms release frames. October had BF1 and Titanfall 2, with The last Gaurdian releasing midweek between the two.

December has some pretty good titles to, but no monsters like those ones

Sony has been awesome at delaying all their games lately. Hopefully they stop putting dates on their titles.

The Last Guardian isn't a game I'm dying for, so the delay isn't a big deal. But, man does this make Sony look bad at keeping their developers on track to meet their release dates. Not saying the delay is a bad thing, if it fixes even one game breaking glitch, then it's a good delay.

Sony as a publisher had way too many delays though. Yes it's still better than releasing a broken game but it happens too much now. Either set a realistic release date or be realistic about what you want as a developer and develop your game accordingly.

To answer your question; no, delaying nearly all games is not good for fans that feel offended by waiting longer than promissed. Bit still, personally i dont care for delays anymore since i got used to them especially with the games onslaught we experience these days keeps making my back catalog longer and longer.

As for tLG i d rather they delay it another year if need be to make sure they do their best before getting it out. This game is very important it carries a huge legacy and its their duty to deliver after all these years of constant delays.

I don't know how waiting just over another month for this game is a big deal, when all is said and done.

A rather substantial number of your big "exclusives" have been delayed over the years, especially the ones that Phil Spencer promised were part of the 2016 lineup that made Xbox fanboys troll so hard on PS4. In reality, you haven't had a quality AAA exclusive game all year and PS4 has been laying the smackdown all year - as it will beginning early next year, whilst you're left waiting for games and for the Scorpio (lulz).

Just a few months ago this year, Microsoft closed EIGHT of their first-party studios/projects leaving them with a TINY, embarrassing handful of internal studios. Fable Legends was cancelled after years of delays, but that ain't a problem for you.

You've been waiting over 3 years for the opportunity to buy a console that is more powerful than a PS4 whilst damage controlling that power doesn't matter. Meanwhile, Microsoft sold the Xbox One on the "power of the cloud" that they claimed would make XB1 3-4 times more powerful. For years you embarrassments defended those brain dead claims and now you need a separate piece of hardware to achieve the claims embedded Microsoft's lies. And you still believe their claims, after all that. Wow.

Ive defended playstation since ive been on this site, but there comes time when enough is enough and you cannot keep defending these game delays.

No this is not a smart decision, this is not hoping things can be locked down, this is not now they can fix things. This is a prelude to a game that will have a day 1 patch, a significant amount of defects, while not living up to the expectations of their previous titles. It has all the marking of being another No Mans Sky, and they need to be held accountable for this. If you love playstation, hold them to a higher standard. This is absolutely pathetic.

This really is a special case from my POV. They made it very clear that the major delay from 2012 to current day, and absence of 3 years was due to the transistion to PS4. Not only that, but there were times where they had slowed down the development significantly or even ceased it so the game would have not been such a money drain in the meantime.

Portting took a considerable amount of time because once you have built the whole game and all of its core functions to run on a powerful single core processor, reworking the whole game to work across 6 weaker cores will take a decent amount of time. AI of Trico especially, would be very CPU heavy.

So basicly we are looking at 4 years (at least) of effective development with highs and lows, 2-3 years of hiatus, 1-2 years of re-working and engineering the technology and a year of wrapping things up.

Assuming this is correct and they have been honest about the development (and I feel like they have since they have disclosed original development issues, the quiet "hiatus" period, and the portting in recent interviews)

Im not expecting the game to be flawless, but I do anticipate that its going to play and function like it should. If they were to release at the end of October, now would be about the time they would start printting discs and then moving them around. Also considering Uedas somewhat "perfectionist" nature, I do feel the game cannot be released in a broken state.

I love Team ICO, and each delay has its own story, that will never change. However making grandiose statements about dates and large count downs clocks set you up for disappointment.

What they should say is the game will come out ready. Aggressive release dates only set yourself up for failure and poor gameplay experiences. Expect a significant day 1 patch and a lot of defects.

I mean, I acknowledge it might just be me having blind faith, but their "development hell" wasnt exactly typical, and if they really wanted to release a buggy game, they would have released it on the PS3 years ago. I think Ueda said in one interview that they could have gotten the game to run on the PS3, but it would have had disasterous performance issues, and it was Sonys decision to delay and keep a hiatus.

Even the man himself said that he wont play his games in a whole year because he's afraid that he made mistakes, or would regret some decisions really badly. He probably cant watch himself in the mirror if the screws TLGs release so badly.

Maybe Im all in too much of a good faith, but I feel that they wont release a broken mess. This delay just before having to put the discs into the press, sounds like they want to release a whole game, instead of using that time to develop the day 1 patch. The 6-7 weeks they got really isnt that much extra time, so either they are pushing out a game that they barely got working, or they are applying the development of day 1 patch to the game.

Last point I want to make, is that they have delayed the game way too many times and originally said that they didnt want to announce dates until they were 100% sure about the release. After all the good and bad press surrounding the game, its status, and its history with delays, they really cant be seriously considering to release the game half assed.

I simply cant see that happening with all things considered.

At this point, its either or. Either the game will be brilliant, or it will be barely functional. At least its finally coming out :s

The development studio making this Game for gamers to enjoy is a separate independent small studio making the D@mn game!

You rush a artist or sculpter ..which is by the way is bring his vision to life ..that of a
sculpter.

Doing so can cause that Sculpter to resent you...that's the caveat in dealing with an Artists.. Some are so driven and passionate about their work , you can cut their freedom of expression and maybe make a little bit of money , than the artist in Question may say well I'm not only done , but I am now done completely with you..

That's why it's a double edge and difficult relationships you foster over time when building games and studio's.. To maintain this studio is not much, and having such a artist making unique works in gaming is at benefit.

Having said patience with such a person may at time seem daunting.. But you do so out of respect for their Art and passionate drive to make their Art..there is only one

If this game has some length to it.............I'm all for a delay. If this is an less than eight hour liner platformer .................what's the point? To improve on quality?

Games like Limbo and Inside are great games..............for two and a half hours. That's it. Literally. Then you shelve it (even though they are digital, LOL) never play them again. A game like LOTG.........should not be over $20 max. Then I don't have an issue with there short game. I will play this game when it's $20 or below or on PS+ for free. If I have to wait two more years for that price.........so be it.

I'm not downing on the game. I'm sure it a platformers dream. But that much money for a game that will end in less than eight hours I'm guessing. Not only harsh but a gimmick that will hurt the industry. Yeah, we want devs producing less than eight hours games and charging $50-$60 for them.................

Some games just have an experience that is very hard to compress into a objective price point. Since you consider this a "platformers dream", I guess you are not much of a fan of their previous games? I really dont think people play these games because of what gameplay they expect from its genre.

I would totally spend 60€ for 8 hours of what their games have to offer. Put any extra replay on top of that and it will be brilliant. I have played Shadow of the Colossus like 6 or 7 times. Ico only once, but I think I'll play it once before TLG comes out, and again some day.

I will always disagree with paying $60 for short games. Sorry if I can't play the same linear game six times over again to feel like I got my money's worth. Open world? Maybe. Depends on the series I guess. But those games are so large its like your getting a new experience each time almost. Linear, and not only linear, a linear platform game on top of that (I like the genre for $20 or less)..................its the same almost every time.

To each his own though. More power to you if you can rest easy paying that much for such a short game. It kind of scares me though. Games arent 1=1 in what they offer, and they all give different experiences. I can never put a moneytary value on the goosebumps, heart poundings and adrenaline that I got from my first 10 hours of Bloodborne alongside of immersing myself into its world with all these feelings, and I will never get THAT experience by playing 200 hours of GTA5.

I can never put a value on that experience of hanging on a colossus for my dear life for the first time, nor can I ever completely forget and re-learn the mysteries of Ico's castle and puzzles or learn to care for my co-partner. I cant just pay a set amount of money to get that same experience in another game.

I will never experience bonding with Trico in a Battlefield game.

I think there is always line where you can start arguing for value and experience ratio, but based on your comment about this game being a "linear short platformer" and "how platformer fans will probably like it" sounds to me like you watch games from a far too material point of view.

For example, I have enjoyed my 600 hours in both, BF3 and BF4, and the moneytary value is like, what? 2 cents per hour with premium? Thats pretty sweet ratio.

Im not sure though, if I could put that experience above what I experienced by playing and finishing Journey for the first time online.

On the topic of The Last Guardian. Some people have thrown around a idea that the game will have secrets/optional areas that can only be found by replaying the game in NG+ (or whatever you want to call it) with Trico having all the skills and intelligence he/she has gained during the first playthrough. That already would warrant one extra replay. Shadow of the Colossus had a secret that required you to play through the game like 4 times to gain enough strength to climb on top of the main shrine. It didnt even have anything special but was cool as sht!

no man's sky is a cheaply made indie title using smoke and mirrors to disguise a procedural generated sandbox as a game. when the head developer has to go on news outlets and lie about the core mechanics of the game, something is definitely afoot.

i find it funny how people complain about "eight hour" games. they never tell you about the endless times they died and had to start over. this start over time is never added to the recorded playtime. they also never tell you they went online to look up the answer to a puzzle, that would realistically take hours to figure out. nope, these idiots find ways to rob themselves of the experience the developers crafted for them and go online and complain that the game was too short.

As always Sony can do no wrong. I'm truly interested to know if that's true to some of you ps zealots. Seen a number of negative Sony articles arise lately and yet see the same people with justifications every step of the way. You guys know you can be critical and even upset with a decision a company makes and still support them. But no even if Sony banged your mom and killed your dog you would all just nod your head and be like she probably needed it. This game is closer to vapor ware for me. All this time and delays and I've seen one rudimentary gameplay video. To say I've lost faith is an understatement but part of me still believes because of SOTC.

Goes both ways really. Delays are no big deal when MS or Nintendo does them either.

Surely Sony could've pushed this game out the door regardless of what state it is in, just to appease people like yourself that are critical of delays, but where does that get them? Seems like a game 10 years in the making deserves to have a smooth & successful rollout. More publishers could learn something from Sony in this regard. Look at Recore, that was a game that could've most definitely used extra time for polish, yet MS set a date & now the first impressions from gamers are poor ones. Sounds like the game itself is pretty fun & had they delayed to polish loading issues & bugs, gamers would be seeing a different narrative around that game.

Bottom line is that the only group that you or anyone else should take issue w/ when it comes to delays are marketing teams, that are traditionally divorced from actual development & in some cases completely outside of the company altogether, working on a for hire basis. These people need to learn how to better market games so that gamers don't expect a hard & fast date that may not be attainable. Marketers are an annoyance for sure, but I for one applaud Sony for not sending their software off to die in order to be a slave to a release window. That is the true issue at hand today.

I was worried as hell when I saw the headline, but 6 weeks or so isn't so bad. Anything they gotta do to make the best game they can make! I can wait a couple weeks. I was worried this game was going back into limbo and we'd never see it. But they gave us another actual release date. So this is similar to Naughty Dog pushing back Uncharted 4, but still giving us an exact release date while announcing the delay. That game turned out to be amazing, so here's hoping this one does too! I have a great feeling about it! This delay shows they have pride in their project and they want it to come out and be as good as it can be. If they had a piece of crap and they knew it, why delay it? Just get it out the door, 6 weeks wouldn't salvage it, that's how I see it.

delaying to add Pro support for a game with this graphical style is not worth the effort. team ICO games have a look that heavily relies on mist and blur to create a "dreamlike" visual flair. going Pro won't do much for the presentation. hell, the move from PS3 to PS4 wasn't really that dramatic in terms of visuals. Ueda kept the same style in terms of graphics. that being said, i doubt it has anything to do with the Pro.

i do believe, however, it has a lot to do with 2 FPS titans releasing at the same time. sure, they aren't in the same genre or have the same audience, but imagine trying to market and get the last guardian sold while 2 juggernauts are going to toss ass tons of marketing money during those 2-3 weeks. it would be expensive as hell to get ad space at the same time as CoD and Titanfall. hell, i doubt anyone would even see the 10-15 copies of TLG behind mountain piles of Titanfall and CoD.

of course, my real wish is that the delay is to implement VR support for TLG. now, that is something i would burn $500 bucks for.
