Why Last Minute Hardware Changes Are Unlikely for PS4 Neo

Gamers and developers were wowed by the list when Microsoft dropped the news this past E3, but how will Sony answer Project Scorpio's specs with PS4 Neo?

@LordoftheCrumbs
You have issues...

Kingthrash3603211d ago (Edited 3211d ago )

Why can people just wait the 20 hrs until all is known?
Jeeze....last minute click ride.

OT tho.....so what of they don't match the xbox in tf. I don't see ps4 gamers clamoring for power...I don't see ps4 gamers waiting to trade in a ps4 for a Scorpio.
It just dosent matter at this point.
The way I see it , with the talented devs like ND making monster games with just 1 tf...or even less tf with the ps3 tlou...I don't see the point of it. You can have all the power you want, if you don't have the talent to utilize it then what's the point?
If power was the major seller in gaming the pc would be the top gaming place.
Consoles have always been the undercard in power to pc, always will....
Consoles have the exclusive games, plug and play and low price. Period.
We know the scorpio dosent have exclusives, and will come at a "premium price" plug and play is still in the air because they are talking like it will be upgradeable like a pc. Soooo, yeah. All the TF In the world isn't gunna make you a successful console....especially when all your games .....ALL YOUR GAMES ...will be better somewhere else. Man. It's like yall wait to be surprised by the obvious.

Eonjay3211d ago

It doesn't matter. Whatever Sony releases will become the standard. Project Scorpio is Microsoft's last ditch effort to steal some attention. But remember that all of Microsoft's moves are only relevant as they apply to PlayStation. Nothing more. I wish them both the best.

sammarshall1023211d ago

That would mean that there's no such thing as "console only" gamers and we know that isn't true

I'll never play on PC so Xbox One and the Scorpio is the only way I can play the games I like

And power comes into play when it's 2 Trillion Floating-point Operations

Kingthrash3603211d ago

That's the problem. You are thinking console only gamers only.
By making its games available it's cut its potential buyers by alot.
Sure you'll buy a Scorpio. But will it go main stream? Will people spend that much? Will pc/xbo owners buy a Scorpio, or just use the money to buy better stronger hardware....I mean think about it for a sec...pc/xbox gamers no longer need an xbox...especially when they can buy the parts for less and end up with a more powerful pc than a Scorpio.
So all you've done here is make a console that's appealing to console only guys....even more the console guys with pockets deep enough.
Lastly this will make some xbox only guys who are thinking of going pc actually go pc. That way they can enjoy all xbox and pc has to offer. By making your exclusives into Multiplat you've did that in a gain of software and a loss to hardware. The more losses the xbox sustains the more likly they'd stop making them.

Protip: MS will sell windows in any case....xbox is considered a windows machine and it's numbers will reflect on windows sales. Windows level of importance to MS is obviously over xbox since day 1 of og xbox...but now they are not focused on xbox hardware. They are Lazer focused on win 10.
So if you are a console only gamer, you need to realize that a pc focus is the future of the xbox brand.

ShadowKnight3211d ago (Edited 3211d ago )

PC/Xbox owners will probably not buy a Scorpio because it don't make sense when you can play the same games on PC and Xbox one. When it comes to Xbox games PC will be the best version

Aenea3211d ago

As I just wrote in another article, if power was the only reason people buy consoles then why on earth did people buy the X1?

Answer: other reasons than power...

GameNameFame3211d ago

According to Xbox fanboys, there are only Console Only gamers. Despite the fact that discrete GPU is over 100 million in sales.

Most gamers are just gamers. They go where the games are.

Stop making imaginary categories to make yourselves feel better. Xbox has no exclusives and became a steambox. You know how appealing Steambox was? Look at its flop sales.

BLKxSEPTEMBER3211d ago

You don't see PS gamers clamoring for power? You must be joking. It's the only thing PS gamers have been mouthing off about this entire gen. Funny how some of you have selective memory.

Kingthrash3603211d ago (Edited 3211d ago )

You have selective memory.
The reason power was a thing was that the xbox costed more than a ps4...yet HAD LESS POWER.
But yeah. Selective.
Also I remember how MS was saying in it advertising that the xbo "runs games at 1080p 60fps" sounds familiar to the scorpio claims. ..no?

Don (below)
That's what I said.....its an Increase for software and a decrease for hardware......
Oh and you are in a total dream state if you think pc guys will go xbox because xbox games are on pc. Lmao why in God's name would a pc guy go xbox? Why? Like for what tho? Pc guys have steam and xbox games...why would they leave a massive library of games for an xbox?????? What less games and less power are appealing to pc gamers? Pc gamers and the true power gamers. They spend buckets to play games on pc at a higher rate....not to mention mouse and key control...why would they downgrade themselves? That the most delusional thing I've read all day.

its_JEFF3211d ago

No he doesn't, he's just spreading the good word of his lord and savior Xbox One. Xbox One will deliver us to video game heaven, you just need to drink the cool aid, never question the lords word, and bash any other false gods.

It seems crazy but some people treat these consoles like their "God". You can say anything about them if it's not positive or just straight up praising them. Happens on both sides. I like visiting this site from time to time, sometimes more often, but scrolling down a bit into the comments is sometimes painful and cringe worthy.

OT it is probably too late to change the specs, aside of couse straight up delaying the thing or perhaps a clock boost. Of if you wanna get a little crazy you could go with the "rumor" that they had 2 SKU's, one of them being a bit more powerful... but yea.

BrandanT3211d ago

What are you saying? At the start of the generation, PS4 gamers were all over power - obsessed with it.

donthate3211d ago

That is where you are wrong. Having your games go on more platforms for free, actually increases value of said library. You may be a PC gamer now, but you may become a console gamer later and vice versa.

Oh, the fact that MS is focused on Windows 10 is awesome. Why? Because the Xbox platform is Windows 10. That is why consumers are getting so many updates every year with new features.

bafa3211d ago

What's funny is the price point. If neo is 450 to 500 like he said then scorpio is what...600 to 700....

Also hasn't MS already hinted at cloud not living up to how they wanted it when it comes to games? Maybe I'm wrong.

sammarshall1023211d ago (Edited 3211d ago )

It's too late if the Neo really is launching this year but if it releases next year then they'll give up a year on the market

I think Microsoft will still have the most powerful console with the Scorpio

freshslicepizza3211d ago

hmm, nobody agrees, i wonder why?

S2Killinit3211d ago

Well, I disagreed, but it wasmostly because I think people fail to recognize that MS's plan is really to escape this generation and start the next generation as soon as possible in the hopes of forcing the competition to follow suit. Playstation, on the other hand is in the driving seat when it comes to what they want to do. That is why (imo) they are updating the current PS4, so that they can reap the benefits of being the market leader, then once scorpio lands, Playstation will announce the PS5, which will be the most powerful next gen console.

freshslicepizza3211d ago

sony won't announce the ps5 until at least 2018, most likely e3 2019. then microsoft will announce a new system the following year, what's your point?

DigitalRaptor3211d ago (Edited 3211d ago )

They are probably disagreeing being it's Sam Marshall, a lying Xbox fanboy.

Or maybe they are disagreeing because it's just his opinion at the end of the day. The PS4 vanilla didn't need a "year on the market" to run away with its success. What Sam is saying is that he thinks it's too late for Sony to put out a 6TF machine this year, but they are capable of putting one out next year if they forgo a year's lead.... which they don't actually need.

Now let's look at what's happening currently on N4G... numerous Xbox fanboys who you previously defended like brothers in arms are going crazy on here and exposing their true natures, I wonder why.... I wonder why nobody is agreeing with them either.
---------

@ S2Killlinit

Fair point.

Scorpio's jump in specs almost appears to be a new-generation in disguise. Microsoft has bare-face lied before and promised things that they didn't deliver on. They've also cut generations short before, so would it be any surprise to see Scorpio be the new generation? Just a thought.

What you're saying about Sony being in the driving seat is true. They don't need to march to the beat of Microsoft's drum. Bringing out Scorpio with the message of "most powerful" is their admission of defeat, and the fans celebrating it are admitting as much after defending inadequacy for so long. If Sony does react to it and change their plans, I think that would be a weak decision, but they would still benefit from it as the market leader either way. If nothing changes, the PS5 should be delivered when the PS4 generation is coming to a close.

XanderZane3211d ago (Edited 3211d ago )

This is N4G. Home of the Sony fanboy club. Anything postive about the XB1 always gets 100's of disagrees. Nothing new. Not sure what Sony will do. Seems they are already manufacturing PS4 Neo's so it looks like they will go forward with their current specs. They might boost the CPU clock speed maybe. I don't see them launching another new console for at least another 3 years from now. PS5 in 2019 most likely. By then Microsoft will be ready to upgrade the Scorpio.

@GameNameFame
Not even close dude. Come back to reality. More Sony fanboys comment on negative Sony articles, which is why it's closer to 50/50 in agrees and disagrees. I'm a fan of all the systems. Don't think XBox fans comment much on positive Sony articles, but Sony fanboys are all over XB1 articles. Doesn't matter if they are positive or negative. I go to ALL the articles. I don't discriminate. It's easy to see the trends when you've been on the site for so many years.

@sammarshall102
That's exactly right.

3211d ago
sammarshall1023211d ago

PS5 is not releasing in 2018 and even chances of a 2019 launch are slim (no pun intended)

Angeljuice3211d ago

"hmm, nobody agrees, i wonder why?"

Because you commented before they got the chance to you moron.

donthate3211d ago

S2:

Dream on. Do you know why we are getting a new console now?

It is because we have a die shrink, as we went from 28nm to 14nm. That is why price is lower, and performance is so much more up. The next die shrink is 10nm, but they are struggling to get there, and as the numbers imply, the change is smaller than previously. That means performance increase isn't as high, and the price lowering isn't as good. Every die shrink has taken longer and longer to get there, and Moore's Law no longer hold.

Hence why a new console from either MS/Sony after this is going to be a long while. Think 2019-2020 at the earliest. Then the console war is reset once again for another mid-cycle upgrade.

morganfell3211d ago (Edited 3211d ago )

All of these remarks are built upon the supposition that specs for both systems are known. I do remember when it was leaked, likely by Sony themselves, that the PS4 would launch with 4GB of DDR3...

This is all machts nichts since power has never determined who leads in a generation. It is about message and games.

sammarshall1023211d ago (Edited 3211d ago )

I'm sure Microsoft won't ever be caught off guard like that again

Sony changed the ram at the last minute with the PS4 but Microsoft will likely know the Neo specs tomorrow or at the latest by November and know they have a whole year to make a more powerful box

3211d ago
freshslicepizza3211d ago (Edited 3211d ago )

@ImGumbyDammit
"First there never was a rumor about DDR3 (nothing that I remember), it was always rumored to 4GB of GDDR5. Secondly, there is nothing really too complex about adding an additional 4GB of standard (yup nothing special to see here GDDR5). Sony lucked out that the price suddenly drop quite a bit for GDDR5 in 2013 making it feasible for them to do so. Otherwise if those prices didn't drop Sony would have either kept the PS4 with 4GB or (Sony not being a charity) would have passed along the cost of adding that additional 4GB in the PS4's initial list price being $450 or more."

exactly!

"Secondly, comparing a simple standard memory upgrade to the complexities of redoing highly specialized silicon that APU represents in these machines is just foolish . I find it strange that people talk about how expensive the Scorpio will be next year yet think that Sony is a in position to redo the Neo and release device on older technology (using Polaris as Vega isn't out until April 2017) to reach near Scorpio specs (within a 1TFLOP) this year or early next. All this out incurring a great deal of additional cost (in both development and the devices list price). I personally think the rumored 4.2TFLOPS for the Neo is spot on knowing what is doable currently in an acceptable price range of a console."

very true.

"Thirdly, the Neo specs are perfectly fine for what Sony is angling this device for: better 1080 game play, media at 4K and smoother PSVR."

stop it, you are making too much sense.

morganfell3211d ago

The rumor was out there and then transition to GDDR5. Then when Adam Boyes left the meeting with Pitchford and 30 others at Gearbox he went back to Sony and it changed then. Developers were still not made aware and Sony sat on the info of 8Gb until the conference.

starchild3211d ago

Are you really saying things like price and power/visual prowess don't matter?

I'd say that NO SINGLE aspect has ever determined which console sells more in a generation. Fanboys on all sides want to reduce it to just one or a couple factors, depending on what suits the agenda they align with, but it's all a bunch of nonsense. There are easily a half dozen significant factors, as well as a number of other minor ones, that affect people's decisions when buying a console.

MikeNike3103211d ago

@morganfell

This is very true. But I never understood how Microsoft could ever let Sony out power them. They have all of the money in the world. Guess they had they're eggs in the wrong basket.

morganfell3211d ago

Sony is a hardware company and MS is a software company.

DeeBeers3211d ago

Yup. I'm interested to see what Sony has in store, but ultimately doesnt matter. Have my heart set on a scorpio. Almost certainly going to be significantly stronger since it will come quite a bit later on.

Unless Sony decides to push backwards, which would be delightful for a whole different reason XD

Angeljuice3211d ago

I think both Neo and Scorpio will struggle. It's too late in the cycle to be offering upgrades. By the time Scorpio releases everyone will be waiting for the real next gen machines.

I've bought every PlayStation on day one since the original, I have no desire to get a Neo whatsoever.

I'm more than happy with what the PS4 has to offer (I'm never sitting there thinking "I wish the machine had more power"). We haven't even reached the plateau yet (where the limits of the machine become obvious and defined).

MS needs Scorpio to succeed to salvage anything from this generation. Sony have already proven successful, Neo is just a cherry on the top.

DeeBeers3211d ago

Paranoia has gripped the playstation fanbase. WE'RE SURROUNDED BY ROOKIES!! sacre BLEU!

DarXyde3211d ago

What'll be interesting is what the final specs look like. If they're higher than what was rumored, well, that means everyone who said last minute changes were virtually impossible have to admit Sony did, in fact, mislead everyone intentionally and did NOT go back to the drawing board after hearing about Scorpio.

At $400 possibly, I'm not expecting anything much greater than what was rumored though.

Still, it'd be neat.

DarkZane3211d ago

The specs will likely be a little higher because the leaked specs were from a dev kit and not the final product. The final product almost always have more power. Look at the PS4 and Xbox One, their devs kits had 4GB of ddr3 ram. Both were upgraded to 8GB for the final product and Sony even suprised everyone with gddr5.

3211d ago
Neonridr3211d ago

Things like CPU Clock Speed, RAM, HD space can always be tweaked. But the CPU chips and GPU chips would have already been mass produced at this point so they would basically be stuck with whatever they chose originally.

Yes, there is always room for "tweaking" but definitely just marginal things here.

I was hoping the Neo would launch early next year to save my wallet a little since I am also getting the PSVR bundle. But I guess I will find out tomorrow just how much I am dishing out this holiday season :P

Angeljuice3211d ago

That would depend on how "off the shelf" the components are.

If the Neo drops any custom tweeks and just uses standard PC parts, then it could easily be upgraded with very little time required.

3211d ago
Neonridr3211d ago

pretty sure the CPU and GPU will be mounted on the same board. Can't just do this stuff on the fly. It's not like there is a CPU chip and a separate GPU stuck into a box. That sort of stuff needs mass production and time.

DarXyde3211d ago

Not so redundant that you wouldn't read it to reach that conclusion.

So thanks!

Xbox hasn't been a competitor since the XB360. Last generation and this generation Sony has been running circles around Xbox. As for Sony vs Nintendo Sony runs circles yes but I don't really see Nintendo as competition. Nintendo does their own thing and it works.

Details are important. Console sales yes. Overall games Xbox seems to be doing fairly well in that department.

LoveSpuds3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

MS were doing so well that they had to start selling their games on their main competitors system which in turn results in around 30% of each sale going to Sony as the platform holder.

I do think tjat MS' fortunes will improve now that they are actually selling games rather than giving them away for pennies on the dollar.

Something that occurs to me is that the more success MS published games have elsewhere, the more stark it will become that selling games is much more profitable than renting them. If that becomes highly noticable, I wonder what the shareholders (who ultimately run the show) will make of a service which has stagnated for years?

crazyCoconuts3d ago

PlayStation doesn't compete with third party games, they compete on consoles. They profit from third party games. If you're not comparing consoles there's no point in comparing.

drivxr4d ago

Console wars are over.

Eventually, everyone else will catch up to this fact.

attilayavuzer4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I think it's all PS fans have left at this point. Console wars were always a competition for fourth place behind Nintendo, PC and mobile. If Xbox evaporates into a hybrid virtual platform, then PS will be perennially left in last place.

Strange, I recall all those FCC documents and witness testimonies saying the exact opposite... Guess Microsoft doesn't know what it's talking about?
