Well the Wii method is working for the ps4 at the moment. All the casuals have flocked to it because of the easy cinematic type games. Press X and you win the whole game.

I'm glad Nintendo games remain challenging with good gameplay. Who knows what the NX is but I'm betting it will be best thing on the market for gamers and not sheep that follow trends.

@ moldy - Was going to upvote you but when you threw in the comment about 3rd party developers being lazy, you ruined your point. 3rd party developers skipped the Wii U not because of its uniqueness, but because the console was unable to run 8th generation games, due to its poor specs and missing features.

With MS and Sony making my current gen consoles obsolete in the next 12 or so months and new cheap low to mid-spec graphics cards, I'm left wondering what future there is for consoles?

If the experience with consoles is little more than graphics then the PC is looking better and better, particularly given the improved graphics and cheaper game options. Apart from exclusives, there'll be little reason to own a PS4 or Xbone; which can be said for Nintendo WiiU.

I think having an alternative system not so closely related to basic x86 boxed architecture may be the way for Nintendo to go. Don't get me wrong, it may be an x86 machine, but how it is packaged and interacted with by the player needs to offer a different experience.

We'll have answers in the next 12 months if enough people think the same.

I think the uniqueness may come from the detachable controllers rather than the whole hybrid thing. I'm curious to see what they've got. It would also be great to see more first person shooters using motion controls. If NX got overwatch with gyroscope controls, I'd be down for it.

I hope to god that they don't use motion controls like the Wii did, it's a deal breaker to be honest and I think a lot of people feel the same. Motion control has been done to death during the 8th gen and I think people in general are tired of that.

A normal person would realize that buying a game and playing it on the emulator is perfectly legal.

Also, on the NX isn't necessarily normal. Most people will likely play it on the Wii U, seeing how the NX doesn't look to be very much of an upgrade, and with it's rumored crazy handheld focus, many Wii U owners (a console), aren't going to be buying an NX.

You know apples and oranges. Just because NIntendo says their handheld is a console, doesn't mean I'll actually believe that it truly is one.

No, actually I want the NX to be a success. The problem is, the NX isn't anything like what they need from a console perspective, and thus I think it's going to fail big time from a console perspective.

From a handheld perspective, I think it will do well.

But I pity the fools who think they are going to get a console with more console style content than the Wii U, only to find out that most of that 'other' content is handheld type games they never wanted in the first place, and it's another WIi U, but likely with even LESS 3rd party support. Ouch.

As for what you hope for, that's petty, and completely out of touch with reality. With comments like that, you deserve seeing all the hate Nintendo is likely to get for the NX.

Why can't we be offered uniqueness and power though? Nintendo seems to be living in a parallel dimension where MS nor Sony exist yet paradoxically they are to blame, I mean, it's ok to have a portable with power comparable to the x360, but "Nintendo is right, it's just the other nasty, bad consoles that make Nintendo look bad" seems to be the implicit message over, and over and over again. They are going to burn and crash if they keep on this route, FFS, at this pace any android 5.x smartphone is going to be more powerful than the thing when it comes out, where's the revolution? clunky detachable controls? docking base!? If the rumors are true that the NX is using the Tegra chip, I hope that they go for the x2 but this is Nintendo so they will most likely go for the x1.

Even the X2 is underwhelming. If rumors are right, it still would be maybe half (when at full power, which mean in home console mode), of the Xbox 1, which is pretty crappy for 2017. Even the Tegra X2 is only comparable to last decade's GPU's.

When I look for a new product, and it's the 8th year of the decade (2017), I'm not looking to buy something that is basically last decade. I mean 2008 power was good for 2008, but not for a new product in 2017.

Meanwhile remember developers would have to make all their games scaleable as well. Or else they have to code to the lowest common denominator. Scaleable games are bit more complex to make. More complexity, means more questions and higher thresholds before developers decide to make a game, which means less games.

jmc8888: Well, if the NX is a hybrid I can live with it being less powerful then PS4 and Xbox one, that's just the nature of portable vs stationary. With that said, I still want Nintendo to go the extra mile to get as much power as possible for a portable/console hybrid, so going for the more powerful Tegra x2 would be preferable (even if it increase cost). But like I said, this is Nintendo so I doubt they will do that.

What rumours? the X2 was already shown by nividia at hotchips this week. Its 1.5 tf but when you account that Nividia flops are more than AMD flops its actually around 2tf compared to the other consoles, stronger than PS4. But like i said, Nintendo probably wont use an off the shelf part and it will be custom version of either the X1 or X2 so we have no idea what the power would be.

I know, there is no reason they can't have a normal console, that has unique aspects to it, which developers (including Nintendo itself) can utilize if they want to... but don't have to.

A console with the power to compete with Sony and MS for 3rd party AAA games (since they ARE competing no matter how much they stick their head in the sand).

Guess what Nintendo, you head may be trying to get that red ocean, but your butt is still also firmly planted in the blue ocean as well. Pretending that isn't so is idiotic and destructive.

People want those games, and if your console doesn't have them, they aren't going to be buying your console for those game. It's pretty elementary. Once they have those games, and those consoles, why do they need to buy yours? Even if somehow the desire is there, do they even have time and money to do so?

I'm not interested in a handheld. I'm interested in a console. Just because you put a hdmi port on a handheld, does not mean it's a console. You know what people were calling for years ago? A way to connect their handheld up, so they could play it on a big screen. They didn't want that so they could call it a console. They just wanted some added functionality to a handheld that made it easier to use at times. Instead, Nintendo took that idea, went full-retard (and we all know you never go full-retard) and are calling it a console.

I get it, some people want motion controls. Most don't. I have no problem with it being an option, but for it to likely now be a big part of it, that's a problem.

There's some crazy things Nintendo might have overlooked as well. If you want some sort of docking base or anything else that adds power, you are making people buy multiple guts, which as anyone knows, will end up costing more and getting you less than an all-in-one solution. So if this is the plan, it's a bad one.

Also Nintendo is partnering with Nvidia right? Well basing something on the 1060 would be some pretty nice guts for a Nintendo system, and it would use a good deal less power than AMD. I mean right now the RX480 rumored to be in Neo actually uses more power than the GTX 1080. So they could make a nice little console with lots of power, yet relatively cool and low power draw based off of Nvidia.

But no, the opening Sony and MS left with underpowered XB1 and PS4 is just going to be wasted. Instead they are going for the handheld market and trying to convince us that it really is a console, with detachable motion controls, and with a large portion of it's library being handheld type games.

No thanks Nintendo. I hope the rumors are wrong, because from a console gaming perspective, the NX doesn't sound good at all.

Honestly, I loved the NES, SNES, N64 and Gamecube controllers - each found a way to put their own unique spin on the classic controller. If the NX has a controller similar to the Wii U in that it is a controller attached to a screen then they are making the same mistake again. That configurations is the reason the system was doomed from the start and this is coming from somebody whose favorite game of 2014 was Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. If they unveil the NX and it has detachable pieces connected to a screen I will pass all together. The controller is the reason I got rid of the Wii U.

Communication and software were huge issues. I'll give you that. But they weren't the BIGGEST issue.

The biggest issue was showing people games that didn't have any wow factor. It doesn't matter how good your game is, if it doesn't come off as novel n some way it won't make many people buy your system.

The Wii U launched with New Super Mario Bros. U. A game that could have been done (other than for the HDness) on the gamecube. It had a great Mario game in Mario 3D World...that looked like every other 3D Mario game. It had a bunch of Zeldas...that were re-released versions of games we already played.

Just look at Mario Kart 8. Everyone has playedMario Kart a million times. But this one, even with its minor upgrade of anti-gravity stuff, looked diffrent from the outside. So people bought it.

This system will do better out of the gate because it's gonna have a Zelda game that has a great angle (open world) and looks fresh and fun. But that won't carry the system forever. They need new ideas. And as with my MK8 example, they don't have to reinvnt the wheel, just give it a fresh angle.

People want to buy Nintendo stuff. Just give them a little push.

So I fully expect the NX, which is a handheld, to sell that many.

But those aren't console sales, and any dev looking at 'console userbase' in order to decide whether or not they can make money on the game, better not get fooled at Nintendo's fuzzy math.

You don't want to be that company that goes out of business because you saw they sold 50 million NX's, but didn't realize only about 5 million bought it to use as an actual console, and the rest as a handheld. So when you put out your console style game, the audience willing to buy it ended up being a lot smaller then you thought.

They might be able to get some smaller devs to believe the bs, but I think EA/Activision/Bethesda/etc, etc... the big dogs will see right through that bs.

Nintendo is hoping that by blurring the lines, they can use their handheld userbase as a way to increase 3rd party support. But it's fake, and anyone with a brain can see right through this pathetic attempt to manipulate 3rd party devs.

So if I wanted to buy a NX for console use (not handheld), and you combine the handheld and console devs together so we can have access to both guess what.... I'm still not going to buy the handheld devs games.

In other words, giving me access to a bunch of games I don't want, and many won't, does not check off the list, a continuous beat of games.

You know what would? AAA 3rd party support.

Meanwhile I don't want motion controls at the forefront of it, as rumored by the detachable motion controllers. I don't care if they have them, because I know some people like them. But if they are doubling down on motion controls, it's going to turn alot of people out.

How come I'm getting this feeling they are going for an augmented reality angle with the NX? Like Pokemon Go style, but different. Handheld, with motion controls? Sounds to me like some sort of augmented reality angle. But if Pokemon Go taught me anything, it's not all that it's cracked up to be.

Regardless if it is or isn't, the simple fact that the console, if you want to use it as a console, and not a handheld.... will probably get about the same amount of 1st party games you actually might be interested in as the Wii U.

It really is looking like for the type of Nintendo games I'm looking for, if I buy an NX, I'll be buying a device where I have less software than the Wii U. That's not very encouraging.

But I have to tell them, that no amount of marketing is going to get people who don't want to do handheld gaming, to suddenly want to. No amount of marketing is going to get people who have decided they don't like motion controls ( at least as the main input) to suddenly like it again. Also no amount of marketing will change the fact that right now the casuals game on a device they already own for other purposes and have access to free games.

I'm sure the NX will be great for handheld Nintendo fans. It's just, based on the rumors, if true, it won't be for Nintendo console fans. I also have a hard time believing people used to free games, and are 'casual' are going to be buying an NX.

How about this, Nintendo: give us a powerful console that's similar to the Sony and Microsoft consoles (so that third-party publishers can easily make games for it), a normal controller (that everyone can easily use), and a steady flow of first-party games. That's how you will win, make money, and bring in more players. I don't want a gimmicky controller, I want Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Destiny, Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, etc...all on one console. Give me that and I'm sold. This unique crap that they're always feeding us is why third-party will not put games on Nintendo home systems.
