Xbox Elite Controller Review - The Best, Official-Branded Controller Ever Made

Jason says, "I’ve spent ample time with this expensive piece of hardware known as the Xbox Elite Controller. Does it deserve the name “Elite”? From what I can gather, the answer might just surprise you despite the sticker shock."

Kingthrash3603224d ago (Edited 3224d ago )

Batteries included. Lol
I've seen so many vids of xbox gamers pissed at it because it controller defects. Sticking sticks, input lagg, clicking, plus the fact that's it still needs batteries at that price...like why have to pay that much for a controller and then pat 30 bucks more for a battery pack?
......in my opinion it's not all that great for the price they want.

marquisray3224d ago (Edited 3224d ago )

Why have a controller with built in battery's that lose charge after a couple of months your statement makes no sense if it was a sony controller you would brag about the removable batteries me personally i like to change the battery packs and not have to get a new controller and i have a ps 4 and if you say that the controller do not have flaws you are a 200% fanboy lol

Allsystemgamer3224d ago

My ps4 controllers are 3 years old. Still going strong.

Plus. It takes 2 seconds to change the internal battery.

Rather do that once every few years Han every week.

UnHoly_One3224d ago

2 seconds to change a battery that requires using a screwdriver to open the controller because it isn't meant to be removed?

You must be amazing.

rainslacker3223d ago (Edited 3223d ago )

My launch day PS3 controllers still work fine. Heck, my launch day PSP batteries still last as long as when I first got the system. My Logitech mouse has held it's battery charge for about 2 weeks of constant use for the past 4 years.

Maybe you're confusing these batteries with the crap they put into cell phones which are designed to drain, so people move to upgrade their phones sooner.

All controllers have flaws. The batteries ability to be changed or not isn't one of them.

Those rechargeable batteries you buy, are the same kind of batteries used in the DS4, just in a different form factor....so basically, you're saying you're happy to be pay extra for what the DS4 offers for free. In fact, those rechargeable batteries you buy have a much lower number of recharges than the ones included in the wireless Dualshock controllers since they became wireless.

Funny though, you know MS could offer rechargeable batteries, along with extras which could be brought seperately, and still actually provide value to it's $150 controller....while helping to keep everything more environmentally friendly. I mean, would cost them $1 more, but hey, why not just charge $25 for the opportunity to have a rechargeable 1st party battery.

LexHazard793223d ago (Edited 3223d ago )

@allsystem, it doesnt take 2 secs because it takes more just to take the screws off. Also in what world is it better taking apart DS4 to swap out dead lipo or whatever. Than just remove back cover and putting couple AA or charge pack. Because that literally only takes a few seconds.

@rainslacker, when you got into gaming did you think it was gonna be cheap? Soooo how about model builders, should they be mad at Revel or Tamiya that after spending $150-$1000 on a model kit. I still have to buy paint, glue. If its RC, you gotta buy paint, body, charger, lipos, motor kit, wheels, servos, decals, I can keep going because, Ive done it endless times. It's a hobby there will be some things that might need purchasing even if you think it should be included.

It's the best controller I've ever used, hands down, no contest.

I can't help but laugh every time I see somebody complain because it uses "batteries", as if that is a negative thing.

You realize that the PS4 controller uses a battery, too, right? It's just built in, not meant to be replaced, and crappy.

I'll never understand how anyone thinks that is preferable. Get yourself a set of rechargeable AA's and a wall charger, and you'll be able to swap out and be back in the game in a couple of seconds without ever having to "plug in" to keep playing.

It's the better way to handle the battery situation without a doubt. I REALLY hope that Xbox never switches to using a built in battery.

n4rc3223d ago

If batteries are the only thing people can complain about, then I think the title is fitting.

It's the best controller to ever sit in my hands.

BossBattle3224d ago

There's no problem with the 2 I've bought. I haven't heard about any issues of the Elite controller. It does have the highest quality materials on any controller ever made. And it is the best controller ever. Now I've heard about the PS4 ds4 controller defecting with thumbsticks, poor battery life, and the the triggers getting stuck. The Elite controller is worth $150 considering Scufs are $250-$300 depending on options, and they defect all the time. Elites have a year warranty, while Scufs have 90 days. I'd buy 1 elite over 3 PS4 controllers.

DARK_WOLF3224d ago

What a load of bull💩 damage control.

The elite controller is the best controller ever made and demands respect.

You wish ps4 had such a nice quality controller.

My eneloop batteries last all week. Better than a couple of hours like other controllers...

BossBattle3224d ago

Eneloops are the best. It's good to not have to plug your controller in just to to play and charge.

rainslacker3223d ago

So why doesn't MS provide these batteries with the controller, and offer a way to recharge them with a cradle or something as well as sell extra batteries? Why go with cheapo's? Can't MS still offer rechargeable batteries, that are also removable or can be recharged while in the controller?

Or is that too much to ask and everyone is just happy making another purchase to get the most out of their rather expensive controller?

DARK_WOLF3223d ago (Edited 3223d ago )

Ah typical rainslacker. Always coming to sonys defence always giving MS slack.

Eneloop rechargeable batteries are not cheapos and they last all week. I hardly ever have to even think about my battery levels. And when i do its a 10 second swap to the set of eneloops waiting for me in the charge dock.

My xb1 controllers are 100% wireless all of the time.

But youd rather MS lock a cheap ass battery in there that dies every 3-4 hours right? And have to sit close to your tv with ur controller pluggd in charging.

Hmmmm whatever floats ur boat i guess.

fanboysmackdown3224d ago

It does use batteries too that cost less than a buck that will last for days. Way better than using a device you need to recharge all the time and runs out in the middle of a gaming session. Typical idiotic fanboy comment and it's obvious you have never used the Elite yourself and you sound like the troll that you make yourself out to be.

rainslacker3223d ago (Edited 3223d ago )

So basically....you have to spend a buck for every few days of gaming because MS doesn't provide rechargeable batteries in it's controller? Can't those removable batteries also be rechargeable?

Yeah, way better to keep putting all those toxic chemicals into landfills from all those disposable batteries, or spend $10-20 for some decent rechargeable and a charging cradle on top of the controller purchase....or I guess one could spend $25 for the MS branded rechargeable battery....although I'm unsure if that's compatible with the Elite.

The running out in the middle of a gaming session is way overstated IMO.

LexHazard793223d ago

@ rainslacker,

We get it dude, you hate the Elite controller.

Now the Xbox controller is causing Earths destruction, Lol.

Wth, smh!

DARK_WOLF3223d ago

Smfh rainslacker you getting pretty pathetic now.

Also how could you not know if the xb1 battery kit is compatible with the elite or not?

Thats really showing your level of ignorance towards xbox right there because thats a BASIC thing to know.

Majister-Ludi3224d ago (Edited 3224d ago )

Yea king thrash I'm gonna trust you to be rational about anything related to Microsoft get out of here. As someone who has played everything from ps controllers, xbox, razer, the elite is hands down the best feeling controller. It costs a premium but I've had mine since release with zero problems, so no regrets.

Mystogan3224d ago

lol, "your opinion".

Only people ive seen complaining about batteries are the jealous PSfanboys. Removable batteries always beat internal. There's no debate. PS4 controller barely lasts 3 hours with constant use and then you have to wire it up again to charge. While the Xbox one controllers last 2 days!

LexHazard793223d ago (Edited 3223d ago )

I paid $17.99 for one of those energizer wall chargers came with a pr of 2500 mah batteries. I basically game all week on one charge. I know you like to troll but the option to use whatever I like instead of that stupid embedded 1000 mah battery in the DS4. It should just came wired because its always connected to my PS4. Lol..

And I think you were better off saying its overpriced. You cant say its not that great if you don't have one or tried one.

I really like the Xbox 360 controller, I have not liked any of the Xbox One variations including the elite. Something about the design feels clunky and a bit cumbersome, especially that ridiculous top section which is a lot of empty real estate.

DARK_WOLF3224d ago

Nice comment history "Cough" hater

BossBattle3224d ago

I tried going back to the 360 controller and now the analog stick feels too loose.

Majister-Ludi3224d ago

1000 bucks says you don't have one a d never even touched one.

LexHazard793223d ago (Edited 3223d ago )

Empty real estate? Wait 2 triggers, 2 bumpers. Oh Im sorry did it need a touch pad and a light bulb? Lol

maybelovehate3224d ago

I definitely love mine. I don't use the paddles or custom thumbs in most games but just the feel alone is worth the price if you have extended gaming sessions. Not a necessity but definitely a luxury worth investing in.

slate913224d ago

I will never go back to using a standard controller. Being able to jump in an online shooter while continuing to aim is a game changer. Not to mention the other unassigned paddles you have to use. Taller sticks allow for more precise aiming. Even the Dpad you can change out. Greatest of all time.

FreddyFazbear3224d ago

The article's title is true... For xbox fans that is. Controller with assymetrical joyticks. Right. I didnt know human hands are assymetric.

Mystogan3224d ago (Edited 3224d ago )

I like the asymmetrical sticks. My thumbs bump into each other with PScontrollers. I hated that. When I first held an Xbox (original S) controller, It felt so natural and comfortable. No more carpal tunnel.

MatrixxGT3224d ago

For intense games I feel the Xbox style is much more comfortable. The DS4 is miles better than any before it but if I could use the Xbox controller on PS4 I would.
Problem is controllers are most subjective part of a console. No two sets of hands are the same.

FreddyFazbear3223d ago

Funny i have big hands but my thumbs dont bump into each other. The problem here is controllers are a very subjective topic thats why i said the title is true for xbox fans. I held an xbox 360 controller and played with my cousin NBA 2K16. My complaint is the controller feels so bulky and uncomfortable that i have difficulty moving unlike DS3 and DS4 its like second nature to me. If ever there is a competition of cross play of all games like tekken, streer fighter, speed runs i would challenge an xbox player to let them know how awesome Dualshock is. From what i heard the EVO champion this year is even using a dualshock 3. Can remember if tekken or street fighter. Carpal tunnel syndrome huh? Who told you that doctor google?

Immorals3224d ago

Don't know about you but my thumbs naturally sit upwards of the dualshock thumbsticks!

FreddyFazbear3223d ago

Controllers are a very subjective topic bro. Thats why i said the headline is true for xbox fans but not for everyone else. Some would even say the gamecube cobtroller is the best. I tried a 360 controller with no bias. I played NBA 2K16 and it feels so bulky to me and uncomfortable even if i have big hands. Unlike DS4/DS3 feels natural to me like breathing air. Bottomline if your so used to something it becomes comfortable to you.

The Xbox Elite Series 2 is the best controller around and is cheaper than ever.

With a $40 saving you can still pick up the Xbox Wireless Adapter with it and it'll still cost less than full price.

FlavorLav011313d ago

My right bumper broker on my Xbox elite controller after only a year. Also, dualsense controller says hello.

porkChop1313d ago

They're talking from a PC gaming perspective.

Rhythmattic1313d ago (Edited 1313d ago )

You mean MS Perspective? Doesn't Dulasense work say with Steam "PC' Games? Albeit , not every game supports its features, like the features this doesn't have either?

porkChop1313d ago (Edited 1313d ago )

No, not from MS' perspective. The Dualsense's unique features only work with 6 games on PC. One of those doesn't support the haptics. Even then, the controller only works with a beta driver from Steam. You can't configure the controller unless you're in Big Picture mode. It doesn't have proper support on PC because Sony doesn't offer any drivers.

It's not a bad controller at all. But on PC it's just a standard controller for 99.99% of games. But unlike other controllers it's just far too limited on PC for it to really be the "best" PC controller. I'm not saying the Elite is, either. But at least with the Elite you just connect it and it works. No fiddling with anything, just play the game.

Teflon021313d ago

Pork, you know the only reason Sony controls don't have better support is because MS doesn't want it to. PS4 controls had drivers from the jump, but MS wants to block DS use on MS titles even if they natively support it like cuphead and PSO2 which when using the steam version and turning off the steam control features and letting it run raw it picks up and runs proper.

That's pretty garbage. But even so over time more PC games will have the features.

porkChop1313d ago

Windows is an open platform. Sony can release proper XInput drivers any time they want. They choose not to. That has nothing to do with MS.

iplay1up21313d ago

Also, competitive gaming. Dualsense is to make games more Immersive which is awesome, The elite is more for competitive gaming.

Rhythmattic1312d ago (Edited 1312d ago )

" doesn't have proper support on PC because Sony doesn't offer any drivers. "
Just like MS Games don't properly support Linux? MS could do games without DX, you know, this open standards and platforms you speak of, but I guess, what you say is true....
Its all about taking the PC tag.

porkChop1312d ago

Linux and driver support aren't the same thing. And I said open platform, not open standard. Again, not the same thing. But sure, go off on how MS supporting an OS like 1% of gamers use is the same as a simple driver.

My DualSense had stick drift. I’d say no controller is without issues.

ColtPSSX1313d ago

I don’t understand how you guys play games. I have never had a stick drift ever. PS2, Xbox, PS3, 360, PS4, xone, PS5, Xbox series, switch, wii.
Not once, and I go hard when I play also.

Jin_Sakai1313d ago

“I don’t understand how you guys play games. I have never had a stick drift ever.“

Honestly the DualSense is the first controller I’ve ever had stick drift on. I’ve even had multiple Switch consoles with no drift.

FlavorLav011313d ago

True, but also Dual sense isn’t an “elite” controller sold at near $200 either

ColtPSSX1313d ago

I have 2 dual sense and still pretty good. Must be bad luck.

Orbilator1313d ago (Edited 1313d ago )

Same here stick drift is a mystery to me.

Elite series 2 is a great co troller but it's a lot of cash, can't believe there isn't better joypads on PC that are better than the elite?. So many to chose I'm sure it's just preference over features

AuraAbjure1313d ago

@ Colt, I left my contorller upside down with a jacket on top for a couple days. Hello stick drift.

Sorry but the Dualsense is nothing compared to the elite controller 2. My Dualsense dies every single day after a few hours of play.

iplay1up21313d ago

Dualsense isn't going to give you a competitive edge. The Elite is designed for competitive gaming, and not immersion.

SyntheticForm1313d ago

Two of my DualSense controllers have drifted and I've already bought a third.

Not shitting on the DualSense - I love it - but I'm kinda chaffed over the high potential for this controller to become drift-afflicted so quickly.

343_Guilty_Spark1312d ago

Dual sense is a great casual controller and adds a layer of immersion not seen in other controllers... . But for shooters and more competitive games tried and true is a little better.

FlavorLav011312d ago

Still subjective I think given the price comparison

+ Show (5) more repliesLast reply 1312d ago
porkChop1313d ago

That's still about $175-$180 CAD. I'm sure it's a really great controller but I can't justify spending that much on it.

Jin_Sakai1313d ago (Edited 1313d ago )

Agreed. I just couldn’t justify spending that much on a controller no matter how great it is.

ABizzel11313d ago

They're $120 at a local store here, and 25% off that price making them $90 for the holiday here.

porkChop1313d ago

That's actually not a bad price.

alb18991313d ago (Edited 1313d ago )

I bought one and is worth it men. It is so customizeble. And you can evecharge it inside the box plus the battery last like forever. And how it feels....I mean, if play videogames is your thing you gave to invest in a good control and a nice monitor or tv....and headphones.

porkChop1313d ago

I believe it's great. But in Canada it retails for over $200. Even with a decent sale it's just too much money for me. It costs more than most high end mechanical keyboards, and I don't even buy those because of how expensive they are. I only have one of those keyboards because my brother switched to a different one and let me use it.

1313d ago
Amplitude1312d ago (Edited 1312d ago )

The fact that it's that price and DOESN'T have the most basic of features like gyro is what drives me absolutely insane. I'd love a good pro XBox style controller with gyro and a touch pad i can use as a mouse.
Still constantly looking. PS5 controller works but Bluetooth is wonky at times so i just use the XBox controller for everything and then switch to the PS5 controller for shooters so i can enable gyro to emulate a mouse when i hold L2 in Steam controller config. Would love the Elite in order to use the back paddles as separate buttons in PC games which to my knowledge even the SCUF PS4 controller cant do in Steam

Just add gyro to this bs microsoft its 2021 lol
