Those are some pretty impressive additions/changes

Genuine-User3228d ago (Edited 3228d ago )

Absolutely. They've pretty much included all the important features except ext hdd support.

YinYangGaming3228d ago

Yep and since a lot of these are fan requested features I have no doubt other highly requested features like ext HDD support isn't far behind now either

Saigon3228d ago

The features in this update, is more on the list of items I wasn't expecting. Good job Sony for actually going after some if not most of user requested features.

uth113228d ago

@moldybread Username changes is more a network feature than a firmware feature

freshslicepizza3228d ago

@ufh11,

They are related to one another. Perhaps it is a limitation to the service itself as to why they cannot do it.

Sparta073228d ago

I think the eternal hard drive support will come soon. Don't think they are in a rush for that upgrade. from day one we were able to swap the internal hard drive.

uptownsoul3228d ago Show
inmusicutrust3228d ago

@moldybread

They are working on user name changes but having difficulties . Because the network wasn't build with that in mind things like trophies are proving to be tricky in regards to the issue. Everything is connected to your username and the network doesn't recognize a simple name change and still associate everything to the account. Supposedly that's the issue at least.

daynnight3653228d ago

Name change says hi....I know it's an old one

Slappy McGee3228d ago

As much as I would love to add an external 2tb hdd to my PS4 to go along with the 2tb internal I have to wonder where I would plug it into the system. The only usb ports are in the front. It would look bad having a cable stretched across the front of the console. Maybe the aux port on the back could be used? I certainly hope so.

TWB3228d ago

I swear that they have improved ext HDD/USB storage device support quietly. I occasionally transfer my galleries to a 500Gb USB 2 HDD, and at the beginning of PS4 it sometimes would simply refuse the drive constantly, while at times it would accept it flawlessly even some times in a row. Mixed experiences, sometimes it would work after a couple of retries.

Now since the couple of last updates, I dont think that my PS4 has refused the drive even once.

For starters, I would be happy with a feature to record video straight to the external HDD, with the ability to upload gameplay videos from that external storage.

DarXyde3228d ago

Moldybread,

While I don't believe your comment should be considered "inappropriate", I've witnessed little else from you beyond criticism and skepticism of just about everything Sony is doing with these updates (or, more generally, PlayStation itself). It's generally accompanied by what feels like some slight, insincere compliment followed by a sizable "but...". Give it a rest, mate.

Yes, it's missing those features. No denying that. But hey, it does support USB and cloud saves for backing up. It's apparent they're listening. What I'm saying is, no, PS4 is not perfect. It's still got some shortcomings worth addressing. But jeez, can't you be positive about them adding folders and overhauling the UI a bit? I'd rather they take their time to ensure my console doesn't become a paperweight from a shoddy update.

Microsoft not long ago added custom soundtracks and Nintendo still needs to address some glaring issues with Wii U's online titles.

How about you dial down the negativity? This update looks great. There's no need to go all glass-half-empty. It's considerable progress regardless.

i will give it a rest once i see the same people who continue to make even more negative and more disingenuopus comments within the xbox articles. all while miraculously getting away with it.

"Yes, it's missing those features. No denying that. But hey, it does support USB and cloud saves for backing up. It's apparent they're listening. What I'm saying is, no, PS4 is not perfect. i've said it before and i will say it again, sony has the best console product out there right now. it has gotten A LOT better. put it this way, i refuse to even go into the playstation store on my p3, that's how bad it is. it is so slow i can't handle it and it is NOT my connection.

"Microsoft not long ago added custom soundtracks and Nintendo still needs to address some glaring issues with Wii U's online titles."

microsoft did indeed remove some features that were on the xbox 360. their early os was clunky and terrible on the xbox one but from what i hear it has come a long ways. i don't own an xbox one no matter how many think i am some xbox fanboy. i guess that is the handbook response to anyone who criticizes sony, they must be a total xbox fan only then.

"How about you dial down the negativity? This update looks great. There's no need to go all glass-half-empty. It's considerable progress regardless."

like i said, when we see the xbox articles clear of the same people who make far more negative commenst then i do then sure, i will.

DarXyde3227d ago

Moldybread,

You'll stop when you stop seeing it on Xbox articles? In other words you don't mind being part of the problem. That's actually pretty petty and immature.

About PS3's store, yeah, it's pretty slow...But why are we talking about Sony's last generation console now?

Criticizing Sony doesn't give you the label of Xbox fanboy. I criticize Sony where it's appropriate myself and don't receive labels like that. You certainly come off as an anti Sony fanboy, I'll say that.

My advice to you is to stop being part of a problem and justifying your behavior by essentially saying, "but they started it". It's childish. The shoe was on the other foot last generation, but this does not need to turn into a pissing match because it has no chance of ending that way.

Bottom line, Sony is making some very positive changes. No amount of spinning is going to undermine that.

freshslicepizza3227d ago

@DarXyde

we are ALL part of the problem because it has never gone away.

"About PS3's store, yeah, it's pretty slow...But why are we talking about Sony's last generation console now?"

because i only have a ps3 and used it as an exaple of how much better sony has done with the ps4.

"Criticizing Sony doesn't give you the label of Xbox fanboy. I criticize Sony where it's appropriate myself and don't receive labels like that. You certainly come off as an anti Sony fanboy, I'll say that."

anti fanboy i can live with but i am by no means anti-sony. far from it. they have basically saved gaming in my opinion because nintendo at the time was a real dictator and did not work well with third party publishers, in fact they still don't. sega was also running their business to the ground and sony came in at the right time with a new vision.

"My advice to you is to stop being part of a problem and justifying your behavior by essentially saying, "but they started it". It's childish. The shoe was on the other foot last generation, but this does not need to turn into a pissing match because it has no chance of ending that way."

i'm trying to prove a point about how lopsided things really are.

"Bottom line, Sony is making some very positive changes. No amount of spinning is going to undermine that.
Agree 3Disagree"

yes and no. yes they are still making positivbe changes but they still have issues that need ironing out. i give them a b grade.

DarXyde3226d ago

Moldybread,

No. We're not all part of the problem. I don't do what you do. Plenty of people don't do what you do. Plenty of people do, but plenty of people don't. You're a cynic, it's that simple.

Using PS3 as an example of how much better they're doing with PS4...but you only own a PS3. How do these changes happening affect you right now? I'm not saying you can't have an opinion, but it seems to me that you just wanted to be vocal for the sake of rustling some jimmies. You're not even really discussing how far Sony came with the PS4. If anything, you're ridiculing them for what they have yet to accomplish.

Proving a point at how lopsided things are, yet you mention nothing about doing so until you're questioned. I highly doubt you're doing it to bring the other side's nonsense to attention. But I must ask, how does that invalidate what I've stated? That is, in what way am I wrong in saying that, if true, your actions are childish? That still seems to hold. Taking it upon yourself to"expose hypocrisy" without giving much reasoning is...oh, what's it called...trolling? I think so.

"Yes and no"? No, it's a resounding yes. Yes, Sony is doing awesome things with the PS4. It's only getting better. As I've stated, it's not perfect, so saying it needs to iron out some issues adds nothing new to this discourse. And frankly, if you really don't own a PS4, your assessment of these updates with a B grade is pretty dismissive. Not saying they're better or worse, but I am saying it doesn't really matter coming from you right now.

You're probably going to say something along the lines of, "but I've played PS4 extensively". That's nice, but you don't own one and your personal experiences aren't being hindered comparably to that of an owner. So tell me exactly: What would you like Sony to do? Specifically, tell me everything you want them to add. So far, I see external HDD support and change of username. Bear in mind the update will include more features which may address your concerns. But please, tell me exactly what Sony should do with PS4.

DigitalRaptor3226d ago (Edited 3226d ago )

@ mb

"they are still ignoring some of the most requested though, such as the ability to change your username. folders is a nice surprise and yes, they should try and get external hard drive support."

Ignoring? Who is ignoring what? What is the requirement of response exactly? As a famous poet once said: "you can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time." - you seem to be attempting to propose that it's feasible for us to expect that everything should arrive at once.
---------

"i will give it a rest once i see the same people who continue to make even more negative and more disingenuopus comments within the xbox articles. all while miraculously getting away with it."

Rich that. You purposefully ignore Xbox fans who make comments that are just as questionable as anything the ones you choose to criticize are saying, all the while making its your purpose on this site to take down the Sony fans sharing their opinions - even if their comment is not led by anything connected to console wars (as has happened with me several times). That is disingenuous. You make things up about me and the platforms I like and game on, to make you feel like you're validated, which is disingenuous. Just like certain Xbox folks who do the same, pretend to be level-headed gamers whilst being purposefully deceitful and disingenuous (people that I've seen you defend despite my proof) to further an agenda. You don't want to let Sony fans saying "bad" yet truthful stuff about Microsoft and Xbox get away with it, but you have a problem with other Xbox fans being nailed on their BS by the ones you focus on to attack and serve to discredit. That is both an agenda, and a double standard. Your double standards cannot be rejected. You do lean far more towards questioning Sony for their actions as though it's a requirement, and all the while you staunchly defend Microsoft and Xbox from any levels of criticism that would be deemed acceptable in any healthy community, whilst treating it as unacceptable. Remove the act.
----------

"They are related to one another. Perhaps it is a limitation to the service itself as to why they cannot do it."

Not by much other than you can download a patch from the network that updates your PS4 with offline (and online) features. It's rumoured that name changes are an absolute nightmare because of the PSN's database infrastructure which has the usernames saved as primary keys from the early days when PSN was this barebones service made for PS3's launch. I'd like for them to come out and be more clear about the story behind that, but it's not how things work.
---------

@ DarXyde

Your latest comment has it nailed. Even when proven wrong, he won't accept or apologise. He wants to continue a grudge against certain Sony fans and their comments that he fails to balance out with Xbox fans doing exactly the same thing or worse, and have been doing for years. So much for taking a charge against the "console war" by only focusing on one side. ;)

Yep, they might even include ext hdd support in the final release.

From the blog:

Nown ppl can stop b*tching about folders lol.

BigLurch3228d ago

Hasn't taken Sony long either.

TrollsBringer3227d ago

Sony could've easily added these features months ago, but why do everything from one big update? People would get mad by the time there are no changes to their console. So Sony keeps adding stuff little by little to make their console "interesting".

Muzikguy3227d ago

It's about time! Many of these have been requested all along

Rather impressed they decided to further improve on the share functionality, it was very easy to use and feasible, at least compared to its other consoles counterpart.

MasterCornholio3228d ago

I really like how they feature won't take up the whole screen when you select it.

3228d ago
curtis923228d ago (Edited 3228d ago )

Easier to trim clips, yes, but Xbox One beats PS4 in regards to quickly sharing clips. Double tap Xbox button > hit X > 30 second clip now shared to your feed. Not to mention it's now viewable right from the xbox app on your phone. I don't know about everyone else but after I've manually gone in and shared a clip on PS4, it takes at least an hour to show up in the feed and unless i share it to facebook or youtube, there's no easy way to show someone a clip on my phone or outside of my house.

moegooner883228d ago (Edited 3228d ago )

I am generally speaking, share is meant to display your content on social media, not limit it to the console manufacturer developed/licensed apps/ecosystem. Sharing a single screenshot alone on say Twitter from Xb1 is a pain. The fact that till now, nothing has been done to improve this is laughable. Also you can also press the share button twice on PS4 to control video recording then press X to choose whatever video sharing platform you want to share to. Highly efficient, on the other hand you can't do this on XB1 feasibily. That's what I am referring to.

iNathan3228d ago

Wow it´s official, if this wasn't on Ps Blog i would have said it was just another wishful list from some fan.

This is what i call a UPDATE!

ninsigma3228d ago

Pretty cool stuff being included. I hope that in the quick menu, it's lessened the amount of menus I have to go through to turn off the DS4. Glad about viewing trophies offline. It was nonsensical to have it the other way. I never really complained about not having folders but awesome that they got it in there for those that need/want it!

dantesparda3228d ago

Just in case you didnt know (but im sure you do, cuz i also know what you mean about it taking to many steps through the quick menu), you do know you can just hold the PS button down for 10 secs to shut off the controller right?

ninsigma3228d ago

Not until very recently tbh (I should have though). It's the one thing I'm really jealous of on the xbone UI - just hold the xbone button for a sec then select controller off. Really quick and intuitive. Would like something like that.

Majin-vegeta3228d ago

Just two things on my end.
EXT.HDD support and ability to directly reply to certain comments and post videos ^_^

I hope it's a remake of the 1st game. But it's probably just the PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2

I hope a PS5 upgrade launches on the same day as announcement & it costs no more than $10. I already bought the Ultimate Edition once, they got good money from me.

I stopped playing completely 2 years ago until they did 60fps. I really didn't expect it would take this long & I didn't want to start completely over on PC.

My wish is that its optimized for current gen machines, with some sort of story expansion. Undead nightmare 2! My 2nd wish is that it just shadow drops on the day of the announcement!.
