It's a better idea than F2P imo.

More likely PS+ since PlayStation had a big marketing campaign for the game.

Only issue here is that Sony had Metacritic score limits for the major PS+ games (I think it was 80 and up). Though, they could break that and do what they want.

Even drunk I wouldn't buy this game but for free I'd DL it ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Well, you could download the MMORPG Neverwinter for free but be prepared for a bit of grinding although IMHO it really is not that boring since some of the quests are quite interesting. If anything the game is a little too easy. although exploring an area two or three levels above you is a sure way of dying.

I tried jumping back in because of the new characters but you have to earn them with in-game currency just like a F2P game and just unlike Overwatch. I don't want another Overwatch clone but Battleborn is worse than it in almost every way. F2P will help with player base because it's small at the moment

ScreenGurus2851d ago

I think it'll bring players back - but how long would they stick around before heading back to Overwatch? I feel Overwatch has stolen its mojo and every step from the decision to charge for BB has ultimately just harmed it.

But that's the interesting thing I guess. We don't know what effect it would have. I'd love to see them do it just to give us a showcase of the long term effects of F2P.

What you want however and what you get are two different things.

As a gamer you either do as you are told or you vote with your wallet.

What gamers don't get however is a say.

You voted with your wallet but you don't always get what you want.

Besides it baffles me why they put overwatch and battleborn in the same bag, they are two very different beasts.

This game suffered due to expectations. People thought that they were getting a new IP with a familiar gameplay style like Borderlands. Instead, they got a the humor and writing of Borderlands wrapped in a shooter that is more MOBA and less RPG. Combine that with a similar game being launched at the same time and you have a recipe for disaster. The hero, arena shooter is kind of new to consoles. So Overwatch, being more traditional as a shooter, succeeded. All that said, Battleborn is not a horrible game IF you play it on it's own merits. It's not Overwatch. It's more Smite with a campaign and a twist of Borderlands charm. Being a hybrid of MOBA and arena shooter could be an issue. Those that want the arena shooter might be turned off by the MOBA-like PvP. Those that want a MOBA will realize that it needs some balance to become a great one.

It at least deserved them moving it to a solo-able option post server shut-down, IMHO.

Agreed, that would have been the fair and decent thing to do.

Battleborn is Dead - The Need for Game Preservation in the Next Generation

William writes: "Battleborn was not the game I wanted it to be, it probably wasn't the game a number of you reading wanted it to be. But what it undeniably was was a game that a team of hundreds of people poured their hearts and souls into."

Game preservation is important.
Single-player campaign should always be offline. So that some part(s) of a certain game still lives through and can be enjoyed later.

moriarty18891209d ago

Always Online games will always end up like this at some point. Offline SP campaign should ALWAYS be included.

Thinking that games ( and in particular this one ) will forever be lost, it makes me sad.

One of the funnier game i played with my friends. I like that one of the reason it failed is that it had many reviews like the one you did; criticizing the gameplay because it's 'too complex': because it had a skill tree and because there was different classes... My personal analysis of its failure is beacause of the Blizzard PR team: they saw a threat in it , and decided to kill it by paying professional reviews and counting on their fanboys to bash it and create a fake 'comparaison war' with it. The saddest thing is that this game will disappear forever. It casts, as others in the same situtation, a dark shadow on the future of video gaming. Hopefully there are and still will be 'pirates' to save and archive these for the future generations, that i hope will someday realize that consumerism is not the only solution.
