We Happy Few Is Nothing Like Bioshock, Avoid Disappointment

Pixelgate writes:

''We happy Few has seemingly got many people confused. When ever you see a gameplay video or Early Access lets play, you’ll be sure to see someone mention Bioshock. The unfortunate thing, at least for them, is We Happy Few has little to no shared Bioshock vibes.''

The devs have also stated that BioShock wasn't even an inspiration for the game.

PixelGateUk3241d ago

and yet people, including sites, keep linking the two. It's so weird

Sciurus_vulgaris3241d ago

I see art-styles similarities between We Happy Few and Bioschock (as well as Dishonored); nothing else screams strongly alike though.

They do share some devs don't they? I thought I had read that some of Corruption is made up of former Irrational devs.

I think what really has people making that connection though is the E3 demo...that section was markedly more Bioshock-like, all the way down to the button prompts, but it is in no way really indicative of the core gameplay & was only a playable prologue, it was weird for the devs to lead with that...kinda seems like they are leaning into that Bioshock connection in order to get eyes on the game, but it's a little disingenuous to lead w/ something like that to me. The final game may be great, I haven't played it yet & survival type games aren't typically my bag, but the marketing is just a little off. Good work informing folks though, people are going to be disappointed when they expect one thing & end up w/ another, even if that wasn't the devs intentions (although it kinda seems like it was to me)

I don't know why some gamers have this need to compare games to one another, specifically with basing their enjoyment of a game on whether its like another game. I know we all have our favorites but I believe you should really judge a game on its own merits (or lack of). I think this is a trend many game reviewers are also guilty of.

BongSmack3240d ago

I think I know why: It's an easy way to describe something to someone who hasn't experienced it.

Agreed. I've never heard this team EVER state this was suppose to be like anything BIoshock. Many in the media kept painting that picture, not the team.

Not me. Very disappointed.

wheresmymonkey3240d ago

a creepy first person adventure made with the unreal engine, set in a dystopian alt 1960s setting in which the denizens of a society are addicted to a made up drug ( not Cake) ... Am i talking about Bioshock or We Happy Few?

Hoffmann3240d ago

I predict a lot of 6/10 scores.

Where are the reviews anyway? The game is out since days already.

Kinda reminds me of miasmata also with how the navigation works. Not to miasmata's extent but definitely in the same vein

It's 10 years too late for a BioShock film. The world of Rapture would have been perfect for a film. It's actually a good candidate for proper utilization of 3D, for increased depth rather than bullshit popping out of the screen. It could really show off the underwater city that way. But BioShock as a brand is so irrelevant these days that a film just doesn't make sense. Especially considering it would need a big budget and top notch effects to really take advantage of the IP.

gold_drake322d ago

i agree on the bigger budget. all the cgi they'd need for the background.

but i think it would work better as a show. a movie would be too short to establish the story

TheNamelessOne322d ago

Netflix greenlights anything, so that shows me very little faith in the project. Enough to just crap something out as they're, more and more, known to do.

Knightofelemia322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

I'll laugh if it turns out to be better then the Borderlands movie
