I currently have this as the next game coming for me from Gamefly.

It'll be worth it to play it for a while and name creatures I find as offensive as possible and then send it back when I'm bored.

I don't think the NPC species are procedural. They are a part of the existing lore. The animals on planets and the plants are. Even the ships have aspects of procedural generation.
