Cliff Bleszinski On Xbox One Scorpio: Microsoft Are Trying To Emulate The Smartphone Model

Unlike the Xbox One, the Scorpio will not be some misguided attempt at redefining UI, or being a living room media box.

With smartphone Unsubsidized prices of $700-$800 too. Good luck selling this thing. Neo will be $450 and will be out before Scorpio. DOA

Lennoxb633251d ago (Edited 3251d ago )

If you think the Scorpio is going to be $700-$800, then you don't even have enough knowledge to speak on the topic.

BiggerBoss3250d ago

How much will it be? (Since you clearly know for sure)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA3249d ago

But the xbox one s is the same price as the xbone launched and i bet your one jumping all over it. For what 4k vid output and ao called hdr that hasnt been proven? You will find if a slim is costing the same price as the xbone released then you better believe the scorpio will more then likely be that price

Eonjay3249d ago

Hey guess what? Everyone is right/wrong until there is actual facts to draw from. Reminds me of the PSVR pricegate where every day a new leaked price was 'confirmed'... so:

Neo will be 399
Scorpio will be 599

Prove me wrong.

seanpitt233251d ago

Scorpio will be $499 for the Base 2Tb model and $599 for the 4Tb special
edition.

Kleptic3249d ago

how so? I don't care about these devices in any sense...but his price points are hard to counter with anything factual...

I'm looking at scorpio as a win10 game store version of the surface series...MS used the surface pro devices to directly fight Apple's ipad line...and facking destroyed ipad's in like a year...as productivity tablets they're unmatched...and they're losing money as they price them so low they don't cover the marketing behind them....but they've almost pushed ipads, and android tablets out of the market entirely (but far from chromebooks, which are now android tablets automatically...and things got really weird this summer, but w/e)...

There is little doubt they'll do something similar with scorpio...They'll price it at something acceptable because it's not a 'device', its a product required for a service (win 10 and everything gaming related to it)...

Do people really think they're going to try to beat Sony by pushing out some crazy high priced console...when the only time they ever competed with Sony was when Sony pushed out a crazy high priced console? They're not that dumb...and they've got the financial backing to slide scorpio out a lot lower than many think. $700+ is laughable imo...I'd be blown away if the base version of the scorpio doesn't land at Xbox One launch prices, which i'd guess will be $50 to $100 more than 'neo'...

WiiU-Dude3249d ago

I'm not disagreeing with this, but Microsoft WILL follow Sony's pricing with NEO. It will not cost more if they have to take a loss.

Christopher3251d ago

All the people above me must have some very good crystal balls.

gangsta_red3251d ago

I truly believe the Scorpio will be $500 for the base model and 600 dollars for the premium model, which is still expensive to console gamers imo. And it won't even have *Scorpio exclusive games* you'll be able to play every Microsoft new game on your Xbox one and PC

Goldby3250d ago

If the develipers choose to. PLay anywhere isnt happening to all games

ShadowKnight3250d ago (Edited 3250d ago )

@Goldby I can almost guarantee every Microsoft game will be on Windows 10. Microsoft is trying to make more profit and it makes sense for them to put it on PC and Xbox One. If the developers wants to make more money they will put it on 360 and PC and every Windows 10 platform they can.

ONESHOTV23250d ago (Edited 3250d ago )

ShadowKnight----$500 dollars expensive ? i'm paying 2.5x that for my PC parts and i have never complained once about the price becuase i know what i'm getting when i invest my money into it same thing can be said about the xone scorpio you are investing money into good hardware so why complain if things turn out the way MS plans then Xone will be the stronger console of the three. so no i dont think 500$ is too much and if it is get a job or stop complaining about it becuase no one is going to give it to you for free unless you are a child. (EDIT) ah sorry shadow it wasnt aimed directly at you so dont take it personal i was saying in general

ShadowKnight3250d ago (Edited 3250d ago )

@OneShot huh? I'm not complaining I'm not even going to get a Scorpio because I have a PC. I was referring to most console gamers thinks that $500 is too much for a console. I remember when the PS3 was expensive at $499 and $599 and console gamers was complaining about the price until Sony made it more affordable. I invest my money on a great gpu already and just waiting for the games to come out from Microsoft.

Watch the egg when all of a sudden the Scorpio comes out like a cell phone and it's super cheap but you need to have Live for 2 years. Like a cell phone plan. Ha ha. Would sell tons.

BiggerBoss3250d ago (Edited 3250d ago )

Live is only $60 a year. So $120 for your two year plan. Not gonna happen. MS wouldn't make much money. Cell phone plans charge over 60 a MONTH.

ABizzel13250d ago

@C02

The only way that would every remotely work is if they force you to pay $10/mo for Live rather than the $60 annual subscription. And even then it'll still likely be $299 for the console.

Sony is pretty much doing the same thing. Releasing the PS4 Neo & PSVR this year and then most likely a more powerful PS4 Slim next year. How will this fly with consumers? If Microsoft does offer an upgrade trade-in for the original XBox One, then that will make a big difference for gamers interested in the Scorpio. Microsoft will have to eat some of the cost on the Scorpio though. We know it will probably cost them $500-$650 to make and if they want to sell it for $500 or less, they will definitely lose money for the first year.

Jaw1love3250d ago

He seriously needs to worry more about his game and stop talking shit about the rest of the industry. I've been playing the Lawbreakers alpha for a couple days and it suuuucks. Yeah it's just an Alpha but it feels like the core gameplay is just bad. Trying to meld a hero shooter like Overwatch with fast paced arena multiplayer doesn't feel good at all

Kleptic3249d ago (Edited 3249d ago )

he wasn't 'talking shit' about anything...

Gaming communities have gotten so touchy about their precious toys it's reaching a breaking point, i think...

Consoles are expected to last like a decade...that is dumb...it's been dumb for over a decade...and continues to be dumb. All he was saying was that MS w/ scorpio is moving towards a smartphone like system in terms of it being a boat for a service...not a closed product that becomes obsolete way sooner than a buyer would prefer...

Would anyone ever upgrade a smartphone every 2 or so years if the new phone used a completely different closed OS...completely different apps...and completely different services?...no...that is the context of this...he's not saying MS is just trying to sell you stuff more often...

The service is windows 10's game store...The idea is that you'll buy scorpio for an evolving software suite that will grow and flourish...the device may get tired and old, but there will be a newer one available sooner rather than later that can still use all the games (apps) you bought before...you're stuff will all be in familiar places...the idea of 'starting over' will no longer be relevant...etc.

that's not 'talking shit'...he's just stating a very obvious description of what MS CONFIRMED to be doing last month... And the fact that MS fanatics are so pushy about backwards compatability with the Xbox One SHOWS that MS is on the right track...imagine a platform service where when you bought a game (again...an app)...and you just...had it...and it worked on all the newer platform devices you bought later on...? crazy right? You could say that would almost be like...a smartphone...We're able to use apps we purchased in 2009 on phones multiple generations newer...no selected BC, no partial emulation, no BS at all...you buy something, you have it, and it'll grow with the overall suite you've invested in...THAT is the better way, and exactly what this tired console model needs...

sangoku_d3250d ago

I hope it's the Nokia model

_LarZen_3250d ago

Even vacum cleaners gets updated and better faster then a console. So this is a good thing Microsoft and Sony are doing. Consoles cant be like they were in the 80's with long locked hardware profiles. It worked then. Not so much today.

fanboysmackdown3250d ago

I agree LarZen. Who says we have to be locked to the old ways of thinking. Onward and upwards, always innovating.

mcstorm3249d ago

Your spot on. Technology is different now. Also having a console upgrade every 3 years is not to bad as long as they continue to be forward and backwards compatible. If you think about it ms could even offer a base model of a console with a small hdd or no hdd in them to as you could move for external hdd from one console to another and all your games on it.
As long as the xbox one gets support for at least 5 years with all games I see this working. Its also a way to push us towards cloud gaming to as the next step.

343_Guilty_Spark3250d ago (Edited 3250d ago )

The Scorpio launches 4 years after Xbox One and is essentially the birth of a new gen.I believe the Scorpio 2 probably comes out 2021.

The NEO is a weak mid gen upgrade releasing this year (yes book it) only 3 years after PS4 launched. PS5 likely comes 2020. So if you buy ALL Sony consoles over a span of 7 years you would have bought 3 devices.

Sony seems to be adopting the Iphone/Iphone S model.

Microsoft just looks to be going with a 4 year model.

I don't see it.

objdadon3249d ago

Hmmm, let's see. Xbox one, xbox one s, Xbox scorpio. What were you saying about 3 consoles in a 7 year span? That looks like 3 consoles from Microsoft in a 5 year span. And don't hit me with "s model is just a slim." It has 4k upscaling, 4k Blu-ray player, hdr, and does 4k streaming, it's not "just a slim. "

343_Guilty_Spark3249d ago

You're deliberately being disigneous. Slim is just a slim with 4k Blu Ray, HDR support, AND a 4k scaler. The Xbox chipset stil l1.31 TF. Scorpio is a next gen console.

MachuchalBrotha3163249d ago

How is the Neo "weak" mid gen upgrade? Doesn't it have a better gpu and better cpu speed. Better for VR?

343_Guilty_Spark3249d ago

It's weak compared to Scorpio.

Goldby3247d ago

@343

Why are you comparing a mid gen upgrade with next gen?

Thats like saying the NES is weak compared to the ps4.... doesnt help your argument one bit

butchertroll3249d ago

Quote :

Actually you get a better perspective if you move out to the estimated arrival of PS5.5 which should be here around 2022. So four consoles in 10 years.

....

Hahahaha! Another pathetic excuse. Let's go to year 2023, shall we? Well, Scorpio 2 holiday 2023 release. That's a 4 Xbox consoles.

343_Guilty_Spark3249d ago (Edited 3249d ago )

Microsoft isn't doing mid gen upgrades. EACH hardware unit that is not a revision is a full upgrade.

Sony is doing mid gen upgrades so it stands to reason you'd be buying more devices if you bought a PS4, NEO, then a PS5.

Math doesn't seem to be your strong suit.

Xbox One 2013
Xbox Scorpio 2017
Xbox Scorpio 2 2021

PS4 2013
Ps4 Neo 2016
PS5 2019
Ps5 Neo 2022
Ps6 2025

I have to go through thro

butchertroll3249d ago

Quote :

Xbox One 2013
Xbox Scorpio 2017
Xbox Scorpio 2 2021

PS4 2013
Ps4 Neo 2016
PS5 2019
Ps5 Neo 2022
Ps6 2025

.....

Now you added a PS6. Looks like math is not your strong suit. You deliberately left 2 Xbox consoles and put one PS console, dumbass, Xbone fan trying to spin things ( AS USUAL ) Let's see :

Xbox One 2013
Xbox Scorpio 2017
Next Xbox 2020/21
Xbox Scorpio 2 2023

PS4 2013
Ps4 Neo 2016
PS5 2019
Ps5 Neo 2022

So, i see 4 Xbox consoles and 4 PS consoles in 10 year lifespan. Go back to school.

343_Guilty_Spark3249d ago (Edited 3249d ago )

Why are you inserting "Next Xbox"? MS doesn't do mid gen upgrades.

It's...

Xbox One > Scorpio (Xbox 2) > Xbox Three or Scorpio 2.

Try harder.

butchertroll3249d ago

Quote :

Xbox One > Scorpio (Xbox 2) > Xbox Three or Scorpio 2.

There you go. You counted 4 Xbox consoles. Well done. Next Xbox or Xbox Three, same shit.

343_Guilty_Spark3249d ago

You obviously can't read.

Xbox One 2013> Xbox Two (Scorpio) 2017> Xbox Three (Scorpio2/AgentSmith??????) 2021 > Xbox Four (????) 2025 = 4 xboxes over 12 years

PS4 2013> PS4 Neo 2016 > PS5 2019> PS5 Neo 2022 > PS6 2025 = 5 PSs over 12 years

Goldby3247d ago

at 343

More like

Xbox one 2013 --- Xbox One S 2016 --- Xbox Scorpio 2017 = 3 consoles in 4 years....
Playstation 4 2013 --- Neo 2016 = 2 consoles in 3 years....

talking facts alone. if you buy all MS consoles over the span of 4 years (2013-2017) that's 3 consoles. and dont try to word that as me looking dumb, you walked into that with this simple comment you made

"So if you buy ALL Sony consoles over a span of 7 years you would have bought 3 devices."

At the end of the day, in the 3 years of this generation, Sony only has one console on the market and MS has 2. and by next year, it will be 2 consoles for Sony, and 3 for MS

Glen Schofield: Dead Space Wouldn’t Be Greenlit Today—Publishers Are Afraid to Take Risks

Sector sat down with Glen Schofield—creator of Dead Space and The Callisto Protocol—during the Game Developers Session (GDS) in Prague to discuss the evolution of the game industry, the current challenges of AAA development, and why it's become so hard to get original ideas off the ground in today’s risk-averse environment.

1nsomniac4d ago

It’s easy enough to say that, but why? It feels weird to me when developers say this but common sense would tell you everything about the idea itself should work.

The idea of the concept seems like a winner at whichever angle you look at it so why would publishers not greenlight it?

… it’s almost as if the majority of publishers are massively incompetent at their jobs. But there’s no surprise to anyone there.

WILD HEARTS S Q&A - 'Switch 2 Is Closer to the Series S Than PS4'

This new tech, in 2025, is more comparable to 2020 tech than 2013 tech.

*tip toes over that bar*

Also, why are all the comparisons to PS4 and not Xbox One?

Neonridr6d ago

PS4 is more powerful than the XB1, S2 is more powerful than both, so why not use the higher of the two?

Christopher6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Probably because people who owned an XBO and not a PS4 don't really know what it means. The assumption is that everyone is as knowledgeable as journalists or gaming news junkies. Gaming is mainstream, that means that mass majority of people don't know these specifics, only online talking points.

And the PS4 and XBO are the closest in power systems we've ever had, so this 'more powerful' is so small, it really isn't the big talking point people think it is.

RaidenBlack4d ago

I'd rather add, Xbox One X can be used as a good metric to gauge if a said system is more powerful than last gen.

VariantAEC4d ago

It's pretty clear that Switch 2 isn't more powerful than PS4 Pro. Is the base model PS4 being beaten? Well, Switch 2 is hardly ever actually being compared to the base model PS4, but seeing as how it's yet to outperform PS4 Pro in basically any other way than loading data into RAM in video comparisons. I have to assume the individual developer being interviewed has very little experience with PS4 and Xbox One.

OtterX5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Which is great for a handheld/hybrid! Some people still stick to Digital Foundry's PS4 comparison comment as gospel, back when they were just watching trailers and hadn't even had their hands on it yet.

With that said, this interview doesn't go into very much depth on this. I'd like to see more analysis, but so far I'm really impressed with the performance since I got mine on Friday. Truth be told, having a PS4 Pro level handheld is enough for me. Anything beyond is icing. I'm not looking to replace my PS5 or PC.

VariantAEC4d ago

In this case Digital Foundry is right. They didn't adequately explain or sound remotely confident when showing Switch 2's "visual" benefits in that HogLeg comparison was related to loading. Yes, sometimes two massive world segments can be connected by a smaller individual loading zone like how Jak 2 handled open world zones on PS2. There is a small room that in itself is it's own discrete loading zone that you wait inside as the next massive portion of the map loads in. Very common when going from Haven City to any part outside of the city owlr when descending into the sewers or entering the city from the outside or leaving the sewers. Anyway, the HogLeg skybridge loading zone is more detailed because Switch 2 could load in more varied textures. Models load pretty fast. It's probable that the decimated models that appear in the Switch 2 version were supposed to be visible on Xbox One and PS4 in that scene, which might be why they exist on Switch 2. Unfortunately, the same video showcased above shows PS4 Pro is basically ahead of Switch 2 in all other ways imaginable. Higher rendering resolutions with a sharper cleaner image, better effects quality, and a better distance all favor PS4 Pro. Both the Pro and Switch 2 seem to have a pretty solid 30FPS performance level.

MDTunkown5d ago

For how thin switch 2 is it’s impressive especially when it’s stronger than steam deck and cost less

Christopher5d ago

Steam Deck is cheaper at $399. Switch 2 also uses cheaper materials. See joycon drift still being an issue. You'll also save a ton more money on software alone with the Steam Deck.

Honestly, if the Steam Deck was released today, it likely would at least match the Switch 2 in areas where it outperforms the Steam Deck but still have more advantages. Main thing holding back the Deck is the cores and resolution, because it still has the better CPU and GPU otherwise.

Neonridr4d ago

@Christopher - I own one, no stick drift. My OG joycons never had drift either.

Steam Deck relies on FSR which is still inferior to DLSS. Not to mention that the S2 can push double the GPU performance in docked mode. Deck has more memory, which is nice.

I have both, but my S2 will be getting the lion-share of playtime in the near future. That being said, I can still appreciate being able to play my steam games on the go.

FinalFantasyFanatic4d ago

For me, the game sales/prices and flexibility of the Steam deck outweigh the cost of the system itself, but I'll probably get a Switch 2 anyway.

OMNlPOTENT5d ago

And the ps5 was comparable to a PC that could be built over 5 years before it came out lol, how do you think consoles stay affordable?

Christopher5d ago

You're actually proving my point even more.

badz1494d ago

@omnipotent

PS5 comparable to a PC built OVER 5 years before it came out? let's see...

the best mainstream PC combo back in 2015/2016 would be the i7 6700K ($350) + GTX 1080 ($600). Sorry, but that setup is never going to outperform the base PS5 in games, especially modern ones.

you done lying yet or still want to continue lying so your precious Switch 2 doesn't get hurt by facts anymore?

CosmicTurtle5d ago

It’s a tech article speaking about specs people who care about this will know. I did not own an XB1 but know it’s at a similar tech level as PS4. PS4 has a far greater sales footprint, it makes sense to use it.

ABizzel14d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Technologically it’s closer to the Series S….. Raster-wise it’s closer to a base PS4 which has been the point.

Why Switch 2 is better:
The much better CPU allows for higher FPS than the last gen Jaguar CPUs could ever produce.
The 12GB of RAM prevents the system from being bottlenecked in most modern games (even SS fails here)
The storage while not NVMe Gen4 speeds, is significantly faster than the HDD in last gen
It’s a RTX 3000 hybrid, and DLSS is a better upscaling solutions than all other consoles even PSSR currently, and significantly better than checkerboard rending.

This is where the PS4 & PS4 Pro comparisons come into play. Natively it can’t compete with the PS4 Pro, and really closer to the base PS4, but due to the better CPU, more RAM, faster storage, and DLSS it can upscale resolution, image quality, and performance to get close, match, or certain cases exceed the PS4 Pro, and rivals the Series S.

DLSS is really the saving force behind Switch 2 getting current gen ports to acceptable resolution quality, and NVIDIA and Nintendo did it at 10w, so kudos to them, because many of the AAA 3rd party games are and will continue to be native 540p - 720p upscaled through DLSS.

Also this game would benefit from DLSS.

MDTunkown5d ago

And it’s also in someways stronger than series S. Xbox one x is a special console that was never fully utilised and has 1,5 times more teraflops than series s.

badz1494d ago (Edited 4d ago )

repsahj5d ago

This is an ugly port, they should improve it more instead of releasing it early.

gold_drake4d ago

sooo ...

what this is telling us, is that it comes down to the game and the devs optimization.

VariantAEC4d ago

There are already several games on Switch 2 coming up short in side-by-side comparisons. Cyberpunk 2077, Fortnite, and HogLeg are just the first examples with the first game in this list only having better image quality due to DLSS and slightly more stable performance due to that lower resolution than last gen systems enabled by DLSS, but having simplified models at mid distances and fewer NPCs roaming around than on PS4 or Xbox One.
