Battlefield Continues To Be Watered Down, But That’s Fine

Pixelgate writes:

''The more I see of Battlefield 1, the less interesting it becomes. Ever since Battlefield 2, the series has been on a downwards spiral in terms of depth and complexity. Gimmicks and fancy effects became increasingly important than gameplay and variety. It’s not to say that this has been a purely bad thing, but it’s starting to become worrying.''

The authors argument about depth and complexity only works if the actual gameplay depth is less in Battlefield 1 than previous titles. From I've seen that doesn't seem to be the case...

Things like the Zepellin, which are fully player controlled, the fact that vehicles now have locational damage that has appropriate effects, much better destruction. Changing weather which actually changes the gameplay at times (eg: fog)
Emphasizing class based combat, where you can't snipe with SMGs or assault rifles (which you could do in BF4, and even BF:BC2). Gas grenades and gas masks, the bayonet charge as a way of killing enemies but also moving quickly in short bursts... the ability to climb walls and such
These are added layers of complexity compared to BF3, BF4.
BF1 might be a step UP in complexity compared to its direct predecessors.

It might still be somewhat fast and action focused like BF3 and BF4, but as far as complexity and depth go, it doesn't look like it's a step backwards

Dice are so scared and some other devs are in the industry to change! they will keep making these game with the same core gameplay mechanics and its getting a tad boring you spend most of the time trying to kill people and its the same as all the other games in the series a little blood splatter and the soldier goes down it was satisfying in the beginning but not so now we need dynamic gore limb dismemberment, bullet impactation on character models reaction where they get hit! things to move the game industry forward.

As technology moves forward they could do so much more and make it look so realistic especially for a ww1 game and as the player gives us more of a satisfying gameplay experience and it feels like your weapon is actually doing something when I see a guy gets full blown hit by a tank shell and he goes down like he's been shot not flung in the air in pieces but just goes down like nothing's really happened and same with a massive bomb falling on a soldiers head and nothing just goes down and then a medic comes and revives him with a needle breaks this game for me,

These devs could make the game better but they will always rely on the same old formula and gameplay mechanics from their previous games because they sold so well this new game has to right!!

The more I play bf1 alpha the more influences and gameplay mechanics I have seen them taken from the their last game Star Wars.

For me the series will get watered down even further as devs will take less risks for massive profits and the battlefield age rating will soon go down to pegi16

detroitmademe2847d ago

@seanpitt23 64 player matches, large, medium and small maps, detailed destruction, a variety of vehicles not to mention horses, different ranges of firefights, in other words this isn't COD where there's a bunch of games that's similar to it. Battlefield 1 is one of the few games of it's kind. It's made a bunch of improvements and doesn't need to change a whole lot to remain at the top of it's class when it comes to gameplay.

denawayne2847d ago

Holy cow! That second paragraph was the longest run-on sentence ever.

Stay in school kids.

"Dice are so scared and some other devs are in the industry to change! they will keep making these game with the same core gameplay mechanics"

Because the concept of war isn't going to change that drastically bud. BF is a certain IP and they are right to create it with a base concept. If they want to make something SOOOOOO different, they clearly can just make a different IP.

Why ask for Mirror's Edge to be the new concept of BF when you can merely just get both BF and Mirrors Edge as 2 different games?

I'm not a fan of changing some thing just for lolz.

You have a base concept, stick to it....

Want to do something radically different? Sounds like a nice new IP. As a huge BF fan for over 10 years, I'm not expecting or asking for anything other then what I'm used to in BF.

I've grown out of that begging phase a long, long time ago as I've seen many, many IPs change for the worse that I realized maybe it was just better to just get the same concepts from those IPs and merely just get the new concepts form ANOTHER NEW IP!

I didn't realize how wrong I was until Resident Evil was an action game, DmC felt like crap etc.

Sorry buddy, I want the "same old formula" as that is why I buy BF. I didn't buy BF to play Titan Fall, or Call Of Duty, or Gears Of War or Halo, not to say those are bad games, merely that I'm not buying BF to play ANY of those concepts.

I want the same formula as if its not broke, don't fix it. Leave it alone and move on.

Ask old school Call Of Duty fans how they feel about the new Call Of Duties lol Oh they are different all right....

detroitmademe2847d ago

Battlefield 1 is looking like it'll be the best in the genre when it arrives. Why change if your already at the forefront of key features.

mochachino2847d ago (Edited 2847d ago )

Only thing missing is being able to shoot off limbs and blow people up. The World Wars were full of that. It would add to the experience. It made gun play very satisfying in Wolfenstein. Most FPS games lack a proper bullet impact which is something the very old games like Doom and Wolfenstein had in spades.

RegorL2847d ago

Wolfenstein is SP only, Doom MP does not really have proper bullet impact.

Are you comparing Battlefield MP with Doom and Wolfenstein SP?

mochachino2846d ago

@ ReforL

I'm talking about the original games. Every bullet had a clear impact. Modern games show a tiny bit of blood and the enemies have a physical reaction sometimes, often after several shots.

Red Dead Redemption was another game where bullets had a pretty good visible and immediate impact. It makes gunplay much better and more visceral.

Lamboomington2847d ago

It's important to change every now and then.
eg: they changed with Bad Company
Then from Bad Company 2 to BF3. They didn't redesign the entire gameplay, but they changed the feel of the game, and that's an important thing to keep your game feeling stale.

coreyweb2847d ago

And they're clearly doing that here as well.

crazychris41242847d ago

Its definitely an improvement over the last 2 games. I don't know how you dont see that. Like lamboom said more destruction, weather that forces you to change tactics, classes are more unique but still need some tweaking, location destruction on vehicles, notification from squad leader to capture a point, no more lock on weapon crap, entering vehicle animations and more. Now of course I would have loved to see modding but I dont think thats going to happen ever again for the series.

PixelGateUk2847d ago

I never said that Battlefield 1 would be worse/better than BF3 or 4 to be fair mate.

You could mark points to capture, you could do that since BF2. Obviously there's no lock-ons given the time period, much like BF1942 and Heroes.

_-EDMIX-_2847d ago

All BFs are progress, they all add something to future titles

bondsmx2847d ago (Edited 2847d ago )

Opinions are kinda like assholes.
Everyone has one, but we don't need to hear about everyone's..
Lol just saying.
Battlefront was a little watered down IMO
Doesn't meant battlefield 1 will be.

PixelGateUk2847d ago (Edited 2847d ago )

''Opinions are kinda like assholes.
Everyone has one, but we don't need to hear about everyone's.. ''

Goes on to express opinion :P

In all fairness, no one forces anyone to click on the post. There's plenty of other things to check out. Not sure why you'd complain about opinions but still click on posts clearly labelled opinion :D I don't like cheese, thus i avoid cheese based foods

CaitSith2847d ago

You don't hear assholes, you smell them.

Ark_2846d ago

... seems you get too close.

PygmelionHunter2847d ago

I read the title and instantly assumed it was a PixelGateUK article.

I was not disappointed.

You could say their headlines "continue to be watered down".

PixelGateUk2847d ago

figured i'd cater for your good self

PygmelionHunter2847d ago

Why thank you. Nice of you to put all professionalism aside to please a dear reader.

DICE Needs To Recapture The Magic Of Battlefield 1 In The Next Game

For DICE to succeed with its next game, it has to return to the roots of the franchise. Atmospheric map design, clear and defined class-based gameplay, attention to detail, and total chaos. Battlefield 1 feels like every rock, every glint on your sniper rifle, every falling brick from a collapsing church, has been painstakingly considered. So much care went into the design of the game, from its soundtrack to its costume department. To stand a chance alongside the behemoths of Treyarch and Infinity Ward, DICE needs to recapture what made their old games so brilliant, otherwise it’s all over.

"DICE Needs To Recapture The Magic Of Battlefield 3 In The Next Game"

/Fixed

...on a serious note, DICE needs to remove the Battlefield name.

isarai538d ago

Eh, bfbc2 was the peak for me, only ad dogfighting and the accommodations that come with it. Every BF after that was such an unsatisfying progression system for weapons and gear for the classes, 90% of the guns feel exactly the same when you unlock them, just felt boring in comparison. Not to mention the gimped destruction as the series progressed

Sciurus_vulgaris538d ago

I found Battlefield 1 to be overrated. The gameplay was simpler and less strategic than its predecessors. Battlefield 1 did have a woo-factor, but the gameplay got repetitive faster than Battlefield 4 in my opinion.

porkChop538d ago

If DICE needs to return to the roots of the franchise then why would they look at Battlefield 1? BF1 is overly simplified and streamlined. What DICE should focus on is Battlefield 3 and Bad Company 2. Those two games were the pinnacle of the franchise.

TheEnigma313538d ago

BC2 was the best. they need to get back to that.

Battlefield 1, Hardline, BF4 Servers Are Being Taken Offline by Cheaters; EA Silent on Issue

Cheaters & hackers have been causing grief on Battlefield 1, Hardline & BF4 servers, with nonstop DDoS attacks among other things. Unfortunately, EA has remained silent about it.

-Foxtrot768d ago

Course they are silent, they are hoping people flock to 2042

gamesftw250767d ago

Maybe it was a inside job then haha.

jeromeface767d ago

wouldnt be the first time, titanfall 1+2 anyone?

PapaBop767d ago

Not even if they paid me.. EA always do this with old games with less money potential, if this was Ultimate Team, they'd address and sort it faster than stories could spread. Why invest time in their products when they will just dump it in the following years? Then again EA never could see the forest for the trees.

Inverno767d ago

I imagine after those games were given out for free a couple months back through Amazon, anything that makes people go to 2042 is a plus for them

XiNatsuDragnel768d ago

They want people to go on 2042. My theory

excaliburps767d ago

Nah. I think they can't do anything about it or they want to sink money into fixing it.

Pudge102888767d ago (Edited 767d ago )

EA owns all BF servers so yes, they can do something about it but they refuse to because they dont want ppl playing their old games instead of the new one. Its EA we’re talking about here

pr33k33767d ago

if this happened in 2042, they'd have something to say. which is weird, considering battlefield 1 has more players on steam right now.

Pudge102888767d ago

Its so obvious that EA is doing this or hired ppl to mess up the games so that we’d be forced to have just 1 Battlefield working.

FPS_D3TH767d ago

Honestly it’s probably the devs themselves. They did an update to bf4 way back that kinda made assault rifles doo doo in hopes that people would flock to BF1 cuz BF4 was too perfect

There's a bunch of great shooters on gamepass; both legacy and new.

A recommendation I have is a work in progress preview title called Anacrusis. It's a lot of fun, and has a cool aesthetic.
