DOOM benefits greatly from Vulkan - Vulkan versus OpenGL Performance Comparison

DSOGaming writes: "id Software has just released a new patch for DOOM that adds support for Vulkan. Naturally, we went ahead and tested some scenes that were performing poorly under OpenGL 4.5. And we are happy to report that id Software has nailed it as DOOM runs way, way, way better under the Vulkan API."

AMD's performance on Vulkan is nothing short of amazing.
Devs needs to embrace this API more.

Is this the same commercial stunt they tried before with Mantle?

Maxor3263d ago

Vulkan is basically Mantle without the AMD specific elements. Even Nvidia showcased Doom with Vulkan on their 1080 GTX launch.

But in general Doom isn't the best show horse for Vulkan, the game is so well optimized that DX11 is all you need unless you have a burning desire to play this game at triple digit FPS.

TankCrossing3263d ago (Edited 3263d ago )

No Dx11, it's OpenGL.

Triple digit framerates are very appealing for a game like Doom. Hitting good framerates at 4k is also very appealing. Doom is definitely a good "show horse" for Vulkan right now. The only other example I know of is DOTA2, which is more of a donkey than a horse.

Hopefully Battlefield 1 will let us directly compare Dx11, Dx12, and Vulkan.

Take that DX12 win 10 forced bastards.

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil38d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

After watching Scavengers Reign? The answer is unequivocally yes. I really want something out of left field but I think people are too afraid to shake things up.

It's what I love about Shadowrun and Black Mirror. Love, Death, and Robots proved that there's an audience for stuff that doesn't fit the mold.

Weird games in general we don't get enough of, we need more games like Katamari and Mr domino, things like that
