Hidetaka Miyazaki Believes Dark Souls III's Maps Connection "Was A Bit Weak"

From Software President Hidetaka Miyazaki thinks that there was still room for improvement in some aspects of the game, especially map design.

I don't think the maps' connection was that bad tbh, it's still a masterpiece nonetheless.

Mostafeto3250d ago

I have to agree really, nobody can say otherwise on this game.

TorpeAlex3250d ago

Plenty can say otherwise on this game, and do. Compared to Dark Souls I the area connectivity and shortcut creativity is quite weak.

maelstromb3250d ago

While the design quality and art of DSIII was top-notch (as to be expected), and it is by far the most accessible Souls game, I don't believe it to be the "masterpiece" that everyone keeps hailing it to be. Just my personal opinion. DS1 w/ the DLC is by far my favorite Souls game to this day. Perhaps it's just that I found DSII to be disappointing in many aspects and neither of the sequels have ever truly eclipsed the feelings that I felt while playing DS1. DS1 was the masterpiece, imo. DSIII is a fine send-off to the series though, I will not deny that.

Mostafeto3250d ago

I think the reason people got so attached to the original Dark Souls is because of its uniqueness and it was the first game to deliver such a challenge to gamers at that time.

I know you said that you still think that DS3 is a good game but imo I think it's the best.

Player1243250d ago

DS3 definitely sends off the series on a pretty high note but my personal favorite has to be DS1 like you man. There is just "something" about DS1 that makes it has its own charm.

joab7773250d ago

"Feelings" is key. It's like the 1st time you set foot in Rapture, or leave the vault in F3. Nothing quite compares to it. For many, Dark Souls was the 1st Souls game, and nothing will ever deliver that initial playthrough, the wonder and excitement.

By the time most played DS3, they had beaten 3-4 others From games, so the magic is dulled a bit.

That said, I consider these games a genre unto themselves, and I will always want more

wsoutlaw873250d ago (Edited 3250d ago )

After replaying ds1, ds3 was technically better and the bloodborne inspired combat was better but ds1 was the better game. I beat the first 4 bosses in ds3 with out dieing and the pacing was off. I love the interconnected world of ds1. It was so impressive. It had a lonelier feeling and made you feel small. I loved ds3 but the bosses just weren't very good.

Dark souls was not the first. Demons souls was. A lot of dark souls players played demons.

meganick3250d ago

You are correct sir. DS3 is by no means a masterpiece but it is competent. DS1 is the masterpiece of the series and by far the best of the three.

starchild3250d ago

I prefer Dark Souls 1 more for nostalgia reasons, but I think if Dark Souls 1 and Dark Souls 3 came out at the same time the latter game would easily be considered the better game overall by most people. Just my opinion. I loved Dark Souls 3. Still playing it, in fact.

Masterpiece? DS3 ran pretty poorly.

JsonHenry3250d ago

Ran fine on my PC at 4k. Not trolling. Just I was surprised at how well it worked given the first two were extremely buggy even at lowest settings when they first launched.

3250d ago
Mostafeto3250d ago

"Pretty poorly"on what? Don't expect any game to run butter smooth on Day 1, it's normal for a game to have bugs on its launch, why not? As long as they are not game breaking or making it unplayable, I am ok with it.

In my playtime with DS3 on PS4, I didn't run into that many issues tbh, just around 3 or 4 in about a 50 hour total gameplay time so I think that's acceptable.

starchild3250d ago

It had stutter on the PS4 version, just like Bloodborne, but once I got it on PC it ran at over 60fps and was perfectly smooth on my gsync monitor.

IamTylerDurden13250d ago (Edited 3250d ago )

It didn't run well, nor were the visuals particularly impressive. I'm just being honest and i'm judging the console version. I doubt it ran well in 4k.

From doesn't have the best technical ppl, this is a known fact. It doesn't mean their games aren't terrific, but they aren't perfect as ppl like to think.

Hell, BL2 is one of my all-time favorite games and i fully admit that it runs like garbage. The Order ran perfectly on day one, just sayin. Spare me your thoughts on the quality of the game, The Order was technically brilliant.

It was still really well designed, I'd say the vertical design of the first one still made it the best over all for map design though. Level design in this game was still fantastic though.
I also have to say, There's a lot less freedom to choose which direction than any of the other previous dark souls games.

Mostafeto3250d ago

The second paragraph is what he wanted to improve. I agree with you on the part that says that the first map was the best.

StillGray3250d ago

I didn't think it was that bad, but this guy clearly knows designs.

Mostafeto3250d ago

He's Miyazaki after all haha :D

Mostafeto3250d ago

If this is really the last Dark Souls then I am happy the series ended on a nice high note.

Alexious3250d ago

They just need to change their engine

ShadowKnight3250d ago

Is there going to be another Dark Souls is the bigger question.

Player1243250d ago

I honestly don't think there will be.

Movefasta19933250d ago (Edited 3250d ago )

nope, but there will be another souls type game i believe.

bouzebbal3250d ago

Maybe bloodborne 2 announcement at TGS

Player1243250d ago

Nah, I don't expect a Bloodborne 2 announcement at TGS tbh.

Your Indie Game Just Sold 2 Million Copies… So Why Are You Still Broke?

Thomas Mahler: "Since it's quite bananas that a lot of players still do not understand the economy behind game development, I thought it'd be best to just break down a real example of a really successful first-time developer who managed to make a deal with a publisher. "

Terry_B23h ago

I wouldnt call a game that costs 10 million to make and had over 30 people from different companies working on it an indie game.

Seriously, no.

StoneTitan1h ago

its an independent studio that is not owned by any big studio or publisher. what else would you call them?

Santouryuu4h ago

I don't get it..
He starts with 10M cost for the game excluding marketing and continues to detract "other"costs...
Why are the costs of storefront, engine etc not included in the 10M?

thorstein2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

CEO makes CEO noises.

If he takes a 1 million dollar bonus every year the game is being made and the game took 5 years to be made, the "cost" isn't 10 million, it should be 5 million.

It's just more magical accounting. This industry is replete with it.

staticall2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

@Santouryuu
Yeah, it's weird. On top of that, he subtracts engine, tax from HIS own money, but this should be put on the publisher (or at least be split, 50%/50% or how they agree), because they're benefitting from the sales as well. On top of that, he makes it look like he didn't get a cent, but he (and his team) was paid the salary the whole way through, with bonuses and stuff. Probably rent for the office was taken care of as well and licenses/devices too.

And also, he acts like his games' average price was $10 (by the way, if the game cost $10 million, who decided to sell it for $20?! Sounds idiotic), which is ridiculous, popular indie games don't do 50% discount right after release and the most of the sales are done a few months after release (according to the publishers). As an example, look at Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, Factorio, Kenshi, they either didn't have 50% discount yet or had it years after the release.

Also, he acts like the game was only sold on Steam, but that's false. And Microsoft, i'm more than sure, didn't take 30% from them (because it's a game published by them on their platform).

The only thing this tells me is that someone is trying to manipulate us and you shouldn't work with Microsoft if you want to remain sane.

StoneTitan1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

because thats what he has to HAVE RIGHT NOW to develop the next game (engine, tax andso on)

Yes xbox of course did not have the 30% tax but then again he is just making a hypothetical, I am pretty sure their game did not sell exactely 20millions ^^

StoneTitan1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Its not the cost of storefront. Your game made 20million but from those 20million the store takes 30%. Steam took 30% from the 20million you made. got it?
If you make 20million in sales Steam takes 6 million.
So you only get 14millions. Then you have to pay back what you owe the publisher, so 10millions in devcost and 2million in marketing.
So you are left with 2millions.
From the 2millions of pure profit 70% goes to the publisher and 30% to the developer (depending on your contract)
So you are left with 600k to pay for your next game, for now.
lots of numbers but very clearly put

attilayavuzer5m ago

Really enjoy the Ori games, but the studio head has always been an insufferable dickhead. Those costs aren't included cause he's miserable and full of shit.
