Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness Review - WGTC

WGTC writes: Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is a microcosm of everything wrong with modern JRPGs, from its slapdash presentation to its trope-filled narrative. Worst of all, it's seen fit to cram in everything that genre aficionados hate: unskippable cutscenes, greyed-out save points and painfully poor AI are just a few of the hurdles you'll face on your way to fun. -

Is this game really that bad?!!

gangsta_red3229d ago

It seems the only thing these reviews like about the game is the combat.

This is the problem with a lot of JRPG's and I agree with what the author said, most are still stuck in the 90's and refuse to evolve with the times and become something more. Sometimes I can forgive this if it has a good story like Xillia, but other times like Zestria, the old tropes and old design flaws stand out.

Sarah_Ch3229d ago (Edited 3229d ago )

I totally agree, I'm a big fan of star ocean epecially 2 and I've been waiting for this since they've announced it, I can say kinda disappointed with these reviews. I might pick it up with God eater resurrection. And I hope really hope🙏 FFXV and persona 5 will take JRPG to a new level.

littlezizu3229d ago

Dude JRPG are doing great(not stuck in 90's)
4 JRPG were released past few weeks for PS4 (my wallet is crying),
1. Odin Sphere (MC 88)
2. Valkyria Chronicles Rm( MC 85)
3. Grand Kingdom (MC 80)
4. Star Ocean (MC 62)
3 of them scored great among critics

thepatientgamer3229d ago (Edited 3229d ago )

You forgot a couple important ones that aren't stuck in the 90s:

Tokyo Mirage Sessions (82)
Xenoblade Chronicles X (84)

moegooner883229d ago (Edited 3229d ago )

Most of the JRPG fans who I know and got the game really love it. I would go by rpggamer.com reviews for games like this.

Sarah_Ch3229d ago (Edited 3229d ago )

Yea I've seen usesrs giving it a good reviews on Amazon so I think I'll ignore these reviews and I'm going for it. Thanks for letting me know.

SatanicEyeJesus3229d ago

Didnt' know this site, thanx for the tip!

gangsta_red3229d ago

The guy reviewing this seems to be a huge RPG fan. And one or two bad reviews I would brush off, but there have been an overwhelming amount of bad reviews for this game to just ignore.

kaizokuspy3229d ago

No, I am a huge star ocean fan. This game is pretty awful and bland. The way it does cut scenes. Basically slows you down by walking and then dialogue but you can't leave the area. Areas are big with few enemies in between. The combat is basically rock paper scissors. Weak attack staggers strong, strong staggers skill, and skill staggers weak. There is a lot you can do specialty wise, but the story is pretty bad and the combat is as well. Just not fun in retrospect to past entries.

DiscoKid3229d ago

Can't really ignore most reviews giving it sub-par scores.

cash_longfellow3229d ago

I'm one if them! It sucks that the Star Ocean franchise is probably over because of the reviews.

_-EDMIX-_3229d ago

OMG LOVE THAT SITE!

Agreed. I never care for reviews on certain games.

Oh you didn't "you" didn't like it? ....thats nice. Many gave Onimusha series bad reviews too and thats one of my favorite series of all time.

tanukisuit3229d ago

OperationRainfall is a pretty good website, too. Not as great as RPGGamer, but still worthy of reading their reviews.

ChiefofLoliPolice3228d ago

Thanks for the tip I'll check these guys out!

From what I gather fans of the series and real JRPG fans will love it and everyone else probably won't. Regardless, there has been a lot of games/movies lately that people have hated on for no reason and they were fantastic (maybe not amazing but fun and well done) so next payday I'll be picking this game up as I've been hooked on the series since I played Star Ocean 3 on PS2 and the first two on PSP shortly there after.

littlezizu3229d ago (Edited 3229d ago )

The Game is not bad it is not best in series but it's good game, If you do side quest you will level enough to do long stretch of main mission which has scares saving.
New RPG released for PS4 past few week with Metacritics Score ideally all four are must buy,
1. Odin Sphere (MC 88)
2. Valkyria Chronicles Rm( MC 85)
3. Grand Kingdom (MC 80)
4. Star Ocean (MC 62).

Davemyrose5923229d ago

It's not 3 out of 10 bad, but it honestly is not very good, I'd highly recommend getting it when it's on sale, I'm a hugeeee jrpg fan and this disappointed me

Themba763229d ago

no not even close ill give a 7 maybe a 7.5.

DafunkyRebel3229d ago (Edited 3229d ago )

No I've put 30 hours into this game its really fun and addictive, I think these reviewers played like 2 hours of the game and didn't bother doing Private Actions to flesh out the characters backstory and interaction or even getting to the point when you can travel to different planets. The same complaint I hear in every review is that the characters are bland and there is only a few areas. Well if these lazy morons tried playing the game properly then they would reach the point when you get new areas and like I say before do the Private actions to flesh out character, game play is also fun and rewarding, the backtracking can be jarring but its not bad, it just numerous

3229d ago
ShadowWolf7123229d ago

It's nowhere near that bad, or bad in general. 1.5 is a joke.

Movefasta19933229d ago

The thing is, many action jrpgs like the souls series, bloodborne,ni no kuni, valkyria chronicles, disgae, xeno chronicles are loved by reviewers. And there a whole lot of highly scored jrpgs on 3ds. This game probably just isn't good...

ChiefofLoliPolice3228d ago

Or maybe those games actually are good...

tulholdren3229d ago

I got it and loving it but again I stopped listening to reviews years ago. Me and my friends are having a blast with the game. So for me it's another review I disagree with won't be the first or last. Oh ya I love that 90's JRPG feel. Keep them coming.

Davemyrose5923229d ago

As a huge star ocean fan this is very sad, I ot it regardless and I m fairly dissatisfied, the game is simply a shadow of previous entries, I simply blame enix for giving this development team such a small budget, many love star ocean it is not some notch title, and if it was say like Disgae, 5 a nitch title that game turned out to be my fav jrpg of 2015 by far

While I agree that the combat in Star Ocean 5's combat is pretty fun, saying that its story is more enjoyable than its predecessors is highly debatable. Also, it's not just the technical issues the game suffers from.

Gaming4Life19811924d ago

Star Ocean 5 was garbage and I was a huge star ocean fan.

Docmortem1924d ago

Completely disagree the games I played from the list all deserve their scores (Star Ocean, Nier, Tales of Zesteria, Type-0). While there are certainly people that love these games, they have flaws in many categories, that justify those scores.
Star Ocean especially bored the hell out of me. Lame story and face roll battle system (I finished the game anyway). These games are really niche and when rated by a broader public, fall short. In my opinion even in their own genre.

solideagle1924d ago

I personally have not played any game below 80 and thought wow this should have been 80-90 game. The only game I thought should have been 90 was Shadow Hearts II: Covenant. I am pretty sure there will be some games but average score usually is pretty good indication.

do you recommend any JRPG which you think were good/amazing but it didn't score well? I just purchased Tokyo xanadu but it seems way too slow like trails game but trail at least has good story. I will give it a shot

rainslacker1924d ago

I think there were quite a few JRPG games that got hit with lower meta scores last gen when all these reviewers were on their anti-anime tropes kick. Not that they should get up there into the high 80s or 90s, but they weren't 60-70 games either.

That's mostly died off this gen, thankfully

WickedLester1924d ago

Ni No Kuni 2 is way better than it's metascore.

solideagle1924d ago

I think Ni No Kuni 2 combat is pretty generic but if you add all DLCs then its combat is pretty awesome. I purchased the complete edition so I can say DLC changes the combat completely

FinalAeonX1924d ago

Ni no Kuni 1 is way better than its metascore

Father__Merrin1924d ago

meta scores are rubbish best ignore them. many gems out there

solideagle1924d ago (Edited 1924d ago )

can you please name few?

Kocurstvo1923d ago (Edited 1923d ago )

Useless to argument troll, but e.g. Eat Lead is hilarious and extremely funny, yet mediocre on metastupids.... Lords of the Fallen, Strange brigade... I could name hundreds

A beginner's guide to Star Ocean

Star Ocean is one of those series that did, and still does, things that others don’t. Think of it as a JRPG for fans of series like Star Trek. The casts regularly involve people from more advanced civilizations getting involved with those who are still growing, even though there are various measures in place to allegedly stop that sort of interference. As a result, people get energy weapons, cyborgs, magic and people who can turn into cats. It is a lot to take in.

Let's see here. There was another classic JRPG series that started this SCI Fi. It was Phantasy Star by Sega. Before Star Ocean, there was Phantasy Star 1-4 on Sega consoles

Bhuahahaha1980d ago

a beginners guide to star ocean....after playing the 3rd game
you've been told that the universe (SO lore) is just a ------------------- and close the book

VsAssassin1980d ago

Yeah, that plot twist didn't work for me. I wish SO3 isn't canon, but it is. Anyway, SE can just sweep SO3 under the rug perhaps by soft rebooting the franchise.

Nerdmaster1980d ago

The first two were so great, among the top RPGs on 16 and 32-bit era. I wonder why it went downhill after that...

LiViNgLeGaCY1980d ago

I still regard the 2nd Story as one of the greatest JRPG's of all time.

ChronoJoe1980d ago

Play the PS1 game and then the PS2 game and then the rest probably aren't worth your time unless you're a superfan of the series. I think that's all you need to know.

That's the focus of The Most Disappointing Video Game Sequels, and now we're at the fifth installment. This are six more of those games that were either rushed out, released in a broken or incomplete state, or were simply less than stellar experiences overall.

After you browse through and read up on the latest unfortunate games added to this growing series of articles, which game sequels that haven't already been mentioned in a previous article do you think should be added in a future installment?"
