Can Sonic the Hedgehog 2016 Afford to Fail?

After months of constant teasing, Sonic Team has finally confirmed that it is currently developing a brand-new Sonic the Hedgehog game. The studio has been very silent for quite some time now, with its last console project being Sonic Lost World, which came to Wii U and 3DS back in 2013.

After laying low on the radar for a long period of time, many fans became anxious about what was happening, especially due to the fact that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the franchise. Amidst all the excitement, there is, ,of course a large shadow of doubt. The series began a sharp decline in the early 2000s. While the situation began to improve back in 2010, it has since fallen right back down again. As Sonic Team prepares its next title, a worrying question hangs in the air—can it afford to fail?

Yeah it can and it won't stop a sonic game coming out. Look at mario . I don't care what anyone says mario has been making crap since mario sunshine.

At least when the main team makes a sonic game they are actually pretty good ( Sonic colors, Day time stages on sonic unleash, Sonic & all stars racing, sonic generations etc) not the B team who makes the sonic boom series and those nintendo exclusives.

It really is just consumer ignorance. They really think the same people who made sonic adventure 2 made the sonic boom series and those awful nintendo exclusives.

Sonic boom was made by Big Red Button, they have nothing to do with Sonic Team.

@timelessDbz I have to disagree with you on the Mario park. Galaxy, mario U, Mario 3D world and others have been amazing.

Sonic on the other hand have been hit and miss. BOOM was a joke and should not of been put on the market. Worlds was a good game. All stars games were fun but no mario Kart.

Sonic for me is all about speed but trying to put that into a complex 3d world is not easy to do. They kind of got it with worlds I just hope its something along the lines of that ans not boom.

And I fell for sonic boom.. really wanted to believe it will turn out good but alas.. I think they should take more influence from games like yooka-laylee and rayman

Sonic Boom isn't a true Sonic game though, it's side game made by a totally different company.

It's the 25th anniversary of the series this year, so naturally, it will be releasing this year.

When since has there been anything for an anniversary that's released before/after the anniversary? Do couples not celebrate their anniversary every year on the day they were wed?

Skyward Sword - 25th anniversary game for Zelda, released in 2011, 25 years after the release of the original anniversary.

Super Mario Maker - 30th anniversary game for Mario. Released in 2015, 30 years after the release of the original Mario Bros.

Sonic Generations - 20th anniversary game for Sonic. Released in 2011, 25 years after the release of the original Sonic the Hedgehog.

So again, what's point are the two of you trying to make?

Can't tell if serious. They could have announced the game for the 25th anniversary but it might not be ready for another year.

Hasn't the franchise only been failing for the most part post Sega CD? If its had one slight success Sega tends to follow it up with three failures.
