Pachter:Announcing Scorpio Was A Bold Move by Microsoft;NX & PS4 Neo Are Probably Coming in Mid 2017

Michael Pachter praised Microsoft's decision to announce Scorpio well ahead of Holiday 2017. He thinks both NX & PS4 Neo are launching in mid 2017.

Do you honestly think that releasing the Scorpio will do Microsoft any good at a higher price?
We are talking about a World economy. When the PS4 and Xbox One originally launched, they were cheap globally because the US currency was very low.
It was on par with the Canadian dollar, so that means the 400$ system was 400$. Now the same console who is 350$ and 300$ in the US is around 450$ and 400$. Given how that PS VR is selling at 400$ USD and 550$ CD, I can only wonder what will be the price globally.
Again, if all of Microsoft's game are also going to be on PC, if you're already willing to go that high, you'll invest in a PC and Microsoft wins nothing on the Xbox side. You can't say: "Oh, there's a game on that console that I can't play anywhere else." and the opposite cannot be said of PC exclusives on Xbox One.
It will fail. Xbox fanboys were already saying that 1080p resolution didn't matter but suddenly 4k might matter? Everyone has a 1080p TV, not everyone has a 4k TV.
Plus, it won't play 4k games @60fps without lowering the graphics.
We're still not quite there yet for 4k gaming.

Not all Xbox games are coming to PC. Phil said they'll decide which X1 games come to PC. For one reason or another they just won't release on both. But if a game releases on both X1 and PC just buy the X1 version and get the PC version free. Even then the X1 version may release months or over a year before releasing to PC.

Microsoft has their games on Windows and Xbox, but that doesn't make them not exclusive. Those games can't be played on Nintendo or Sony consoles, which is what really matters in the console market.

I can't see a more expensive Xbox doing any better in sales especially considering it's merely an upgrade to Xbox One it is not a brand new platform with its own games.

Of course a select few will buy the upgrades of Xbox and PlayStation but most will likely stick with the regular versions.

Most people when they're asking in regards to something being exclusive want to know, can it be found elsewhere? they do not want to know the ownership of the product it's completely irrelevant and makes no sense ask yourself when someone ask if Call of Duty is exclusive do you really think they're asking if Activision owns it?

I do not own an Xbox, I own a PC and yes I could play those games on my PC therefore those games are not exclusive to one platform, I do not own an Xbox how do you explain that I could play all the latest titles on my PC?

Exclusive means only one multi-platform means multiple platforms ie more than one the other platforms that it's available on is actually completely irrelevant to the definition of multi-platform..

I don't know when Sony's Neo will release but they have little need to rush it out. PS4 sales are extremely strong with out even a price cut. I don't know if this is what they will do, but if I was them I would take advantage of Microsoft playing their hand early and plan accordingly. Either release as soon as possible or plan for an even more powerful console next year.

PSVR doesn't need Neo to function. It has been shown constantly the past year running on the standard PS4. Delaying Neo doesn't mean they have to change the plans for PSVR. And nothing that has been said this far indicates there are any plans for Neo only games PSVR or otherwise.

Yes if the neo comes 2 or 3 months before the Scorpio I think more people will wait out and buy the Scorpio. Neo needs a big head start if the stats are to be true need at least 6 months releasing so close to the Scorpio and being so much underpowered wouldn't be wise.

Well, the sooner the better for me. I'm anxious to play PS4 exclusives like Uncharted 4, Infamous Second Son, Bloodborne, The Last Guardian and Horizon with better framerates and maybe enhanced graphics too.

Also, the longer they wait to release Neo the longer they'll have to wait to release the PS5, because people will want to get a few good years of use out of their Neo purchase. I, and many other people, would be upset if they launch the PS5 only a year or two later. They need to give us at least another three years.

If they are to release next year, they definately need to make it more powerful than the rumored specs.
Alot of gamers this gen have latched on to ps4 because of the power difference to x1. The average joe has done the same because of hype around that power difference.
Question is, can sony do it? I doubt it but it will be interesting to see if gamers and the average person gravitate to the most powerful one again.

@dragon- it has already been confirmed that it's releasing this year by Sony also you might as well confirm most of the other rumors regarding PlayStation 4.5 based on its existence being confirmed in the first place.

Meaning that the specs are likely true the comments that were made regarding the rumor are likely true and it's release date of October is likely true.

The rumor stated it wouldn't have any exclusives Sony has confirmed that it's an extension of this generation it is not the start of a brand new one.

Sony is basically slowly confirming everything we've already read about some of the rumors meaning that it releasing in October is very very likely at this state.

I have two 4K TVs. 50" Samsung SUHD with HDR and a 75" LG Super UltraHD with Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10. I already have a 5TB Xbox One (1TB internal, 4TB external), a 2TB PS4 and a 4K UltraHD Blu-ray player (only $399). I am waiting on the Project Scorpio Xbox One. The NX is under no threat from the Neo and Scorpio, because the Neo and Scorpio aren't replacing the PS4 and XBone as new systems that will get games that the PS4 and XBone won't play.
Which is entirely unlike the NX, which will be a whole new system that, while it will get some ports, will also be getting exclusives that the Wii U just wouldn't be able to handle.

It's a brand new system vs. two minor mid-gen upgrades.

As long as developers are still developing for the PS4/XB1 and the NX is on par with either of them, the NX won't be threatened by the Neo or Scorpio.
Because the PS4/XB1 are the standards of the gen.
And matching up to the standard, guarantees dev support.

Well, let's see...
The 3DS seems to be doing just fine with regards to third parties, so I think yes, Nintendo's already opened up quite well to many of them.

Now if by third parties you mean people like Take Two, Ubisoft, etc, well, lately there have been a few of those names that have stepped forward with positive words about the NX.

But what people tend to overlook, is that that's a two-way street.
Even if Nintendo stays open to third parties, third parties have a responsibility to open up as well, if they want to make money on the NX.

And by "open up", I mean avoid leading off with last-gen ports.

If Ubisoft, for instance, pulls a second time of "Watch Dogs" by bringing Far Cry Primal to the NX despite how old the game is, instead of leading off with a newer game, they'll be tripping at the starting line of a three-legged race, and they'll drag Nintendo right down with them.

Nintendo's already going to start strong next gen by leading off with the freshest and most different Zelda we've had in years.
If third parties want to make the NX a money-maker for their software, they have to "open up" and match that kind of effort.
There's no middle ground or second chances here; third parties have to put out games that carry their own weight, and so long as Nintendo gives them a system that at least matches the XB1 in capabilities, they won't have an excuse not to "open up" and put forth just as much effort as they demand of Nintendo.

Neo will have to shift in time for psvr. Microsoft have the slim to hold it down for xbox division until Scorpio comes out, and beyond. Team xbox know there will be big interest in drop price xb1 and 299 dollar xbox slims. They have deployed those units until the Scorpio enters the battle. It's heating up, and i like xbox's strategic move. They're also letting Sony do the guinea pig work as far as VR goes.

if sony aren't planning on announcing anything about the neo until PGW, gamescom or even TGS, a mid-2017 launch makes way more sense than holiday 2016. and this would then give them plenty of time to make adjustments to the specs.

Listen, I personally think it was a dumb move to reveal a spec for it. Only reason is due to Sony upping their game. At the same time. You can give me a more powerful system all you want. If you don't have the games to back it up. What is the whole point?

It wasn't bold of MS to announce Scorpio now. They had no other cards to play. They know this generation is unwinnable and their only option was to try and get a head start on next gen and appear to be the aggressor.

Getting it close to the XB1 or PS4 would guarantee that it has enough power to attract third parties, because the PS4 and XB1 are still the standard, and will continue to be.
Why?
Because the Neo and Scorpio won't be getting games that the PS4 and XB1 can't run [Sony, at least, has confirmed that that's their plan; no Neo-exclusive games], which means if the NX is on par with them, it'll run anything the others can.

So not only does it not need to be close to the Neo, it'd be kind of a bad move to assume it would be, because that would only leave you disappointed in the end if it wasn't.
And disappointment might lead to an unfair judgement of its capabilities.

Power does not automatically equal success. Price and games have a far greater impact on a console's success. PS4 is the more powerful console but it was also 100.00 cheaper than X1 when they both launched.
