Mass Effect Andromeda Should Feature Default Female Protagonist

It would make sense to see a default female protagonist in Mass Effect Andromeda given the strong female presence in past BioWare platformers.

Or just let people choose as per the franchise standard??

lipton1013289d ago

Whoa whoa whoa. Not PC bro! I'm now going to grab a paper bag to hyperventilate for a bit...

But seriously, no. I'm a male, not a female. At risk of sounding "non-pc", I can't get immersed into a female character as I can a male one. These are role playing games. And I'm not trans so the role I'll be playing is that of a male. Or I just won't play the game.

jreed16943289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

I think the title might be misleading a few people. It might help to read through the whole piece if you haven't yet. Default female protagonist is whose on the cover. But of course, you still get to choose when you go in--that's classic Mass Effect. But male Shep is default protagonist for the original trilogy even though you can choose to play as FemShep, just to clear things up a bit

ninsigma3288d ago

Yeah that makes more sense. I was thinking that later after I'd commented. I think the word default just went over my head when I read the title this morning. I Don't have a problem if they make the figure head of the game a female but still letting people choose their gender in-game. I didn't read the article because I thought it was clickbait SJW after I had mis-interpreted the title.

andrewsquall3288d ago

So that means in motion capped cutscenes, the male character will move around like a female? That will be hilarious especially if its a buff roided out looking character.

Paul_Cesar3288d ago

That's what she said in the article.

-Foxtrot3289d ago

Why? To suck up to feminists

annoyedgamer3289d ago

I'm surprised EA didn't do it in BF1 to be honest. They got some whiners, namely VG247 who couldn't handle it. I might actually go out and buy the game to support their defiance now.

Lamboomington3289d ago

"I'm surprised EA didn't do it in BF1 to be honest. They got some whiners, namely VG247 who couldn't handle it"

Oh, were they annoyed at the lack of female fighters in BF1 ?

aLucidMind3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

I don't view it like that. While I don't believe it should be a requirement, I think they should have a female protagonist as the canon protagonist because it simply would be refreshing to see a story that isn't about "brown haired guy #34861". But like I said, it would be refreshing to see but I'd be more mad if they didn't make the story that they wanted to make than simply getting what's generally little more than a character model swap getting marked as the canon protagonist lol.

UnHoly_One3289d ago

Yes, the new default "Shepard" will probably be a black, gay, muslim, transgender woman, just to try and check as many boxes as possible.

Just for the record I have no problem with any of those things, it just seems like EA loves advertising how inclusive they are of every type of minority group.

It's like they are trying too hard.

InTheZoneAC3289d ago

lol joking or not, if a game checked off all those things you can bet I'm not buying it.

Gameonysus3289d ago

On a Scale of 1 to What about men's rights? How would you rate your man pain?

NecoTehSergal3288d ago

Her points are fucking horrendous, her main point as to why she thinks so is because: "because they can. There is a lot of prejudice and sexism surrounding female protagonists in games. I have often heard people (usually men) say that they don’t want to play a game as a female character. This type of attitude polarizes the gaming community in a completely unnecessary way."

She is essentially an Anita Sarkeesian clone, where she uses Zero evidence to back her claims, cherry picks anecdotal evidence and cries that the only reason females aren't picked is no doubt 'White male patriarchy' and female oppression. fml.

Her conclusion to the article is also just SJW Flamebait: "Surely the franchise’s male fans are not so insecure as to be threatened by having a woman on the cover of their favorite game. Because that would be utterly ridiculous."

annoyedgamer3289d ago

lol sjw alert, even got into boasting about the star wars girl, (yes I clicked, I regret it now).

NecoTehSergal3288d ago

She's basically Anita Sarkeesian who's spouting how there should be more female protagonists 'because sexism'. That literally is all this article is about. Talks about anecdotes of how 'men don't wanna play females' yet there are so many games that all gamers love that star females. That doesn't matter to feminists though. Lara Croft doesn't exist and people loving Heavenly Sword or looking forward to Horizon Zero Dawn? Pffft. Not enough, force all games to have more females!

thekhurg3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

Tired of these stupid articles. Nothing needs to change.

Bobafret3289d ago

To be the devil's advocate for a moment, female gamers do in fact make up roughly half of gamers. And I am not talking about mobile. That being said, maybe alternate between male/female default characters for RPG's and other types of game.

Casepbx3289d ago

But that number WAS pulled from mobile. Do you honestly believe half of console and PC gamers are female? Because it's realistically around maybe 20%.

ninsigma3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

You may not have been talking about mobile but those numbers certainly were.

Lamboomington3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

Well, that could be true, but if that number is done on mobile/includes mobile and facebook games etc, then they are horribly, horribly skewed.

There's a big difference between gaming on a phone or social media site and buying dedicated gaming hardware to sit down and play a game for hours.

Whatever it is, the percentage of female gamers is on the rise, that's for sure.

Ogygian3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

No they do not. Let me just say, as someone with a degree which was half statistics (economics), that the data you have seen is highly misleading, and completely meaningless from a business perspective.

You cannot compare someone who once played Candy Crush to someone who has a gaming PC/console and buys new games at full price.

It would be like saying that 50% of car drivers are women, therefore luxury sports cars should be aimed at women (where in reality they are mostly bought by men).

Deadpooled3288d ago

To be fair you don't need a degree to see how badly skewed and misleading those numbers are with just a bit of research (for the record I have a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering). Ridiculous how SJWs are able to infect the weak minded and misinformed with their poison in all sorts of different media, and are trying to make developers pander to their minority views at the expense of freedom of artistic creation.

Ogygian3288d ago (Edited 3288d ago )

@Deadpooled

Indeed, you don't need a degree. Really, it just requires basic rationality, but this is a rationality which seems to be declining these days among people who follow certain ideologies.

Deadpooled3287d ago

and among people who are unable to think for themselves and following whatever the thing on the other side of the square box in the living room tells them to believe. Then whenever someone tells them a different angle or viewpoint to the story they straight up refuse it, the worst blind is of one who refuses to see.

For All Its Flaws, Mass Effect: Andromeda's Approach to Romance is Something ME4 Can Learn From

While Mass Effect: Andromeda was let in several key areas, one of its approaches to romances is something Mass Effect 4 should consider revisiting.

I hope Mass Effect 4 ignores the inferior prequels and instead closely follows the far superior Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition.

anast155d ago (Edited 155d ago )

Mass Effect 4 should just make Mass Effect 1 but better with current tech. Fans would be happy. As far as romance, they should take notes from the Witcher and Cyberpunk.

Ristul155d ago

Later Bioware games have to little build up. You can have a normal conversation and all of a sudden BAM! The character you talk to becomes super flirty.

TricksterArrow155d ago

Reminds me of Baldur’s Gate. I wanted to practice some magic and Gale made it super weird. Not even gonna mention Astarion.

gold_drake155d ago (Edited 155d ago )

iii dunno about that.

the only really great and funny dating partner, is that outlaw guy anyways haha he was funny as hell.

other than that, i found every character to be very annoying.

ZeekQuattro154d ago

Shout out to Keri the Asari reporter. Current relationship status be damned as she's game either way. Anything for a good story. 🤣

Mass Effect Companion Tier Ranking

One of the best things about the Mas Effect series is the companions you meet along the way. So here is a tier list of all the companions from Mass Effect!

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast197d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine197d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast197d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman197d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast196d ago

Liam lol I can't stand that dude.

BioWare Thinks Mass Effect Andromeda Was Better Game Than Reception Suggested

BioWare thinks Mass Effect: Andromeda was a better game than what reception suggested; taught the studio not to shoehorn open-world without any meaningful content in it.

thorstein232d ago

I played it and it wasn't as bad as people said. Is it in the 8-10 range? No.

It's a 6-7, which means it's a solid game.

LordoftheCritics232d ago (Edited 232d ago )

Veilguard and Andromeda are of similar level to me.
6 to 6.5 ish

Though I think i enjoyed Andromeda's combat and sense of scale a little bit more.

XBManiac231d ago

Veilguard has better graphics.

neutralgamer1992232d ago

I agree with you It was a 6.5 type game. Gameplay was solid everything else was lacking. Playing at launch with all the issues was just absurd. EA could have let the developers keep patching and fix the game but they stopped just like they did with anthem. It’s crazy to think multi billion dollar publishers can’t afford to keeping patching their games get medium size developers can support the game for years

But when you have android wilson running the company what else can we expect.

OtterX232d ago

Except 6-7 doesn't translate as solid. 6 means a bit flimsy, but still good/enjoyable if you can look past the flaws. 7, a little less flimsy, and enjoyable. 8-10 would be "solid".

But I get your point. I skipped the game entirely, so I don't have an opinion on it.

H9232d ago

I played this game back when I wanted to give every game I bought a fair chance and finish it, it was the reason why I stopped doing so, god the game was bad

TheNamelessOne232d ago

I actually enjoyed Andromeda. It wasn't a 10/10, by any means, but I played it years after the fact, after a lot of patching, and I had a good time with it.

anast231d ago

Same, I enjoyed it too. I might even replay it soon.

TheNamelessOne231d ago

Might do the same, honestly. Went through the trilogy a couple months back.

raWfodog231d ago

I liked it as well, and also played it for the first time over a year after it was released. The original trilogy was a better story overall IMO but I still enjoyed Andromeda.

lellkay232d ago

The game is so unbelivably bad, it's laughable.

pwnmaster3000232d ago (Edited 232d ago )

It really wasn’t. Well for me nd I’m a big fan of the series.
Was it mass effect standard? No
But overall I thought it was a decent game.
6-7/10.

Armaggedon231d ago

You might want to try playing a truly bad game. Go boot up two worlds or gollum to get the perspective you need

MatrixxGT231d ago

Wow, two worlds…red ringed my 360.

Armaggedon231d ago

Lol. Its one of the only games that I have experienced buyers remorse with. The only one I can think of is riders Republic.

matt139232d ago

So delusional, the title was an embarrassment to the original trilogy. it’s the equivalent of 2042 to the battlefield franchise.

thorstein231d ago

2042 had a redemption arc and what exists now is a pretty good FPS.
