Have Capcom Gone Too Far With RE7?

With RE7 virtually unrecognisable, Zach discusses how Resident Evil is more than a series going back to its roots

obviously ...RE 7 is even more alien than RE4,5,6...

imo they try to appeal to a completely different audience alienating completely the original RE fans...at the start may have some hyped/curiosity sales ..but a sequel or even this game will be a total flop, as its already a bad copy of PT/Outlast cutting every relation from any RE succesful formula....

if i had to choose this abomination or a RE6/5/same-type-sequel, i would pick Re5/6/same sequel anytime

PaleMoonDeath3283d ago

Resi 5 and 6 alienated anything Resi 4 clung on too for the classic fans, I did not fear the enemies in these games, the enemies feared me, THAT was the problem. This is closer to Resident Evil than 4, 5 and 6, that feeling of being weak or defenceless is brilliant in the demo, I look forward to seeing the full game, rather than laughing at the dialouge, bullsh*t backflip John Woo action scenes, and matrix like enemies. Resi 6 killed the series for good, this new take is the only way forward with the series.

But y'know.. Resi 2 remake son.

UltimateMaster3283d ago

Here's the thing, aren't we already used to Resident Evil Zombies by now?
I am sure it's going to be great. I think the initial time you play a horror franchise you are on the edge, then everything afterwards is just more of the same you're already used to.
Maybe a new franchise on something different could have been surprising.
We're so used to Resident Evil we're just going to be like: "Hey, shoot for the head."
If you want a creepy game that will scare you in VR, this is it.

If they want to bring it to their roots, then we need to scout for supplies (Ammo, guns, gun powder, herbs) everywhere. Be limited on the number of Ammo we have, similar to The Last of Us, so that you don't waste your bullets on useless monsters, while running for your life.
I think it's going to be awesome.

UltimateMaster3283d ago

By the way I love the Resident Evil series.
I love the characters, the boss battles.
Nobody can deny they weren't great games.
I feel it's a like like Call of Duty today. People loved the new Call of Duty trailer, but it doesn't feel like a Call Of duty game.
Even tough you always played as a badass in every single Resident Evil game since the first one. From well-trained cops like Leon to Stars special forces like Jill and Christ.
"Horror" games to me today don't scare me as much as when I was younger.
A lot of the time Resident Evil used jump scare in the previous games, like crows smashing trough a window or Nemesis appeared. I got used to it so I know even if they try their best, I already know what to expect.
Say what you wasn't, but the controls on the PS1 were just God awful, with poor camera angles that didn't give you any idea of what was waiting for you in the next section. I think that's why we were scare because we didn't want to die and it was hard to control. Then I showed my friend I could kill Super Nemesis with a pistol... Good times.
I love the action, I love the horror, I love the exploration (which has been greatly missed since the PS1 games)

CorndogBurglar3283d ago

This game won't flop. Don't kid yourself.

However, I agree that they should have gone a different route.

I've been playing Until Dawn and all I keep thinking about is how great a Resident Evil game would be ifnit were like that. I don't mean make it like a playable movie, but the parts in Until Dawn where you are investigating the areas. The real, creepy environments, the controls, the near photo-realistic graphics....I just keep imagining a zombie coming around a corner in Until Dawn because it really is a perfect blueprint for a new RE game.

Except according to an interview, this demo was made before P.T. even showed itself, and Capcom were surprised Konami got in there first with a similar demo...

FINALLY! Someone who understands whats up! I have written comments that are almost exactly like yours word for word! They have gone way too far with this and if i were to choose this shit or 456 i would def go to 4 5 6. This is terrible, im hoping 7 8 9 doesnt follow capcoms trend, Example: 1 2 3 same style, 4 5 6 same style, hence 7 8 9 are also gonna be the same!

jessionpc3283d ago

Curious... I loved the old RE games growing up, and this abomination looks like a lot of fun. If the teaser has anything to do with this game's release, it's going to be incredible. The First RE mega hit in a long time.

O-or is ghosts too insulting and not right because it doesn't make sense?... In a ZOMBIE GAME. Get real.

***B-B-BUT ITS FROM A VIRUS, IT TRIES TO BE REALISTIC AND ROOT IT'S LORE IN THE REAL WOR-

Tell that to a... what.... 300 foot long snake with a diameter larger than a large tree trunk?

Tell that to a... what.... 1000x scale mega scorpion?

Tell that to a... what.... a 10 foot tall alligator?

Tell that to a... what... 20 ton fish?

...I'm curious also... The Nemesis was able to wield a rocket, yet couldn't open doors...

DOES ANYTHING IN THIS SERIES MAKE ANY FKN SENSE?

No.

RE7, the rebirth of the franchise. 2017.

Calling it now.

I'd be a cool addition as a spin-off but I just don't see the logic in making it Resident Evil 7, it's great they took fan's criticism of 5 and 6 to heart but going off in completely the opposite direction and taking it to the extreme is a very risky move. I'd understand it a bit more if they decided to reboot the franchise and went "hey this is our new vision for RE" and I'd even be excited at the future possibilities but calling it RE7 just doesn't seem right.

TheCommentator3283d ago

Strange that going back to it's roots meant not doing anything that made the franchise great, copying PT, and making it a sequel to those crappy RE games that tarnished the series in the first place. Maybe they think burying the franchise will put the series closer to it's roots, because roots belong underground, but this apple unfortunately fell too far from the tree to be any good as a RE game.

We know what fans want? Why didn't you listen then, Crapcom???

Kombatologist3281d ago

Who are you to assume what I want?

I've been a fan since the original RE1 on PS1 in 1996. Before we even owned a PS1, my brother and I would rent one from Blockbuster just to play RE1 all hours of the night. I've fallen asleep while playing RE1. I've beaten RE1 without a memory card. I've beaten RE1 with Chris in 1 hour and 28 minutes (not the fastest time, but still pretty fast).

Point being, I've paid my dues, Jack.

The game was scary as hell for its time, but that feeling diminished through subsequent games. To me, RE is about wanting to see what's around the next corner or in the next room, but being too scared to do so; it's about mixing herbs and solving puzzles; it's about limited ammo, boss fights, and the occasional jump scare. If RE7 can deliver any of that (and it sounds like it will), then count me the eff in. It's not like RE hasn't used a first-person perspective before; the classic games used them as a loading screen when opening doors. It didn't create the third-person horror genre, either (Alone in the Dark).

Whether you want to admit it or not, the RE we knew and loved has been dead for a long time, but that doesn't mean we can't love again. It's up to you if you want to embrace the changes, but after RE5 and 6, how can you not? I can't speak for everyone, but as someone with the credentials above, I want, nay, NEED this game.

TheCommentator3281d ago (Edited 3281d ago )

You've got a lot to say for someone who knows nothing about why I hold my opinion. When did I say you couldn't like the new direction for the series? More importantly, who are you to say what I want? Crapcom were the ones who'd said that the series was going back to it's roots, not me. That doesn't mean make it totally different than either the originals or the shit that came after Code Veronica. It means Zombies, puzzle solving, and atmosphere. Not just atmosphere. And not some shitty sequel to RE6.

Everything, up till RE4 was amazing, then all of the sudden it was Leon's quest to save the Presidents Daughter from a space virus? Bullshit. Crapcom sucks ass, the direction of the new RE sucks ass, and the way you talk to other people sucks ass, so GTFO, because my opinion is just as valid as yours.

Furthermore, I didn't say anything about the perspective, which I prefer in my games, nor did I say you couldn't like it. Instead of trying to shit on my opinion with your personal attacks, why don't you tell people what you like about the game instead? I've put in more time than most people in the classic RE series, and as a fan I don't like it, Kombatologist. That's MY opinion.

TheOneWhoIsTornApart3283d ago

Can someone please tell me if the the full game is supposed to be a much bigger, meatier kind of game with better graphics?. Is the demo just a sort of concept teaser or something?.

Xack3283d ago

Capcom called the demo a 'tonal preview', basically giving players a glimpse into the direction of RE7. Will have combat, but no where near the amount that RE 4-6 had.

TheOneWhoIsTornApart3283d ago

Ok cool. I played the demo and found it to be an interesting direction to go into with the franchise but didn't know very many details about the game. Has Capcom said anything about the graphics at all?. I hope the full game to be much better looking.

KentBlake3283d ago (Edited 3283d ago )

I definitely don't like the change to the first person perspective.

And if it becomes a "hide and seek" type of game (like Outlast and Alien Isolation where you can barely fight back), I'll probably never play it. That's not what I look for in a RE game.

RyanShutup3283d ago

It won't be they confirmed there's weapons, herbs, etc. Also there's an axe in the demo... outlast didn't have any weapons, judging from the demo it won't be hide and seek because there's no places to actually hide.

MrsNesbitt3283d ago

I may be in the minority here but I cannot wait for RE7. The demo was absolutely terrifying, and with the horror scene over-indulged at the moment, it did feel quite refreshing. I am an original Resi fan, but sometimes a long-loved series has to take a different form. Similar to Tomb Raider being upheaved? Anyway, just my humble two cents.

Chexs19903283d ago

It's not that the demo was horrible, but that it has nothing to do with RE. The demo itself was awesome imo, but it should have been a spin off or a new IP, instead of riding the franchise name :)
RE, to me, will always be a third person, supply hoarding, scary Adventure with some decent puzzles ^^
The demo kind of has that hide and seek feel to it, which some of the other commenters points out.

Pongwater3283d ago

They made the first RE I want to play since RE3. Even in first person the demo felt more like RE than anything since RE3, imo.

Jakallov33283d ago

scary adventure with puzzles? haha that resident evil died looong ago

Hold_It3283d ago

You're not alone, and agreed.
Another original RE fan? :D
Yeah, this game needed the change especially coming from 5, and 6. It cracks me up that people keep saying this should have been a new IP, because the "links" to the series go over their heads, or they don't understand that this is a playable teaser to show that they can bring the atmosphere of the originals back and nothing more.

RyanShutup3283d ago

I'm with you man, I pre-ordered it after playing the demo for like 5 mins. All these haters are the same people that LOVED Silent Hills (even tho that was a huge deviation from the SH formula). Double standards ftw. They'll all buy it too when it gets "good" reviews.

MrsNesbitt3283d ago

Agreed! I also loved Silent Hills, but we're never gonna get it, and Konami butchered the series in the later games anyway.

NapalmSanctuary3283d ago

P.T. wasn't Silent Hills, it was just an interactive teaser. Silent Hills was going to have a first or third person option or it was going to be primarily third person with first person segments. They weren't going to force first person view on you. If they were to add that option to this game a lot of the negativity goes away. You can't blame oldschool RE fans who do not like the FP POV in horror games for feeling alienated by this... especially those of us who have been feeling alienated since RE4 came out. They got us all excited by talking about how they were taking RE back to its roots then drop this on us.

mgszelda13283d ago

Resident evil isn't supposed to be supernatural is my only issue. I am glad at least it's not the same formula of 4 through 6. Resident Evil 4 is like the black album from Metallica (awesome but the beginning of bad stuff to come)

Kombatologist3282d ago

@mgszelda1

Supernatural themes are nothing new to the series. Zombies are technically supernatural, Wesker had supernatural abilities, etc.

I see nothing wrong with the series adding ghosts in the mix as long as it plays a part in the story. We know nothing about the ghost girl in the teaser.

CorndogBurglar3283d ago

Yeah but at least Tomb Raider kept a 3rd person perspective with action and puzzles. Its essentially the same thing. It would be different if they made Tomb Raider a first person perspecrive though.

Having said that, I'm disappointed with RE7's direction as I've played every RE since then original, although for some reason I'm still interested in this.

Sure I wish they would have made it more like the originals, but for some reason I'm still excited for this.

Hold_It3283d ago

Ehh, I'm not too sure about an Action Adventure game in first person. I'm sure there might be some good ones out there, but if there are, I haven't heard of them or played them. I really like what they've done to Tomb Raider though, really feels like they took the mechanics that Crystal Dynamics brought in with Legend and improved upon them for the best. Quite an exhilarating experience.

I can understand your frustration, and disappointment. I wasn't open to 4 when it came out, and had a similar reaction to how the average person is with RE7 going to first person. I had to suspend my prior thoughts, and I played 4 and enjoyed it for what it was. I didn't think it was better than the ones before it, but I did like the direction it took, and felt like the game was very well made. I'm glad you've been able to experience all of them, they're great! I think we're all about to be proven wrong with our criticisms with the game when the final version launches in January. Who knows, it could end up being another Resident Evil 4 in the sense that people didn't like the concept or turn it took the series, but later enjoyed it after beating it a few times.

I feel like Resident Evil is like one of those bands that you really like where the first couple albums are an improvement upon their original sound, and retain the core fundamentals of what makes you like them, but then they release an album that is pretty hit or miss, and requires some growing on you to fully appreciate and like it. I feel like 7 is going to be a great addition to the series, and really bring some people in that like Condemned, Fear, Outlast, and games like that which have a more horror and thriller focus. Only time will tell, but let's give it a chance. I hope we all enjoy it, and grow to like it.

Resident Evil Fans Discuss Whether They Prefer First Or Third Person

Players have long debated the merits of third-person as opposed to first-person perspective in games and the topic has recently resurfaced on Reddit, this time concerning the long running Resident Evil series. The discussion so far has generated somewhat heated opinions from users on both sides of the argument.

Resident Evil has a long history of using both perspectives, with some entries in the series like Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 offering players a third-person view, while others like Resident Evil 7 provided players with a first-person perspective. Some fans believe third-person allows for better visibility and control over the character, while others believe that first-person immerses you more deeply into the game's atmosphere.

Third always

It's what it's always been and how it's meant to be played whether it's fixed camera angles or over the shoulder.

Rockstar783d ago

There was a time when I would have agreed but if you've got a vr setup the 1st person RE's are on another level.

That being said, they can both exist because they're both fantastic.

Babadook7769d ago (Edited 769d ago )

Exactly. If there was no VR version available or possible I’d say 3rd person. But because of the extreme heightened immersion, VR trounces the flat screen version, so 1st person please.

Sonic1881783d ago (Edited 783d ago )

They should have the option to have both going forward imo. But I do prefer third person view

Levii_92783d ago

I love both and the new mainline RE games should stay in first person for at lest one more game that’s why i hated that Capcom for some reason added third person in RE8 .. like why ? What was the point ? It just lost what made the new games unique and different. Re7 is a gem and already such a classic, it’s RE1 of this generation or well the prevous generation i guess i should say and RE8 is bonkers and so fun. Such great games.

Goozex783d ago

First person. It just ramps up the intensity for me

What horror franchises could learn from Resident Evil

Resident Evil has remained the most popular horror franchise in video games for a long time. These are the reasons why.

The remakes are good examples

Resident Evil 2: "Here's how you do a remake"

Resident Evil 3: "Here's how NOT to do a remake"

NecrumOddBoy921d ago (Edited 921d ago )

I think RE3 was actually pretty good but just short and flawed a bit. If Capcom would’ve just put the RE3 campaign and it’s dodge mechanic into RE2 (maybe called it RE Raccoon City Chronicles) and placed the the game in a canonical order LEON A, CLAIRE B, JILL C; then dropped the multiplayer nonsense, it would have been the most perfect package. I enjoyed RE3’s ties in to 2 and they streamlined it well. It just was a flawed deliver.

-Foxtrot921d ago

Oh don't get me wrong, it was a good game but compared to RE2 it was a step back

It was lazier, felt rushed, shorter in comparison and totally the wrong way for Capcom themselves to do a remake

Luckily they got the memo because I'm sure I read RE4 was supposed to be done by the team that did RE3 before they rebooted development.

RE3 needs a directors cut, it needs to be longer, they need to include the choices, add the other locations in by expanding/reworking the current story and also rework how Nemesis works. I want to explore more the city, even if areas have nothing to do with the main objectives and only exist to explore for collectibles or to find new gear.

staticall921d ago

Punching huge bolders while being in a volcano sounds cool on paper, but looks very dumb.
More QTEs = worse experience (RE6 mostly)
Sometimes big doesn't mean "better" (RE6 bosses mostly)
Not every game's suppose to have a multiplayer component (RE3 remake, Umbrella Corps). But sometimes it just works (Outbreak)
Small stamina bar for melee attacks is dumb (RE6)
Locking better skills behind drip-fed skill point drops is awful (RE6)
Do not give your flagship IPs to outside studios. But if you did, heavily control the game quality and direction (Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City)

FallenAngel1984920d ago

For me Resident Evil’s biggest impact on the gaming medium will always be that over the shoulder control scheme pioneered by RE4

Death in the Family: A Look Back at Resident Evil 7

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "With Resident Evil Village out imminently, it seems like an ideal time to revisit its immediate predecessor, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, a game that steered the franchise back to its roots. After replaying the game this past week, I can say with confidence it remains one of my favorites in the long-running series, due to its scary and disturbing atmosphere, challenging boss battles, twisting narrative, breathless action, and old-school survival-horror gameplay. It's certainly not perfect — there isn't much enemy variety and the final boss is a letdown — but overall it's a great game worthy of the name Resident Evil."
