Stealing Fallout 4 Mods is Still Stealing

It’s great that you can now download Fallout 4 mods for the Xbox One version. Leave it to a few jerks that don’t understand the concept of theft to sully the entire thing.

ask for permission to original content creator or let the original content creator know how much you would love to see their mods in the console

just don't steal their content and give an excuse as something like making political statement, doing what Robin Hood has done. It's just simply called stealing even if you glorifie it

jessionpc3293d ago

Eidolon3293d ago

Snob, prick, or otherwise.. the creators put time, work, and creativity into their mods and uploading their digital intellectual property, regardless if it's free or not, without permission is equivalent to piracy and is just a ****y thing to do, epsecially claiming it as your own or not even mentioning the creator.

JEECE3293d ago

Is it "their digital intellectual property" though, or is it Bethesda's?

Eidolon3293d ago (Edited 3293d ago )

Most artists, designers, or writers wouldn't have IP if you consider this. Digital artists using software from Adobe or painters using some brand of paint and canvas wouldn't own their art, then. Owning your creation, it being yours and no one elses is also an incentive for creating, if someone can just take it and call it their own without anyone batting an eye, we wouldn't have much in this world.

JEECE3293d ago

@Eidolon
Not the same. Using equipment or tools made/owned by a certain company (i.e. the company that made the paintbrush or canvas) does not give that company rights to your work. If Woody Allen builds a camera, and I use that camera to make a film, I would have the copyright to that film. Unless, of course, that film is an unauthorized sequel to his film Annie Hall, in which case it would be a derivative work, and he could claim the copyright. My question is based on the idea that mods to Fallout 4 are most likely to be considered derivative works based on Fallout 4 itself (which is a creative work, not a tool), so by definition Bethesda would own the copyrights to these mods.

Eidolon3293d ago

You're right, I guess it doesn't qualify for a patent so it's not an IP. But it is still their creative work.. so uploading someone elses work as your own is frowned upon and even Bethesda says for them to file a complaint with DMCA.

Valenka3293d ago

Well-written article and 100% spot-on.

Goldby3293d ago

We should find out all we can about thr person who stole it. Make a mod of them constantly stealing in the game befote getting caught and shove a mini nuke down his throught for "politcal reasons"

JEECE3293d ago

This article assumes that mods are the intellectual property of the creator, but what is the support for that? Creators of works have ownership over derivative works. If I write a story about Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Leia Organa, it is irrelevant how original the story is or how much work I put in; Disney could claim the copyright, because my story is a derivative work. Mods are pretty clearly derivative of the game they are based on, so technically Fallout 4 mods should be Bethesda's intellectual property, not the intellectual property of the creators. In that case, uploading these mods so they'll work on Xbox One would not be stealing from the creators.

I'd love to hear from anyone who can refute this (not being rhetorical here, I legitimately find this interesting, and if someone really knows about copyright law with regard to mods, chime in).

I think i made the mistake of giving Mama Murphy too many chems. Because I could never get my settlement past 98% happiness, and it even cost me the Platinum.

Fallout 4 on Switch 2 seems inevitable, but what about Starfield?

A Fallout 4 Nintendo Switch 2 port seems like an inevitability, but what about other Bethesda RPGs like Starfield.

I think all games will end up on switch from Xbox. MS has embraced going to other platforms now if games aren't doing well on Nintendo MS may be more selective in the future

On playstation they have been quite successful

anast76d ago

I'm not sure too many people want to play Starfield.

Profchaos76d ago

Phils all but confirmed they are going in hard with the switch 2

TheColbertinator76d ago

All are welcome to Switch 2. Microsoft Games Studios is interested in long term profits and market value not petty fanboy thoughts.

Starfield is actually a RPG. Bethesda hasn't done that in a while.

GhostScholar178d ago

People acted like starfield was so less interesting than fallout and drastically different, but I call bs on that. Both are decent games, but they are both filled with the appearance of things to do and items to interact with but 99 percent are just there to be there with no significance. Fallout has better character work but they are both sort of illusions that they’re vast.

Studio has been going downhill since Skyrim. Every following game gets dumbed down more than the previous. I'll be shocked if Elder Scrolls VI even has dialogue options.

anast178d ago

Fallout 4 was bad, real bad. Starfield might even be a better RPG.

trez1082177d ago

Fallout 4 wasn’t a great fallout game per se but real bad? I don’t know maybe I’m a little biased because I replied it not long ago and had fun with it.
