@Overload It's called the whipped dog syndrome. They bragged all last gen and went into this gen's reveal expecting everyone to love them. Then they got beat badly due to a poor initial reveal and unfriendly user policies they initially had in place. They changed things up and actually listened to the consumers, but were still getting beat. They posted sales data, but still included the 360. They lowered prices, included several games, but they could not slow the competitions steam. Eventually they decided to stop telling people how many consoles they were selling since the sales gap was a little sad (last they posted was at least 2 to 1 PS4), and decided to go with active users which includes free accounts (I have 5 accounts for various regions on the PSN, so I'd count as 5 for MS...)...

You'll see sales data again if they start out strong next year with the new console. If things don't go well, we'll continue to get user data.

If you look at the overall picture of what he is saying he is right. Its all about engaged players. Those players keep spending money on the eco system of that game. For instance a game like Halo 5 which has sold over 5 million in sales makes a ton of money in long run not just from the purchase of a video game but by the engagement of a player, for example req packs, etc. Even if in a year they lost half of the engaged players the revenue is still strong. The same applies to COD, Battlefield etc. Engagement is a fantastic metric for Long term sustainability and business. Moving their games to Windows 10 with 300 million plus users( the 300 million includes Xbox One players) gives them better muscle against Sony and Nintendo. Again no company can do this like MS. I don't expect anyone to really understand if you are not into business or don't have experience in this field. For me with a legal background and dealing with corporations understanding business aspects. I can see his perspective.

Note even Andrew House of Sony stated that Sony is bringing the Neo due to PS gamers going to PC. So MS is just being transparent and moving with the way gamers grow in the ECO system at this point and time. Think about it I use to dream of playing my console game anywhere now its a reality with Windows 10. Smart move MS.

One last note with bigger player base due to integration of Windows 10 it really does mean bigger investments in games. Say what you want about MS but I have not had a drought in games and the future looks even stronger. Picking up Scorpio next year.

You guys are assuming the goal is to sell hardware. Hardware enables the platform holder to sell software. If Microsoft can sell more software by moving to a combined Xbox and PC platform it will reduce hardware costs to Microsoft and lower the consumer price to play Xbox games. PC gamers will not be forced to buy a console to play Xbox games and Xbox gamers with both console and PC have more choices on where to play. Devs have more incentive to bring games to the Xbox also since they will be targeting a much broader audience. Phil is correct, console sales are less relevant to Microsoft with this strategy. There are many markets where Sony is dominant, but the gamers in those markets also game on PC. The lack of Xbox console sales in those markets will be offset to a degree by PC gamers that have the ability to play Xbox games with their rigs. The goal posts that some of you are complaining about that changed were never set by Microsoft in the first place, they are made up by gamers.

Well I am not really hearing from the same people that they are getting the game on PC because of the requirement to use W10. The only thing that matters is software support. If the PS4 gets more support then Phil is not putting the customer first. Right now that's not really happening with major publishers they are supporting each pretty much equally aside from Japanese support games that don't really sell well outside of Japan.

When we see a situation like what is happening with Nintendo then it's time to be concerned.

The density on this site is astounding. With Microsoft's current model they don't give a flying rats ass what you use. The major portion of the profits comes from the software and services not the hardware. They don't care if you use a PC (with their OS), XBox One, Xbox Slim, or Scorpio for that matter. Hardware costs money to develop, money to market, they still need to sell X amount of hardware to not take a loss and they need to sell it at a certain price for a certain amount of time. Gotta ensure its cross compatible with whatever, gets the latest patches etc. Maintenance. Warranties. 6teraflop consoles aren't gonna pay for themselves if only 20million people buy it.

If the focus is PC and software, why not get out of the console business all together? Start selling their software on Playstation hardware along with PC and let someone else worry about all the things Spencer says they don't wanna think about anymore. Sega did just that.

Under that scenario Sony would be getting less money too. If everyone truly does buy themselves a gaming PC then most will be playing their multiplatform games on PC. In that case the PS4 would end up being used mostly just for exclusives.

The only difference is Sony would be selling more hardware. But since platform holders do not make most of their money by selling the hardware, but rather the software and services, they wouldn't be doing much better than Microsoft in that regard.

Realistically, though, this scenario will never come to pass. Most people that prefer to game on consoles will continue to game on consoles. Those of us that prefer to game on PC will generally continue to game on PC. There is some overlap, of course, and that will continue to exist. But overall I don't think things will dramatically change.

As a sony fan you should be liking their new strategy. Ms make more money from software, so for them is a win win situation as they can sell more software this way. They also sell more digital software so higher profits for them.

Why is it wrong to have XB games on PC as well? Because they don't need to sell consoles to sell games then? Because gamers can freely choose what device they want to play instead of being told to play game X you have to buy a console?

Why is it wrong to announce a new more powerful console over a year before it ships? Because then gamers can plan for what they want to buy?

Why was it wrong to say Sony isn't doing a better job at delivering exclusives? Last year from E3 to E3 this year Sony delivered a bit less then 1/4 of the games they showed. Microsoft delivered a bit less then 1/3. If you match up console exclusive for console exclusive MS is not doing badly at all. It is only when you say fully exclusive does the numbers really change. And MS has two gamer OSes. They should be treating those OSes equally to keep both sets of customers happy.

Why is it wrong to have Xbox games on PC? It makes console sales irrelevant since the combined PC/Xbox numbers eclipse PS4, increases the game libraries of both PC and Xbox, gives gamers more choices on where they play, and also negates the minimal power advantage PlayStation gamers had since Scorpio and PC are stronger. The technical edge now belongs to Microsoft and the real reasons to own a PlayStation can finally take center stage. Simple maths:

Console : $15 per unit sold
Games: $40 per unit sold

Let's say you sold a million consoles and a million pieces of software.

$15 M vs $40 M.

Software drives the market.

Those arent excuses. Thats fact. Hardware (consoles) make the least amount of money per unit sold over games or accessories.

When ps3 was released best buys in canada were making 7 cents per console and sony was making less than that. Alot less. Now a game is better, maybe not near the 40$ that 343 was stating but on a 60$ game. Pubisher may be making anywhere from 5$- 35$ after you take in marketing, shipment and packaging.
Accessories on the other hand make a shit ton for companies. Ps4 controller is 70$ here in canada. I wouldnt be suprised is sony was making 30-50$ dollars from those.

So in terms of having 20 Million users for xbox and god knows how many use windows store. MS is making the real money on games they sell through those stores and theur accessories, spexially those elite controllers. By adding the windows 10 play anytime initiative they are able to theorwtixally double if not triple their user base without forcing them to buy a console that doeant make much money fot them, and instead of investing the money in the console for the pc players they are investing i. The infrastructure to allow those gamers to play those games.

As for 1st party content. Yes ms tends to pur hase ips instead of create their own as thy have been burned in the past by creating their own ips and instead find it cheaper to purchase already exisiting ips and their fan base.
Paying 20million for an ip with a fan base is more econimcal for them instead of spending that same 20 million making a new ip that may not sell.

The difference between that outlook and sonys is that sony has over 20 years worth of ips in a vault that they can tap into, the fan base covers 20 years. They have an image of leading the market so people expect new ips from sony.

To me it sounds like Scorpio will be their last console for a long time. To increase that much over their current console, plus the obvious shift to move XBox service to PC instead, tells me they will put out this hardware potentially as their last as they take the next 4-6 years to migrate its dedicated userbase to the PC. It's really quite obvious. They will ride the Scorpio as long as they can then next thing you know certain XB exclusives will only be on PC. The PC space is an easier target to dominate than the console space. The only reason you need to use the windows store is if you want the free digital copy across all of your platforms. If you have a slim, Scorpio and a PC for example, buying once will get you the game on all 3 (my guess). So far it's only slim and PC but Xbox live is what allows that. If people don't want to take advantage that's their business. They will be focused on games, just not games for a closed platform anymore. Getting affordable "steam boxes" into people's hands has replaced the traditional console model. PC has made out in this deal because it's obviously the high tier endgame.

The Xbox exclusive games that are on PC only work from the Store, you cannot get them from Steam or any other Game delivery program, same thing EA does by putting their games on Origin.
Steam owns the PC market and unless MS puts their games on more than one market it wont make a dent on PC gaming.

I can kinda see where he's coming from to be honest, but only because MS have just made Xbox sales numbers irrelevant. With the introduction of Xbox One games on Windows, they'll make money off the licensing alone, while not having to spend so much on hardware costs. The problem is, I can see developers leaving the format in droves and just developing for PC. Why would they go to the trouble of developing for a format which is on the way out?

Firstly, Phil ought to know that Sony is not going to be standing still and probably have their own strategy which includes ensuring that they stay in the lead with both games and hardware. As regards leading the console war, even if there is a likelihood that the Scorpio turns out to be the most powerful console this generation, what of it? Games are what a console needs and there is nothing exclusive anymore on the console that I cannot play on the PC. Any new serious gaming PC purchased at present will be more powerful than the Scorpio which is not even due for another 18 months.

Sony NEVER revealed the specs for the NEO and it is more than likely that it will match the Scorpio now. So this blows any marketing opportunities away for Microsoft come Holiday 2017. What can really give Microsoft any momentum in the right direction is the one thing they seem incapable of delivering - games. Exclusives that capture the imagination of gamers and are not available on PC so as to make having a Xbox absolutely necessary. There is nothing on Xbox that can compare with Uncharted 4, God of War, Horizon, Spiderman and the Last Guardian and most gamers I know want to play these games. I like Halo and Gears of War but this is the extent of what many of us do like on the Xbox at present and with future releases available on PC, there is no need for Xbox unless one needs to own every console released.

Console sales do matter because it affects priority of titles developed. Arkham Knight is one such example. Then you need to look at their PC space. Just because you own a beastly rig doesn't mean you'll be using Windows 10 and even if you do, it doesn't mean you're buying titles through the Windows Store or subscribing to Xbox Live. Console sales make a particular case here. Though, since PC gaming is largely more digital in nature, the odds of profitability are higher.

I really like Phil, but this is obvious damage control. And no, it's not only Microsoft who seeks to control damage. Sony removing vibration from the SIXAXIS because it'd interfere with with motion precision is as bad, arguably worse.

Market capitalization is a term used by many here as some type of lever to point to the true value of a corporation. And that just is never true, because Microsoft's. Assets. Far and a way make even the valuation number you listed or implied to be completely wrong on what even Microsoft. Is even worth.

We all know how last gen, when the xbox 360 was beating the PS3 in the US, how Microsoft was ALL about sales, bragging everywhere and giving punches to Sony.

The only reason Phil is giving this pathetic excuse is because they are loosing very bad and this is their defense against that reality. They would do better to their brand if they just shut up instead of acting like a bad loser.

With Xbox going multiplatform (PC and console) consoles won't disappear but will instead likely be the preferred option most still use as the online, forum/discussion community of gamers is nothing but a small diehard percentage of their market. They can survive off them alone just fine just like any Brand PC company can as they also get software cuts unlike the PC manufacturers.

MS policy of turning xbox into a service on PC might be the end of console gaming as we know it. Listen to the rhetoric, "we dont care how many xboxes we sell." I have. Not nearly as good as Steam is currently. The issue with using G-Sync is my biggest annoyance with it. That said, i'm not going to miss out on games I want to play just because the service currently has issues. Hopefully they will iron them out as they say they will.

They're sitting on IP's and won't bother bringing them back, they refuse to make more studios, and they refuse to make more new IP's. Sony got arrogant after the PS2 and thought they were untouchable, when the PS3 didn't turn out the way they wanted it they took the L and admitted the mistake they made so they went back to their roots rebuilt the PlayStation brand and came back stronger with the PS4.

Microsoft did the same thing Sony did with the PS3, they got cocky after the 360 but it failed and instead of doing what Sony did they took the other route and just sad, hey this isn't working out for us well just change the rules .

Xbox is now a service not attached to a console were going to use all of our platforms as 1 and still compete with consoles but with PC,Xbox and cell phones but still treat it as just an Xbox console since that's what the majority of people associate it with.

Sony has a long list of exclusives and studios so were gonna tell people how exclusive are bad for everyone because it doesn't work for us and then make console generation obsolete because that also looks bad for us and for our investors since we have never been number #1 in consoles, were also gonna make people think sales are no longer important because were also loosing to the competition in that aspect too.

Ms is just making everything negative a positive based on their definition and people are eating it up, I work with PR people and I tell you they can make anything negative look positive that's their job and MS are doing an amazing job at it hats off to them.

I miss Don Mattrick! I would have likely bought an Xbox this gen if he was still around. I like the games on PS4 and have played some great games on Sony's machine but I do miss Xbox Live and Halo, Forza Banjo Kazooie Fable and Gears of War. Those were the days :( I also miss my friends which stayed with Xbox.

I think there will be a major shift to be honest once all these consoles are out. A lot moved from Xbox to ps4 Cus they wanted the more powerful machine, I feel it will happen again and people will move back to Xbox because of how powerful the Scorpio is. Not taking away from Sony's neo but it doesn't look half as good as the Scorpio and people know this. No not everyone will move across but I bet a good good % will to get the Scorpio or even own both neo and Scorpio. I think the two new xbox's will be ace in terms of what they offer and no doubt the price looks to be pretty damn ok for the mini Xbox one.

Pretty sure they are still competing. If they weren't I doubt they would have announced the "Scorpio". I think tstemheir strategy is to get more gamers under their ecosystem of Win 10 so they can sell more software and make more money, That's where the money is made is through software and not hardware. With the XB1 S, they are just going to replace the original XB1 with the XB1 S and discontinue the old model. Sony will probably do the same thing with the PS4 Neo.

It mattered last gen through... with Greenberg constantly posting 360 hardware and software NPD victories. It also mattered when the Xbox 1 launched... it only doesn't matter when the XB1 is being outsold in both of its strongest markets. Engagement numbers and "xbox family" are just words to mask lower than expected sales. Combining with PC is just another way of doing this. If you believe this nonsense of them not caring then you must be blind. Every company cares about hardware as this pushes software. Why else launch a slim and then a Scorpio? It's to stimulate SALES...

Well, if Phil Spencer isn't giving Xbox too much credit, as if everything they do singlehandedly revolutionizes the videogame industry, he's trying to downplay the Xbox's loss to PlayStation this gen. Sorry Phil, videogame gens are still a thing, you're just out of rhythm with the rest of the console industry, and I wouldn't be surprised if MS abandons the console market within the next 5 or so years to focus exclusively on PC gaming. I will concede that I respect how well the XB1 managed to turn around and sell reasonably well despite its disastrous reveal, but it was never going to catch the PS4. Sales do matter, and so do exclusives, so if you wish for the Scorpio to sell, please consider announcing some games to go with it before it releases. Thanks.

ms is essentially doing what valve couldn't do with the steambox. however, instead of having to come out and directly say it, it'll just transition together this way. in regards to the actual xbox brand, it's not that great of a move, but as a company, it's not bad. only console-only players care about ms not having exclusives for just the xb1. pc gamers have access to every title now, so that'll help software sales in the long run. the xb1 won't catch up to the ps4 at this point, and if halo couldn't help bridge the gap, then nothing will.

i think ms is kind of being a bit too risky though, since people will start to wonder why they have to pay for xbl when it's free on pc. might hurt their console sales even more if people catch on.

My PS4 gets about 1% of my game time.

I'd happily buy xbox games on Windows Store if they actually worked properly. KI works perfectly but QB was probably the worst running PC game I've seen in a long while and Forza stuttered so much. However, Forza is a beta so it's forgiven somewhat.

It won't matter...once the Scorpio is released. Sony has this gen...or this portion, but it is doubtful the Neo will be able to match the Scorpio in raw power and performance once final specs are released, and no matter what gamers showed this past gen that overall power does matter.

He is right. It mattered before when Xbox was their only source of game software income but not anymore. Microsoft just went from 20+ million Xbone consoles sold to a potential 300+ million plus hardware out in the wild with W10 on them all able to run Xbox games in the future, obviously not all of the users are gamers but point still stands. If there was a console war its over now. Microsoft won both hardware and future software sales and there is no way to beat them now. They honestly don't even have competition anymore either as their only "real" OS competition is Apple and they dont give two shits about gaming.
