Microsoft's E3 Conference Did Not Impress - and that's a problem

LevelSave's Austin Griffith writes... "So, we’ve got the capability to run 4K, the ability to jump in to VR gaming, and all this amazing power… and we can’t use it until the end of next year. Well after every single currently announced virtual reality headset – including the PlayStation VR – have been released. Microsoft has put people like me in yet another tough spot: do we jump ship and pick up a cheap PS4 to get PlayStation VR this October? Do we ditch consoles all together and build a PC capable of playing the Oculus or the Vive? Or do we just wait over a year and a half to hopefully get our hands on some sort of Virtual Reality with the Xbox."

I thought it was good. Nothing out of this world crazy but was fine. I enjoyed it more than last years one anyway. And in fairness we did know most of the important things already. Imagine we had no idea there was a scorpio or slim model. That would have been a pretty big bombshell. They really need to fix that leak.

Last year e3 press conference was miles better than this year's

ShadowKnight2889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

Did you like Sea of Thieves? Not that many new exclusives from their first party studios. Cringe.

ninsigma2889d ago

No, I didn't like it. I did't think it looked any good since they revealed it last year.
Yeah it was mostly games they had already announced and everything is also going to pc.

Gitgud2889d ago

Currently this E3 day 2 has been shiet besides Steep, For Honor & Watch Dogs. Ubisoft had it's cringe, but it was better than MS. MS only had consoles to show off; their first party games that were actually good were Forza and Gears, the rest were shit. I just hope Sony can actually make me hype.

ShadowKnight2889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

Gears looked the same imo. But I am still interested in playing it in 4K this year.

mike32UK2889d ago

If the one S and Scorpio stuff hadn't leaked along with some of the great games this would have been a great conference

Gitgud2889d ago

what fucking great games? I expected Forza as much as anyone would, and Gears was already expected too. MS was shit this year.

mike32UK2889d ago

I though forza looked pretty amazing. Recore also looked really interesting. It makes no difference to me though because I've never owned an Xbox haha

2889d ago
Yetter2889d ago

No games?? It was all games?

thatguyhayat2889d ago

I think he might be talking about xbox exclusives

Yetter2889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

@thatguyhayat 90% of the games shown are Win10/Xbox exclusives so... what??

Gitgud2889d ago

@Yetter games that fucking release your inner hype.

andrewsquall2889d ago

@Yetter Its a question you never thought you would be asking this time 5 months ago lol. THERE is your answer to "so what". MIND BLOWN.
And people normally yammer on about the Sony Defense Force lol.

PizzaSteve2889d ago

Of course they had games but I think what you mean is no games that interest you and none worth getting a XB1 for and I can agree with that.

zb1ftw7772889d ago

Lmfao, the salty trolls are strong on this one. MS announce the most powerful console ever made and the showing was mediocre?

Yea, right.

Lmfaosmfh.

bouzebbal2889d ago

most powerful but to play what? and at what price?
games were missing more than ever in this conference.

zb1ftw7772889d ago

Youve got to be shitting me.....

seanpitt232889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

Yes you can a 100tf machine but if you have no games then it's kinda pointless.

I was expecting a couple of Unrevealed AAA games from Microsoft.

meatnormous2889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

That announcement would have been better if they actually showed a console or what its capable of, what we got was a concept, it felt like it was announced prematurely.

tinynuggins2889d ago

It felt like a teaser to me. Setting the tone for how future console iterations will work. They showed more than I thought they would on Scorpio

SmielmaN2889d ago

This is exactly what I thought. Slim model, great idea to bring out for E3. Then say your releasing a 4 times more powerful machine next year but provide no images/games/demos/exclusives for it? All three big Consoles can say "hey we are making a better machine than the one you currently have! Stay tuned!" every year. Made no sense the way they did it.

Announcing pretty much all their games will be available on PC didn't do their Xbox any favors either. If your options are pay $350 for a XBO slim this year, then probably $499+ on a new Xbox next year then why not save your $1000 and start into the PC building gaming hobby? Their conference seemed lost as to what direction they want. MS seems lost a lot lately.

Didn't they also get their most devout supporters to denounce VR for the last year in favor of their holo lens visor with a deck of cards sized FOV? Now everyone's happy for VR though? Man.... Rudderless.

Yetter2889d ago

Damage control on this website is working triple time today. Games looked great, they are coming out soon and as you said they announced the most powerful console every made and nailed the messaging

notachance2889d ago

you're the one doing damage control dude, everyone can see that lmao

every sane XB fans could see the conference for what it is, Project Scorpio looks awesome and the Play Anywhere scheme is nice for PC gamers like me, but the game is obviously lacking, no new AAA announcements, cringeworthy Minecraft demo, underwhelming Sea of Thieves gameplay, FF and Scalebound basically share similar demos, no new games.. wait I already said that

Why do you even defend them so much? If anything it's the fans not haters who should give them constructive criticism, don't just give them a free pass for everything they did.

Yetter2889d ago

@notachance I defend them because I like their games, I like their vision. I like how when they announce something I'm playing it between 3-9 months. I have no idea what MS has to do to impress the internet but this is obviously not the place to argue about it. The whole website is just a giant Sony fanboy bubble

andrewsquall2889d ago

@Yetter Are you just taking the piss now? You DO know Crackdown 3 was announced at E3 2014 YES??? Its now 2 years later and its looking to be pushed back to a Scorpio launch because of the failed Cloud from E3 2013.

Quantum Break was also revealed at E3 2013 and was only launched 2 months ago, just under 3 years.

Gears of War 4 is out October 2016 and was announced a year ago and will be out in another 4 months making it a year and a half wait (even more if you count the fact Microsoft said they were working on a new Gears game since Jan 2014 when they forced the team to stop making an original IP and to work on something people would recognise and crap their pants over with undeserved hype).

Exact same thing can be said about Recore.

Scalebound was actually at E3 last year and won't be out for another 9 months on top of the 1st year wait.

Yes, you are doing damage control and ridiculous damage control that makes no sense with nothing to backup your bullcrap statements. You are the one in a bubble. Be excited, it was certainly a good conference but don't make up crappy fake baloney excuses like that.

Mr Lahey2889d ago

See, this is a perfect example of the MS way of pr.

He actually said "what we BELIEVE is the most powerful console"

Big difference. They don't know what Sony is cooking up. :)

seanpitt232889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

They will be going on the leaks 4.2 tf just like us.

But nobody knows until Sony announce it themselves but I must admit all the rumours have been spot on up to now so Microsoft must think there console will be the most powerful.

RAM0N 2889d ago

The most powerful console to play multiplats

Yetter2889d ago

That would be the current PS4

Dark_Knightmare22889d ago (Edited 2889d ago )

Dude no one cares who has the most powerful console besides fanboys

IrisHeart2889d ago

concept consoles are real? Shiiiiet.

DeadManMMX2889d ago

It seems like it comes down to opinion and preferences. There were parts I thought were ho hum Minecraft felt forced. Final Fantasy was a mess of a demo. The rest was good. Sea of Thieves looked fun I think a lot of people are hating on it because it had the people in it but it showed the experience of playing with friends and looked fun.

Yetter2889d ago

yeah FFXV was easily the worst part of the conference. The battle just looked terrible boring

seanpitt232889d ago

Yeah he just kept getting whacked by the giants massive arm. That demo was very poorly executed.

ninsigma2889d ago

Ugh that ff15 demo was so bad. didn't do it justice at all.

Report: Sexual Misconduct Investigation Conducted at EA, Suspects Named and What They Did Revealed

EA senior staff has been investigated for sexual misconduct involving female coworkers, and these said people have been named publicly.

isarai11h ago

Aye just call Phil, i mean he somehow made Bobby Kotick's scandal disappear and gave him a few million dollar high five on the way out.

Cacabunga2h ago

I wonder if it will be censored with some in game ads.

XiNatsuDragnel8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

EA about to go down like Activision and then Phil saves the day saying.this is good for the industry and consolidation will help create competition. /s.

ravens526h ago

What's up with all these horny creeps. You gon be horny, fine. Just not at work take care of that shit before you go in. Rub one out if you have to. Don't be a creep at all. ESPECIALLY at work. But don't be one AT ALL.

Extermin8or3_1h ago

I mean part of the issue is that things transpired outside of work....

KwietStorm_BLM1h ago

You think deviants care where they are? Work sometimes makes it an even better situation for them because they can abuse their power.

NotoriousWhiz6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

"it seems that according to EA, given the events transpired outside of work between two adults, and the fact that once investigation has started that the alleged perpetrators didn’t do it again, the investigation is considered closed. [...] The victim still has to work with the people that harassed her."

Yep, EA is disgusting.

Extermin8or3_1h ago

I mean the fact stuff happened outside of work puts EA in quite a difficult position legally. These women don't seem to have reported the matter to the police which kinda ties EA's hands on what they can do. If they don't file reports of the crimes then yeah from EA's perspective it is stuff that happened outside of work. The only exception is the guy that apparently referenced things in the slack channel for work, spending on what he said proving it may be very hard and he may well be able to get away with plausible deniability. I don't like EA and I think these people need to be dismissed but without any legal action being taken, EA can't really do much without risk of being sued themselves for unfair dismissal etc.

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo15h ago(Edited 15h ago)

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus239h ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

SonyStyled15h ago

“There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future”

jwillj2k418h ago

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot17h ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

RNTody18h ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead7h ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage57m ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

anast17h ago

Good thing the bosses of all those small studios made their money.

glenn197916h ago

they cant do it right now they will get burned

lodossrage55m ago(Edited 55m ago)

Won't make a difference.

The whole structure needs to be overhauled. Anyone that replaces Phil will be no different than him, Mattrick, or anyone else.

Until the company changes how they go about business, nothing will change

lodossrage53m ago

True,

But they may as well get it over with. Whether it happens now or later, the burning is going to hit the same.

Reality is the ONE move that can alleviate a lot of this is the one move they can't make. Remove day 1 from gamepass.

Xbox No Longer Has Its Head In The Game

Microsoft & Xbox have shut down Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks to lay off more workers, insinuating that they're not in the game anymore.

XiNatsuDragnel1d 2h ago

They're headless for a long time because closing tango isn't exactly a good move

PapaBop5h ago

Ever since that cringe Kinect reveal they've never been the same. They used to make some amazing games and do great deals with third parties Early on in the 360 era they had games like Chromehounds and Shadowrun, both well ahead of their time. Now instead of nurturing their studios, they'd rather gaslight gamers and throw billions on pre existing studios. Not sure how Spencer is still in a job, I wouldn't trust him to organise a piss-up in a brewery.

Father__Merrin4h ago

We've said all along Spencer needs to go. I wish xbox went back to xbox only with new gears fable forza halo releases lots of third party releases

Those early rainbow 6 Vegas days and phantasy star universe are gone forever

S2Killinit2h ago

MS has its head in the game but the game they are playing is something different from what console gamers expect from a platform. MS’s end game has always been to use the xbox as a trojan horse.

1Victor22h ago

“Acquisitions always come with cuts”

343 trillion points shield activated
343 trillion percent damage negate activated
All damage reduced to 1 for 343 trillion turns.

Tacoboto21h ago

Especially for Microsoft, when Booty pretty much said they didn't know how to handle that many studios.

Why even make the acquisition then.

-Foxtrot21h ago

Didn’t they make the swipe for Bethesda when Sony wanted like 6 months exclusiveness for Starfield

It’s like…chill, you got Rise of the Tomb Raider for a year.

romulus2320h ago

Do they always come with senseless cuts becasue that's exactly what cutting Tango was, senseless.

H922h ago

Everyone's acting now that game companies care about games and Xbox is committing the Ultimate betrayal, they are all like this and you have just been quiet about it for far too long

Nuclearmoon21h ago

I wonder if Microsoft do pull out of the console market that it might open the door for valve to relaunch the Steambox. Competition is good for the industry but Microsoft don't even seem to be trying anymore.

UltimateOwnage17h ago

Steam / Valve are one of the few truly pro-consumer bright spots in gaming right now. Thankfully.
