Kizuna: Shadow of the Colossus Clone?

Looking at these new images can be viewed as the rpg Kizuna has something SOTC.

As you can see the bosses are Colossus, and to identify weaknesses use the wiimote

Not sure there has ever been a game that did not rip-off some aspect of another game. It's the entertainment industry, much like music and movies, people stick to what they know works in order to succeed. Some use game aspects as "inspiration", some just blatantly reproduce it, either way, in the end, it is all a relative copy/rip-off of something that came before it.

@Lyan : I can't think of any thing Shadow of the Colossus stole from any other game.
Also, not everything is steeling, take Splinter Cell and Metal Gear for an example, it's no secret SP was made to be the Xbox's MGS, even its developers said so, but, when you really look at both games SP wasn't an MGS clone, they just took the concept of sneaking and made a completely different game, the same goes for Forza & GT, Mario & Sonic, Resident Evil & Silent Hill...

On the other hand, a game like Ghost Rider was complete rip off from both GOW and DMC, they even stole the controls layout.

no my friend. the battles in WKC are totally different because the character transforms himself into a giant with some kind of cool armor like "ultraman" to fight against another giant face to face. in kizuna the guy is actually running on the arm of the giant in his normal stature exactly like Shadow of the Colossus.

how many games do you know that you need to climb a giant to attack his weak spot?

Years ago, while writing an essay on Shadow of the Colossus, I found that it was too early to determine what kind of influence the game would have over future projects. I remember saying it wouldn't take long before Colossus' impact would be felt. And now this.

I think Kizuna might be aiming for the alternative game which many suggested after playing Shadow of the Colossus: those who weren't pleased with the game not having RPG elements or the usual NPC interactions. Well, one thing is to rip off a musical videoclip, or a summer popcorn movie: this is an attempt to simplify Shadow of the Colossus, a complex game by rights, for the videogame masses. The sort of plagiarism seen so far is not welcome in my point of view and it is very prejudicial for the videogames industry.

I agree with homages, as long and they're dissimulate and clever. This sort of thing should be banned by law, as it is an attack to the artistic integrity of what is probably the best videogame ever created. Where's the respect?

SoTC might have been one of the best games ever. However The one who made SoTC did not made up "big bosses" there were plenty of others out there. He must have got his idea's from other games/stories too

The only thing SoTC did right, if we were to talk about huge bosses, was the whole physic based system where you climb onto these huge monsters.

SoTC was an Amazing game but to pretend it was the first and should be the only one having such concept?
Then lets destroy all those Platformers and big adventures, all those FF "rip-offs" so on and on.

I oknow SoTC was a great game but damn you guys are stretching it.

You're mistaking my written opinion for someone else's, I’m sorry.

I'm talking about the aesthetics being duplicated to an extent that the original source of the material becomes evident instead of subtly implied. These values should be protected as they are the integral part of a team's artistic vision, in this case Team Ico’s.

It's not like Duchamp painting a moustache on Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, and even that had a meaning in the given context: this is called replicating, a marketing maneuver that already produces results - this game is hitting front pages.

See ICO, for instance: you can play it all along and unless you've played Chahi's Another World you won't notice the similarities. But Ico pays homage to Another World in a sharp and elegant way, unlike the blatant rip-off that can be seen in these scanned images. I guess that’s the difference between creating and recreating, between talented artists and amateurs.

Again, it was acceptable in this industry twenty or thirty years ago, when Radarscope was Nintendo's answer to Space Invaders. Today videogames must undergo a process of maturation and break up with these old habits: there are indeed game genres, and inspiring games that drive the industry. It’s not the big bosses: it’s the mechanics, the textures, colors and positioning of the characters that isn’t original and whose source is only too evident.

If you feel comfortable with this then go ahead and enjoy it. I for one can’t stand the sight of it, out of spite for SOTC and what it represents in this ortherwise childish industry.

I don't really get the Shadow of the Colossus argument. It'd be nice if this linked to an actual article and not a forum post that isn't the first post in the thread or even in English. Since the source material is incomprehensible, the only conclusion I can draw is that the comparison to SotC is simply "SotC had huge bosses; Kizuna has huge bosses; thus Kizuna game is a SotC clone."

Considering we have very little information on this game and most of that information, aside from the scope of the boss battles, bears no resemblance to SotC at all, I'd say it's a bit presumptuous to call it a "Shadow of the Colossus Clone."

To be fair, we *are* dealing with a marriage of the action genre and the role playing genre, which are probably the most creatively bankrupt genres in all of videogaming.

Someone once described to me the Final Fantasy series thus:

- Planet in peril
- Level up!
- Young hero without a past
- Level up!
- Rebels gather around the hero
- Level up!
- Forces of old and evil transform themselves
- Level up!
- Planet grieves, still in peril
- Level up!
- Crystals are the key
- Level up!
- Ride a chicken to find a sword
- Level up!
- Antagonist wants to end the world
- Level up!
- Antagonist has no past
- Level up!
- Antagonist and hero are connected
- Level up!
- Get the big ship, and the crew together
- Level up!
- Big dragon in a cave needs dealing with
- Level up!
- Card game / coin game / ball game
- Level up!
- Antagonist brings the pain
- Level up!
- Kill all six layers of the Antagonist
- 1 hour 34 minutes of cut scene.

And with the exception of the "Ride a chicken to find a sword" deal, that pretty much describes every major role-playing game ever -- It's not *necessarily* a bad thing that they have commonalities, especially if those are traits that people enjoy. That's why we have terms like "staples of the genre."

The action RPG genre has its staples too, like "Giant bosses", "Puzzles", "Giant bosses with puzzle aspects", and a slightly less absurd number of cutscenes.

Is it a bad thing that these games share things in common? I suppose it is if you're averse to playing any game with a similarity to another game. Although I'd also feel some pity for that mindset, in that it would preclude one from enjoying pretty much any game that's part of a series that doesn't evolve the series to a point where it's unrecognizeable.

If I recall correctly, Shadow of the Colossus was revered, not for creating staples but for how it took those staples, scaled everything back, and used those staples to tell its story.

The concepts of battling giant puzzle bosses, riding a horse, and a hero fighting to save a damsel in distress are either elements that were borrowed from elsewhere, or originated in Shadow of the Colossus. The latter two of those are elements that have examples going back hundreds of years in human literature, so you're already on shakey ground if you want to argue that the game's critical acclaim is due to what it "invented."

Kizuna should sell well in Japan, if only because they don't have Western sentiments about games that follow conventions.
