If There’s No New PS4 At E3, Microsoft Would Be Smart To Show Their New Xbox One At E3

ThisGenGaming says "You’ve heard the news by now, Sony will not be showcasing it’s half-gen console, codenamed Neo, at this years E3. I’m all for holding off until the product is ready, after all the last thing we want is to see an incomplete build, but it’s also a bit odd that Sony seems so dismissive about showcasing what this half-gen can and will do. Things get a little more complicated as well, since this can actually open the door for Microsoft to create some much needed hype for their half-console as well."

"You’ve heard the news by now, Sony will not be showcasing it’s half-gen console, codenamed Neo, at this years E3"

That's not news, it's rumour.

CoNn3r_B3308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

I'm wondering if this "Scorpio" has actually been confirmed as well because it doesn't sound real. I mean, a console that is significantly more powerful than the Xbox One would cost way too much for the average console buyer.

ninsigma3308d ago

Even though it's highly likely there are some sort of new devices coming out, nothing has been confirmed yet and all these sites acting is if we have concrete proof is getting stupid.

CoNn3r_B3308d ago

@ninsigma It's getting really hard to tell the difference between news and rumours these days, it's mostly just wish fulfillment but I for one am happy with my consoles and while I wouldn't mind a tech upgrade but I'm not going to drop another £400 or more when I've only had mine for 3 years.

ninsigma3308d ago

Seems like it's all the same to "journalists" lol

I don't mind the upgrades myself as long as base model owners aren't left behind. Happy with mine as well but that's not to say I won't upgrade. I need to actually see it first before making a decision. Assuming it's minimal, which it likely will be, I'll probably just stick with what I have.

slate913308d ago

"A console that is significantly more powerful than the xbox one would cost way too much for the average console buyer."

They said the same thing about the elite controller and they couldnt keep it in stock. Phil has said with the notice of demand on the elite controller they realize people are willing to pay for high quality items.
Manufacture the $700 console in a reserved fashion like the controller and they will be fine.

Jburr943308d ago

I think there is a new Xbox on the horizon, but the specs just beg for skepticism. Sounds too good to be true.

darthv723308d ago

it's rumored specs make it more of a 9th gen contender than an upgraded XB1. Which is why, if anything, MS will have a slimmed down XB1 and talk about new and expanded features between the W10 / xbox ecosystem. Scorpio is such a beast that it just fits more into competition with NX for the 9th gen on the horizon.

Neo seems more of a 32X approach (and I happen to like the 32x) of improving the PS4 platform but not really required and more of a stopgap before their full on 9th gen system... PS5 (or whatever it may be called)

Omnislashver363308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

Actually look at AMD's new r480... 5.5 TFLOPS at $199. It's very possible X1 Scorpio will be affordable at 6 TFLOPS. Infact, I wouldn't be surprised if PS4 NEO was 6 TFLOPS and $500. Sony is always holding out crucial console info until the last minute.

JoeDG3308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

The new 5.5 tf 480 with 8 gb cost 229$ u can be sure the price for ms will be more like 140-150 $ with a order of some millions of them..
499 for a console with 6 tf will not be a problem in 2017

Eonjay3308d ago

No, it would not be smart for them to do this if it doesn't release until Fall 2017. How do you get people to continue to buy the Xbox One for the next year and a half?

rainslacker3308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

Problem is, at least now, that despite all these rumor articles, we really have no actual confirmation, either from the companies themselves, or from reliable, known sources. There aren't even any secondary evidence things that can point to it being true, like FCC filings, UL listings, sourcing leaks, or patent listings. There is a distinct lack of all these journalist claiming them to be true, actually seeking out some tangible proof....which is kind of counter to how juicy rumors actually do have that happen. With the Xbox One DRM rumors, before it was confirmed, many journalists were asking people who could answer. They were denied answers, but at least they were asking. The only reason to not be asking right now, is because they know it's not real....which is why most of the major sites are only willing to report that others are reporting the rumor, and aren't willing to put their reputation on the line by stating they have verified sources.

nix3308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

Well we know what happened two years back - Sony: "We don't have new console on the works. We won't show until MS shows theirs."

*about a month later shows teaser of new console coming*

MS gets caught sleeping, shows console that looks like a VCR.

I don't think MS are ever going to believe Sony after that incident. It has literally cost them this generation.

And in any case MS' presentation is before Sony's.

AngelicIceDiamond3308d ago

If MS shows off their console the media would hate it and say they're screwing customers. I have a feeling it wouldn't bold well for MS.

MyDietEqualsGames3308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

Probably because there's not enough digging for information like a real, bona fide journalist.

The gaming news outlets basically piggyback off one another and rehash the same news, using their own take on how to present it to you.

That is why many of these sites sound the same. Although, some sites do have scoops or first looks that all or many others don't, that too falls under piggybacking.

@Slate91

Controllers, even the Elite, which I did buy to use on PC, aren't nearly as complex to design and manufacture as a console and it's parts. Consoles use more precious metals too, consider that and logistics, weight and such.

FITgamer3308d ago

Not only that, but Microsoft's event is before Sony. So they won't know until after they've already had their show.

ninsigma3308d ago

That's what my original comment was gonna say but I just couldn't get past the "news" line xD

freshslicepizza3308d ago

microsoft needs to step back and let sony show their goods first. test the reaction from fans for coming out with new hardware and also make tweaks and trump anything sony shows.

stuna13308d ago

Not only that Microsofts conference is before Sonys conference.

blackblades3308d ago

Instead of calling this site news 4 gamers it's more like rumors 4 gamers.

JackBNimble3307d ago

So true , where is all the real news anyway ?

If there is any truth to these rumors , then I am sure it's all about UHD and 4k blu-ray with a slight power boost . Sony just started to profit off the ps4, so an upgrade would only make sense if they are trying to push the new 4k blu-ray format. I wouldn't doubt if MS is going to do the exact samething as Sony so the don't get left even further behind.

rainslacker3308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

In lieu of news, please accept this rumors as factual.

Anyhow, on topic

No, MS would not be smart to show off their new Xbox if Sony doesn't. The last thing MS needs is to stall Xbox sales, and take away any press from whatever else it has to announce. A new console, even though they've been rumored for a while now, will be all that's talked about at the show, and I have a feeling the second these things are revealed as factual, and details given, is the point where we really see the people who are against it come out of the woodworks to voice their opinion.

MS, at this point in time, does not need to appear unsure of the Xbox console, and a new console announced in less than 3 years after the old, is going to cause them all sorts of perception problems going forward, regardless of if Sony does it too, because Sony will have it's own perception problems to deal with.

For all the faults I may attribute MS having, one thing I will say about them is that they do present their products with confidence, and only back away from things when there is just nowhere else for it to go. The X1 isn't at that point yet where MS has to give up on it, or make it the lesser of two options in a vain attempt to try and be more relevant in the console market.

MS would be much better off just toughing it out this gen, building their own game portfolio that will actually attract more buyers who aren't into Xbox, than they would in hoping to sell more by just giving their current customers new hardware to purchase. Then when next gen finally does come around, they'll be in a better position to sell the system on the games themselves. That's the one thing that MS hasn't tried to replicate from Sony, and maybe it's time they actually take notice, and if they have noticed(as Phil seemed to imply), maybe they should do something about it.

ninsigma3308d ago

I agree with you assuming they do release their console next year. If it's this year they may as well show it now xD
But yeah assuming the rumour is true, now would be a terrible time to show it off.

rainslacker3308d ago

About all I can do when making these comments is assume things.

In fact, any comment I make stipulating that they're real, or will release within a certain time, should always be considered assumption for the sake of brevity.

All anyone can do right now is assume things.

Fin_The_Human3308d ago

Wouldn't showing the Scorpio kill Sony's thunder with the Neo...I mean if all rumor specs are true then the Scorpio is more powerful than the Neo.

I'm sure Sony has it holstered. The reason they do the late show is so they can make adjustments. If Microsoft shows their new box then I'm sure Sony will add it into their presser even if they didn't want to.

Blastoise3308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

"I'm sure Sony has it holstered. The reason they do the late show is so they can make adjustments."

Any proof of that? I'm pretty sure these shows are planned weeks in advance, getting in touch with publishers, preparing guests, remembering lines, editting trailers ect.

I doubt they'd change anything in less than a day based on what Microsoft shows

opinionated3308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

Common sense. It's a trade show. They don't need to get in touch with publishers and guests to announce their own shit. Adding a reveal is nothing at all.

Why wouldn't they? If Microsoft is stealing headlines why wouldn't they add an extra 10 mins that they already have on the back burner? You act like its some kind of Broadway play that's rehearsed to perfection.

showtimefolks3308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

Blastoise

actually not. sony usually has a plan A and plan B show planned. so yes they have enough hours in between ms and their conference that they can add or subtract stuff

like stone said it's their product they can talk about it anytime they want.

it's common sense. i don't believe sony would have show FF7 remake, shenmue 3 and TLG in one conference but MS showed a lot so cony countered

they could have saved the last guardian for playstation event

Aenea3308d ago

Whoa there! This is an article that's spouting rumours about rumours as news and you ask Stonewall for proof??

Hilarious!

3308d ago
Jburr943308d ago

There's a 9 hour gap in between their conferences, Sony will make adjustments.

TheCommentator3308d ago

Blastoise, Sony already did that at least once when they launched the PS4. They changed their DRM policies from the same as MS to mocking them after the backlash. For those who say Sony wasn't going to do DRM, go back and look at interviews set before the PS4 launch and you'll find Sony skirting that issue every time it came up.

Ever heard of a backup plan? They'd just take out some of the filler and replace it with PS Neo. Don't worry though, MS won't show Scorpio this year at E3 because it's too far out.

3308d ago
TheCommentator3308d ago

Oh, I'm sorry Stardust you're right. If Kaz said stuff days AFTER the reveal that obviously means he was being honest during that interview... and also nullifies the times Sony was asked to elaborate on DRM but skirted the issue BEFORE the E3 reveal. That was my bad.

You're voting for Trump, right?

objdadon3308d ago

Uhhh, yes the very well can and will make adjustments if necessary as they did in 2013.

mkis0073308d ago

The commentator

They skirted the issue so they could use it as an impact moment at E3; there isn't always 1 answer to every question.

@elektranine
The Sony show does follow the Microsoft show.... How is that fantasy in any way?

Changing your entire platform in a few hours isn't the same as announcing a platform. What a stupid thing to say or even repeat. There is no comparison whatsoever. You Sony dudes sure do get anal about the dumbest shit. "They didn't add anything into the press conference! How dare you sir!"

rainslacker3308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

Sony has had their show in the evening, or between 4-6 for the past two decades. They started there, because back in the day, there were fewer conferences, and that was the only time they could get between Sega and Nintendo taking up the daytime shows, and the fact there was less press to go around, so they had to make sure everyone could get from one to the other in time to get it covered.

What adjustments can they really make of any significance? Maybe pull a trailer for another show at a later date. Maybe add a teaser or trailer for something. They can't change hardware specs, and are unlikely to have a major overhaul to whatever they have to announce on specs within the 4-1/2 hours between conferences. They may be able to change the price of a system, but Sony has already stated they wanted to be at the $400 price point before last years E3, so there was no change there.

@TheCommentator

If they changed DRM policies, then that was likely decided before the conferences were held. Backlash was well before the conferences, and regardless of if MS kept them or not, Sony would have reacted to that backlash before the show. At most, they may have changed how they announced the news, but I doubt they made such a big business decision in the 4-5 hours between shows. There is more to such decisions than just stating, "yeah, we're not going to do that".

They did make that game sharing video after MS conference though.

opinionated3308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

It's always been strategic then. Those problems aren't around anymore and they still benefit from the late show.

They can make any adjustments they want. There is enough time to do so. Significance is relevant, the entire point of e3 is to swarm the press with information. They are fighting for people's attention. All I'm saying is that Sony can easily add in a neo reveal or a game trailer or anything that they might be saving for Tokyo game show or the German one (I forget). If Microsoft completely dominated discussion with their presser with Scorpio or 299 price point then Sony could easily make adjustments to match or undercut. These Sony nerds are acting like that is unheard of.

rainslacker3308d ago (Edited 3308d ago )

Dunno about strategic. More like traditional.

I'd say they benefit from the late show, just because they get the last word in on the day. I don't know if they plan it like that, but if you had a company, wouldn't you also want to be in that position?

It does run the risk that if another company has a great showing, that their own can look rather boring. Like in 2014 for instance. Sony didn't have a great show in comparison to MS, and people were expecting more because MS mostly delivered.

Sure, any company can make adjustments at any time. But going in, they're going to plan on contingencies. It's not like you can just throw this stuff up at the last minute, or an few hours ahead of time without any planning. Maybe small things or minor adjustments. E3 takes months to plan. At best, they can maybe pull a trailer, or add one in, and maybe pull announcement of hardware for a later date. But making significant changes that weren't planned for is probably not going to happen that often. When it comes to hardware, about all they can change is if, or how, they present the info, and those contingencies will be planned ahead of time.

You make it out that Sony is somehow just a reactionary company, that changes what it's going to do at the last minute because of some unknown. That's not how these companies work. Sony has hardly been reactionary at all this gen. Quite the opposite really, where they seem to be setting the entire tone, and others are trying to keep up. So what possibly would they have to change that would make a difference?

You act like you have some vast understanding of how companies work, or how they approach their press events. yet you just seem like an idiot....which is further bolstered by your general comment history. You think companies change stuff super quick? MS could have easily "flipped the switch" after their E3 conference after Sony's E3 2013 given the reaction it got. But it took time to actually get that approved, and that approval happened weeks after E3. So, I reiterate, you're just grasping at straws. Significance is key, because minor changes are made to conferences all the time. That doesn't always mean it's reactionary, just that for the time the conference comes around, it's deemed that it should be moved to another time.

opinionated3308d ago

Traditionally strategic.

Who wouldn't want the last word of the day and the ability to counter? That's my point.

When did I say they were changing anything major? Since when is "making adjustments" and announcing new hardware a complete overhaul on the entire presser? "Has it holstered" is a contingency, not improv. You're not telling me something I don't know or countering anything I've said. The only one sounding like an idiot is you parroting these fools. I thought you were one of the good ones rain! Don't follow these goobers.

"What could they possibly change that would make a difference? THE NEO DUMMY! that's what the fucking topic is about lmao. If Microsoft showed the Scorpio then I think they would unholster the neo as a backup(if they didn't plan to already). This entire topic is purely hypothetical speculation and rumor and you are calling me straw man? Piss off wanker.

I'm not trying to make it sound like anything, it's the truth. Since when do you need vast knowledge of corporations to know that every corporation is reactionary. It's not just Sony, I don't know why you morons think I'm trashing them. Microsoft reacted to neo with Scorpio. Sony reacted to oculus with PSVR. Just because they make last minute changes to announce something it doesn't mean they put their dick in the wind to see what's blowing. I never said that once.

IWentBrokeForGaming3308d ago

If half gen console don't sound stupid to you, you're part of this problem that'll let more stupid gaming practices like this... To exist!

Yea, this gathering actually sounds like a good time to reveal a remaster PS5/XBox + Switch 2 release. It could be both!

Man, I moved from the Tampa area a bit over 10 years ago, would have loved to be there for this regardless. Even if it's just a gathering of the actors. But this Fall/Holiday season does sound like a good time for a remaster.

MajorLazer8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Remaster? It just needs a 4K60 patch, no need to remaster anything. Gta 4 needs a remaster.
