Fallout 3 vs. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

With the first hands-on sessions with the highly controversial Fallout 3 confirmed for this weekend's Penny Arcade Expo, gameplayer has written an interesting article in preparation. They've done an extensive analysis of the flaws of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - the previous game by developer Bethesda - an exposed how they will be inexcusable in the third release in the cult Fallout series. Essential reading for those wary of the resurrection of the Fallout series in the hands of a new developer.

"When you're stepping up to the plate to make a sequel to a game that constantly finds itself in Top 100 games lists all over the globe, you want to make damn sure that you've got big enough balls for the job. In a perfect world we'd just give the job to the original developers, but unfortunately bankruptcy swallowed up Interplay Entertainment and Black Isle Studios - the developers of both Fallout games - several years ago. With the studio left in disarray, the Fallout name was put up to the highest bidder, resulting in a million dollar deal with Bethesda Softworks for the licence."

Oblivion will still be king when all is said and done.

94 on Metacritic.Fat chance Fallout

Chuck Norris6149d ago

Fallout 3 has a very good chance of beating out Oblivion.

Idonthatejustcreate6149d ago (Edited 6149d ago )

- The characters are much better in fallout 3 but they move just like in olivion this is a big annoyance to me.

- Textures are very bad at some places in Fallout 3. I think it's because of the DVD9 storage issue but who knows? Maybe lasy developers...

- The size of Fallout 3's map is smaller than oblivion. This is a big let down for me. I was hoping for the size equal or almost as big as north America, but it's like half of DC. That's what I've seen anyhow.

- No multiplayer or co-op. But I guess it has it's up and downs. I don't want to have a gimped story just because another player has to fit in it.

These are all the issues I can think of on Fallout 3. Still Fallout 3 will break some ground in the gaming department so I can garantee that I will still buy it day 1.

But Morrowwind still is king to me.

ThanatosDMC6149d ago

Is Morrowind really that good? I was thinking of buying it in Fry's. It's just $20 now.

Bob Dole6149d ago (Edited 6149d ago )

How can you say Oblivion is the best of the two when you've (Bob Dole's assuming) never played Fallout 3?

SixTwoTwo6149d ago (Edited 6149d ago )

Morrowind >>> Oblivion

Thanatos if you don't mind 6 year old graphics then you should definitely pick up Morrowind. It pwns Oblivion so hard.

Also if your getting the PC version I suggest you hunt down the Merged Morrowind Mod Megapack. 1.5GB's of modded goodness ;)

ThanatosDMC6149d ago

Yeah, i'll buy it today then. I think the merge pack you're talking about is the one with the big box. I'm not sure but i think that's the one with all the expansions. It's only $20 so that outta be cheap enough. Thanks.

Fallout 1 and 2.

Screw it up Bethesda and die

Chuck Norris6149d ago (Edited 6149d ago )

The author pointed out the most glaring flaws in Oblivion such as reusing textures, repetitive gameplay, and poor AI. Bethesda will most likely fix those flaws in Fallout 3 but I'd be surprised if they can pull it all off with only 7GB of space. Regardless, I'll still be buying the game when it comes out.

SlappingOysters6149d ago

Is that games like Mass Effect have made such a more natural speech system come into RPGs that what was seen in Oblivion. Yet Fallout 3 character interaction occers in the Obliviion fashion. This annoys me a lot.

Bob Dole6149d ago

The dialogue and speech in the original Fallout games were just as good as Mass Effect's IBD'sO.

Captain Tuttle6149d ago

I was really disappointed with the similarities between the speech between Oblivion and Fallout 3...so stiff and lifeless. It really does look like Oblivion with guns.

Give us FO3 with all the dlc remastered like ESO. Load times faster, quality of life improvements, gun play improvements

I believe it shouldn't just be graphical they should make improvements where they can to make the game better. A simple face lift isn't what's needed

ZeekQuattro67d ago

Still my favorite one. I remember getting a digital copy of FO3 when I got FO4(XBO). It was nice to finally play a stable version of the game. Then when I got a Series S it was an even better expierence. Quick resume and FPS boost made it feel like a whole new game. Updated gunplay would be very welcome though. One of the few things FO4 did better.

Fallout 3 Remaster is coming after Oblivion Remastered, but "it'll be a while" until we see it

The rumoured Fallout 3 Remaster is still in development, but it will be years until fans get to play it on new platforms.

New Vegas and Morrowind should have been first!

Christopher75d ago

Fairly certain we all know that New Vegas isn't getting anything because it's not a Bethesda developed game.

OMGitzThatGuy75d ago

MS owns both devs, if they want it, a 3rd party will make it.

Christopher75d ago

***MS owns both devs, if they want it, a 3rd party will make it. ***

I think the issue is that it's not a Bethesda developed game, not that MS owns both. This is more about Todd.

RaidenBlack75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

Yep ... Todd doesn't like getting bettered within his own IP scope.
I still think of the Elder Scrolls spin-off Obsidian pitched similar to New Vegas, but Todd rejected.

RaidenBlack75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

Replayed NV more than FO3 ... so I appreciate the FO3 remaster more.
For NV, I'd much prefer a sequel or a spinoff from Obsidian.

FTLmaster75d ago

Got a soft spot for Fallout 3, so I'd be down to play this.

-Foxtrot75d ago

It's crazy New Vegas wasn't worked on first to launch alongside Fallout Season 2.

They could have added all the cut content they had planned but didn't have enough development time to add, possibly even expand on it a little more. For example, have the Vegas strip as one big hub over being chopped into smaller sections we have to keep loading into.

neutralgamer199275d ago

Would love a complete remake or sequel with enough resources

Abnor_Mal75d ago

The only Fallout game I’ve played, PS3 had to keep stopping every few minutes to save. Next thing I knew the credits were rolling and I never did any side quest. I never replayed the game because of all the bugs the game had.

Yui_Suzumiya75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

I've played Fallout 3 more than any game. I lost count many years ago of how many times I finished it. It was my first Platinum trophy. But yeah, it was buggy on PS3 at launch before it got properly patched.

anast75d ago

They are only remaking their games that have been streamlined.
