Witcher 3 is way harder ,.. because combat and movement barely works,... that is why,.. Good thing there are xp glitches working still so you can brute force it with over-leveling to insane amount

Witcher 3 even on deathmarch is a joke. I was killing ??? level enemies from the jump. Granted, i had to wipe for a half hour ...

That said, the souls series is very manageable. All games today are. However, some of the mechanics in the souls series are infuriating. Like when I killed Eingyi with arrows from a distance. I was a pyromancer so that was upsetting.

Also, that mother f***er yurt killed all my NPCs on my first playthroigh of demon's souls.

These mechanics are very foreign to some people and can easily turn them off from the games. No hand holding, if you will.

No. Lots of casuals who dont know how to play souls are pretentious.

Actually hardcore players add layers of difficulty to themselves when playing the game. Like not leveling or no shield or dagger only...etc.

Ninja Gaiden is one of my all time favorite games. All of them, but specifically the modern ones. Is it possible to enjoy dark souls? Should I even try? I just know I'll be comparing dark souls to Gaiden the whole time I play, which isn't fair, but so many people compare them. Aside from the combat, I'm worried about too much RPG elements.

Good list. A load of the NES and SNES era games could be classed as "harder", or at least more unforgiving, than the Souls games. Hell, Dark Souls III isn't even the toughest Souls game!

Right, unforgiving is true. Checkpoints weren't a thing during those times. Yes, there was a lot of timing issues, memorizing levels, etc. but if there was checkpoints or more lives, there would have been a lot less broken controllers I think.

Ninja Gaiden is not more difficult to Dark Souls 3, I've beaten both. I've beaten Ninja Gaiden Black at least 3 times. Master Ninja mode doesn't count and is ridiculous. Also, it's sort of unfair to compare Dark Souls 3 to old school 2d games IMO

Ninja Gaiden is much, much faster paced than any Souls game. Souls games can almost feel like a puzzle at times, I did have to employ some room clearing strategies in Ninja Gaiden, but it's definitely a little more twitch and not quite as much strategy. The controls in NGB seem less refined to me, but that is at least partially due to the speed of the game and some of the difficult combos. Ninja Gaiden Black was an almost near perfect game though, I just think that sometimes the speed couldn't match the strategy, especially with some of the platforming. Dark Souls is also a hell of a lot less platforming and more slower-paced medieval combat. NGB plays like a fighting-platformer RPG. In terms of combat, souls is more like Bushido Blade in terms of pacing and strategy and NGB is like Virtua Fighter/Soul Calibur.

I think a lot of people that played Dark Souls think it's easier than the rest of the series, because they've just gotten better (I'm not saying it's harder than the rest necessarily). I beat Demon Souls and it may be a bit harder than Dark Souls 3 (partially because of game mechanics); I used to solo most of my bosses, but with Souls 3 playthrough I ended up summoning on some of them to get through the game faster.

Dark Souls and Ninja Gaiden Black have some crossover in the areas that make them difficult, but overall I feel that the difficulty in each game is caused by some differing factors.

Chess against either Komodo or Stockfish is probably harder than any other game. Even the very best players in the world can't beat them on even terms.

Making a game hard is the easiest thing in the world for a developer. I could go design a browser based game right now that would be stupidly difficult to beat with only one way to finish it. Does that make it good? Nope (unless you are a glutton for punishment who enjoying stressing out in games, which I suspect many souls players are).

However creating a game with engaging gameplay and a beautifully told story is where real talent is needed. The difficulty of a game is the least important, as people in general just want to have fun and be entertained. That doesn't mean all games should be super easy, but there is a balance that takes expert refinement to nail down so something can be challenging, but not ridiculously so.

Have to disagree. Having a Dark Souls boss that strikes through your block and forces you to just roll is good game design? Having an enemy in any game where you fight but just put up their damage output is good? Confused by what you think of as good and bad game design

I guess you haven't played many or any action games at all if you seriously believe a boss will never break your blocks or force you to try things you didn't before. Off the top of my head every action game I've played does this.

Whatever soul players say that they only like this game because of it's difficulty is selling the game really short. It's not about being the most difficult. It's just about naturally being challenging. On top of that there is the amazing combat physics, the immersive world design, the vague and compelling lore, and so on and so forth. I don't care if other games are harder, they also have to beat dark souls in all these categories as well to truly be a superior game.

If you were raised during the NES days then you know what hard games are. Ghosts N Goblims, Ninja Gaiden (NES), Contra without the extra lives code, Battletoads... The list goes on. Back in the day games were BRUTAL and some games only a handful of people could beat them. Now the hardest game is still beatable.

I dont remember Souls players ever saying its the hardest game ever. Anyone who is experienced with the series knows that difficulty is a very small part of what makes these games great.

As for the people saying DKS III is super easy, how many phantoms did you summon for each boss fight?

There's a difference between difficult and unforgiving. Dark Souls is unforgiving, but manageable, and still enjoyable. Some games are just hard for no reason. I played Knack on the hardest difficulty and it was tough, for no reason. The same goes for Diablo. Crank up the difficulty and it just raises enemy health and damage making it take forever to kill scrubby enemies even. Dark Souls is difficulty done right.
