PS4 vs Xbox One vs Wii U Global Lifetime Sales - April 2016 Update

VGChartz' William D'Angelo writes: "Looking at the total sales of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U in April 2016 shows how the PlayStation 4 has continued to grow its lead over the Xbox One and Wii U, outselling both of them combined. The Xbox One in turn continues to increase its lead over the Wii U.

The PlayStation 4 passed the 40 million mark and the Xbox One passed the 21 million mark. The PS4 has sold 40.59 million units lifetime, the Xbox One 21.06 million units, and the Wii U 12.92 million units.

Taking a look at the marketshare, the PlayStation 4 tops the other two platforms combined. The PlayStation 4 has 54 percent market share, the Xbox One sits at 28 percent, and the Wii U 18 percent.

The Wii U is a part of the 8th gen, though, so logically it should be mentioned even if it is a distant third.

In terms of technology, Wii U is really a part of the 7th generation, so it should be compared to the 360 and PS3. There are only two 8th generation consoles, the PS4 and XB1.

Was a few months ago, but yeah. however, he said he was only guessing, or implied it was an estimate. I'd imagine he's about as close as VGChartz is with their guesses. I think Sony had something about shipping 40 million recently, but can't remember the details.

Xbox numbers seem high, they were somewhere around 19 mil at the beginning of the year and have sold around 800k in the first 4 months NPD.. rest of the world have been abysmal so no way they get another 1.2 mil from them.. chartz always over guestimates in Xbox favor.

Just a question, what do any of us gain if MS stops making consoles? Nintendo stopping consoles is maybe the only one that benefits owners of other consoles cause they would presumably develop for all platforms. But if either of the other (Sony or MS) hypothetically stopped the one left would have no competition, no one to push them, no one to keep them in check. Competition benefits consumers that's just basic business knowledge. Sony benefited from MS horrible console launch, everyone wanted to work with them not MS that benefited consumers. MS had to ditch their media stuff and focus hard on games (as it should be) to try and win people back, which has benefited consumers. So I'll ask my original question again, if anyone even takes the time to read before they disagree, what does MS stopping console production do for us?
