Disney Infinity Franchise Cancelled – 300 Workers Laid Off

Over the last several years the “Toys to Life” market has lead to many our favourite video game and popular media icons being reimagined in small plastic form. First came Activision’s Skylanders in 2011 then followed by the original Disney Infinity in January 2013. Nintendo jumped on board the plastic bandwagon with their line of amiibo figures in June 2014.

Disney was thought to be releasing their fourth iteration tentatively titled Disney Infinity 4.0 later this year. Despite owning major franchises such Marvel and newly acquired mega license Star Wars it seems that slow sales has resulted in the Mickey Mouse company pulling the plug on the series all together. The cancellation has resulted in a $147 million charge back in the Walt Disney Company's Q2 2016 earnings. The announcement was made during Disney's quarterly earnings call as reported by CNBC. Reports also indicate that the cancellation of the franchise signals Disney’s exit out of the self-publishing game market.
