Why did Sunset Overdrive fail on Launch?

Pixelcheat:
How would I describe 'Sunset Overdrive'? As the love child of 'Infamous' and 'Splatoon', but it identifies more with it's cool uncle 'Saint's Row''s Rock 'n' Roll lifestyle which causes 'Sunset Overdrive' some serious teenage angst. And I don't at all mean that in a bad way. The combination of the gaming and humorous elements that made the games I've listed makes playing 'Sunset Overdrive' a great way to spend some time.

For me, it tried too hard to look "cool" which made it look like it was aimed purely at teenagers. The gameplay looked good but with so many great games coming out in the same sort of period as Sunset Overdrive, it was easy to pass on it.

headblackman3287d ago

cool wasn't what they were going with. fun was what the target was. that's insomniac's trademark. if you're familiar with their games, you'd know that.

pompombrum3287d ago

Doesn't really matter that fun was their target when the game gives off the impression that it was aimed at teenagers. Also as primarily an Xbox gamer (back then) how would I be familiar with Insomanic's work? The last game I played by them was Spyro over 16 years ago.

nix3287d ago

I agree with Breeze. When i first saw the trailer i immediately knew what kind of game this was going to be. Exaggerated action sequences, pop up style, cool looking weapons moves but man it just didn't feel or seem right. Somethings just didn't click. I wanted the game to do well considering it's from one of my favourite devs.

Also i partly blame Xbox community. They really don't care about these kinds of games outside of fps/racing games. It's a double edge sword for devs and MS. They want to bring in new exclusive IPs but the crowd just don't buy it and devs shy away after burning themselves.

badz1493286d ago

@aiBreeze

If you're complaining about the design choice Insomniac made with SSOD, you don't really know Insomniac well. Can't really blame you if you've been exclusively gaming on the Xbox previously, they were PS exclusive dev. But hey, Halo and Gears bore me to death too, because people have preferences. So, no biggie.

SSOD is in and out Insomniac written all over it, they have a unique feels to their games and that's not a bad thing at all. Reviewers love the game as reflected by the glowing reviews but it's too bad some of ya feels like the game doesn't suit your taste! The sales aren't strong and now some of you are already out downplaying the game despite the braggings when it first came out! I wonder why? Is it because Insomniac just recently came out with a masterpiece on the competing console and its reviews eclipsed your recently so called "best game on Xbone"? Just askin...

Over a year has passed and I think it's safe to assume SSOD is not gonna come the PS4 side, but I'm just glad MS is doing ng the game a service by offering it for GWG this month. Insomniac ought to have received a handsome amount for it to be the case and really, they deserve it! More people should play their games because Insomniac is one of the few still left out there, Independent and willing to take risks!

kraenk123287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

I agree 100%. No adult with some taste could have honestly liked that style and humour.

kraenk123287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

It honestly felt as if some MS marketing guy came to Insomniac and said "Hey dudes, our new console will be mainly marketed to the American youth..please make a game for it!"

jsin943287d ago

Because every game has to be serious and stick to tropes that are played out to death? I enjoyed SO very much.

porkChop3287d ago

Taste is subjective. There are many adults who love crude and vulgar humour. You do not speak for everyone, so you can't make a statement like that.

kraenk123287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

@porkChop

That's why I specified adults with taste.

@jsin94

Assuming you're born in 94 you definitely scratch the obvious target group.

Condemnedman3287d ago

don't talk crap I enjoyed it and I'm not some crude childish dude some game make it some don't.

Zeref3287d ago

Yet plenty of adults buy ratchet and clank. Which looks even more kiddy.

nix3287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

Zeref,

Looking kiddy is different from being kiddy. It may look cute but the language is pure adult. There's a vast difference between Dora the Explorer and South Park. Both look kiddy but the content/language is completely different.

AllRoundGamer363287d ago

funny considering saints row and gta to name a few are very successful games because of their vulgar and crude humor etc. also insomniac approached microsoft with their idea for a new game, do some research before typing rubbish.

DLConspiracy3287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

@kraenk

"It honestly felt as if some MS marketing guy came to Insomniac and said "Hey dudes, our new console will be mainly marketed to the American youth..please make a game for it!""

Yeah Insomniac didn't have any control of how they made the game. MS forced them at gunpoint to make it like it is. That's why insomniac wanted to own the IP instead of MS because they didn't make or enjoy the game.

I love how gamers are now hating on a beloved developer because it suits their arguement.

antikbaka3286d ago

lot's of adults were screaming like little girl with every new My Little Pony episode...you just never know

DrumBeat3286d ago (Edited 3286d ago )

"No adult with some taste."

I hate when people use the term 'taste' absolutely. Everyone has different tastes. 'Taste' isn't inferior or superior. It's what what one person likes and another person dislikes. The game is also full of adult humor.

Majister-Ludi3286d ago

Didn't seem to be properly advertised. I heard about it from others much after release. It's unfortunate because it one of the best games this gen. It's just straight up fun something a lot of games seem to have forgotten.

JackStraw3286d ago

Holy crap, dude, this is EXACTLY how I felt lol. My friend (26) LOVES this game. But I could not get into it for the life of me because I thought it was trying way too hard to be zany, or "cool" etc. I found myself getting annoyed playing the game.

Even though I did not like it, and I couldn't enjoy the game at all, it is a good game. It has a pretty cool traversal system, similar to Infamous, but I felt like it had a little more to it than Infamous, and it has an awesome weapon system along with the whole "amp" idea. The game itself has some pretty cool ideas, and they're actually done very well. But the premise and "feel" of the game just turned me away from it.

Bdub20003286d ago

I tried to play it, I just couldn't get in to it... The game tried too hard. And it reminded me way too much of Crazy Taxi.

GamingIVfun3285d ago

It's a mediocre game. I bought my Xbox One for this game, love the art style, gameplay and story not that great. copy and pastes from comment history since it got deleted the first time.

XBManiac3287d ago

Because Microsoft had no idea of what was Xbox One then and how to tell buyers what Sunset Overdrive is.

headblackman3287d ago

it failed because of peoples hatred for the x1 and loyalty to the ps4. those who didn't get it, wanted it, but wouldn't bring themselves to buy it because it meant that they would have to buy an x1 at the time and that brand loyalty created a bunch of lame excuses on why they couldn't or wouldn't buy it. but had it been a multiplat game that was also on the ps4, they would've ate it up and called it the next best thing. so in a nutshell, it was blind hatred and brand loyalty that hurt sunset overdrive. nothing more! nothing less!

Aloy-Boyfriend3287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

Then they aren't responsible for it but MS and Insomniacs.

You can't just expect loyal Insomniacs fans that have been supporting them since forever on PS to buy an xbox for one game. It's not like that. You don't make a game for the console I have, your loss. You don't get my money. Since when it is a requirement to own both consoles?

And that goes for every 1st party dev and 3rd party exclusives as well. But, Insomniac is the worst case here. Xbox one was well ovwr 5 million already when SS came. Why it didn't sell more. Xbox owners don't buy their exclusives? Ot could it be that Insomniac fans are not on xbox?

However, I am a fan of them and I bought and Xbox to play it and Titanfall as well. I almost got all the achievements. It was an awesome game.

Seriously this is the 2nd comment I see today of yet another xbox fans rambling about others having preferences or being "loyalist." just stop!!

insomniacs should have knowm that this game wasn't going to sell more millions because their fanbase isn't in Xbox. It's on PlayStation. It was new ground to them. The sequel might sell more tho, as they earned more fans

I just hope that the sequel is multiplat. Whatever disagreement Sony and Insomniacs had, I hope they've resolve it. They shouldn't leave out the fans that took them where they are now, and I mean PlayStation fans

TFJWM3287d ago

I don't there are any issues btw Sony and Insomniac, they did just do Rachet and Clank. SO wasn't on PS4 because Sony said they would fund the game if they get to own the IP. MS stepped up but now the sequel has the risk of going multiplat

Goldby3287d ago

i believe the reason was Insomniac wanted to keep the IP as their own and i believe Sony wanted it as a Sony game... dont hold me to that but i read something about how MS agreed to let them keep the IP as their own.

game4funz3287d ago

It seems he hit a nerve.your response is proof that what he said is completely true. I stead of being gamers people are more concerned about which box they support.

Aloy-Boyfriend3287d ago

He didn't hit any nerve. I'm calling out his lame excuse of accusing PS fans for the low sales. Why aren't xbox owners buying games?

You also missed the part where I said I bought and Xbox for this game. So I gave them my support, but not many owners did.

ScorpiusX3287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

Not getting into details , but couldn't this same statement be used by Developers also

"Since when it is a requirement to make a game for all Platforms"

makes no sense to over exceed one's budget to facilitate everyone right .

Aloy-Boyfriend3287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

That isn't a requirement either Castillo. It's not the point!

For Insomniac it was a big loss because their main fanbase is on PlayStation. Xbox was new ground to them. The low sales shouldn't be a surprise because of that. It would have succeded a lot if it was multiplat because old fans + new fans= more money and support.

Look at Bungie for instance! They gained new ground and lots of new fans on PlayStation with Destiny, while still pleasing their main fanbase.

sk8ofmnd3287d ago

The bottom line seems to be that sony have always risked more with new i.p's and such that the sony fan base is more used to these practices, and at ms not so much that when i new ip comes if its not stellar, the xb1 owners do not buy it. Because thats the community at whole at ms skipped on a game.

Hold_It3287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

This gen really is about brand loyalty though. We're on year three for this gen of consoles, and there's still not a killer app or a game that makes me absolutely have to own one of the three current gen consoles. The Dreamcast had more games worth playing in the short 1.5 years it got, than the X1, PS4, and Wii U have currently. That's not a jab at anyone's preference it's a jab at the gaming industry for not producing worthwhile content.

There hasn't been a single game this gen that has made me want to replay the "Story Mode" aspect of it. Maybe I'm finally getting burned out on video games, or maybe it might be that I've gone back recently and replayed games on Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PS3, Original Xbox, 360, Gamecube, PSP, GBA, SNES and looked at the mechanics, presentation, fun factor, gameplay, and am questioning why this gen doesn't feel like the 200% improvement over those games more than just graphics like I think it should be.

_-EDMIX-_3287d ago

Yeah I do not believe the install base has anything to do with the game not performing well, you have to factor that those people are fans of insomniac's titles it doesn't mean that they're going to purchase a game that's not similar to other titles they still buy from that company. You could still be a Ratchet & Clank fan and not necessarily a Resistance or Fuse or Sunset Overdrive fan etc.

Sunset Overdrive failed simply due to not being a good enough game the reality is if Destiny on PlayStation 4 is moving millions of units and Bungie is not as well known a developer to said Playstation fans in comparison to Microsoft and it shouldn't actually be moving massive units on that platform.

Not everyone is buying a game solely based on the developer in fact I would say them huge vast majority of gamers do not even know who developed their games. I've read many times on this very site people stating they are upset at a game and then state the publisher and many times the publisher did not create the game another team they own did.

For example somebody brought up glitches or issues in the division in reference to Assassin's Creed Unity yet completely disregarded or clearly didn't know that they're not even the same teams they're mistaken the persons who's publishing it for the persons who are who creating it.

Have we not heard people on this site getting angry at a game getting a remaster and stating they want new games only to fail to recognize that the team porting the actual game is not even the team that's making a brand new game? I've even heard people posting comments worrying about how Uncharted 4 is released because of the Uncharted remastered, completely disregarding that naughty dog is not even making the damn remaster.

So when you factor that even within this community that doesn't seem to be that much knowledge on who creates their games don't you think the vast majority have even less? That leads me to believe that most people are not buying a game just because of the team most people are buying it because they want to play the game...

That means even if you take the best Xbox developer and have them make a game on PlayStation it's still only going to sell based on if it's a good game ultimately people are not buying games just on team alone because we've seen many games fail by great teams and we've seen many games do successful but unknown teams.

_-EDMIX-_3287d ago

@Xik- I don't believe it's because their fan base existed on Playstation because Fuse failed and that title was also on Playstation, I believe it failed because it was a bad game. And I believe that Destiny was a great release for Bungie and sold because it actually was a legitimate solid game though I didn't care for that much its sales are very much warranted.

I honestly believe this boils down to Sunset Overdrive was not that good of a game it's as simple as that. Even the more successful Infamous series only sells slightly past two million the highest being I believe 3 million it's not an absolutely huge seller.

So coming from Insomniac it's actually not surprising that the game failed to meet certain sales expectations as once again Insomniac has always been hit-or-miss even with the resistance series which I personally like I've always felt that only really one title in that series was really good.

They're only very solid and stable titles they've ever made has been Ratchet & Clank series.

Ok...Why didn't Xbox owners support it then?

annoyedgamer3287d ago

They did but at the time there were not many...I was one of the fre X1 owners during year 1.

MasterCornholio3287d ago

Because most of Insomniac fans are on PlayStation.

iTechHeads3287d ago

Maybe because they don't want to play around with a penis-shaped shotgun?
The humor in Sunset Overdrive just isn't my thing. I got it free via Games with Gold. Played it a little and I doubt I'm ever going back. It's just not for me.

WeAreLegion3287d ago

Not true. I know tons of people who bought an Xbox One JUST to play Sunset Overdrive. I'm one of them!

ger23963287d ago

Apparently not many, or it would have sold better.

MeleeDamage3287d ago

Do you really think "brand loyalty" is the reason why Sunset Overdrive failed to perform to expectations?
I doubt people who own a PS4 would want to spend their money on a new console just to play THIS game.
In my opinion, it should have been multi-platform because sales would have been higher and you could probably expect a sequel, which doesn't seem likely at the moment.

Aloy-Boyfriend3287d ago

Not just in your opinion. It should have been a multiplat for the sole reason that Insomniac fans are on PlayStation. They left a big fanbasr behind and went to new ground. They shouldn't be surprised with the sales.

But I don't blame them entirely. From the reason they stated, it looked like Sony didn't want them to own the IP, and thus they went with Microsoft, who allowed them to keep it. That's one thing I never forgive Sony for. They shouldn't have denied them the IP to their long time partners, and as a result we ended up with no game at all for their greediness.

Why not released SS on PS4 under another name tho? Sunsent Overdrive: Off The Record or something. Insomniac own the IP. MS shouldn't be againts them getting more money and pleasing their main fanbase

Godmars2903287d ago

But then, as multiplatform, it wouldn't have gotten the money to be made. Insomniac didn't have it, Sony didn't want to give it to them as a 3rd party exclusive where MS only gave it to them on that condition.

_-EDMIX-_3287d ago

@xik- yes of course it should have released multi-platform but you have to factor that they didn't have the funding to do such a thing at the time.

Even in hindsight it's still would have been in my personal opinion a bad idea because it would have been even more money spent on a game that likely was not going to succeed. I honestly do not believe that the install base being Xbox is the reason why this game failed that doesn't really make much sense when you factor most Gamers don't know who makes their games.

Also Sony is correct to have those terms and conditions they're not going to publish and Market somebody else's games that won't help them in the long run. Sony is looking out for the support and success of the PlayStation brand in the long run and I think they don't believe it's fair to help funding and marketing of a title that is not going to help you years down the line as opposed to spending that money in a house with your own teams.

Mind you with the game inevitably failing they were actually correct to not even spend that money buying the IP you have to understand that Sony is still a business it doesn't actually matter that their longtime Partners at the ending of the day this is business it's not emotions or friendships or empathy or anything like that.

I truly believe Sony has no ode to a team that has been wholly independent. It is not a Sony team and I truly truly believe that they had no reason to fund and market a game that they have no ownership over, especially a new IP by a team that has been very questionable about making new IP's actually work.

I once again do not believe that fans of the team overall determine a game success or not as most don't even know who makes their games. if the game is good it will sell if the game is bad it is going to be met with negative receptiom.

It's literally that simple. Consider their last failed game fuse was multi-platform...

rainslacker3287d ago

I think their choices were limited in funding after Fuse failed to do much with a 3rd party publisher.

I respect that Insomniac wanted to keep the IP, and they went somewhere that allowed them to do that.

That being said, while Insomniac are really good devs overall, and do make good games overall, they've built their fan base on the Playstation console over a very long period of time. Multi-plat makes sense to keep the PS fans, and bring in new ones, but it's not always so cut and dry when a developer shops their own creations to other publishers.

MS took the chance, and gave Insomniac what they wanted to create the game.

As an Insomniac fan, it failed to live up to the standards which they have come to be known for. it was rather generic, low-brow, and nowhere near what I'd consider a Insomniac title, as it lacked any subtlety or actual wit. Fuse, despite it not being appealing due to the graphics changes, still had the Insomniac charm everywhere else, but SO was only Insomniac in graphics alone.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 3287d ago
InTheLab3287d ago

That's a horrible excuse for both the console and the game. How about this? The game was decent and secretly hid the best part about itself (amazing tower defense), in favor of campy humorless over the top characters that drug down an otherwise good game.

By the time I got to Fargarthia or whatever the faction is called, I'd had enough. Sometimes you go overboard with not taking yourself serious and this was a prime example.

vickers5003287d ago

Gameplay and graphics are great, story was cringeworthy and obnoxious. I have mixed feelings about the game.

Sparta073287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

@ headblack, sorry but that's the dumbest excuse I've ever heard... Brand loyalty made an exclusive fail on another console!? What? WTF did I just read?
PlayStation owners stop Xbox owners from supporting the game,, great got it.

Stereotypical_gamer3287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

Your crazy if you think that sunset overdrive was a system seller. Absolutely nothing to do with brand loyalty, unless your saying people who prefer Microsoft to Sony didn't want SO on there system it had nothing to do with brand loyalty.

WelkinCole3287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

WTH?. You expected PS fans that just bought a PS4 to buy the more expensive X1 just to play SO?.

Are you freaking serious?.

sk8ofmnd3287d ago

Yeah, i wont get an xb1 till either it slims down or a game for it is so compelling by gamers and critics alike that i can not ignore it. I was hoping qb was that game but as with everything im not certain about, i waited for the reviews.

On topic, my brother went xb1 this gen and liked it but i never got around to trying it. Seems very split down the middle. Unlike games like the witcher, dark souls 3, and the uncharted series.

dc13287d ago

So you are blaming PS4 and PS3 users for not buy an XBOX one to play an XBOX one exclusive?

Keep in mind, that Microsoft and Insomniac entered into an exclusive agreement because a) they thought that it would appeal to the projected XBOX One demographic and b) it would compile current (at the time) XBOX 360 and other console owners to purchase the XBOX One.

I won't begin to explain how many variables that you whitewashed.

However, in the end Insomniac and SSOD was impacted by consumerism. If the game or the platform can not compel folks to purchase it (let alone a fair percentage of the user base on it's exclusive console) then, the failure rest with them and them alone.

Hope this helps.

Doabarrelroll3287d ago

It failed because crybaby fanboys like you probably didn't support it. It has nothing to do with hatred. By your logic ALL exclusives then fail because an Xbox gamer could like UC but doesn't want to buy a ps4 for it, get over it. This new N4G is terrible because now idiots like you roam free

BiggerBoss3287d ago

"Fanboys" like him don't have to buy every shitty game that comes out. The game failed because it didn't appeal to the core Xbox audience.

DarXyde3287d ago (Edited 3287d ago )

...Or maybe spending $500 at the time to play a single $60 is far from being financially responsible.

If people didn't want an Xbox One to play one game, they probably weren't going to buy it.

This is an established idea and is the case for any console. If you don't like PlayStation, I wouldn't expect you to buy a console just to play Uncharted 4 either.

ninsigma3287d ago

So people should buy a whole console for one game?? Sso was part of the reason I got an x1 but I wouldn't have bought it if there wasn't a few other things I was interested in. No one is going to buy a whole new console when one game they're interested in comes along.

rainslacker3287d ago

I'm a pretty big fan of Insomniacs work in general, and I have to say that I wouldn't buy a console for any of their games. I'd buy their games for any console I may own, and often do though.

It had nothing to do with loyalty to PS keeping me away from Xbox, and in fact, SO was one of the games I did purchase when I got my X1 last year because I like the company so much.

But having played it, it was infantile, and while the game play was fun, the game itself was insufferable and nowhere near the quality of most of their other work. It had the insomniac style in graphics only, but the humor was lame, the game play nowhere near on par with their other work, and the actual style which denotes a Insomniac game completely nonexistent.

I'm going to point you to another game by Insomniac. Fuse.

When you can explain why that game tanked, despite being available everywhere, then maybe you'll understand why SO didn't do so well. Unless you believe Sony fans were so upset with Insomniac going multi-plat that they somehow managed to conspire on a mass scale to not care about the game. Fuse and SO had the same problem of just not being good enough games, and not having the things that people look for in Insomniac games. Fuse more so due to publisher interference, but nothing about SO made me think Insomniac deserved my support of the title.

hulk_bash19873286d ago

It "failed" because alot of Xbox One gamers didn't buy it (me not being one of them, love Insomniac, loved the game.). But what does it have to do with PS only gamers? That's like blaming a PS exclusive not selling well on the Xbox fanbase. It doesn't make sense.

1Victor3286d ago

@ headblacman it's the same as if destiny would be exclusive to PS4.
Would a average Xbox player buy a PS4 to play destiny from the maker of their beloved Halo?

headblackman3286d ago (Edited 3286d ago )

@1Victor

what is average in this hobby sir? but to answer your question on if an xbox fan would buy a ps4 for destiny? the answer to the question is yes! why??? bungie made destiny and xbox fans have known what bungie could do long before playstation fans have had a taste of their talent. so to buy a ps4 to keep playing a very good game that was developed by a very good, well known, and extremely familiar development group would be a no brainer.

Cacabunga301d ago

Wise decision, enough with old gen games already!!!

DarXyde300d ago

Sunset Overdrive was great...

I quite enjoyed the Demons' Souls remake too. I'm more or less begging for a Bloodborne sequel but would snap up a remake in a heartbeat.

Concertoine300d ago

I’d rather play an older unique game than a new Marvel game.

Im so blown out on Marvel, I can’t fathom how some people seem to have a bottomless appetite for it. A studio like Insomniac could do way better.

just_looken300d ago

Yep those poor devs are now a marvel sweat camp

This port and a quick pc patch to fix some bugs would have been a great idea i actualy forgot its not on ps5 you think it would have by now.

But hey they got like you said spiderman 2 pc port then spiderman 3 then spiderman collection with a wolverne/blade tossed in.

Amplitude300d ago

From everything we've seen, it's not like Insomniac is being forced to make Marvel games - it's clearly a good partnership that results in good games. They're still making Ratchet games anyway which is what really matters

Redemption-64300d ago

I have no idea why people like you keep making lies. Does it help you sleep at night? Where are you getting this information that they are either being forced or made into a Marvel camp? Sony approach Insomniac when they were independent to work on a Marvel IP and they picked Spider-Man. After the success of Spider-Man, it was Insomniac who pitched Wolverine to Sony/Marvel and was given the green light

This is new…it pretty much confirms it can happen eventually.

I thought Microsoft had publishing rights or something

Yes you are right. Microsoft allegedly has rights to the first game. Perhaps Microsoft wasted to sell it back to Sony in exchange for a port to Xbox Series. This would make the statement make more sense because I can't imagine that a port of this game even compares to the creation of Wolverine. So Microsoft probably requested a multiplat port.

gold_drake301d ago

yeh, the article says as much that MS does have publishing rights.

Profchaos301d ago

They do but Microsoft doesn't really care about the game they are considering Halo 1 for ps5 so this would be nothing

badz149301d ago

MS doesn't just have the publishing rights for SSoD, they also have publishing rights for the next 2 games in the franchise!

Zeke68300d ago

" The game was later pitched to various publishers, which rejected them because Insomniac demanded to retain ownership of the intellectual property. The project was later pitched to Microsoft Studios, which was eager to work with Insomniac. Microsoft allowed Insomniac to own the rights to the game"

Seems Insomniac own the rights after all...

badz149300d ago

@Zeke68

publishing rights is not the same as IP rights or ownership. for SSoD, Insomniac owns the IP, MS owns the publishing rights. just like Sony with Spider-man. Sony only owns the publishing rights to the movies and games but the IP is still owned by Marvel/Disney.

Zeke68300d ago

See my comment below. When Insomniac left M$ they let Microsoft keep their publishing rights for... drumroll... Xbox and PC.
If they want to release it on PS they can let Sony publish it.

“It is important to note that Xbox owns the publishing rights to Sunset Overdrive.

Therefore, a PS5 port would need to be approved by Microsoft.”

I said this eight days ago and got disagrees.

Fishy Fingers301d ago (Edited 301d ago )

Most people dont read bro..

Had it been their IP through and through it would of been an easy release for them and its a fun game, probably would of already happened. The people saying no ones cares about Sunset Overdrive would be saying cant wait to play in 4K 60 if announced

NotoriousWhiz300d ago

"Most people dont read bro.."

Facts.

Zeke68300d ago (Edited 300d ago )

"Most people dont read bro..."

The project was later pitched to Microsoft Studios, which was eager to work with Insomniac. Microsoft allowed Insomniac to own the rights to the game. Sunset Overdrive was made for Microsoft's Xbox One console; it was released on the 20th anniversary of Insomniac, in 2014"

What I read is that Insomniac still own the rights to the game. Prove me wrong! ;)

Edit M$ owns publishing rights on Xbox, not Playstation as they never intended to release it on PS ever.

KwietStorm_BLM301d ago

We can forget about all of their iconic IPs. They're a Marvel studio now.

10 Years Later, Sunset Overdrive Still Remains A Beloved Xbox Exclusive

Does it still hold up in 2024?

We've still got a few months to go, but October marks the 10-year anniversary of this Insomniac Games title, with the developer having since moved on to work on the Marvel's Spider-Man games for PlayStation. It was assumed that Sunset Overdrive might make its way to other platforms eventually, but that hasn't happened as of yet.

So beloved that it sold so well that there's a sequel and Insomniac never had the opportunity to go back to Sony to develop games exclusively for Sony.

RaidenBlack383d ago

ngl, I was low-key expecting Sunset Overdrive to migrate to PS as well along with Hi-Fi Rush and SoT

Christopher383d ago

I think that would require Insomniac going back to work on it to port it over, probably why that's not happening.

RaidenBlack383d ago

Didn't Sony help with SoT port?

Christopher383d ago

I think only in so far as they support every piece of software heading their way? They have that team who specializes in helping people port games, not just SoT, and then the one team that takes PS5 games and ports them to PC (that's their full time job essentially). But that team, the former mentioned one, doesn't do all the work, just help out with how to best do things. So, that team wouldn't port a whole game like Sunset Overdrive.

RaidenBlack383d ago

Ok I thought you meant Insomniac reluctant/Sony not permitting them to go back and work on Overdrive. Hence I added the participation from Sony's side.
But yea, In actuality its Insomniac not having spare dev time to get involved in the port work, atm.

Christopher383d ago

*** But yea, In actuality its Insomniac not having spare dev time to get involved in the port work, atm. ***

Definitely this. They're working on two major IPs as it is and Sony forced them to layoff some people at the end of last year as well. So, likely not capable of sparing the time because resources are being fully utilized.

badz149383d ago (Edited 383d ago )

There was an article awhile back talking about the situation with SSoD. Insomniac does own the IP and Sony now owns it after they bought Insomniac but the publishing right for SSoD is owned by MS - at least the 1st game still is. MS has to sell the publishing rights like they did with the first Mass Effect game to EA after EA bought Bioware before Sony can do anything with the IP.

Einhander1972382d ago

Nobody cares about Sunset Overdrive, except all the xbox fanboys who didn't buy it but like to come into articles about the game and try to act like it's somehow Sony's fault for whatever reason.

darthv72383d ago

there was supposed to be a sequel. IG had it all planned but MS said no. And Sony wont greenlight a sequel if they cant get the first one away from MS. Plus... IG has other projects they moved on to anyways so...... yeah.

fr0sty383d ago

Well, with the recent change in policy towards exclusivity, I imagine Sony could get MS to port it over.

Zeref383d ago

Because a game needs to sell 10 million copies for it to be considered beloved 😂

Christopher383d ago

I mean, it's also not a highly rated game, not even in Insomniac's top ten or even top ten on Xbox that year. With this logic, any game can be beloved and so throwing around the word beloved means absolutely nothing. Doesn't have to sell or have great critical reception, just a handful of people need to love it.

Hofstaderman383d ago

You guys are so starved for games you reminiscing about a decade old game made by a now Sony studio. Of course it never sold 10 million, the vast majority of people bought a PS4.

LucasRuinedChildhood383d ago

A game not played by many can still be beloved by those who played it, yeah.

Only making a profit of $567 after 10 years shows that it was not as beloved as it should have been though. That's really bad.

As much as people complain about AAA games not being unique or having fun ideas or bringing in new IP, a lot of gamers don't show up for them. Even less people seem to have played Hi-Fi Rush.

382d ago
FinalFantasyFanatic382d ago

It was okay when I played it on PC, idk if I'd consider it one of the more beloved games of that generation.

Zeref382d ago

@Christopher

8s and 9s is not highly rated, okay buddy 😂

MontyeKristo383d ago

I mean, it sounds like you're just hating on the game - but, I loved it. It was one of my favorite games of it's time and that generation. Replayability could have been better, but I still managed to play it several times. I would have greatly appreciated a sequel and definitely would have been in line to pick it up..

Things happen.

Christopher383d ago (Edited 383d ago )

***I mean, it sounds like you're just hating on the game***

No, that's all the people who refused to accept that this game was beloved and never even bought it. I, on the other hand, bought, played it, thought it was 'okay' and moved on.

Now, what hate did you see in my post other than listing the fact that it's not as beloved as the few who liked it? This and Days Gone get way more love in online discussions than they do in sales and support, I find. Both are okay games, not much more. But for some **unknown** reason, people prop them up often as more than they are.

Profchaos383d ago (Edited 383d ago )

It's in noabs land unfortunately as Microsoft own the publishing rights to sunset overdrives original game while insomniac own the IP.

So Microsoft would have to be onboard with publishing this game on PlayStation systems with the understanding the would not profit from any subsequent games in the franchise unlike the games they are currently releasing on ps5 to get players into their franchises this would be a small cash injection build a fanbase around a game they no longer own then nothing.

ChasterMies382d ago

I really don’t get the love for Sunset Overdrive. It’s one of the few games I bought, played a few hours, gave up, and never returned.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 382d ago
isarai383d ago

Not beloved enough for Xbox owners to buy it apparently, Xbox was the worst possible audience for that game.

Obscure_Observer383d ago

Sony couldn´t give a f* about Insomniac´s freedom of creativity, that´s why you don´t have a port for that game and will not be getting a sequel either!

That franchise wil probably never make a comback thanks to Sony´s greed for money, which have turned Insomniacs into a Marvel´s slave factory until 2030.

It´s sad, but it is what it is.

ApocalypseShadow383d ago (Edited 383d ago )

I didn't know that Ratchet and Clank were part of the Avengers of Marvel? Hidden in the ending credits of Guardians of the Galaxy or something? Captain Marvel?

Beyond the "cry me a river" of your comment that these Marvel games aren't on Xbox, it was Insomniac that was approached by Sony to work with Marvel to make a game. And let them decide what character they wanted to develop. They chose Spider-Man. Must be highly profitable for them. Wolverine is a profitable, recognizable character. And the X-Men definitely are a hot property that gamers would love as a story based videogame. Being that X-Men 97 brings back a popular Saturday morning cartoon and the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU movies coming up.

It was Microsoft's continued incompetence in cancelling the Marvel MMO game and turning down Marvel in making a super hero game as they were asked first.

Keep the tears flowing. It's not greed. It was smart business to say yes. And maybe Insomniac wants to make these games. And not a game that didn't sell well to an audience that doesn't buy games.

Christopher383d ago (Edited 383d ago )

Neither does Microsoft either, based on your own argument here. Microsoft denied the sequel, not Insomniac/Sony. There's also no sign that Microsoft is allowing a port. They control the next two games in the IP and any DLC or the like for the first. But, nothing.

What's sad is people trying to use this game to blame businesses for doing business things that they are both doing as some way to make them look worse. Microsoft wants to use Insomniac to make a good IP that sells their platform and Sony wants to use Insomniac to make a good IP that sells their platform. But, no, Sony bad!

Don't know why the truth that these companies are very much alike is so hard for people to accept.

PhillyDonJawn383d ago

I bought it, along with at least 1-2 million others.

PrinceOfAnger383d ago

Very fun game that need a sequel.

-Foxtrot383d ago

Insomniac: “We went with Microsoft because we want to own the IP so it’s ours”

Microsoft: *owns publishing rights preventing the studio to re-release the original game, make a remaster, remake, any DLC, massive expansions and multiple sequels on other platforms*

The logic is just…I never got it

Owning the IP was Insomniacs main defence when they announced they were making a game exclusively for MS and yet they’ve ended up “owning” an IP they can’t do anything with.

If they went with Sony like normal you might have seen a sequel by now.

Tacoboto383d ago

The winner of the Logic Cake has to be Bungie, though.

Wanted to be free from Halo and MS, so they buy themselves out, only to partner up with Activision, in the same timeframe as Activision ousting the heads of Infinity Ward, for a full decade with Destiny.

... And then things start falling apart in that relationship almost immediately, whodathought!

Christopher383d ago

Hey, when Sony offers to overpay you for your services and signs a contract that says they won't force you to do anything you don't want, who would say no? Such an overpriced purchase from Sony. Poor business, IMHO. But, honestly, I'm not a business person. But, still, I don't understand it.

darthv72383d ago

...and it seems this conundrum is also why the game cannot receive any sort of FPS boost patch for Series consoles. IG wont make it, and Ms can't get another team to do it without consent from IG. I liked it on XBO, but now I also have this on PC and I can tell ya... it definitely benefits from a 60fps frame rate.

badz149382d ago

been playing it at 1080p144fps on my modest pc. not the hardest game to max out and yeah this game definitely needs to be played at high fps considering all the actions

darthv72383d ago

Sadly this may never get the proper fps update it deserves on XB (or even PS) but I now play it on steam and it definitely feels better at 60fps than it did at 30. Its a fast paced game... you need that 60fps in this one.

babadivad383d ago

This game was so fun. Me and my brother put many hours into this one.
