In many ways you can go back when it comes to remakes and rereleases. Not everybody plays every game when it first comes out. These remakes and rereleases allow more gamers to experience the title for the first time or allow people to reexperience the title again on a modern platform.

The gaming industry is unlike many other indüstries. While other entertainment media like music television and movies generally require you to only have one device to experience many products, gaming requires you to own a specific device to play certain products. This results in more consumers being excluded from playing these games unless they buy more specific devices. This just adds into why remakes and rereleases of games are so important.

MikeClarKent3345d ago

This is touched on in the article, and what you're describing as "going back" is really more about experiencing something new for you that you missed, rather than going back and having the same experience you had before.

Also, the article isn't arguing that remakes and re-releases aren't important, just that they should follow certain rules to appeal to the multiple demographics that they're aiming at. I love remakes and re-releases and find myself playing them more often than any other type of game, but that's mostly because I enjoyed the games the first time around.

Feriku3345d ago

I think the Resident Evil remake is the ideal example of how to handle a remake: improvements all around, new surprises and content, and core gameplay that remains true to the original.

Sly-Lupin3345d ago

Really not a big fan of RE games, but I absolutely agree. The REmake is fantastic.

Another go-to example would be Chrono Trigger on the NDS, which manages to be absolutely faithful to the original game while improving it in every way. The same can be said for the three Dragon Quest remakes on the NDS that Square-Enix commissioned before they went full-on stupid.

Bahamut3345d ago

Wind Waker HD, Resident Evil Remake, and Halo: Masterchief Collection are prime examples of how remakes should be approached. I enjoyed playing Twilight Princess, God of War, The Last of Us, Heavy Rain, and other remasters quite a lot, but when a game gets recreated, I'd like to see some improvements aside from just framerate and resolution improvements. Actually update the game's textures, shading, etc. and maybe add some additional content?

Just my thoughts...

MikeClarKent3345d ago

Definitely agreed. Update what you can and add some new stuff. No need to try so hard to make an exact copy of the original if you have fewer limitations.

Sly-Lupin3345d ago

In a remake, everything is changed, even when you're absolutely faithful to the original... because you're re-making a thing.

Rereleasing and remaking are two entirely different concepts.

MikeClarKent3345d ago (Edited 3345d ago )

They aren't *entirely* different concepts. Many remakes rely heavily on the original and try to stay faithful to it. It's not building a new concept from the ground up. Remakes and re-releases are different, but they're both about reproducing an experience to an extent, rather than creating a whole new one.

MikeClarKent3345d ago

Also, the article does treat them as two different things with their own sets of rules.

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Levii_9236d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil36d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

__y2jb36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

Yeah. That’s the first I’ve seen it anywhere near #1.

Mario 64 is great but I wouldn’t put it over Mario World.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list is a crime.

CUnit123123101d ago

Sorry lol. I wrote the article but 5 of us voted for many different games and majority went on the list then we worked on the list. If it were just my personal top favorite we'd seen some xenoblade and star ocean as well as some others. Thanks for checking out it!

Chrono Trigger at 31 makes my heart hurt.

Zeldafan64100d ago

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list at all is a crime.
