PC & Console VR Will Barely Exceed 1.7 Million Sales in 2016 Due to Prohibitively High Pricing

Analysts from Strategy Analytics forecast that PS VR, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift will have troubles in 2016 due to the high price barrier.

I mean 1.7m for new tech isn't bad. If it picks up I mean that number will sky rocket

Alexious3363d ago

It's bad if you consider that it has to be split among all three. It's not 1.7 each in case you thought that.

amiga-man3363d ago

PSVR is the price of a console, people are more than happy to pay that for a console as 40 million PS4 sales would testify, If what VR offers is worth it, then it will sell.

Going by peoples reaction VR has a big future and I'm excited to jump in.

Eonjay3363d ago

My got tells me that this prediction is wrong. PSVR can easily clear 2 million before the end of the year. And when you mix in Vive and the Rift, I think it can hit 2.5 million before the end of the year at least.

fr0sty3363d ago (Edited 3363d ago )

Yet pre-orders for Oculus and PSVR have been selling out. Oculus orders are backed up until August. I think this is just another analyst talking out of their ass.

Vegamyster3363d ago

@amiga-man

Up here in Canada the VR is more than the console, $430 for the console while the headset is $550 or $700 for the move/camera bundle. Little bit too much atm, I'll probably wait for a drop.

LetoAtreides823363d ago

666k each by the end of the year for Vive, Oculus, and PSVR is not bad at all considering none of them released at the start of the year. I think PSVR will easily do more than 666k by the end of the year...

donthate3363d ago

This isn't going to be what everyone on n4g hopes it to be. VR will shine, but it will take years to get the content, and price down. Oculus at one point hoped to sell 1 million units as it most optimistic sales number, so this is right in line with that.

garrettbobbyferguson3363d ago

@amigaman

Let me repeat what you just said "People are more than happy to pay 400 dollars for a console, so that means they'll pay 400 dollars for an accessory".

Now, do you understand why I repeated what you said? Because what you said is silly.

Hitoemi3362d ago (Edited 3362d ago )

@Amiga-man

you need the console for the core experince and to play games. You dont need PSVR to play games, this will be the down fall of it and other VR devices they arent require to get the core experience. This is why MS wanted every Xbone to require kinects because addons are just that addons and you cant be sure they will be embraced by the base or that devs will support that device. No support means no sales of the device, no sales of the device means no support and around it goes.

Yeah I got better things to spend my money on. Still not convinced this is something I need.

What I need is medical care and for that price I could buy new computer or bunch of pineapples for no reason. Yes I think pineapples will be proven more useful than that thing. Agree or disagree my opinion stands! I am serious but joking at the same time.

no_more_heroes3363d ago

hmm...what could one possibly do with so many pineapples?

Necr0philiac3363d ago

He could take the core out the pineapples and warm them up in the microwave.

thejigisup3363d ago

If you had half a mind you would also pick up a lovely bunch of coconuts.

FasterThanFTL13363d ago (Edited 3363d ago )

It depends more on the easy availability than the price. VR is nicely shaping up to be a must have gadget for a lot of peopleand even if you have the money, it is still right now very hard to get your hands on a high-end VR device if you did not Pre-Order.

Alexious3363d ago

Personally I went for 4K after trying most VR devices. HDR displays are coming soon as well.

4K+HDR>VR for me.

AgentSmithPS43363d ago

Strange that you'd rather look at a game through a window.

garrettbobbyferguson3363d ago

Of course 4k is better. That crispness and smoothness is infinitely better. Combine that with track ir and your experience will be even better than VR.

sammarshall1023363d ago (Edited 3363d ago )

VR for gaming won't last people won't want to wear these things on their heads

Hitoemi3362d ago

This guys gets it. Most of these people kn here that are all " I dont care what it cost Im getting it"nonsense do reslize they are a very small minority. @400 Id rather have a new bigger tv for my game room than a VR headset that basically adds nothing to the game or experience it simply puts the screen 10 inches from my eyes.

Phil323363d ago

I'm not really feeling VR, but that's mostly to due with the fact that I haven't been able to experience it yet. I'm sure once I do I'd be sold.

_LarZen_3363d ago

Yes. VR is something you have to try. Once you do. You get why there is so much excitement around it :)

SavingPvt_Highon3363d ago

Exactly. I hear a lot of people scoffing at it and calling VR gimmicky. Guaranteed these people haven't actually tried VR for themselves. VR is here to stay.

vanity293363d ago

I wanted to try vr before dropping cash in for a vive. So i made a bootleg device, getting a $20 headset for my phone. Bought an app called trinusVR for 10 bucks. Hooked it up to my pc and tried some games.

Motion sick as hell, 50fps was my max with this piece of trash. But it was fun. I can see why there is hype for the expensive headsets.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3363d ago

I agree with the price point. Sony should have priced the unit at $299 -$349.

It could be free and it wouldn't matter at this point. There isn't really a PCVR Market and I say that as a PCVR user. It is modders and enthusiasts with a few retail products on Steam.
