Sony has revealed that they are open to bringing PlayStation VR to PC.

Interesting... I think that it may help VR to become more mainstream too.

nX3331d ago

It's actually the only thing keeping me from buying directly into PSVR. I'm sure there will be a lot of good games on PS4 but there are always some uses on PC that you won't find on a console.

Also from a business perspective having the cheapest headset on the market available for two platforms almost guarantees market domination, Sony should really announce this at E3 even if it isn't ready for launch.

Volkama3331d ago

Tis a big deal if true. Even more so if Sony eventually open things up the other way and allow other headsets to display PS4(k?) games.

Open is always best for the consumer.

OpenGL3331d ago

Agreed, if PSVR worked with PC out of the box I'd be much more inclined to buy it day 1 for $400. I have a PS4 and like the system a lot, but if I'm going to buy a $400 peripheral I want it to be able to get as much use as possible.

subtenko3331d ago

Same, if it works with PC VR games, then Im not gonna get the vive, Ima get the psvr, I can experience the best of both VR worlds :D

why would I by 3 vr headsets? If anything, I was gonna get psvr first, then wait till vive price drop.

Then hope a second gen vr headset doesnt come out anytime soon lol

freshslicepizza3331d ago

cool, the more love the pc gets the better.

dirkdady3331d ago

Boom shots fired by Sony. I suspect Sony will have to work with valve so the platform supports Ps VR.

NewMonday3331d ago

called this month ago

Sony wants the PSVR initially to increases the momentum of the PS4 further, once the VR uptake slowed down on consoles PSVR will be supported on PC, compatibility with both PC & PS4 will be a big advantage.

darthv723331d ago

@monday, Sony shouldn't have to wait for the PSVR to slow before taking it to PC. They should make it available at the same time or not more than 1 year after.

Having it available for PC users to create indie titles as well as big name developers means the amount of support overall would increase. Support to make the idea mainstream instead and creating a better chance for success.

Sony will sell them to PS4 users, we know this but to also have it to PC means the PC get another choice to work with. And why not one that can bridge that gap between PC and console as it doesn't look like Sony would be open to OR and Vive working on the PS4.

ThanatosDMC3330d ago

I hope it's true. More people will get their hands on it and more games or stupid echi stuff will be created. I bet they'll make a Dead or Alive Paradise VR.

Unspoken3330d ago

What's the cost going to be for a PS4 bundle to get up and running on PC? PSVR for $499 plus controller? That kinda of removes any price advantage.

Personally I don't like the look of the PSVR setup. It seems kiddie when compared to the other two major headsets. Thats just me.

I will have to agree it will bring more Japanese related content over, and that is a good thing.

fr0sty3330d ago

It wouldn't be without precedent. Sony has always been the most open console manufacturer. The only one to let you install an OS on your console. The first one to offer cross platform play with PC, the one with the least paywalls, etc.

Omeganex99993330d ago

@Unspoken

No, it would be 430-460$, you can find the PS Camer for as cheap as 30$ (or you could, guess it's going to be more expensive from now on, unless Sony decides to cut the price).

That is still 170-140$ less than Oculus. YOU DON'T NEED A PAIR OF PS MOVE CONTROLLERS TO USE IT. You can play any game with a normal controller, you are not forced to buy a PS4 one.

And please, everybody is pissed at Sony because they decided not to include the PS Camera and the premium bundle is 100$ more expensive, but everyone keeps magically forgetting about the Oculus Controllers that will be sold separately.

Even if that was the case, PSVR would make sense on PC since lower specs means broader audience. It's 150$ cheaper if you have a PC powerful enough to use Oculus/Vive, otherwise it's going to be much cheaper.

bouzebbal3330d ago

if true, then the other 2 VRs are in trouble

cayleee3330d ago (Edited 3330d ago )

Well console hardware is generally made with cost limitations in mind. I would be vary of buying a Sony VR for the PC. Since it would probably made of lower quality / specs compared to the VR available on the PC.

You get what you pay for. If i can afford 600-1000usd in graphics hardware on a PC then i wouldnt gimp it by going with a low end VR solution.

bouzebbal3330d ago (Edited 3330d ago )

@cayleee:
VR needs to become mainstream before i think of investing in a high end device. First people need to make sure that it works and it's what they want, because investing 800€ or more and realize it's not something for you anyway is not a smart move.

PSVR has more chances of succeeding than its competitors. Once people are boarding the hype train then Sony can release an updated headset with more into it, if the existing isn't enough already.

cayleee3330d ago (Edited 3330d ago )

@abdz

How successful was Sony at 3d lol or the Move? i would say a failure in both.

Again for VR you need a high end PC. PS4 is a low end PC at best. Hence if you already have a high end PC, then it only makes sense to compliment it with the best possible VR solution. Few hundered extra USD never hurt anyone. Purposely gimping it with a cheaper solution is not a good option, then waiting for Sony to come up with a better solution lol. I personally dont believe PS4 has the muscle to be a real VR solution to begin with. Leave that to the PC just like 3D, Sony will just again be a big failure lol. Real VR will only be available on the PC since its the only platform with the Muscle and open source many games can easily be ported to VR on the PC where as on console this will again be a big dissapointment.

TwoForce3331d ago

Well said. It's very interesting to see them doing to bring PSVR to PC. This could help the mainstream audience.

UltraNova3331d ago

Yes it will help since they could get PSVR for 500 instead of 800(Oculus will cost the same once you buy their controller)plus PSVR PC requirements should be significantly lower than what's needed for the Vive and Rift.

Maybe it will even help bring more PC VR experiences to the ps4 as well. This can work if Sony keeps their in house games exclusive to the ps4 while allowing 3rd party PSVR games to be released on PC as well, since it wont alienate their console fan-base(see 3rd party ps4&PC games like SFV).

darthv723331d ago

@ultra, what makes you think the requirements for PSVR on PC to be lower than the other two? Are you implying that PSVR is a lower quality product and would not need such specs to function?

skyrock3331d ago (Edited 3331d ago )

very very very smart move from sony!!!
its just a matter of time once big companies like ACTIVITION,BETHESA,SQUREENIX,U BISOFT,EA and other big companies start making vr games.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! instant sold out for preorder is already good sign and thats going to attract big companies.

donthate3330d ago

Darth:

That would lower the entry price on PC for VR significantly and take away a reason for why consumers would buy a PS4, right?

UltraNova3330d ago (Edited 3330d ago )

@darth

If PSVR can run on a ps4 then it should run on a similarly, maybe slightly more powerful PC, meaning a mid-range PC will be up to the task, aka affordable.

Did you really need me to spell it out for you?

@Donthate

No it wouldn't since PS4(as I mentioned already) would still have its 'exclusive' reasons for owning one.

@Both:

Your attempts to downplay my comment and spread your hatred towards anything Sony related was pathetic. Try harder.

bouzebbal3330d ago

@donthate:
The thing is: PS4 is selling with or without VR. I do not expect PSVR to sell PS4s, it's actually the other way around.
PSVR on PC is just a way to make it a technology for everyone, not only for a "limited" group of people.

PSVR on PC will happen weather Sony likes it or not. There will be modders out there who will make a custom driver for it to work on Windows just like every single peripheral out there!

Picnic3331d ago

I note that you don't say whether you would disagree with such modders doing it. I don't like passive (or implicit) acceptance of using someone else's creative work without the legal or moral permissions.

UltraNova3331d ago

Nothing beats OEM's support, when its there that is.

Deadpooled3331d ago

Yep just like the ps4 and ps3 pads.

Fez3331d ago (Edited 3331d ago )

@Picnic
I'm all for modders opening up PSVR to PC if Sony doesn't. Once you have bought the HW I see no moral argument against doing with it what you wish (obviously as long as you don't harm anyone).

Even if someone makes money by selling a custom made driver, I see it as only sligtly less moral than sharing it freely (both are morally fine though). Perhaps legal issues could arise, but legality does not always correlate with morality.

badz1493331d ago

@Picnic

Why would I disagree with modders making drivers for stuff to work on PC? Actually, I'm all for it! It brings no harm, just opens up possibilities!

kneon3330d ago

@Picnic

If the drivers are written from scratch, without using any Sony code, then there is nothing illegal or immoral about it.

FamilyGuy3330d ago

Seeing as Sony has already said that these units are being sold at a profit I see no issue with this in any regard. If it were being sold at a loss the story would be switched because when they do that it's with the idea of making the money back through software sales tied to the device.

I hope Sony does release so way to connect PSVR to PCs soon after launch.

Muzikguy3330d ago

Anyone should have seen this coming. I know I did

escott0133330d ago

Dragonddark, I completely agree with you. It would be extremely beneficial to VR as a whole.
I personally think I will bite the bullet and pay a premium for the most technologically advanced HMD. Within the first year of all major HMDs released, I will eventually own the best ones and use them according to what they are best suited for. (:

camel_toad3330d ago

Yes VR Porn! Even happier with my pre-order now. C'mon - who are we kidding. Who doesn't want to strangle their monkey in VR?

IamTylerDurden13330d ago

PSVR doesn't need PC, nor will Sony go that route. When has Sony ever allowed their games on PC?

PSVR is already flooding into the mainstream, i had to scratch and claw to secure my preorder.

Kiwi663330d ago

Well it looks like Sony themselves don't agree you

IamTylerDurden13330d ago

Considering Sony only said they are open to the possibility in the future, i wouldn't take that as solid proof that something is imminent.

yellowgerbil3330d ago

a bit off topic.But I hope Playstation Dreams is more open to being used for other things. I think it would be great as a tool to link with a 3d printer. could make cool little characters in the game and then print them out.

FlexLuger3331d ago

Of course they are. It will be the biggest market for VR.

kraenk123331d ago

I might disagree on that but they are clever to open it up nonetheless.

FlexLuger3331d ago

@tonyk2

"NVIDIA said that there are 13 million PCs capable of running Oculus, there are !40 million PS4s out there, so again, what is the biggest market?"

You honestly believe that even half of those PS4 owners are going to spend north of 350 bucks on a peripheral? Console owners generally dont spend that kind of money apart from when its time to buy a new console...That same "13 million" capable of running VR on their PC,s spend that kind of money more readily. You seem to forget that FACT.....

@Death

"The biggest market would be PS4 and PC combined."

True. Maybe when sony are putting PSVR games on PC, they will benefit from that.

Kaneki-Ken3331d ago

Yeah since PSVR pre-order is sold out in Europe and North American in Amazon.com which became number 1 in Amazon best selling item (NA amazon.com soldout 3 times, first time took a day, second time within 4 min and Third time with 20 min. Also Gamestop mention that pre order are is doing great. So yeah a lot PS4 owners are interesting in PSVR.

FlexLuger3330d ago

@Kaneki-Ken

Im not disputing that there is interest in PSVR, at all. What I AM disputing is how much of that audience is buying PSVR VS PC gamers. And given that we dont know how many units amazon or game stop had in stock, its hard to say there are more PS owners interested in VR. And historically speaking...when has an accessory priced at anything over 200 bucks EVER been successful on consoles? I cant think of any.

Germany73330d ago

Sony will not put PSVR games on another platform, LOL this guy, this is not Xbox.

Haru3330d ago

you are very delusional indeed, 13 millions is only 40% of ps4 userbase, it would be enough if only 30% of ps4 users buy a vr that would make up more than 90% of the pc vrready userbase

FlexLuger3329d ago

"13 millions is only 40% of ps4 userbase"

Ah yes...Teh Millionz.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

"it would be enough if only 30% of ps4 users buy a vr that would make up more than 90% of the pc vrready userbase"

I see why you only have 5 bubbbles now. You do this sort of thing a lot dont you?

Majin-vegeta3331d ago

I thought we knew this already?I remember reading it last year.

FATHASUN3330d ago

Thank you. I was waiting for someone to mention this before I commented myself about it. It was definitely stated by Sony that PSVR will expand to PC and be used for more than just games in the future. This is not new information.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney3331d ago (Edited 3331d ago )

Man pc is getting so damn much.

PSMove already works on pc to!

Not sure about the cam.

Could I trust sony to make thing flawlessly windows compatible?

hmmmm

Bobafret3331d ago

Whoa, you really ruffled some feathers there lol

Tobsesan3331d ago

How is move supposed to work without the camera? Do you even brain?

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney3325d ago

I don't playstation actually.

The people who don't brain are the ones who bought psMove or the camera.

So I don't know how the psMove works, I just know it works on pc!

Most people I am sure never bought psMove or the camera so please don't act like most of us know about the thing.
