Review-in-Progress: Salt and Sanctuary for a Dark Soul's N00b

Liam from The Game Bolt: "alt and Sanctuary comes to us from Ska Studios, developers of The Dishwasher series and Charlie Murder. It’s the first title that is a part of the PlayStation Launch Party, Sony’s attempt at pushing what they believe to be standout titles, with pre-order discounts hoping to entice gamers to download their game early. A 2D side scrolling action game, it’s fair in its challenging difficulty, educating players before the onslaught of enemy undead begins."

The best game from Ska Studios, by a mile. I just decimated the Disemboweled Husk with my level 50 Strength build (Knight). I'm using a Bulwark Greatsword V and a Monstrous Mace IV atm. I'm quite OP tbh.

With Enter the Gungeon next week, Stories, and Alienation, i'm in indie heaven on PS4. I adore the Launch Party promo.

We are enjoying the games as well!Personally, I can't wait for Stories; the premise sounds great. Have you had a chance to play Day of the Tentacle Remastered yet?

I have Gungeon, Stories, and Alienation preordered but have not played DotT yet. DotT is getting spectacular reviews, this promo is fantastic.

I personally guarantee that both Gungeon and Alienation will review well. I am extremely excited about Stories, it's gorgeous, has a platinum, and has a wonderful fantasy setting. However, i can't guarantee it will review well, but i'm still all in.

Have been playing this for a couple of hours and comparing it to Dark Souls is an insult. The combat in Salt and Sanctuary leaves a lot to be desired. As does the tasteless art direction. I would advise players to watch some "Let's play" videos of it before you buy it.

You're right, comparing S&S to DS2 is an insult....to S&S. S&S is a better game than the last Dark Souls, it just is. The art direction is absolutely stunning in S&S, how Ska Studios plays with tone and palette is truly beautiful. Even the boss names are shockingly creative. The Queen of Smiles, The Unspeakable Deep. This game oozes style and artistic grace.

It just copies the Dark Souls games in a bad way (with similar boss names as well like you mentioned). Good for you that you like it although I think a lot of DS and Metroidvania fans might be just as disappointed with it as I am.

I'm hoping Gungeon, Stories and Alienation turn out better since those are also high on my most wanted list.

I preordered all of those.

Most ppl love Salt and Sanctuary, it has an 86 metacritic i believe.

Just going through DS 2 now, it's really not a bad game.

LoveSpuds987d ago

I thinks it's a fantastic game personally, even the weakest DS game in the series is better than most other action RPGs in my opinion.

Hope you enjoy your playthrough chief 👍

It was a great game, there is no souls game from fromsoft that was bad. My only complaints were the visuals and bosses were a bit too easy. Other than that it was very fun and probably the only soulsbourne game I played nonstop and beat in just a couple of weeks pre-elden ring (Well, it took me to beat three other soulsborne games which took me years to beat to finally actually get hooked to souls, so I was very hungry for more souls lol).

People didn't like it because of no Miyazaki and the only game I really loved from him was just Bloodborne (Ofc the rest were great games too). Bloodborne is my #1, Ds2 is my #2.

Yeah bosses are not exactly hard that I have come across so far. The graphics are a mixed bag, Scholar of the First Sin on PC with no mods.
Admission time even though I own all Souls games day one editions across the formats, Elden Ring was the only one that really clicked with me to a point I had to finish it. Now going back to ones released on PC to finish those or try to. Bloodborne I wish would come to PC but I might fire up my PS 4 again to play it.

It's wonky here and there, but it's still fun to play and a great world to explore.
