Funny thing is Nintendo usually uses parts that are familiar between controllers. Nothing on this has any striking resemblance to any previous controller design.

not sure why nintendo feels like they have to reinvent the wheel every generation. you are not going to win back fans if the system forces new concepts that add to the overall costs and does not improve what is already familiar or gives a better experience overall.

Wii U was, PS4 was, XONE was..in fact XONE's leaks is a perfect example of how common it is to have new platforms leaked, the debates RAGED on the whole online only thing, many kept saying "its not confirmed so who cares" but many also were smart enough to know the HUGE chances that it was true based on the history of such leaks.

Tatsumi Kimishima was the guy who at the time didn't like the Wii U name and most likely thought it was going in the wrong direction.

By the looks of the pictures the NX is complete. He took over in October i think. He was looking at a finished prototype, dev kits already being sent out. It was a done deal. I dont think it is a "out of respect" thing. I think it was more of a "eat this bowl of S" thing. That happens alot on the management side of things.

Yea they don't have time too abandon Iwata's last idea though so they are seeing it through and probably making some adjustments to it.

Kimishima will go in a different direction with the console after this but for now they will do the best they can with Iwata's last idea. ( not that it was specifically his..just that he lead it).

The funniest thing about the Alonzo Mourning gif isn't his sad face, but the score in the lower left hand corner. I couldn't stop laughing. Don't assume things. Consider the controller and the likelihood of it actually being the controller. I did not see any butons, and what's a controller without buttons. Suggestion that say the buttons are touchscreen simply venture into the utterly absurd category. Its nice speculating but, don't assume it's 100% true. I agree, the only thing that looks iffy to me is the shape...I feel like it needs to be a bit more substantial to fit in the hands, maybe throw on some grips & it should be cool. I'm not against the idea of digital buttons if done correctly. Maybe Nintendo has a grip peripheral that the controller can sit in or something along those lines...I'm sure a third party will make one if they don't.

Either way I'm gonna hold off criticism until the system is fully rolled out. My curiosity is always piqued at a new console though so I'm excited to see how it all plays out, hope Nintendo has a hit on its hands.

2nd, patents usually include the most basic design possible for whatever device its supposed to be about, so it can cover the most.

From this I'm still going with my prediction that it's a handheld primarily that either has a apple tv/ kindle fire tv to link it to the tv or an app that uses the WiiU as that connection to the TV. The size alone clearly indicates handheld. Then again this is still rumor.

I've had a similar thought myself. If they are going after a more mobile market, that rumor about the console coming with a wireless stick that uses their streaming tech on the gamepad makes even more sense.

They could pour all their money into making a bleeding edge mobile device that actually computes everything on the "controller" and streams to the TV. That would be an interesting approach, though one less suited to how those in the West game.

It's all rather interesting. Will be curious to see where the console finally ends up.

If this is the way the controller is meant to be used, then yea, DOA.

However, I think there is also a chance that it pops into a more traditonal controller "shell" that has tactile buttons and this is just the middle. It would allow you to detach and take it with you, but still give you the physical buttons alongside a touchscreen that would be far more practicle for using for in-game thing when used alongside the console (since you could reach the entirety of the screen in this size vs. the gamepad).

I could see this being almost akin to using a Vita attached to the PS4 as your primary controller, but I'd suspect the shell would be far more controller-like given it wouldn't have to worry about being flat/portable. It could also contain an extra battery so that the mini-system could last longer as a controller instead of relying on only its internal battery.

It just seems to lack sense or ergonomics if this is how it is planned to be shipped. IF it's even real of course.

This was debunked already, but I thank God every day that there is still a platform manufacturer that provides interesting new ways to play each gen. I don't want motion controls every gen, but I'm glad I got to at least experience it for one generation. I don't want a gamepad every gen, but I'm glad I got to experience it for one generation.

Whatever they do next- it may not be something I want permanently, but I'll definitely appreciate experiencing it for one generation. I seriously doubt the REAL NX won't have buttons, but if it doesn't, perhaps try it first before crying foul. I doubt they're going to make a system that doesn't control to a certain degree of accuracy.

Nintendo has a great , networked Eco system design if they do this..really was one of the only things missing..

Its not about the power of the system with Nintendo it's the Eco system.

The 3DS & other Nintendo handhelds are Nintendo's mainstay now..their living room system has great service for gaming, but many feel that Nintendo's play to get 3rd party support ends up suffering vs playstation & Xbox.

So what we may be looking at is Nintendo's outlook to combine a true combo of mobile & living room game console where their mobile & livingroom console are one and the same system where take your system in the go, bring it back home and its tethered to the living room console.

Instead of trying to compete with power of the living room console make their living room system developer friendly for smartphone developers and mainly those developers that make Nintendo 3DS games already..

Gathering more interest from those developers already on board with their mobile platforms but also gathering those that make smartphone games developers & publishers alike no doubt would love for a chance of their mobile games to have front and center on the living room system Nintendo living room console..

Instead of many saying Nintendo needs to release their iP's on other platforms..Nintendo would no doubt like to bring other iP's to their system.

While Microsoft & Sony mainly target PC and big console game publishers that in order to bring those iP's to their systems based on Higher performance.

Nintendo concentrates on gathering mobile developers to have a big name living room console company to help bring those games made by smartphone developer studios & publishers.

Japan main software & hardware platform for gaming is by and large smartphone centric..well I think Nintendo sees that as an advantage to head that way toward that tide..

Quite true, but I do think that in as Nintendo going for smartphone gaming developers to shift resources to such a smartphone mobile centric platform for their type of game theory & design, Nintendo could very well set their console Eco system to be the alternative to having to concentrate on large development resources to build on a game by game case.

The ROI should in theory be cheaper. Though with chipsets in move being as advanced as they are today, you may be able to save some money in costs but may not be that large in savings if you intend to make a Epic smartphone game like those with high end assets of art with less duplications of SRT assets. And have more optimization for a smartphone mobile chip. Example PSVita had such problems..today's smartphone chips only compound such..

They almost need team size's like you already need on many living room console's developments and like you would in making games like a PC. Advanced Api like vulkan is now the standard for most smart phones for Apple its Metal. For windows phone its DirectX 12 ..so just like their larger siblings like PC & higher performance game Consoles..the Mobile chips require more costs & manpower and time to triangle.

But it is an over all cheaper platform investment at least. High performance at a 5 watt or less system board has a large advantage is in cost /watt and when plugged into a wall for continued power..having a mobile that is linked as not just network but as is the entire Eco system.

Building on that design for such a platform, may give Nintendo just what they need for their new console's release..that is of course is if this is in fact the direction they are in fact going in.

I would not think of it as a separate this or if it's that, think of it as a living room extender of a living room console being able to be played anywhere.

Sony for example with playstation Vita has such a pseudo concept such as this but did not fully build their Eco system around such..I think that is where Nintendo could very well gather support for it to succeed , where Sony had failed to such a Eco system the way they went with on the PSVita, for instance would not be able to do such as Nintendo would mainly due to How Nintendo approach the mobile market.

The way forward is Embracing that smartphone market and making a niche within not try to steer your existing platform to try to disrup it, because its too late the smartphone make just like the dedicated PDA market already has disrupted the portable game console market. The best thing to do is incorporate the smartphone market into your Eco system.

Nintendo I think has such a good spring board starting point they would be wise to do such, and if this is true to form leak of the direction Nintendo could very well gather a ton of developer support into their Eco system from the mobile developers market in smartphone..along with its publisher's to boot.

What many may not be looking at is what if that top screen is not a controller in the literal sense, but can also be docked and little figures placed on that touch screen for a certain game they have out right now.

Imagine is the top of their portable Nintendo is not only custom control functions but also as a display/control interface/ or is just one part to connect a physical controller to.

Imagine a pico itx single board Mini HPC with a 4.5 to 5" screen on top. Thus use the system anywhere but also hooked up to a living room console that hooks to your TV..it kinda has 2nd screen functional abilities , but also as a way to game on the go..picture a little kickstand on the back that folds flat when not in use but use the very same controller that a living room console use.

Imagine clipping that little screen to your existing living room game console Nintendo controller pad.

Sort of the middle man Nintendo system from living room to portable on the go gaming but sold with the system a update to the touch controller game pad..but everyone's touch controller game pad is a system into itself, runs the same games as the living room , because the living room games are the same game buy it on the system the portable one is already included. Because a portable is already included into the system. When you buy it.

Its in other words the same hardware that is inside the living room system is inside that little top screen system. Both dock together to provide transfer of saves to the mobile satalite screen system or to the living room system.

Now imagine taking your satalite system over to another gamers house. And docking it with their living room system..ow two satalite systems docked together.

Its not about using touch controllers, the fact is with smartphone Bluetooth or otg wired controller pad controllers work just fine..so like I pointed out just like any living room game console the game pad is hooked up to the living room console and to the satalite sub portable system.

If Nintendo uses the same hardware for both its not looking to use just a touch screen. Could they..well yeah, but like I pointed out its about the Eco system.

We don't need a Ps4 with Zelda or a Vita with Mario, NX needs to innovate and differentiate itself from the competition.

Some people didn't like the glasses free 3D on the 3DS , yet it was a killer feature and a selling point. I hope they continue with the 3D glasses free function from the 3DS. Being able to tell depth adds more to games then graphics.
I would like buttons like the next person, but we don´t know how it will handle in real-life or if it has buttons on the back of it.

Nintendo, the Gamecube controller was fantastic. All you needed to do was tweak that design a little, introduce a motion sensor and touch pad like the PS4 and you could've had the greatest controller of all time. It looks like a thinner, smaller version of a Vita. It appears to have shoulder buttons, but I wonder if it has any others on the backside. Anyway, I imagine it feeling like a Vita. Could be cool, definitely appreciate the actual thumb sticks as opposed to what Valve tried with the Steam controller. My primary concern would be price. Shelling out $60 for a controller is manageable but still a hit. I've got to think this would run at least $100. And if Nintendo goes for the welcoming/easy to learn setup it's known for I could see the cost being a point of contention for those folks who maybe enjoy LoZ or Donkey Kong but aren't going to touch something like Fire Emblem.

And then we will have WiiU emulation in a couple years that runs as good as Dolphin does, hell it's already running in an okayish state.

It looks exactly like the patent drawing, which is often not the case for an actual device.

It looks crazy uncomfortable to use, which is not likely from Nintendo - even the WiiU game pad, for all its size, isn't bad on the hands.

The images make it very easy to identify who/where the photo came from. I doubt there are many NX units around, and any that are would be with big companies. Those big companies will be aware of this supposed leak, so working out who at their company:

(A) has a MacBook with a foreign keyboard
(B) with an window office opposite trees that have no leaves (so a country that has a cold winter season)
(C) also with a WiiU to hand
(D) as well as a Samsung monitor
(D) on a dark wood effect desk
(E) *AND* has access to an NX (Marked with a Unit 2 label)

Which makes me think its fake, because leaks are nearly always very anonymous, with non-descript backgrounds and usually not much else in shot.

i don't get why people think this looks horrible... i kind of like it, actually. i'm only hoping that if it's real that it's not just a handheld device - i want a new nintendo console that's on par with what sony/MS have on the market right now. i've pretty much skipped wiiU because i thought it was too late for them to have launched a console that was only just barely better than PS3/X360 right before (yeah, i know it was a year) the launch of PS4/Xbox One.
