3rd party and indie devs have worse survival odds. Game development is a tough industry. For many reasons.

shodan743376d ago

It's true that it's a tough industry. But I can't remember a five-year period when so many first-party studios closed their doors.

Commando_Bro3375d ago

I'm not surprised, the studio wasn't very productive.

They launched with Motorstorm at launch of the PS3. 2-3 years later they come with Motorstorm Pacific Rift. The game only has 4 tracks. 2 years and only 4 tracks??? The game looked great and played well but paying 60$ for 4 tracks? Compared to Split Second, it's not much.

then Driveclub came. The game was supposed to launch with the PS4, they delayed the game 1 year.
Then they launch the game, the network wasn't working.
A few weeks you could play, but get dropped out.
A few months later you could play this "social racer".
Then it took another year and a half to get thew much promised graphics of weather that was supposed to be there at launch.

Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't close it down at the same time as Zipper Interactive.
I wish there would be a MAG 2. Now that the PS4 has that install base, they could create something better than MAG. No "3 factions" just player clans with all guns available.

the costs including marketing isn't very sustainable. plus it takes years now to promote with far too many delays.

this is why it makes sense to collaborate and contract out like sony did with bloodborne and what microsoft is doing with quantum break.

Blastoise3375d ago (Edited 3375d ago )

@Commando_Bro

Motorstorm Pacific Rift didn't have 4 tracks at all, did you even play it?

It has 16 tracks, double the amount of the first game and they added jungles, volcanoes, beaches, mountains amongst others

Did you just google it and assume the Earth, Fire, Air & Water catagories were tracks? :S

Forn3375d ago

@Commando

Motorstorm Pacific Rift was amazing imo, and had far more than 4 tracks. I agree though that with Driveclub, the launch could have, and should have been much better than it went down.

Making movies and video games are so expensive and are a such a high risk .

Herbalistic3375d ago (Edited 3375d ago )

Any studio 1st or 3rd party will end up being closed down if they can't produce meaningful profit. The gaming industry is like any other business your studio/store or w/e is only safe long as returns keeps coming in.

ScorpiusX3375d ago (Edited 3375d ago )

First party anything always have uncertainties to worry about . Its like my grandfather says if its not making a return then its time to go or to make it simple there are only two things Guaranteed and those are death & taxes .

Studios end and new studios form. Sucks sometimes but its always been that way, first party or not

‘It’s been really painful’: Ex-Lionhead devs explain why they’ve announced, and shelved, a new game

An independent UK developer says it’s been forced to announce and postpone its game on the same day, and lay off more than half of its staff, due to the sharp downturn in investment in the games industry.

DriveClub director confirms he’ll reveal his next game this year

Paul Rustchynsky, who was additionally lead designer on several MotorStorm titles at Sony‘s Evolution Studios, is currently working on an unannounced project as part of Avalanche Studios’ new Liverpool development team, which was formed last summer.

deleted1264d ago

Nice. I really like Avalanche's Apex system, it can make some pretty stunning environments. Hopefully it'll translate well into a racing game! (assuming that's what he's working on)

Magog1263d ago

He specifically says it won't be a racing game of any kind.

deleted1263d ago

Yea, I see he posted a different tweet clarifying that now, but that was not posted in this original tweet or any of the replies. I apologize for not scrolling through all of his Twitter account.Thanks.

Magog1263d ago

@OtterX It's in the credit URL actual story. No need to get upset.

MIDGETonSTILTS171263d ago

Motorstorm 2 deserves a remaster.

The balanced monster trucks vs dirt bikes.

chicken_in_the_corn1263d ago

Why a remaster? A new game would be so much better

MIDGETonSTILTS171263d ago

Because it’s been designed already…

Azfargh1262d ago

I would be happy with just that at 60fps... but... if it were a new game with course maker, 50 cars racing at the same time, focusing on Pacific Rift and Monument Valley... I would feel way better

MIDGETonSTILTS171260d ago

That sounds like alotta extra work for content nobody is clamoring for.

Classic maps for me please. I actually want the game to release.

MaximusPrime_1263d ago

"To set some expectations, I'm not working on a racing game.
So sorry, no DRIVECLUB sequel, MotorStorm successor or ONRUSH offshoot.
This is something very different to anything I've worked on before"
So it will not be a racing game. That's a shame. :(

moriarty18891263d ago

Agreed. Driveclub and Motorstorm were great games and deserve sequels. Onrush was fun for me as well. I wonder what type of game he will unveil when the time comes.

Mr_Luke1263d ago

Damn, i hoped a DC or Motorstorm sequel... :( let's see what they can pull out from the hat.
