Remedy explains Quantum Break's resolution and anti-aliasing set-up on Xbox One

Remedy has replied back regarding the 720p output of Quantum Break with the following statement:

Quantum Break’s 1080p output is a temporal reconstruction from four previous 720p 4xMSAA frames. This approach gets us high pixel quality in combination with complex shading and effects, allowing us to achieve a cinematic look. However, varying sample counts between passes and temporal upscaling makes talking about resolution, as it is traditionally understood, complicated in the case of Quantum Break. Since the start of “Quantum Break’s” development, the most important thing for Remedy and Microsoft has been delivering a compelling gaming experience with superior artistic quality. This is what Remedy is renowned for. We’re confident that we have achieved this, and can’t wait to hear what fans think on April 5 when they play the game.

This is the fourth game using temporal reconstruction, right after Killzone Shadow Fall, Fast Racing Neo and Rainbow Six Siege.

freshslicepizza3327d ago

still it does look very good but not as sharp as it could be if it were 900p or 1080p. the lighting and frame rate seem to be right up there though which is good. they have done a good job with the shadowing and particle effects and the level of detail is rather high. pretty impressive i would say for the xbox one.

mark_parch3327d ago

the thing is consoles wouldn't be able to handle all the effects like dynamic real-time global illumination just to name one if they increased the resolution. the game looks stunning and I can't wait to play it

Christopher3327d ago (Edited 3327d ago )

It looks good. I can't say very good. The visual effects are better than normal. I would not say that the level of detail is high, though, except for the particle effects. Otherwise detail is pretty average as far as game world detail and whatnot.

I think a ton of their issues would be solved if they could have pushed lighting effects closer and closer to 1080p, though. That's what creates soft edges on everything in the game and drowns out some of the detail that is there.

Trez12343327d ago

All this talk of grapics are a distraction. The game will b great no doubt n just like Alan wake back then, it was all about the overall game n not the graphics ( great art style tho).

I remember the cut scenes were really bad but the actual gameplay looked better in Alan wake.

rainslacker3327d ago

To me, for this game, the techniques side effects of making a softer image actually works because they are going for that TV show type look. While many TV shows are filmed on video instead of film nowadays, the bigger ones still get film which does give this softer, more cinematic look.

The added AA just helps clean up the edges so you don't get as much of that "rendered" look, so it all comes together nicely. It may not be as sharp as some other games, but it's hard to say that the game doesn't look good, despite being a bit soft compared to other games in the same graphical league. It's just a different presentation is all.

freshslicepizza3327d ago

alan wake also had a low resolution but that game looked like it had a glaze over it, kinda like smeared glasses. but i think with this game once you start playing you won't even notice it that much.

starchild3326d ago

That's true. But there are differences in the particulars of each technique being used.

kowan3326d ago (Edited 3326d ago )

The difference is Shadow Fall is both native 1080p and 1080i(960x1080p). The single player campaign is native 1080p so the game IS 1080p while the multiplayer is like Qbreak, using a temporal reconstruction to make it appear 1080p but is also higher in resolution compared to Qbreak. I think many people here think that Killzone Shadow Fall does not in any way play in native 1080p resolution which is false.

The hype for this groundbreaking masterpiece is so real. Game of the year material! :D

I hope so, we'll see. Honestly I'll be shocked if it doesn't at least receive game of year nominees.

crazychris41243327d ago

Im going to get it once MS fixes the issues with the windows store

christocolus3327d ago

I'm not watching anymore QB videos. I'm already impressed by all I've read and seen so far. The devs at Remedy are super talented ..Just waiting for April 5th now.

lastking953327d ago

Same here, 1 was enough. It's just around the corner, i can make it.....i hope lol.

christocolus3327d ago (Edited 3327d ago )

Someone on Neogaf just put up pics of what looks like a car chase scene from one of the acts later in the game.not sure if its gameplay or a cutscene but I'm done. No more QB videos for me.

meche3343327d ago

Same. it wasn't even gameplay mechanics that sucked me in. It was the story

I hope it will deliver.. we deserve a good Max Payne remake

HansyJ161d ago

We deserve nothing, but the legacy of Max pain deserves it

Cacabunga160d ago

Max Payne fans deserve a good remake. Maybe that is more clear

The_Blue160d ago

' but the legacy of Max pain deserves it"
The Max Payne legacy deserves it.

SoloZelot90160d ago

Okay...so something digital deserves it but something real doesn't?

DarXyde160d ago

I'm not much of a Remedy gamer beyond Alan Wake, but I can't say I've ever heard anyone complain about the quality of the product, whether we like the game or not.

CrimsonWing69161d ago

Um, I’d think that should go without saying… but glad they’re committed to making the quality excellent as opposed to, uh, not.

Gamingsince1981161d ago

Yeah it's kinda weird for them to say that and redundant.

DodoDojo160d ago

Its because they know that they lost trust with the GTA trilogy.

CrimsonWing69160d ago (Edited 160d ago )

I don’t think Remedy had anything to do with that. I get you’re referring to a publisher, but you wouldn’t think a developer would be reassuring people about their game when a different developer made a game that dropped the ball that’s under the same publishing umbrella.

Like, why would From Soft have to assure us that they’re game will be be striving for excellence if Namco Bandai is publishing and they’re referring to something like Unknown 9: Awakening?

This is just a weird statement no matter how you spin it, but also good to know.

jambola161d ago

oh.......thanks
"update, won't suck we hope" lol

VersusDMC161d ago

Well rockstar is paying the bills so they have to project confidence so it isn't cancelled.

What I'm wondering is who is going to voice Max since the og actor died or they are using the old VO like MGS3Remake.

Profchaos161d ago

Rockstar has always had a great relationship with remedy this isn't some new fly by night partnership they have worked together for 20 plus years now

VersusDMC161d ago

Max payne 2 was the last time they worked with rockstar in 2003. And it bombed.

Rockstar asked remedy to check out Max Payne 3 for notes but were not really involved.

So having worked on a project 20 years ago doesn't mean they have been working together for 20 plus years.

swedishMeatwad161d ago

Wow, breaking news! Developer aiming for excellent quality!

SoloZelot90160d ago

Considering some new releases that's good to hear. It is better than aiming for diversity and inclusion.

Remedy is leaving Epic in the dark place to self-publish Control 2

Remedy will self-publish Control 2 as part of a new "strategic cooperation agreement" with Annapurna. A press release accompanying the announcement says Annapurna will provide half of Control 2's development budget, and in return gains the rights to adapt Control and Alan Wake for film and television.

TheNamelessOne244d ago

Devs backing EPIC didn't last long. I just can't understand why ... /s

porkChop244d ago (Edited 244d ago )

This isn't about the store. Epic published the game on all platforms. They want to self publish because they couldn't recoup Alan Wake 2's budget.

Killer2020UK244d ago

...because Epic chose to restrict its PC release to the Epic store and completely restrict it's physical release until later this year.

Vits244d ago

It’s connected, though. They couldn’t recoup the costs because Epic restricted the places and formats where the game could be released, literally removing the biggest PC distribution channels from the equation. And they also sold the game cheaper than a traditional full release, solely to support their statements at the launch of the Epic Games Store that PC games would be cheaper if it weren’t for Steam.

RaidenBlack244d ago

Dang, nice ... Alan Wake II is an amazing game
Can't wait for Control 2 and Max Payne Remakes

DustMan244d ago

Not sure why your getting down voted because you found Alan Wake 2 amazing. I'm in the same boat as you. Can't wait for Control 2 & the Max Payne remakes. Max Payne 1 & 2 were some of my favorite pc games from my early teens lol.

RaidenBlack244d ago

Coz N4G logic.
You cant praise a game if its got no physical release, not releasing on PS etc

isarai244d ago

Maybe this time we'll actually get a day 1 physical release

JEECE244d ago

And hopefully Steam/GOG options on PC.

Single A games and live service games. Those make sense

S2Killinit411d ago

None of it makes sense. But its happening.

Ps5conehead411d ago

That’s up to Microsoft they want return on there investment. From buying up those publishers. That’s what there in business for. And they made a mistake putting day one exclusive on game pass. So now Microsoft wants to profit any way they can.its called buisness . Just like Sony putting games on pc a year are two after ps5 launch.
So if they can make money off PlayStation and Nintendo. They will do that. And I bet soon real soon they will release some aaa exclusives .and I bet one day it will be same day release

TheEroica411d ago

Sony gamers begging for Xbox games.... Who would've thunk it?

BISHOP-BRASIL410d ago

Yeah, because random site off the internet represents all Sony gamers, they have the letter of attorney and all...

S2Killinit410d ago

Lol what a spin. You dizzy?

AsunaYuukiTheFlash410d ago (Edited 410d ago )

We don’t care about shovelwares. Get that junk out of PS5

StormSnooper410d ago

More like MS begging to put their games on PlayStation.

Some of these seem to be exclusive for lack of enthusiasm of the publisher rather than because of deals. A lot of cool indies skip ps for some reason like katana zero, el paso, elsewhere and gunbrela

S2Killinit411d ago

Even more indies skip xbox. We know that right?

Friendlygamer411d ago

Quality over quantity, Microsoft got some really interesting and curated niche games on their machines, maybe in part because of gamepass

S2Killinit410d ago

Quality and MS are not things you bring up in same sentence.

shinoff2183411d ago (Edited 411d ago )

Alot of indies skip xbox to. It goes round and round. Personally I think your off base on that but no need to have the argument.

Friendlygamer411d ago

Between katana zero, valheim, Battletech, el passo... I don't feel off base. maybe ps got a million of light novel games that will never release on Xbox but like I've said, I'm talking about niche games highlights, the 10%.

Heck, it's probably thanks to Microsoft that the s.t.a.l.k.e.r games came to console ps included, meanwhile Sony backwards compatibility continues to be extremely anemic.

And I'm sure most ps5 users are happy to ignore these games and just play wathever new 3rd person action game is trending but it's cool that Microsoft gives some love to smaller audiences and software preservation

shinoff2183410d ago

Again your off base just to be snide. All it's showing though is your ignorance.

One light novels wtf is that even. Ps has plenty of pretty damn good indies.

Speaking of indies and ms being responsible. You know F.I.S.T. of course you do alot of you guys just support gamepass. Well here's a history of Sony being responsible for helping indies. Look up the China project from Sony.

Lastly lol your ignorance showing again. Sony has plenty of games. Personally third person is better then first anyway but that's besides the point. Sony gets so many games that xbox doesn't get because yall don't support the games. Jrpgs being a great example. I personally am not into every Sony first party game. Alot of us aren't. On the other side you don't get to eat often so you gobble up everything. Me personally God of War not my cup, etc. For me I'm into jrpgs and ms just can't touch Sony on those. Again because the Xbox base doesn't support it. Devs dont wanna waste their time or money. Hit me up when falcom develops a game over there.

Speaking of third person narrative games. Aren't yall drooling over hellblade 2. The first one was Sony exclusive at one point. Another not my cup game. Showing we don't have to fall in line and agree we love everything Sony puts out. The facts are they sell though unlike elsewhere(not nintendo)

StormSnooper410d ago

You are same person as GamerRN, yes?

Abnor_Mal411d ago

They really think PlayStation fans would want to play Redfall? Pfft.

Personally nothing on that list would be any game I’d want to play.

TwoPicklesGood411d ago

I’d absolutely love Hellblade 2, Palworld, and Quantum Break on ps5 as I’m sure tons of others would too. There’s nothing wrong with wanting games from another console and its sad that people try to act like they aren’t interested in them.

shinoff2183410d ago

While indont agree with the games. I agree with the point. Your not wrong.

DarXyde411d ago

Sunset Overdrive makes very good sense. Palworld might.

Don't know about the others. Hellblade II does make sense given the original launched on PS4 first. Quantum Break was a massive letdown for me. I absolutely hated the whole TV show thing and I don't think anyone should have to relive that on modern hardware.
