Double Take: Are Miitomo Micro-transactions Too Much?

"Miitomo just launched in Japan and we are already getting reports of how pricing works within the game. As previously announced, the game has no “pay-to-win” mechanics, and it really isn’t much of a game in the first place. However, the title does feature tons of purchases for aesthetic goods, such as new costumes. And these digital goods do not come cheap" -- Nintendo Enthusiast.

Nintendo is falling. Sad to see. When Iwata passed, he took the old school Nintendo with him.

superchiller3390d ago

Yep, but they've actually been failing for quite some time. And unfortunately, Iwata presided over the development of many of their substandard products.

Even though the Wii console was a financial success, it was ultimately just a cheap fad that fizzled out years before its competition. The waggle gimmick and weak, feature-lacking hardware failed to deliver good gaming experiences. So instead of being a shining example of Nintendo's success, it ended up damaging their reputation.

Iwata also presided over the development of the Wii U, and it's clear that he hoped that the same approach would make it a success. Unfortunately, it didn't work, casuals moved on after the Wii, and the hardware proved unable to compete.

I have a strong feeling that the NX will follow the same approach as the original Wii and Wii U; after all, it too was developed under Iwata's leadership. I hope that isn't the case, because Nintendo used to produce great gaming hardware (NES, SNES, and N64 were all great systems).

rjason123390d ago

That's bs, it's because developers don't want to take risks anymore, look at the genesis compared to the snes, just about everything was on the gen was less powerful than snes, but Genesis still got a bunch of support.

It's true that Wii/Wii U were/are an attempt to get the casuals to play games, but Nintendo has always been about making games for EVERYONE to play. One of the only reasons why developers haven't put their games on the Wii U is because it's architect isn't very similar like Xbox and PlayStation, so it's not as easy to port their games to the machine like they're use to.

Philface3389d ago

@Schiller: Why are you still dealing with this. Move on! And you should not buy any NX. Instead buy yourself a PS4, Xbox or PC (if you haven't already) and you'll be happy with it. But most improtantly stop living in the past.

BenRage33389d ago

What?! I'm sorry, but you got it all backwards. When Hiroshi Yamauchi died, that's when the old school Nintendo died. When he ran Nintendo, the company always focused on the strength of the hardware.

Iwata (may his good soul rest in peace) is the one that didn't understand the industry and through his decisions put Nintendo in the position they are in now, which is playing catch up to its competitors. And he was alive when Nintendo planned it's foray into the cell phone game industry.

AWBrawler3389d ago

The nintendoom. Thats okay, A revolution is coming. you'll see.

Lonnie183389d ago

My God they actually worship this guy Miamoto lol. Oh yeah and there will be no revelotion, Nintendo is done, I think the world has put up with them long enough.

AWBrawler3389d ago

I don't worship miyamoto. he's made his share of crap like nintendogs and wii music, but i have been following nintendo closely and i see what they're setting up. That coupled with the rumors. if any of the rumors are true, NX will definitely redefine portables and have an impact on gaming as a whole.

They're setting up amusement parks, going to be making more nintendo stores, getting into mobile, making an anime. There's clearly a revolution coming for them. Things are changing for Nintendo for the better. If you can't admit to that, you're probably just secretly hoping they fail anyway.

Lonnie183389d ago

Your right, I do hope they fail! The world doesn't need Nintendo anymore.

rjason123389d ago

Watch out guys! We got a "real" gamer around these parts, better take cover!

BenRage33389d ago

Yeah, we need to watch out for Lonnie18, he's about to have a revelotion.

BenRage33389d ago (Edited 3389d ago )

You're right Lonnie (that's not even a real name), there will be no revelotion, because Nintendo is not in the lotion business.

Who named you Lonnie? Sounds like an Asian trying to say Ronnie.

Compared to other app games that have charges of $100 and up? Nope. I've played DBZ and Star Wars games that had higher microtransactions than that. Like most app games if you play you can unlock stuff. If you suffer from ADHD or something then you can use a credit card for instant gratification.

They’re being dumb about it, that’s why. They really just need to dump the top ten best sellers on the GBA, upscale the resolution (or not, honestly) and they’d make a lot of money without really having to spend a whole lot themselves.

I’m sure it wouldn’t be impossible to rework some DS games to work as well. Rework Pokemon SS/HG for phones, sell it for 5-10 bucks and call it a day.

badz1491824d ago

5-10 bucks?? are you INSANE?? Nintendo will sell it at the very least, for 40 bucks.

knowing Nintendo.

King_Noctis1824d ago (Edited 1824d ago )

So why did they sell Super Mario Run for $10 on mobile? Or the Pokemon Crystal, Gold, and Silver which cost $10 individually on the 3DS?

ABizzel11824d ago

Aren't they releasing a Pokemon MOBA in just a bit. Does this mean Nintendo is not making the games, but allowing 3rd parties to use their IP's to make mobile games

kneon1824d ago (Edited 1824d ago )

Pokemon is a separate company, only partly owned by Nintendo.

And are you referring to Pokemon Quest? That's already out, I've tried it and it's even more lame than Pokemon Go, though I expect it will be a hit with the 6 year olds as it requires no skill at all, even less than Pokemon Go, and that's a pretty low bar.

Name Last Name1824d ago

He’s talking about the newly announced Pokemon Unite.

ABizzel11824d ago

@Name Last Name

Thank you, Pokemon Unite is what I was talking about they just had a Nintendo Direct about it, and it is coming to Switch and Mobile.

Nintendo is a hardware company thru & thru. The hardware game machines are their bread & butter, unlike Sony & MS. Going mobile means losing their control on hardware profit.

Acecalibur1824d ago

Good because they suck at it. That mario kart was a disgrace.

fsfsxii1824d ago

Mobile competition is stiff, they cant rely on their rip off tactics and profit on a platform they dont own. Stick to selling outdated hardware for premium.

CptDville1824d ago

Thats a good thing. Their mobile endeavour were quite bad.
