Conker is a Sign that Gaming Needs to Let Their Franchises End for Good

Rare's famous squirrel Conker is in Hololens, but no one's happy about it. And his condition shows that the industry needs to know when to call it quits.

Oooooor its a sign to actually make the games people want.

Abash3366d ago

Never thought MS would make use of the Conker IP in such a disgraceful way. I mean, first Conker's Big Reunion and now Young Conker? They should have just let the series stay dead

PeaSFor3365d ago

he dont even look like conker at all minus the orange and yellow color, it look like a crackhead squirel.

breakpad3365d ago (Edited 3365d ago )

...the definition of tragic ..are the people MS hiring for their game division have any relation with games at all ??

XisThatKid3364d ago

They went to the Nintendo school of giving people games they want and they even flunked out of that

hay3364d ago (Edited 3364d ago )

Well, that's a difference of perception, that's how gamers see games:

And that's how corporate drones see games:

There's a little discrepancy leading to unmet expectations.

Exactly

Microsoft talks big about giving gamers what they want but cancelled a Conker sequel years ago when Phil was the head of first party studios along with Kameo 2 and Perfect Dark 2

Now he's in charge he's used Conker like this and exploit him.

They saw how p***** off people were when he was revealed for Project Spark and now they are doing this.

Come on

GigawattConduit3366d ago

If they wanted to give gamers what they wanted, I think they may have fudged just a little bit.

OpieWinston3366d ago (Edited 3366d ago )

https://twitter.com/XboxP3/...
Phil has already addressed this concern.
They were using Conker as a way to show devs of the platforming capabilities. This isn't the Conker reboot they were pushing.

And most will agree that the KI Reboot has been handled perfectly. Plenty of content, a strong roster, constant balancing/meta patches.

And being in charge of first party games meant he had to bend to the lead who wanted to push Kinect which resulted in cancelling our beloved Kameo 2.

Negative nancy Foxtrot always trying to turn things on their head without fact checking.

I'm not happy about Conker but when you're trying to paint a picture of Phil when it's not true is just pathetic.

-Foxtrot3366d ago

@OpieWintson

It's not the point, they are using him to show off tools despite the hate they got when they used Conker to show how Project Spark worked. Then they told us that they are looking into Conker or something along those lines....YET they do it again for something else. Why would you be stupid to do this, why not create a character from scratch, not like much thought went into the design here so a new character would have worked.

He still could have kept one game going when he was in charge. What's the point being the head of something if they don't have no control. Not to mention he was an avid supporter of Kinect...he cancelled it to push Kinect on us himself

"always trying to turn things on their head without fact checking"

LOL...nothing and I mean NOTHING you've said is facts either.

OpieWinston the hypocrite

"but when you're trying to paint a picture of Phil when it's not true is just pathetic"

Sorry I can see his strings and not the messiah you try to make him out to be. His recent comments over the Xbox/PC thing shows his mask is slipping.

Fact is they didn't have to use Conker to show this off but they did...especially after the ProjectSpark fiasco

slate913365d ago (Edited 3365d ago )

Stop trying to make phil the bad guy he clearly isnt, geesh. Im not accusing you of being one-sided cause Ive seen you criticize all sides in the gaming industry. But if there is nothing of conker at this e3 then you might have a point. Us forum crawlers might rant and rave about wanting conker back, but financially they are probably doubting a mass audience to sell a game to.
Just like sony and their teases with spyro. (Dude wearing a spyro shirt to the conference, yet still with no announcement).
Lets let these companies do what they do best and run them.

_-EDMIX-_3365d ago

But what if what they wanted was clearly a good Conker game, not just a Conker game?

Some times I think many on here misinterpret what a company is doing when they stop development of a game or can a game etc.

Would you have liked it if it sucked just because it existed? Consider Naughty Dog canned Jak 4 because it didn't fit what they wanted.

Its not saying the publisher doesn't want to support those older games, its saying they don't want to JUST for the sake of it. They want to produce good games, period.

Look at Ratchet and Clank, the quality of those titles maintained, thus they kept happening. If Insomniac and Sony feel it makes sense for them, they will make it happen, but clearly only if the quality is still their.

So I'm not sure I can fully say MS is not "giving gamers what they want" as gamers still want quality games though.

If Rare currently can't make a Conker that they feel is worthy of the name and really worthy of a sequel, they are correct to can it and wait til that actually happens.

I can't really honesty say I'm upset about that as I'm not really sure why it was canned to really be upset. I'd rather have a real sequel to Conker THAT IS GOOD, then something that is released just for the same of releasing with the name of Conker.

I really can't say MS used Conker in the respect of "exploiting" as I feel many more publishers have milked other IPs to death and just didn't care about quality.

I can't even say the Conker thing on Project Sparks was even enough to call it that.

DLConspiracy3365d ago

The fact that we are seeing them constantly thinking about Conker means that perhaps they are still very much open to a new full game. I think people tend to blow things way out of proportion. All this does is support the fact that people want a full new game. I'm pretty sure after all this is said and done we will have a brand new game in the future.

If they said "hey check out this new conker game you can only play on Hololens" then we might want to freak out. But... they didnt. So people need to chill and be patient. Or just carry on with turning everything into a clue for doom and gloom.

Azzanation3364d ago

@Foxtrot
So your saying MS cant use there franchises in more ways then one? Young Conker isn't the future of Conker, they just need a character for there upcoming AR device. They brought the franchises let them have there fun. Don't like it don't buy it. I am in no rush for a proper Conker game.

Fin_The_Human3365d ago

So far only a few old school franchises have been good with games Killer Instincts leading the way.

Hopefully Sony can prove this article wrong with Crash Bandicoot.

DanteVFenris6663364d ago

does nintendo not exist? nintendo's been keeping their same franchises fresh for decades

USMC_POLICE3365d ago

Agreed also add crash and spyro

Mulando3365d ago

Or, it is just what it is, an early tech demo :)

XanderZane3365d ago

Yes, but they need to do Conker the way everyone wanted him. On the XBox One with a lot better graphics and animation then when he was on the N64 and original XBox. It needs to be over the top and hilariously funny. I don't know why they didn't make a sequel for the XBox 360. The Project Spark version wasn't a real sequel and this Hololens version seems to be a bad looking demo. I'm sure they can do better.

rainslacker3365d ago

Bite your tongue. That's crazy talk!!!

mark_parch3364d ago

its a fucking tech demo for christs sake. why is there so much fuss over it

Snookies123366d ago

This is just a slap in the face to Conker fans. Like, really? If you don't want to make a new Conker game fine, but at least stop with all this crud that gets fans' hopes up.

GigawattConduit3366d ago

I didn't even play Conker that much, but that just looks...wrong. He kinda looks like the 90s EXTREME version of a character, idk

Mulando3365d ago

Tech demo, not more ;)

But btw, you should try some games from the 90s. No, characters back there didn't look like that.

skeetys3365d ago (Edited 3365d ago )

@Mulando - Conker didn't look like that though. It just looks like a really bad artist made him in young conker.

Sciurus_vulgaris3366d ago (Edited 3366d ago )

Some people saw the young Conker tech demo as a sign MS is interested in the Conker IP. I would disagree somewhat, there was the decent but very limited Conker's big reunion, which at least looked and felt like a Conker game. Young Conker has shoe-horned written all over it. Look at my avatar and look at the Young Conker character model, they don't even look like the same character.

Who ever did the Young Conker character design should be fired. I don't get how these companies pay people so much to generate stupid ideas so frequently. I don't think MS has much interest in the Conker IP (they haven't shown much interest in investing in the IP). Heck Conker in a power suit would have made a funny character for Killer Instinct. If no true Conker game is announced this E3, don't expect one ever. This is unfortunate since the character and series never got proper closure.

GigawattConduit3366d ago

Yeah, WTF? They'd bring Arbiter over to Killer Instinct and not HIM?

Sciurus_vulgaris3366d ago

I don't have a problem with the Arbiter in KI. I think it would of been better for the Killer Instinct quest characters to of been from Rare IPs to help promote the studios' planned (implied) 'resurgence'.

GigawattConduit3366d ago

I don't either, it's just weird that they chose him, but didn't think that Conker would be a good fit. Doesn't he have a mech or something?

Sciurus_vulgaris3366d ago (Edited 3366d ago )

He uses a yellow powerloader suit during the final boss fight of bad fur day/live & reloaded. The fight is parody of Ridley vs the Alien Queen.

http://www.stefandavid.com/...

Fin_The_Human3365d ago

Seriously what was MS thinking.

They could have just created some random character for that demo but they had to use the most bad arse potty mouth character that I know.

Sciurus_vulgaris3365d ago

Conker is not a potty mouth character, he seldom swears in Bad Fur Day.

MCTJim3365d ago (Edited 3365d ago )

Sign, another day, another way to hate on MS. This was a demo of young conker on a dev kit for hololens to show devs what they can do. It was NOT a game.....anything they seem to do people want to hate for the complete wrong reasons or purposely hate on them period. Seems like a certain segment likes to stir the pot and step back to watch their crap overflow.

Tobsesan3365d ago

The dislikes on that video are gold :D

Asobo Studios Announces Launch of Three Titles for HoloLens

On 30th March Microsoft began shipping its mixed reality (MR) head-mounted display (HMD) HoloLens to developers in the US and Canada. During its development one studio that’s been mentioned a number of times to be working on several projects was French indie developer Asobo Studios. Three titles that were in production were Fragments, Young Conker and HoloTour. Now the studio has announced all three are available for the device.

How Microsoft HoloLens Could Propel Augmented Reality Gaming

To the delight of many developers and technophiles, Microsoft announced the development edition of its HoloLens virtual reality headset is about to start shipping. The tech giant is also hoping to inspire gaming developers as well.

Each device will arrive packed with a trio of games, two of which were created by French developer Asobo Studio. Those titles are the platform action game Young Conker and the murder mystery Fragments. The third game rounding out the trio is RoboRaid, produced by Microsoft itself, making Asobo the only external developer with hands-on for game development on HoloLens.

Gridknac3339d ago

Could? Outside of some gimmicky stuff on 3ds and ps camera what else is there? I think Halo lens would offer a nice alternative to vr. If it gets the software support.

XanderZane3339d ago

It has a lot of potential. I'm glad Microsoft is getting them out to developers early so they get at least 2 years to work on apps and games for it before it finally launches to the public in 2018-2019.No need to even try to release this in 2016 or 2017, as there wouldn't be much content for it. By the time it does get released, the cost of it will be a lot cheaper then $3000 and I'm sure there will be a ton of improvements. This is very cool, but we still have to wait and see how well VR does for the Oculus Rift, Vive HTC and PSVR first. If those VR units fail to make a big splash, Microsoft may never even release their Hololens.

ninsigma3339d ago

Hololense isn't competing with vr though. Its not even a gaming device. Whether the vr solutions do well or not shouldn't impact whether they decide to release or not.

Fishy Fingers3339d ago (Edited 3339d ago )

It won't. Gaming is essentially an afterthought and an easy way to promote hololens. It has far more commercial applications (like VR) and will not be priced at consumers. People thought O Rift was expensive, well...

travieso063339d ago

im saving for hololones once it release for public. it will be a game changer. like or not

Fishy Fingers3339d ago

At least you'll have plenty of time to save, I imagine several years at best and you'll need it, with the initial dev kits costing $3000.

With traditional TVs and established VR ecosystem, I'm sure some developers will entertain the idea of supporting it.

SmielmaN3339d ago

$3000?!? That price has to come down to at least $600 to be viable as a gaming peripheral. Is the field of view still the size of a deck of cards?

Death3339d ago

No price has been announced. The dev kits cost $3000. If you are a developer you get the hardware, development software/tools and support to go with it. This isn't something aimed at consumer use. Hololens is also a wireless stand alone device with it's own built in processing unit. While it is capable for gaming, that isn't it's primary use.

ninsigma3339d ago

Game changer for Windows. If they can get full windows working in an AR capacity that would be awesome! Be great for rts games too. The minecraft demonstration was pretty cool as well.
