GameTrailers Employees Were Unaware of Closure and Layoffs Until Today

According to GameTrailers' associate editor Ben Moore, the employees at GameTrailers only found out about the closure earlier today, the very same day that the company is shutting down.

GigawattConduit3413d ago

Wow. That's a complete dick move on their part.

Christopher3412d ago (Edited 3412d ago )

Pretty standard, though, when the job involves a media outlook like theirs. You risk telling people when they made the decision and then having people leak it or let people go on the day of (usually with some form of severance, but not sure here).

Edit: Also, remember, the company has a duty to not affect their ongoing advertising agreements by possibly presenting a situation that devalues their agreement in any way. So, leaking that info, definitely would have affected the site in that way.

thekhurg3412d ago (Edited 3412d ago )

Interesting, I never thought about the advertising part of it all.

Kleptic3412d ago

yeah, its a shat move in that sense too...because the ad revenue goes to GT...so the agreements allow them to 'hide' closures and shut downs such as this so that they can continue collecting ad money from publishers until the minute they shut it off...

just saying...i'm aware of agreements like that, and generally how the contracts function...but keep in mind those agreements protect the collector, not the 'people looking to advertise'...GT presents stats to the publishers / ad agencies on the likely amount of traffic they will get...if that traffic dips, the publishers have leverage on the costs...so...a company like GT makes sure that even when the place is on fire...nobody knows until the very last second...so a handful of suits can pocket that incoming money before punching their final time sheet...so to speak, anyway...

Godmars2903412d ago

Except that doesn't make much sense, unless the day it was done was at the end of their commitment to advertisers. Which the first day of the second week of a month doesn't sound like.

If ad dollars was the big concern this should be happening on the last or first of the month.

Christopher3412d ago

***Except that doesn't make much sense, unless the day it was done was at the end of their commitment to advertisers. Which the first day of the second week of a month doesn't sound like.
***

It happened the day right before the latest game releases. Their advertising more than likely revolves around timing it for days that games are released.

Also, regardless of "when" it happens, there's still a duty to uphold advertising agreements. Otherwise they could get sued.

I'm also not saying "that makes it totally right" only that A) this is pretty standard and B) they do have things they are beholden to that the public doesn't even think about or care about.

Sashamaz3412d ago

If you want to quit you have to give them a notice with enough time yet when they decide to close down they just slap it on you right on the day. Reminds me of CGhub shutting down over night.

Christopher3412d ago

***If you want to quit you have to give them a notice with enough time***

Well, you don't have to, but usually it's best if you do.

What a shame. I remember checking GameTrailers every night in 07/08.

Bimkoblerutso3412d ago

But I remember checking Gametrailers every night last July 8th too.

Theangrybogan3412d ago

I'm in Australia so I checked on the 7th of August

Persistantthug3412d ago

Well,
You know the old saying,

Shit always rolls downhill.

eyeDEVOUR3413d ago

Never liked GT because they always insisted on using that media player thats barely compatible with most devices.

KingKevo3412d ago (Edited 3412d ago )

They ran two YouTube channels since they were bought by DEFY to which they uploaded all of their content. Before that Viacom didn't allow them to use Youtbe and they were also the company behind that bad media player.

L0wlifeGamer3413d ago

Unworthy. Im running out of words.

Tallpine3413d ago

Dang. That sucks, I watched a lot of their shows.

IGN acquires, revives GameTrailers, to post game trailers

IGN today announced that it has acquired GameTrailers, the venerable video-centric site that launched in 2002 and was shut down in February by its parent company, Defy Media.

I now have respect for IGN... Took them long enough to get it.

Walter_Official3314d ago (Edited 3313d ago )

Its a good thing they did, but its only because GT has a large fan-base. Which IGN wants.

Edit: @One-Shot Yeah but they will always look for more ways to expand and get more people watching them over Gamespot.

One-Shot3314d ago

Pretty sure they have that already.

SolidStoner3314d ago (Edited 3314d ago )

I was watching sometimes Game trailers... for me gamespot and IGN are to immature and reviewers dont know how to play games there (like they really are noobs, watch any sim racing review.. like done with a controller without a wheel).

Best for gamers to watch uncommercialized private youtube videos like Angry Joe show, inside sim racing etc... they are 4 times longer, played by gamers for gamers!

IGN is like commercial full with childish opinions... thanks for saving GT trailers anyway!

Mr Pumblechook3314d ago

I will give it a go, as long as they don't bring over that complete door knob, Max Scoville from PlayStation Beyond, to completely ruin it with his fake persona and BS knowledge of gaming.

nX3314d ago

I think IGN just wanted their video player.
There's no way anyone ever liked the abomination IGN is using.

Without Bosman and crew this means very little if anything at all.

P_Bomb3314d ago (Edited 3314d ago )

Interesting, but GT's competition buying the name and video library isnt quite the revival I think most fans were hoping for. It's like when WWF bought WCW. Wound up being WCW in-name-only. They buried it, creatively.

Most of those GT guys reformed as EasyAllies I believe. Need them back to make it truly mean something. Not much faith in an IGN "raw/smackdown" brand extension. In the end it's still IGN.

NukaCola3314d ago

You have respect for IGN, an unethical corrupt company of scumbags making a business deal on the downfall of another to get more users to make profit for themselves???

One-Shot3314d ago

Um how is any of that what you mentioned?

Stereotypical_gamer3314d ago

Why would you give them respect just for buying something that someone else created? IGN will ruin gt just like they did there own site. It's just a name now.

Ign influenced reviews? No thanks

demonddel3314d ago

It gave uncharted a 9 does that count for anything or a 10 from them would change ur mind about them

ginsunuva3313d ago

IGN has been shitty way before UC4.

One-Shot3314d ago

What? GT isn't even doing reviews anymore.

Relientk773314d ago

This is cool. I've always liked GameTrailers

Stereotypical_gamer3314d ago

You do understand that they just bought the name right?

ApolloTheBoss3314d ago

Without Mike this news is meaningless.

Good for them. I wish them all the best of luck and every success for the future.

I shall be tuning in to their shows with great enthusiasm :)

SocialShy3372d ago

They always had some great stuff and I think it's safe to say that when GameTrailers shut down that everyone felt it. Won't be shocked to see bigger stuff from them as their goals are being reached quickly.

nix3371d ago (Edited 3371d ago )

one reason i hated Game Trailers last gen was because of their huge bias towards 360. Switched footages, zooming on the grass blades to make PS3 games look inferior was what made me stop going there. Otherwise, i used to go there for my game trailer dosages. and of course, YouTube also happened.

Having said that, i wish them all the best.

SocialShy3372d ago (Edited 3372d ago )

Glad to see the news is spreading.

Mikefizzled3372d ago (Edited 3372d ago )

HuberxBosman confirmed. Shenmue hype engaged. For real though, Bosman's show at its best was one of the best game shows going. Dry, sarcastic and glorious.

SocialShy3372d ago

Shenmue hype is so real. I can't wait for them to actually get their hands on it and see what happens.

Marcello3371d ago

I know what will happen, same as me lots of tears :D

jb2273371d ago

Totally agree...it was actually the only legitimately funny gaming related content I've personally ever seen, and I've seen quite a bit. Never really laughed out loud at anything else, but Bosman had so many great bits & was edited perfectly. Hope they get to be even more free w/ their content & create the stuff they want to create w/o corporate oversight.

Free_Fro3372d ago

Nice, smart move. Wish them the best.

That's great news. I'm pretty sure if those guys get together whatever they do will be worth watching.

Mr Pumblechook3382d ago

A new video-focused channel supported by Kickstarter or Patreon?

I'm happy to watch whatever Kyle Bosman does next.

yeahright23381d ago

Kyle was pretty much the only reason I visited that site. But I'll definitely give this new one a shot.
