There were a few notable anniversaries in 2015, yet this year looks set to be even more significant. Pokemon and The Legend of Zelda are among the major celebrations still to come, but it's also the 25th Anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. Once the sworn enemy and rival to Mario, leading the SEGA charge in the 'Console Wars', for a number of years the mascot has had some highs punctuated by grisly lows, and seen his reputation rise and fall just as dramatically.
The popular Sega franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog, has been really successful in recent years, forging paths for the recent upcoming titles.
These sales surged by 150 million compared to last year.

Definitely agreed. I loved Sonic Spinball back on Genesis. I want a new Mean Bean Machine too, while we're at it!

Nah, Sonic is definitely iconic but it will never be at the level of Mario. Much less surpass it...
They can compete but Mario will always win. Mario and Sonic cater to different fans or fans who like both.
Sonic doesn't have to compete though. Both are their own thing, there's plenty of room for them both.
Thing is Sonic despite the bad games is still an icon as big as Mario, probably bigger cause he's seen more in media than Mario. More cartoons, more movies, more memes. So on that end he's good, they just gotta stop making bad games.
