The Sega Dreamcast 2 project are very much alive, say hello to “Project Dream”

Way back in July this year, I (Robin Ek, The Gaming Ground) wrote a post about the SEGA Dreamcast 2 petition page . Well, guess what? Late last night we were contacted by Patrick Lawson‎ (Lawson‎ a part of the new SEGA Dreamcast 2 super group, which consists of an indie OEM Silicon designer, the founder of the Shenmue 500K group, the SEGA fan behind the Dreamcast 2 petition and some SEGA of Japan interns), and he shared with us some really great news about the Dreamcast 2 project and SEGA with us (TGG).

stonecold33414d ago

would love to see this happened

Simon_the_sorcerer3414d ago

Same here, and I still have my Dreamcast console ;)

Gazondaily3413d ago

Man if SEGA get back into the industry... I would cry tears of joy

zeee3413d ago

Ready to pre order. Like right now. I mean it.

b163o13413d ago

I think if SEGA got back into the game it would be the death of Xbox, and I know "What does that have to do with Xbox" but were talking about a company that goes way back, to a whole nother generation. SEGA name back on a console would sale like hot cakes. They grab up shares in Japan, Europe, as well as the states. Something M$ can't afford, especially after this generation ends. People would jump ship as they've done this generation. Lol I hope SEGA gets back into the console game again...

rainslacker3413d ago

@b1

MS entered the market due to the death of DC. Before that, MS and Sega were teamed up so MS could have it's place in the market. When that failed, or when the writing was on the wall for it, MS started development on the Xbox. Much of what was in the DC made it's way to the Xbox, and many of the core principals of Sega's hardware vision of the DC were what MS used as the basis of the first Xbox.

b163o13413d ago

Oh.......I retract my statements.... (Quietly walks out room)

kickerz3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

I also still have my dreamcast . Man if this is true I am so pumped. You know what would be an amazing idea for the dreamcast 2.... If every single dreamcast 1 game was built into the hard drive. Hell yea :)

garrettbobbyferguson3413d ago

@b163o1

Sega as a company is known for putting out mostly mediocre sonic games now. What makes you think that them returning to the console business would instantly cause the end of one of the three giants? While the dreamcast is a great system, I'm amazed at some of the comments stating they would immediately pre-order Sega's next console.

TheCommentator3413d ago

Rain, I remember when I heard Sega was going software only, then MS showed the xbox controller with the color coded buttons and the jewel in the middle which looked like it would come off so a VMU could be seen. I thought for sure that Sega would partner with them but it never happened.

I don't know if the Sega of today has it in them to be a 1st party studio anymore. Most of their franchises like Sonic have dried up, with only a handful like Panzer Dragoon that would still drum up moderate support. I have a feeling that nostalgia will not be enough to carry them to a successful console business though.

rainslacker3413d ago

@Commentator

I think at that point, MS didn't really have the need to partner with Sega, and MS probably had more interest in going it on their own. The fact that MS provided the OS never really got people excited, and the fact that MS pioneered DC's online component was never attributed to MS, so for them, Sega was getting most of the benefits of lower R&D, while MS was simply a B2B partner for Sega. It didn't achieve the goals they were hoping to achieve in the partnership, which was to be a focus in people's living rooms(something they stated before the Xbox division was ever created...and even before Sony announced the PS1. Sony coming into the market forced MS hand to move forward with their own console after DC was known to be on the way out, because at the time, Sony's name was pretty strong, and Sony was playing up the center of the living room aspect as well.

Anyhow, MS made their own way with the Xbox brand, and for that, I applaud them for not just ripping off everyone else completely. They brought a lot of good things to the market with the OGXbox, and while it can be debated that it would have come regardless of MS entrance into the market, the fact is, is they did push it forward faster than it would have been adopted otherwise. MS isn't all bad despite how I criticize them at times. I actually felt their partnership with Sega was good at the time even, because I knew that MS had the muscle to make gaming more mainstream, and the PC market was pretty strong back then. Unfortunately, I feel their partnership with Sega didn't really culminate into anything important for either them or Sega on the DC itself.

b163o13413d ago

@garrettbobbyferguson

Well considering that there are only 2 major consoles out there I feel as if SEGA could have a lot of potential. I say two major consoles cause know matter what people say or do M$ is NOT considered a major console. I say that cause they've only had one relevant console, the 360, which is stained with the rrod fiasco. Original box was weak with only halo. I owned 2 cause my first ate up my games, owned 360 for about a week before it caught the flu (rrod), never looked at the X1 cause why stay with a company that doesn't have reliable products. Never had any problems with Sony, and the only probwi had out of Nintendo was I had to blow in my cartridges on my original NES. M$ has a lot to prove to me in order to get my money again. So IMO there are only 2 MAJOR company's in the console game, with another that seems to always far short. But hey its just my opinion...

choujij3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

@rainslacker

Actually, Sega announced the discontinuation of the Dreamcast just days after Microsoft showcased the Xbox. While the PS2 was a runaway success, the Dreamcast wasn't exactly a failure until Sega chose to give up on it. Sega figured with MS joining the game and Nintendo coming off the N64, they would lose too much money to withstand the generation. Had they known the Xbox and GC would only muster up 20-25 million each, they likely would have continued on and probably would have ended up in 2nd place for worldwide sales. But hindsight is 20-20. And IMO its a real shame, as no other console had the lineup of quality of games like the Dreamcast did within a year and a half on the market.

Would love to see this happen.

OCEANGROWNKUSH3413d ago

Sega did partner with MS after the death of the DC... most Sega games were Xbox 1 exclusive

AngelicIceDiamond3413d ago

Coming from a huge Dreamcast fan if something like this were real and if it did happen it wouldn't explode like everyone would like it to mainly because of the current market of things Sony and MS machines are household names. Either way I'd still buy Idc I love Dreamcast

bouzebbal3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

so many hypocrits in here.
and just when DC2 is announced then it's automatically doomed.
I would like SEGA to release an HD Dreamcast instead.

@OCEANGROWNKUSH:
Despite being great games all of them (Jet Set Radio, Panzer Dragoon, Shenmue 2), they flop so hard each and every single one of them.
The series stopped after these releases, which is a pity.
I bought an xbox just to play these games (and DOA3 and Dino Crisis) but i believe these exclusivity deals are so clumsy.

sonarus3413d ago

I would bet my money on microsoft before i bet on Sega. Console business requires BIG Money. Not sure Sega has enough capital for any significant competition. Unless they partner with google or apple or something.

Sirk7x3413d ago

@rainslacker

Fun fact: The Xbox was originally planned to be backwards compatible with Dreamcast software. Many of the titles for DC that were in development at the time of its demise were moved to Microsoft's console. Also, the original Xbox was awesome xD Man, I miss that gen. Had a PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube. Those were the days...

TheCommentator3413d ago

Well said, Rain. Very informative post about the days before Xbox.

Choujij, Sega was 600 million in debt when the Dreamcast launched and within 18 months it had recovered 200 million of that debt. It was the misrepresentation of the specs of the PS2, coupled by the 400 million still owed to investors that spelled doom for the Dreamcast. What I mean by that is that while Dreamcast listed the fully lit performance of their machine at 3 million polys per second, the PS2 listed the raw polygon performance of the ps2 as 66 million.
So when the PS2 added anything like textures, lighting, animation, input, etc., the poly count would continue to go down accordingly. Additionally, the Dreamcast ran W buffering which rendered an extra filter pass on aliasing and made every game that had a PS2 equivalent look bettter than it's PS2 counterpart which only ran Z buffering instead. It was Sony who killed the Dreamcast with a smoke and mirrors campaign against Sega.

MehmetAlperTR3413d ago

I want this to happen but i dont think it s DREAMCAST 2.. I think it s project of a new ( Old ) dreamcast game. But i realy want The Legendary Dreamcast to return.. :(

Naughty_Cloud3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

@TheCommentator I'm a big SEGA fan, but its was SEGA themselves that killed the Dreamcast. The bad blood between SEGA of America and Japan. The failures of the 32X, Sega CD, and Saturn all contributed heavily to early demise of the Dreamcast. Yes certain games on the Dreamcast did look a little better than early PS2 games. DOA2 looked better on DC. But the PS2 was a brand new machine, with developers just getting learning the machine. I hate it when people try to blame others for their failures.

TheCommentator3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

Naughty Cloud, I know that the Sega CD, 32X, and Saturn killed Sega, which is why I said they were 600 million in debt in my post. Seriously, read before you post.

Also, PS2 did kill Dreamcast with their PR campaign just like I said. You can go back and look at the sales data both before and after the announcement of the PS2. At that time, all the ignorant people looked at the list of specs Sony compiled to "compare" the two systems. People saw at the PS2 reveal that Sony claimed that the machine would render 33 times the polys, look like Toy Story, and then showed off that stupid "let's render nothing but a human head tech demo". People flipped out. The truth was that the PS2 could only render around 10 million polys in an actual gameplay scenario.

Sony killed all the positive momentum of the Dreamcast with one BS PR event, and that's the facts. I hate it when fans don't know what they're talking about, but assume that they do because they're fans.

XanderZane3413d ago

I still have my Dreamcast, Saturn, Genesis (+32X & Sega CD) and the adapter for the SMS games. I have over 300+ games for these systems. This would be great if they could pull it off and get 3rd party developers on board. Wonder if they will do a kickstarter page or not?

rainslacker3412d ago

@choujij

Yeah, I didn't know the exact time, but knew it came pretty close to one another.

That's why I said that "when the writing was on the wall". Sega pushed for over a year to try and make something happen with the console to get people to buy it. I think even soon after they released it they knew it wasn't sustainable, and no doubt, MS knew this as well.

The DC itself was actually alright, and yes, not really a failure, however it wasn't enough of a success to be able to get Sega where they needed to be. Their money going out through debt and operating costs wasn't being recuperated, and 3rd party publisher support was shaky after their quick turn around on the Saturn which left a lot of publishers upset.

I think MS knew this, and simply started working on their own solution. I can't say if MS and Sega were partnered for MS to take over the console business, and for all I know, MS may have just been willing to purchase Sega since Sega really was close to the point of bankruptcy. Whether they pushed their console out faster due to the DC being unable to keep Sega afloat or not I couldn't say, but the OGXbox was quite literally off the shelf components with only the main board and case being custom parts. It worked for them, because they had every intent to make DX a central part of the Xbox, and history tells the rest of the story.

I do agree that I wish DC had had more of a chance in the market. At the time, it was my favorite console, and still pushed the kinds of games I actually really liked coming off my favorite being the TG-CD. PS was good, and had lots of great stuff on it, but at the time, I was more into the kinds of things DC offered. Granted, PS2 offered much of this in abundance, so i didn't miss out or anything, but there really was only so much Sega could do, and they were in no position to go against the juggernaut that was Sony at the time.

@Sirk7

I heard that as well. But never recall reading any confirmed reports about it. I always felt it was just a rumor born from people's assumption of the partnership between Sega and MS. I may have missed the report though, so I'll take your word for it.

@TheCommntator

My memory of the marketing was a bit fuzzy from back then. I do recall Sony exaggerating, however I don't recall it being so significant.

One thing that I do feel hurt Sega's chances against Sony though was that the media was quite scornful of Sega at the time due to how they released the Saturn a few years before, and then dropping the Saturn so quick for the Dreamcast, despite the Saturn just coming into it's own. This coupled with all of Sega's hardware failures did make them somewhat of a joke when it came to releasing hardware, and obviously that would trickle down into the market itself.

Sega could have pushed back against Sony had they wished to, but they didn't have the means to really compete in such a manner. That was entirely their fault.

Naughty_Cloud3412d ago

@TheCommentator Sony saying the PS2 could deliver Toy Story capable graphics was not the reason for the death of the DC. The immense success of the PS1, being the best selling console of its time, the incredible library and support from developers/publishers was the reason people were hyped for the PS2. It was SEGA themselves that are responsible for the demise of the DC. The could've still supported the system, but they pulled the plug early. It was all SEGA and no one else. You just handle the fact that SEGA buried themselves and try to find a way to cop out.

Dreamcast was a beast!!! That 2k football still brings back memories :(

magiciandude3413d ago

You and me bro! Played the s*** out of that game when I got my Dreamcast for Christmas with NFL 2K, Sonic Adventure, and Toy Commander. Still have my system and the games.

I would cry tears of joy for a Dreamcast 2.

jonivtec3413d ago

So much to remember....Grandia II,Skies of arcadia.....Phantasy star online......let alone the online and so much more.The dreamcast should have succed its so sad.At least i only have good memory's of it.The VMU ;);)

showtimefolks3413d ago

last time i read it sammy sega was worth over 4.5 billion dollars. not sure if that's enough money to come back into business

just like konami sammy sega is also focusing more and more on mobile(without treating their developers like konami that is)

would love to see dreamcast 2 but i just don't see it.

i would like to ask one question though:

do you think it would have made a difference if instead of launching the original xbox that MS bought the dreamcast name and launched a dreamcast 2 to compete with ps2?

just wanted to see what others think? IMO ps2 was so dominate that it wouldn't have mattered as much

Bobafret3413d ago

They might have done better in Japan and abroad.

DarkBlood3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

Sega has a surplus but i forgot what amount it was, either way i believe my friend as he is a WAY bigger fan then i am and the fact that the dreamcast is the only one he got day one

Fullmetalevolust3413d ago

Agreed, make it happen and I will back it up and buy it. They need to have Sega on their side. Without their support, this project is going nowhere.
They have an announcement in 10 days, wonder what it could be.

3-4-53413d ago

omg I would love another Dreamcast.

There is room for 4 consoles in the marketplace, and would put pressure on each one to deliver.

I'd buy em all.

3413d ago
ABizzel13413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

It would be nice to see it happen, but I don't see any room for a 4th console in the current set-up, and unfortunately I see it performing at best on par with Wii U simply from nostalgic buyers.

That being said, if they go in expecting to sell 10m tops, and design a business around that, there's room for it to be moderately successful depending on the cost and hardware.

Make a $199 console, with an off the shelf AMD A10 APU with 4GB of fast DDR3 (GDDR5 would be much better if possible while keeping that $199 price). That way it's affordable, powerful enough to run current games in 720p @ low settings and has the architecture to easily receive PC / PS4 / XBO ports, and should be able to run Dreamcast / Genesis emulation.

It can run most multiplat games in 720p @ 60fps low settings (which at this point are above PS360Wii U).

For example:

Star Wars Battlefront

720p @ 60fps, low settings on this setup (looks good enough to be next-gen)
720p @ 60fps, high settings on XBO (looks great)
900p @ 60fps, high settings on PS4 (looks great)

So it's not too bad for a $199 console.

BeefCurtains3413d ago

I agree with this. It's already a bit hard on gamers to choose between PS4 and X1, or they have to buy both consoles to own all exclusives. Same thing with Nintendo in the mix. Add Sega, and that just really saturates the market, divides gamers even more, and only serves a small population of people who can afford all the consoles.

That being said, if Sega did enter the game, it would probably cause one of the other consoles to fall out of the running. Unless Microsoft wants their next console secretly under the Sega brand to improve their image?

ABizzel13413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

@BeefCurtains

I agree to an extent, but if anyone is forced to drop out it will more than likely be Sega. Again.

Xbox is safe in NA and they have a decent following in EU. Those are the two largest gaming territories and as long as they built a competitive console, offer exclusives, and stay competitive price-wise then they'll always have a market of around 50m - 60m gamers minimum (35m NA, 15m EU, minimum).

If anyone would be threatened it would be Nintendo, because Sega would be Nintendo's complete antithesis. Nintendo focusing on affordable, family, fun exclusive, and Sega focusing on affordable, core gaming, fun, with a few exclusives. This is where someone would have to fold, and honestly it's more than likely going to be Sega, but this battle would likely cause Nintendo to fold as well.

If anything Nintendo needs to work with Sega to make an even better case for the NX. Nintendo and Sega just seem like a good fit for one another. Sonic, Phantasy Star, Yakuza (PS fans would be upset), Monkey Ball, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, The Conduit Team (help with Metorid), The MadWorld team (make a Captain Falcon beat'em up game), Virtua Fighter, Valkyria Chronicles (again PS fans upset), and the Sports Teams (help with Mario sports). Oh and Shenmue (I don't know what would happen here, but again PS fans likely upset)

This is just a good fit, and they can offer DC / SS / SG games via eShop for Power Stone, Nights, and more.

It would make a Nintendo console a much easier buy for many gamers considering you're getting the nostalgia of both Nintendo and Sega in 1 console. But keep the price in the $249 - $299 range.

ABizzel13412d ago (Edited 3412d ago )

http://www.cinemablend.com/...

I don't understand what some people think when designing hardware. The i5 4000 series are great CPUs (i5 4460), but they're in the $150+ range alone. You still need GPU, RAM, a HDD (since it's rumored to have no disc drive), Motherboard, PSU, a case, and a controller.

http://www.tweaktown.com/ne...

The PS4 and XBO are retailing for $300, and the DC2 team has already spent half of their budget on the CPU alone. The rumored GPU is a GT 740, a $90 GPU.

So overall they're looking at $250 for CPU + GPU, at retail prices (since this isn't backed by Sega, they're probably not getting near the same savings Sony / MS / Nintendo get on hardware). The good news is they plan on launching in late 2016 - late 2017, so the GPU architecture will be replaced by

But the most ignorant thing about this is that the AMD A10 7850k APU offers the same GPU performance, less TPD than the current CPU + GPU combo, and has slightly less CPU performance, but only cost $130.

Why on earth would you go with the i5 and 740, when the A10 offers more than enough CPU performance and identical GPU performance at almost half the price.

If they go with that set-up they've ruined any chance for this, because at that point PS4 / XBO will be $249, and only die-hard nostalgic Dreamcast fans are going to want to pay $299 or more for a much weaker Dreamcast 2.

3413d ago
MikleDemi3413d ago

I think everyone would. Their efforts in the gaming industry have been lackluster as of late.
I mean boy, the only good sonic games have been handheld, and I miss the guy.

FlyingFoxy3413d ago

Would love it if they got to revive old classics like streets of rage, splatterhouse, desert strike, road rash etc.. They would have a lot of potential with exclusive titles for sure.

I´m backing this if DC2 takes of for real :3

FlameBaitGod3413d ago

Sega has a $11.6 billion in cash flow.... wtf D:!!!!!

Fireseed3414d ago

The Dreamcast community doesn't really need this, we've already been able to homebrew our own games. As well as compile a complete library of every game released for it. My recommendation if you really love the Dreamcast buy a few to have in reserve just in case your workhorse dies.

3414d ago
Simon_the_sorcerer3414d ago

I actually still have my Dreamcast console (and a spare one). Even so, I have to say that I really liked the thought of a Dreamcast 2. So I´m at least going to give the project a fair chance.

Bobafret3413d ago

Go away with that elitist crap. This is for everyone.

Fireseed3413d ago

Is it elitist to find a Dreamcast on ebay, or your local game store?

Or download a file and burn it to a CD?

Get outta here with your crap. Besides do you honestly think that either

A.) Sega would re enter a market so filled with uncertainty with a new console

or

B.) Spend R&D on a piece of hardware that does nothing but play a niche listing of retro games?

That's insane.

Kalebninja3414d ago

I'm confused.. Is this a fan project? Are they petitioning for Sega to get back in the console game or is this just to play better versions of older DC games?

donwel3414d ago

It looks like the dude heading the petition has some insider information from the looks of the message he sent to Robin.
There may be a good chance Sega are getting back into consumer hardware. The Sega boss (Haruki Satomi) said something about wanting to become a brand people can trust again and said they'd betrayed their fans since the 90's.
Certainly interesting anyway, I look forward to see where they go.

3414d ago
TWB3413d ago

When I heard about this some weeks ago for the first time, it sounded like they wanted a modernized Dreamcast that allows playing old DC games and would have an online service to purchase all DC games to the HDD.

Now for some reason it has turned into a rumor of Sega returning to console business after seeing this project.

Very unlikely and I doubt how well they would manage but like someone already suggested that maybe a weaker but easy-to-develop-to console could do decently.

It's pretty damn good. I'm about 16 hours into it. Lots of secrets and mysteries. I'm on day 14 I think. Still haven't beaten it. Gotten very close a few times. Unlocked many secrets already. Instead of writing down things, I usually take pictures with my Playstation and write on them using the editor, its very fast. There is a small element of luck, but mostly it's about learning and planning and solving puzzles that are bigger than the one room you're in or the item you're looking at. There are so many secrets that some players will never know unless you put in the time and learn and pay attention. It's an eerie and mysterious puzzle game. I think it's addicting and a lot of fun. 9/10

I just got to day 4. First 2 days I started going into it blind, and just trying to remember by memory but got overwhelmed pretty quickly. Got a handy dandy notebook and my notes will definitely help in the long run.

Been enjoying it so far, but with Oblivion dropping and me stupidly picking it up, might take a hit to my playtime on Blue Prince.

I like that critical thinking and puzzle solving go hand in hand, and you're not having your hand held the whole time.

No game is for everyone. We all have different tastes, some have broader taste some have more specific taste and it’s ok either way. Play what you like!

Christopher7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

***The problem is, the game tells you absolutely nothing about what you’re actually supposed to do.***

Getting to room 46 itself is a puzzle and the whole game tells you to solve puzzles.

***But how do you know if something in a room actually has meaning?***

It's a puzzle game. It's not just going to hand you the answer. I guess this is the point where we get to people who want an NPC to tell them how to solve the part of a puzzle and the people who truly want to figure out the puzzle for themselves.

This makes me feel like some gamers are becoming more like my nephews, they're not solving problems, they're just looking for youtube videos of people who have solved them and following what they did.

P.S. Please don't write another first paragraph like the one in this again. It really sets a tone that you don't know what you're doing.
