It's probably the quietest way the developers could bring the game over if you think about it. square said years ago if they recreated just midgar it would consume a lot of space and effort. every location. nobody would be able to at least taste the game without waiting some years.

My prediction is that each episode is $60 and that over the course of development Nomura will quit to work on another project and Sony will show this game at every single conference that they have for the next six years (and beyond, if we're being honest with how long this game will take to make).

I don't believe for one second that this game will be finished on PS4 either, if they're going the episodic route. The later episodes will be released on PS5 which will not be backwards compatible, but Square-Enix will just so happen to delay the later episodes just long enough to remake/remaster the earlier episodes of FF7 Remake for the PS5. That's right, they're going to remaster the remake.

And the sad fact of it is that what I just wrote is a perfectly realistic prediction. FF7 was a huge game and I'll be shocked if the first episode is anything more than Midgar, which will probably release sometime in 2017.

Wildcard prediction: By the time they get to episode 3 or 4 of the Remake they'll turn to crowdfunding to pay for later episodes because the fanbase will be too invested in the project to say no.

Also, don't forget that Square-Enix themselves said a couple of years ago that it would take them 10 years to remake FF7. Well, I hope you guys are ready!

Weren't they trying to do this with Hitman as well. It seems like Square is testing the waters of a new business approach. They want you to rush and give them your money by paying now so they can give you the content later and they don't have to wait to get your money. I'd say they will be releasing multiple games all within the FF universe, with this remake of the original FF being the base game that establishes the storyline (and is still a remake of the entire first game), with subsequent games being remakes of other FF7 games or even new games entirely that take place in the FF7 universe.

Some of you need to lighten up. Jumping to the worst conclusion automatically and bashing the company for what could very well be a misunderstanding on your part isn't warranted. Let them specify their plans before hating on them.

1. Each part represented a game in the FF7 universe.
2. New parts were added as future releases.
3. If they do split the game into chunks, they add enough new content to further flesh out the story that it justifies the cost of the game, or they sell each chunk for cheap.

After reading the texts, the size of the game data is too big to fit into one game, so they're splitting it up. They did say that new content is being added as well, so perhaps they're expanding the FF7 universe and storyline to the point where multiple games will be necessary.

In the end it financially makes more sense for them to give this game the Hobbit treatment. Games today are incredibly expensive to make thanks to the demand of high fidelity graphics. It makes more sense financially to sell the game in chunks, and given the level of fidelity I'd say full price $60 chunks.

Like the Hobbit release, you'll most likely see things changed, altered, and added to create 3 act structure "complete" games.

It doesn't make financial sense for SquareEnix to develop a game over 6-7 years packed with high end graphics, sound, and everything everyone remembers from the original requiring hundreds of millions of dollars only to sell a 3-4 disc game for $60 a pop.

Also most tie in Final Fantasy 7 games were licensed to Sony consoles. So in order for them to be seen on the Xbox One or the future Nintendo console they would need to be remade--not just given HD treatment. It would be a huge cost in itself.

Yeah, this announcement was a massive screw up. They can't drop a vague description like this and expect us not to freak out. They didn't say "episodic", but rather "multi-part". There's at least two reasonable, positive interpretations of that.

1) They're trying to replicate the original division of the game across three discs with the intent of packing as much as possible into each disc.

2) They plan to include additional content from other entries in the original set of games.

I'm not saying either of these is right, but they are possible given the weak description. Alternatively, they might be going straight episodic in the modern sense.

It wouldn't be impossible, but since they're probably going to make a lot of the dialogue scenes into full blown, fully rendered high quality movies with lossless audio, it will take up about 80%+ of the Blu-Ray space available.

They could also trim back the number of unique textures. The midgar scenes shown showed tons of those that are likely only used once or a few times throughout the game.

I dunno. I've always seen the original game as a single experience. Maybe it's just because that's the way I originally experienced it, and splitting it up just seems unnatural.

I can think of many reasons both technical, and financial why they are doing this, but it still doesn't sit right.

Some people won't care, and I really don't either, but it is really a groan worthy piece of news to put out there...and lets face it, this release is kind of ambiguous on what it means since there are no details.

As far as if it'll be worth the money. Hard to say. Half of FF7, if represented in full, and possibly added to with new content, is actually much more content than a lot of games these days...except in the JRPG genre where this game is competing. There are even a couple logical break points to the story where it makes sense to split it up.

But doesn't mean I really want to experience the game that way, which means waiting longer until all parts are available to finally get to play it, which would be the case either way for a single release.

All this may not be what it seems, but again, that's SE fault for not actually giving more details on what it means. This announcement is sort of a huge thing to not give the details for.

Truth be told, this may be one of the few ways to make the game with all the same level of content it had before, cinematic moments take allot of resources, and it would be likely they would have to boot some moments out. Time = Money, the time it takes to render a single HD object is far higher then the cost of rending an entire room and some buildings in the PS1 era.

So the reason I said cost is not due to the cost of packaging the game, but the cost of scaling the entire world of FFVII into an HD era, with the same level of content is not the package. But the time in development with salary of each person rendering, THAT is where development cost comes from.

A developer makes 50k a year (Not sure how much they make, just a random number) then, you have, lets be sparing here, 50 developers working on this game, again, very conservative number of people working on it.

Now, for those 50 alone you are at 2.5 million paid, that is excluding different wages, directors and producers wages out of that. That is a single year of work though, also barring any over time.

Lets say they did it in one go, 50k x 50 = 2.5 million x 7 years = 17.5 Million, just in wages, nothing with software upgrades, mo-cap, R&D, event costs, travel costs (Artists travel to get details from similar areas as seen in the game)

Now, there are far more then 50 people making this game. And the scale is massive. So you need more people to handle that, because rending a wall or light map alone is far harder now then it was back then.

Thus leading to needing more time, or more people both of which cost the company. This way they break it down to be manageable, by turning a profit faster and putting it back into circulation.

Packaging is by far, the least of SE's concerns when it comes to the cost of the game.

Think about it, over the years the Final Fantasy VII story line has grown so much that it would be so long to make it into one game. It's no longer just FFVII... I want them to tell the story in the best way possible and make each episode a different section in the FF7 story line. I don't see anything wrong with them making money off of this. lol some of youmake me laugh. I'm a HUGE FF fan and I think this could be a good idea. FF15 is not even out yet, Kingdom Hearts 3 is not even out yet.....so how long do you think it would take to make ANOTHER AAA RPG once those have been completed....especially one as big as FF7? If they're going to have FF& be completely open world, this game won't be out for probably 5+ years! (hell, the original FF7 took 3 years to make...and was not open world, didn't have voice acting ,probably in multiple languages and didn't look a 10th as good as this seems to)

Here's an idea: people who are pissed...wait until every single episode is out and comes in a eventual bundle (see you in about 5+ years :-))

I normally hate things like this....but I know I would be waiting a bloody long time for this game to be completed if I waited for the full version. But, like I said, if you're angry, by all means wait until all of the episodes are released in a bundle.

Totally fine with them splitting up FF7Remake. Remember guys. The original game came on 3 discs if I remember correctly. SquareEnix says there is not enough space on a bluray disc for the entire thing with the quality they have at the moment. This is the only way of getting the entire game. Solution: Download from PSN, then you will not have to swap discs, just make sure you have enough space. Because this game will be huge.

Im literally sitting here laughing my ass off at the people defending the long development time of the game.need i remind people that this is a remake...story is set in stone, character design updates has already been concepted for advent children and crisis core and environmental concept are already in place from ff7 and the music has been remastered so many times no new tunes needs to be added.

From what i saw in the psx trailer we can already establish that midgar section will also be in parts(probs finshed the first half when avalanch gets wiped out"and the next episode will be meeting aerith and dressing up and third section escaping midgar).

I think people need to come together and let square know that this is not what the fans want. Its a litteral slap to all the fans after they showed their excitiment in a trailer. I feel espcially sorry for the guy who was crying at the end of the first trailer...now he must be crying for another reason.

On gameinformer.com they posted an update thats states its not episodic like life is strange .. They said its a large project and each game will be a complete game. Im glad they cleared that up.

I feel like square is REALLY screwing this up for themselves, and fans. FF7 in 1997 set off a chain reaction of RPG goodness for the PS1 and PS2. It wasn't the first RPG for playstation, but it definitely made a LOT more fans. What we want is a scene for scene remake with beautiful graphics that matched the old cutscenes to make the experience seamless. What we are getting is several action RPG games that will do NOTHING to get excitement back up for the JRPG. No new life will be breathed into this dying genre. That is sad.

This is what they mean by a multi-part series, what i'm thinking is the game will be broken up like 13 was with each game acting as a stand alone game, focusing on different game play mechanics & such. like how 13-3 focused on a bigger world that third game here might focus on the overworld & air ship stuff. the first game will focus on the towns & such & the second game focusing on the combat maybe even bring more turn based stuff into the mix.

They need to specify and give more details on this asap.
