Why The Witcher 3 Winning Game of The Year Doesn’t Really Matter

The Game Awards 2015 took place this week and CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt stole the show and walked away with a few awards in hand, but that’s not all it took.

Mmm the internet people will always disagree or get butthurt when their favorite game doesn't win and trash the winner. It happens in Baseball and every other medium too.

I remember the GTA5 fanboys declaring GTA5 as winner because it's GTA, and then TLOU outta nowhere wiped the floor with it and Bioshock Infinite. Lots of haters still trash TLOU calling it overrrated and how their game should have won and that doesn't matter. TLOU proved it was a masterpiece and also proved exclusives can be also big contenders againts big games like GTA.

And after all that overwhelming recognition, TLOU reached another milestone in sales. It should be closed to 9 million by now, if not more. So, GOTY winners do get more attention than the nomines. We'll see Witcher 3 getting a new milestone as people in the show and the internet people that didn't play it will find out what's the hype about. And I hope they do because W3 is a another Masterpiece.

What? Bioshock infinite is one of the most pseudo intellectual tripe that came out that year. TLOU was better than GTA V & Bioshock infinite but don't talk down in GTA V when it was better than Bioshock infinite.

Yui_Suzumiya3430d ago

Every GTA is pretty damn boring. I'll take a BioShock any day over that crap.

sullynathan3430d ago

Nah you just like crap in general. Bioshock infinite is a bad game, ãt least gta v has some merit to itself.

BeefCurtains3430d ago

Winning GOTY matters to the developer. I don't think this award is meant for the gamers...

The game that "you" like winning GOTY shouldn't matter to you. That's a childish sentiment.

@Beef Why are you replying to me?

The difference is TLOU did something new. Witcher 3 is pretty - oil painting pretty- but pretty. It still doesn't look better than every other game this year. People are nuts saying stuff like that. It is way more scripted than Fallout 4, I challenge you to save scum Witcher and try finding things in different states - it doesn't happen. It was an AMAZING game for CD's first open world attempt. But it was not game of the year - not by a long shot. That honor should have belonged to a series that actually reinvented the wheel like Phantom Pain - not one that adopted the wheel.

Grap3431d ago

Phantom Pain reinvented the wheel lol, one of the best joke i have read today.

AtariFanboy3431d ago

MGSV? Hell Fallout 4 and Bloodborne will win GOTY before MGSV wins it. Give credit where credit is due, The Witcher 3 a great game and deserves all its praise.

Lenns3431d ago

GOTY does not belong to a game that was unfinished, repetitive and had no story.

Yui_Suzumiya3430d ago

Phantom Pain was the biggest disappointment of the year. Fallout 4 is my personal favorite of the year but I'd give GOTY to Bloodborne or Witcher before Phantom Pain and I haven't even played them yet!!

The Witcher is an incredible game, Presentation, Gameplay, Story, Art Direction, Soundtrack, besides the fact there was a ton of FREE DLC before the bigger pay for pieces.... Well deserved Game of the Year....Other publishers should take notes on how it should be done....

_-EDMIX-_3430d ago

Same can be stated about many games this year. Mind you, Witcher 3 launched with bugs and still currently has lots of bugs and some major glitches that out right stop quest from being beaten or even played.

Many games also give out free DLC bud, Battlefront is giving out free maps, BF4 is still getting free content, again....many games get free DLC.

Many of your reasons for why it deserves that can legit go to many games this year.

No one needs to take "notes" from that team, they did a good job yes, far from great. Its still getting patched, they were not the first to give free content in fact Witcher 3's free content isn't even that great compared to other games that are giving entire missions, maps etc for free, the piece meal they gave out isn't that crazy bud.

Many great games came out this year, from Fallout 4, MGSV, Bloodborne, Until Dawn, Xenoblade and yes, Witcher 3, but I don't believe 1 game this year really goes above others by that much, all have some faults, all have some issues with bugs etc.

This is one of those years where many, many titles can be considered GOTY. I like Witcher 3, but my broken quest, corrupt saves etc don't just suddenly make me scream over the roof tops that its GOTY.

Its a good game, i can't say GOTY based on lots of serious issues that still unfortunately need patching. CDPR still has a ways to go as some major flaws exist in Witcher 3 that I had a strong feeling might due to the team being new at the open world concept.

Cyberpunk 2077 will easily be that teams shining crown as they would have learned so much from Witcher 3's development.

TheRacingX3430d ago

There were 5 quests added along with weapons and armor, along with additions to the gameplay.... ask EA or activision about "cosmetics" they put a price tag on all of that.... The DLC that cost money are major expansions to the game , not a couple of maps or some "on the disc" unlockable....

BallsEye3430d ago

I believe it was the first technologically next gen game this year. What CD Project Red pulled off is simply amazing. It's their first open world game and they did it way better than Bethesda, the former king of open world RPGs. I mean, game is this beautiful, has so much simulation going on, and in the same time you can enter basically any super detailed interior without loading screens. Small details like people running for cover under the trees or roofs when it's raining are most welcome. Witcher 3 is the GOTY of 2015.

DJustinUNCHAIND3431d ago

Game of the Year awards are like T-ball trophies.

Everyone gets one and they don't mean a damn thing.

How many GOTY editions of games come out 6 months after release?

All that being said, Witcher 3 is the best game released this year.

Cohagen4203431d ago

No, not everyone gets one and GOTY edition is a promotion used to sell dlc content with the main game, wth are you talking about lol.

sullynathan3431d ago

Everyone does not get a GOTY award

Vhampir3431d ago

I wonder if anyone even thinks about who determines the winner. It's like the oscars, the academy decides who gets a gold trophy.

Eizhale3431d ago

Prefer Fallout 4 myself but Witcher 3 was great also.

VerdicLinwe3431d ago

Witcher 3 is good, but it's becoming seriously overrated.

WellyUK3430d ago

can't be any more overrated than MGSV already is.

Gwiz3431d ago

In the end it doesn't matter, sales do matter. In that regard this game winning GOTY is well deserved just by the passion of the team behind it.
They add so much content from the get go with letters thanking their fans and giving great support when it comes down to fixing issues.

They really listen to feedback, very rare these days, keep being who you are CDPR.

Modders deserve recognition at The Game Awards, too

Mods represent some of the best work happening in video games. These additions have allowed folks to introduce anime boys to Stardew Valley or put Margaret Thatcher’s grave in Skyrim because modding has become a central part of gaming culture and development.

One Game is Already a No-Brainer for Multiple Categories at The Game Awards 2025

The Game Awards 2025 isn't until December 11, 2025, but Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is already an obvious choice for multiple categories at the show. The Game Awards is one of the biggest annual events in the gaming industry. Each year, millions of gamers tune in to see big world premiere reveals and find out which games take home its various awards.

The Game Awards has been a massive success and it just keeps getting bigger. However, it has also received plenty of criticism. There have been complaints about games getting snubbed at The Game Awards, as well as eyebrows raised at certain nominees, like when Elden Ring DLC was in contention for Game of the Year at the latest event. Some have also taken issue with the nomination cut-off date, as games from mid-November to the end of December are not eligible in their year of release and instead have to wait for the following year to get nominated. There are times when this has led to titles getting overlooked, but that hopefully won't happen with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
