PSX 2015: Shawn Layden Trolled Us All with Crash Bandicoot Shirt

Push Square: "Not like this, Shawn Layden! We were starting to really like SCEA's new president, but you absolutely can't walk on stage at a PlayStation press conference wearing a Crash Bandicoot t-shirt if you're not going to… Y'know, at least announce that the orange furred favourite is making a comeback."

That's messed up. Why even wear the shirt and get fan's hopes up? There's people that have been waiting on a new Crash game for years

Mankey3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

Playstation E3 2015 >
Playstation E3 2013 >
PSX 2014 >
PlayStation E3 2014 >
PSX 2015

Oh and fit Paris games week into that equation.

I guess it's just hard to top the fatality winning moves of Sony in 2013's E3, their childhood dream fulfillment of E3 2015 or the awesomeness of seeing smaller things we had all been asking about for years finally come in PSX 2014.

This year was OK, but just not the same.

breakpad3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

i thought they would reveal it ..but damn no , still he keeps the rumors alive and that s a good thing

DarkOcelet3064d ago

GUYS!

Remember when Square trolled us with FFVII port for PS4.

Yeah, Crash Bandicoot for PS4 is coming and it will be at E3 2016. MARK MY WORDS!

breakpad3064d ago (Edited 3064d ago )

@^ most likely ...these multiple references cannot be just for nostalgia

freshslicepizza3064d ago (Edited 3064d ago )

it's probably to highlight you can play the ps2 classic games for $15 each on your ps4. then again he was seen with phil spencer so maybe he stayed overnight at his place and borrowed a shirt.

Bansai3064d ago

Sony put Crash in 2013 ad and still nothing, so I'm not gonna fool myself any longer.

Ricegum3064d ago

Lol @ moldybread still attempting to stealth troll. Get back to your Microsoft articles you.

bouzebbal3064d ago

Funny people want crash so bad and the day it's revealed and finally out no one would buy it.
You want Sony to make it happen ? Go support Tearaway and the next Ratchet. Show platformers are still relevant.

VforVideogames3064d ago

So now Shawn is doing what Phil is doing ? here we go again with xbox paving the way...

this is just a thought...what if it was a small way of saying it is happening but they can't talk about it yet? Sony knows how important that game is.

PS4XBOXONEPC3065d ago

there had to be a reason he wore that shirt,it wasn't to troll us trust me.

Thatguy-3103065d ago

That's the way I took it. Just like what happened with the ff7 port last psx which led to the real remake announcement at e3. Have no doubt the game will come.

Fatdrinkofwater3065d ago

Something is in the works for sure. Be it a cameo in a game or a new crash or a crash bandicoot collection or something. It reminds me of phil spencer wearing a battletoads shirt before we heard about rare replay and a cameo in killer instinct.

jmac533065d ago

Yeah, I find it hard to believe they would be vindictive with getting fans hopes up when there was nothing.

SoapShoes3065d ago

He wore a Kratos shirt last year and we know another GOW is in development...

-Foxtrot3065d ago

Didn't they do the first hint of the game in the PS4s launch trailer. That was years ago

Could have given us a teaser by now

Only thing I can think of, which I doubt, is that it's being made by ND but because of Uncharted 4 they want to focus on that.

Chevalier3064d ago

This seems to be awfully similar to when Square announced FF7 and trolling then later at E3 officially announcing the FF7 Remaster

DarXyde3064d ago

Never say never. Sony and Activision have been on pretty bright terms lately.

breakpad3064d ago (Edited 3064d ago )

yes ..the game is most likely coming on PS4 , the only thing that remains to be seen is if the game will be Sony made and exclusive(hell yeah) or Activision made and multi -total -mediocrity

part of me believes that sony is holding back huge announcements for e3 2016. MS brought their A game and sony brought their A+ game. i think 2016 e3 will be epic

still would have loved to see atleast sony bend's new IP or god of war(which btw was confirmed after last years PSX)

the way activision and sony are as media right partners, i can easily see activision selling crash back to sony

sk8ofmnd3065d ago

Lol hes definately getting the stink-eye from gamers.

Erik73573064d ago

Well they wore a god of war shirt last year for playstation and didnt reveal it sooo?

Majin-vegeta3064d ago

Oh but they did reveal it...just not how people wanted it to.

http://www.ign.com/articles...

rainslacker3064d ago

Weren't they hyping up the GOW3 remaster though?

Ezz_Snake3064d ago (Edited 3064d ago )

when he entered the stage i screamed and wake all the house saying Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas h

and then

Nothing, that moment oooooh :(

Realms3064d ago

I think Sony has already made a deal with Activision but why would they say anything until the time is ready by all accounts both Sony and Activision would both benefit from by brining this beloved mascot back to the forefront.

S2Killinit3064d ago

Thats what i think as well. Its a tease but its intended to get us thinking.

ocelot073064d ago

Maybe it is to plant a seed. Something to get us guessing and talking about for a bit. Then come E3 they announce a new Crash game.

Or maybe he really was just trolling.

equal_youth3064d ago

I would say it's clearly a tease just like FFVII PC Port was a tease for Remake.

forgetmenot3064d ago

This! Stop playing with people's emotion when it comes to these classic but also as fans we need to be upfront with these companies do you want new ips or more sequels/remasters.

fitfox3064d ago

Id rather have a new jack game instead of crash

OB1Biker3064d ago (Edited 3064d ago )

'We were starting to really like SCEA's new president, but..'
Actually I start to really like him ; way better than the suited guy talking for 30mn at E3 last year.
Wearing a Tshirt with an iconing Playstation character is cool and show Crash is not forgotten or swept under a rug.
who knows what the future holds, but hoping for a /reveal in the show because hes wearing a Tshirt is ridiculous like do you think he would have had a FF7 Tshirt on at E3 before the reveal and spoiling the surprise?

styferion3064d ago

Well, seeing how Sony and Activision are getting along nicely these days, what with Sony became the new CoD home and sponsoring CoD world league, I'd say the possibility of Crash coming back is quite big.. who knows, maybe Crash is part of the CoD sponsor deal?

nerdeu3064d ago

YinYangGaming3065d ago

Just made the show even more disappointing

DigitalRaptor3064d ago (Edited 3064d ago )

Are you kidding? This practically confirms Crash Bandicoot is coming at E3 2016. Just because they didn't explicitly confirm it doesn't mean it is to our detriment. Some people just want to say screw you to Sony without actually using their brains.

Shawn Layden wore a Vib Ribbon shirt - WE GOT VIB RIBBON.

Shawn Layden wore a God of War shirt - WE ARE GETTING A NEW GOW GAME.

What do you think is next?

Hashimoto trolled us with Final Fantasy VII port at last year's PSX. We got FFVII Remake announced at E3. Shawn Layden trolls us with Crash Bandicoot at this year's PSX. What do you think is in the works for an announcement at E3 2016?

I swear... some people on this site just want it spelled out to them.

Quatron3064d ago

And considering that Sony and Activision are in bed with each other these days, (Destiny ads and Call of Duty DLC coming first to Playstation) something good could be coming for both Crash & Spyro. Maybe in E3 2016. I'll hold it to them.

Relientk773065d ago

Shawn you really did tease us though with that shirt. Maybe it is a tease and we'll see Crash at E3 2016

showtimefolks3064d ago

i think there is hope now, we seen the troll attempt now maybe they will finally deliver the news at e3

TWB3064d ago

Too much hopeful thinking, but it seems all too odd that there has been so much teasing or just some peculiar things going on.

Wasnt there a time at one point where Sony wasnt allowed to use Crashes likeness in any of their promo material because Activision has the rights?

Well, he used the shirt so its a tease and could be a hint...

Or I simply dreamed that.

Majin-vegeta3065d ago

I find it rather funny peoples jimmies have been rustled by a shirt lol.

Jalva3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

What's your opinion on the actual conference?

Majin-vegeta3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

Not too bad nor too good. They could have done less with the jokes and crap. But they delievered on my personal enjoyment of games.

KOF14
SF5
UC4
R&C
NIOH
Yakuza Zero

@Jalva

Oh I'm sorry I didnt know a game had to be new in order for me to enjoy it GTFO lol.

To each his own.

Jalva3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

And not a single one of those games is new...

@your edit:

I'm not saying they have to be new in order to be enjoyed, why are you twisting my words? What I'm saying is that all the games at PSX that you like have been announced a while ago, so doesn't that make the show kind of disappointing for those people who were expecting new AAA games like Sony heavily implied? Your original comment was trying to imply that Shawn Layden's shirt is the cause of all the disappointment when it's really only one of the many reasons people are upset, the fact of the matter is that the conference was nowhere near as good as what people were expecting.

MasterCornholio3065d ago

@Jalva

Whats wrong with showing old games at a conference? I mean the competition did it before so why cant Sony?

Jalva3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

@MasterCornholio

I didn't say there was anything wrong with showing old games at a conference... what I'm saying is that they didn't really show any new AAA games like people were expecting, where's God of War 4? where's Sony Bend's new game? where's Sucker Punch's new game? Unless you express your repressed disappointment and make your concerns known then next year's PSX will be just as disappointing, I'm not hating on Sony, but I mean c'mon, let's be honest here, that was a highly disappointing conference...

Sevir3064d ago

Meh, we didn't need That dumb boring woman talking about Call of Duty and Battlefront... Just show the DLC for both and get her off the stage... That time could have been screen time for 2 new IPs from Sony Bend and SSM. The fat princess announcement could have been saved for a PS blog post yesterday and that time could have been used for something else...

I liked Ni OH, Ni No Kuni 2, And FF7 but most everything else was meh. Last year's show was better.

XabiDaChosenOne3064d ago (Edited 3064d ago )

@Jalva Dude, If you are going to concern troll, at least make a new account so others don't have access to your comment history. Your "critiques" are invalid.

rainslacker3064d ago

Ni Oh has only had a teaser so that's pretty new.

Ni No Kuni 2 is new.

SF5 had new stuff announced for it.

UC4 has everyone's attention either way, so might as well show something.

Yakuza Zero localization is pretty big for some people.

Pretty sure many of those VR announcements were new.

Day of the Tentacle remaster? Yeah crap game there.

I hadn't heard of that Zodiac game before, it's niche, but it's on my radar.

Full Throttle was unexpected, and that's going to be exciting to those old school gamers...btw, it's an awesome game.

Psychonauts...OK that was rumored, and can't recall if they showed anything, but it was at least confirmed.

A FF7 trailer with game play clips...yeah no one would want that.

I'm sorry. I understand it isn't their best conference ever, but it's not like they showed us nothing but stuff we already knew about, nor did they show nothing that wouldn't be exciting for some people. Just because they didn't show some amazing new game you were hoping to see because some website decided to put up a predictions article, it doesn't mean that the show was terrible.

It was rather improperly paced, and sluggish at times, but the games were certainly there.

Seriously, what more could you ask for that isn't just you being all whiny hoping to get what you want? Sony will show stuff when they're ready, and not before just to placate the forum complainers.

I feel like I want to cry but can't.

You know that little tease had me wondering whether Crash would close the show in a very surprising way. it even distracted me from all the indie and VR galore just for nothing in the end.

It's a slap to all us. They know we've been requesting Crash's comeback since that yet another Crash tease in that PS4 Greatness Awaits ad of 2013, and this is how they troll us.

it was horrible, just like the entire show. Uncharted 4, Final Fantasy, and Nino Kuni II weren't enough. Where is the rest of Sony Studios?

#PlaystationExperience is a wolrwide trend on Twitter and many are writing dissapointing tweets to Shu. This show is Playstation's Nintendo E3 2008

TripleCs3065d ago

I will guarantee you that Crash will be shown next year. There's no reason they would keep on teasing it if it wasn't making a return. Keep your hopes up and be patient. I have a feeling Sony is going to blow us away at next years E3.

Psychonaut8543d ago

If you actually read the article it’s really insightful as to the state of the industry. You might not like the way certain things are going, but it’s a good look as to why.

Tacoboto43d ago

"For single-player games it’s not the same exigency [as Live Service]. But if you’re spending $250 million, you want to be able to sell it to as many people as possible, even if it’s just 10% more."

The most I ever see is a shorter window from PS to PC. I never see Sony releasing on Xbox or Nintendo, even for their GaaS titles.

Abnor_Mal43d ago

As it is right now Sony might feel that the cost of making games is not yet so high that they have to expand beyond the platform they have already started expanding on meaning pc.

When the cost becomes beyond $300 million I’m sure more platforms will start to receive something.

rlow142d ago (Edited 42d ago )

Business is business at the end of the day. In the short term I agree with you. The long term???? If you go back just 4-5 years ago, some on here swore that Sony would never go pc or day one. Yet we now have Sony games on the PC and day one courtesy of Helldivers 2.

My point is never say never, because the way everything has been shifting. I don’t think anyone really knows where it’s going to end up.

Ironmike42d ago

I agree siny start releasing on pc a lot earlier the big exclusives are fortune to make

Former PlayStation boss gives the games industry a stern talking to about acquisitions

The former PlayStation CEO has now explained why he thinks games conglomerates getting bigger and bigger, as a result of buying smaller studios, is bad for the industry.

DaCajun180d ago (Edited 180d ago )

He currently works for Tencent, the worst offenders of what he's preaching against. That is some serious hypocrisy, Not to mention they are just lackeys for the Chinese government. Hard for me to trust him anymore, in my opinion.

"Nobody cares"

Yeah... says the guy who congratulates himself and pats himself on the back for Insomniac´s acquisition, calling it his "biggest achievement" ahead of Playstation.

Though competent, Layden is also narcissist, arrogant and a hypocrite, since his previous actions don´t reflect what he´s preaching now.

BrainSyphoned181d ago

Stop talking about yourself. Pot, kettle, rusted peice of hypocritical trash.

Lightning77181d ago

How so? He was instrumental to PS4 and part of PS5? He's the last good CEO. I have no clue what you're talking about. He had a ton to offer to PS and the industry.

Elda181d ago

Pot calling the kettle black? One should really think before one speaks.

Tody_ZA181d ago (Edited 181d ago )

Delusional, blind fanboys like yourself will always use the false equivalence of trying to compare acquiring studios to acquiring publishers. But I'll exercise my own delusion in trying to get you to understand the following basic concept:

Sony acquires Insomniac and invests in them, Insomniac grows into one of the best developers in the industry right now with cutting edge tech, Sony's biggest IP in Spider-Man and more developers, more jobs, more games. Net win. Insomniac has a long history of developing PlayStation games and their partnerships with EA (Fuse) and Microsoft (Sunset Overdrive) were not remotely as successful as their PlayStation games.

Microsoft acquires Bethesda, an entire publisher, and so far all there is to show for it is less games on PlayStation. Microsoft then acquires Activision. Net result is major franchises leaving PlayStation and I'm willing to bet that not one single franchise will grow or studio will evolve, and instead these games will follow most of Microsoft's other IPs and diminish in quality and audience.

Let's see how it goes then. But the least you can do is activate some of your brain cells.

Also, if you read the quote he says he's concerned about smaller studios being absorbed into larger enterprises making a bigger game, thus losing the smaller studio. Insomniac has become bigger than ever, they didn't disappear into some subsect of another major Sony developer. His concern is about creativity lost.

Godmars290181d ago

Insomniac's rep became stronger under Playstation, versus what typically happens after MS buys someone.

MrDead181d ago

Leave him be guys, he told me Bethesda releasing a broken game and MS paying for selective positive reviews to make the game sound competent was somehow "poetic justice" to people like me expecting a working and fun game.

"narcissist, arrogant and a hypocrite"... Obsure, is this a cry for help?

KwietStorm_BLM181d ago

Insomniac has basically been a PlayStation studio for the entirety of their existence. Why would you use that as an example. The nonsense you say on literally every post has to be on purpose. There's no way all that irony is accidental.

A lot of people do care actually. They don't want to see the industry they love be destroyed by corporate greed

monkey602180d ago

I think I'm starting to go beyond caring. Watching Playstation and Xbox now are like watching the snake eat its own tail.
I cant help but feel like the old blood gamers like us are history and being left behind.

I think my days of buying dozens of games a year are over now. Let the big guys Shovel their games as a service shit and I'll enjoy the couple of good games released by studios that still have a passion.

FinalFantasyFanatic180d ago

@monkey602,

It's okay, there's still indies and some smaller games that are pretty damn good, there's that if anything.

neutralgamer1992181d ago

Obscure

You have to know the history behind it. Sony tried for decade plus trying to acquire them and always being told no. Insomniac left Sony to go try EA and MS before coming back

That’s one studio at 256 million

MS bought many studios and no one complained because many of those studios could use better support and resources. As gamers MS got the heat for buying publishers when Phil himself said he was against keeping games away from others so please don’t compare Shawn buying insomniac who had a long relationship with Sony to MS buying activision and zenimax. Maybe you are forgetting that before buying zenimax MS bought 10 plus studios and didn’t get much backlash

Obscure_Observer180d ago (Edited 180d ago )

@neutralgamer1992

"You have to know the history behind it. Sony tried for decade plus trying to acquire them and always being told no. Insomniac left Sony to go try EA and MS before coming back"

Thank you for the recap, but I´m very familiar with Insomniac´s history with Sony.

I don´t think you got my point at all.

In no moment in the original story, Layden talks about big publishers acquiring big publishers.

He is now positing himself against big publishers acquisitions of smaller/independent studios, when it´s a well known fact that a few years ago he was congratulating and self-promoting himself, for doing the exact same thing.

It was fine and dandy since he were the one doing, right? Dude´s a hypocrite! Period!

Now, correct me if I wrong.

Didn´t Sony acquired TEN new freaking studios in the last 3 years or so?

Is Layden posting himself against Sony?
