Throwdown Ep. 59 – Xbox One or PlayStation 4: Which is Actually “For the Players”?

Tony Polanco from The Koalition writes:

"Earlier this week, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg claimed that if people want a system to play games on then the only choice is the Xbox One. Also this week, our good friend Torrence Davis put up a Twitter poll asking his followers which system offered the most value between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Both of these events inspired the main topic of this week. Which box is the best box? We break down each systems pros and cons and determine which one is in fact 'for the gamers.'

Other topics we discuss this week:
*Halo 5 releases a ton of stats… except sales numbers.
*Konami says next Metal Gear Solid game will require a “large-scale investment.”
*SNK is done with Pachinko machines and is re-focusing on Video Games
*Activision buys Candy Crush developer, King."

I'd say based on updates/features like a new UI, backwards compatibility, etc that Microsoft is showing they're for the players right now

Profexxion3152d ago

Whatever the individual player desires more, seek it out. Or get all the consoles.

Majin-vegeta3152d ago

*Snk done with Pachi machines.

Yes than god.Hopefully we can now get a proper Fatal Fury game...and not this crap

Kyosuke_Sanada3151d ago

I agree. SNK has tons of heavy hitters in their arsenal that given proper care, they can yield awesome results. One need to look no further than King Of Fighters XIII.

carlosstyles3152d ago

Obviously Microsoft, i sold my ps4 after the last E3.

WeAreLegion3152d ago

The E3 where they showed The Last Guardian again, announced a full Final Fantasy VII remake, and gave us a live demo of Horizon: Zero Dawn, possibly the coolest new IP of the generation?

Are you absolutely sure you had a PS4?

muzikjunkie803152d ago

WeAreLegion

people like you need to realize not everyone is into final fantasy and other rpgs i for one passed up on bloodborne, good looking game but just not my type of game.

horizon looked pretty good but to say its the coolest ip of the generation is pretty far fetched as this generation is only 2 years old and there are lots of games to be announced in the next few years to come, the xbox one has some pretty cool looking games coming in 2016 also but i suppose to ps4 only owners they donr like admitting a rival console can also have cool new ips nothing new on n4g i suppose.

and what do you care if he had a ps4? if he sold it then thats his choice, who are you to question his decision?

as to the headline one simple answer if it plays games regardless of what name is in the box all cosoles are for the players. i own both ps4 and xbox one and both are fantastic machines in their respect. lets put this shite to bed and game on folks

WeAreLegion3151d ago

You think I only own a PS4? I have every system out there and build PC's. I just don't believe this guy.

I think every gamer should have a PS4, XBO, Wii U, and PC right now. There are too many great games on each not to.

What people like you need to understand is we can defend systems without hating other systems. I love this entire industry.

Insomnia_843152d ago

It's a shame we share the same name.

Trekster_Gamer3152d ago

XB1 has much more games, but if you want to see a few extra blades of grass and do not seek the better variety, and larger selection of AAA games then PS4 is for you.

WeAreLegion3152d ago (Edited 3152d ago )

Actually, the PS4 has at least 80 more games than the XBO.

As far as announced games go, it's not even close. We're talking HUNDREDS more.

PS4:
Exclusive = 90
Sony exclusive = 97
Console exclusive = 167
Multiplatform = 438
Total = 812

XBO:
Exclusive = 40
Microsoft exclusive = 9
Console exclusive or timed = 76/27
Multiplatform/TBA = 342/2
Total = 495

This is data off Wikipedia, by the way. If you have a better source, feel free to use it.

NewAgeisHere3152d ago

Don't bother explaining it to him, he's obvioulsy the type that won't let facts get in the way of his delusion. XB1 has more games?April 1st was couple months back:)

PreAtaric3152d ago (Edited 3152d ago )

That has to be a joke...

TripleCs3152d ago (Edited 3152d ago )

Idk why you're lying about the Xbox One having a larger catalog of games than the PS4 but if you really thought the Xbox One is as great as you claim it is then you wouldn't lie about it.

Microsoft's Xbox gaming handheld will fail unless someone else makes it

Despite Microsoft's experience in hardware manufacturing, I don't trust it not to fumble its first gaming handheld device which may eventually lead to a successor not getting released.

Unless it has some fature that really makes it standout I don't think someone who wants a handheld will pick it when the Switch 2 is just around the corner and the Steam Deck offers a huge library with much better prices worldwide

OtterX3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Especially since the existing PC handhelds (Steam Deck, ROG Ally, etc) can already run Gamepass. I don't have a Steam Deck yet, but I did see Forza Horizon 5 already running pretty well on it natively, so I'd imagine most XBox exclusives on Steam would run pretty well too. The most Microsoft could do is try to brute force a more expensive, higher power handheld. I doubt it would do well if that were the case.

ABizzel12d ago

This has been my point. It’s too little too late, and there are too many options out now that can already do the same thing with similar or better tech, in a similar price-range. A best case scenario for them is slightly above Steam-Deck performance at $100 less, but that’s not a huge selling point for anyone who has already jumped into the handheld PC market, and people still on the fence. Or go the other route of as cheap as possible but making it a streaming only device around $199.

It would do well and reach over 1m sold just because of the Xbox branding, but their consoles are already selling less and less (by the looks of it), so I don’t see a handheld being this great savior for them.

They simply need to rebrand one of the Surface tablets into the device with dedicated controls and more gaming focused, and call it a day instead of heavily investing in a handheld

VariantAEC2d ago

I'm guessing Xbox Wireless will be a streaming system like PS Portal. And yes I fully expect their portable Xbox to be given a really stupid name like "Wireless." Maybe even a dumber name like the Xbox Series W.

Jingsing3d ago

Doesn't make much sense to have a handheld that is locked down to the Xbox ecosystem when the PC handheld can run everything. I'm sure the same people that bought the Xbox fridge will give Microsoft their free money though.

XBManiac2d ago

Microsoft handheld Qualcomm based... you will see it next year... and you will see it sink.

This is a shame. I've been using it since the start. It had a few problems and issues but overall I did end up saving a little bit over 60 dollars using this program. There was probably not enough people using it.

Cacabunga3d ago

Is it playstation stars?? I really never understood it. I am still level 1

PS_HCT3d ago

This is not playstation stars. Sony Rewards is a US rewards program linked to a visa credit card.

darthv723d ago

I just checked... I have 144 points at the moment. Not even enough to get a $5 PS card. I can get a $1 digital gift card to Target or home Depot though.

blackblades3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I thought they were been done with this, I redeem some good stuff with this in the past. Wonder how much i got its been awhile

OtterX3d ago

I've gotten so many free games throughout the years w this program, this sucks. I've been with it since the beginning.

I just run a majority of my needed purchases through it and pay it off immediately instead of using cash or debit. The most recent was on Tuesday I got a $10 dlc free. It was great as long you're not borrowing out large amounts of money that you don't have.

ChasterMies3d ago

Realistically, those weren’t free games. You could have used another cards rewards points or bought Sony products on sale and then used the savings to buy PlayStation games.

OtterX3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Well there was a large boost on any purchase made on PSN, so there was an incentive to use over other cards' rewards. It used to be better, then they lowered it. I forget the exact multiplier though.

I pretty much got this $10 DLC free this week just by resubbing my PS+ Premium. (On sale during Days of Play) Not a lot of other cards would give that much back

dumahim3d ago

Right. I can do the same thing with my credit card rewards, but I have much more flexibility in what I can redeem those points for, including buying PS games.

shadowT3d ago

I never owned the credit card. Was this program available in Europe and Asia?

Profchaos3d ago

Seriously it was awesome Ive gotten a few free psn vouchers out of it.

FPSRUSSIA3d ago

i remember getting Assassin creed black flag for free with Redeeming my Points for 10 dollars when it was on sale this is very sad news.

OtterX3d ago

I actually believe that was one of my first cashouts on the program! haha

I remember I had just gotten the PS4 and I used it on Black Flag or Battlefield 4 to go with it.
I'm pretty sure I remember it being Black Flag though! (Great choice, as it became my favorite AC of all time)

Yep Xbox absolutely knocked it out of the park with that stunning show, it was everything a gaming showcase should be, games games and games, well done team Xbox.

CrimsonWing6912d ago

It really did. Like I came out of that with the hype for new games I haven’t felt since… well the better years of E3.

monkey60212d ago

It was without a doubt one of the better showcases in years. There was plenty there that excited me. Something has been lacking in years on all platforms

EasilyTheBest12d ago

It was an amazing showcase I loved everything about it. Can't wait to play some of those games.

Show was so good, it made me forget about that blue dragon rumor until the next day. Too many games to process.
